7:00 am
good morni good morning, america. breaking overnight, terrifying moments on the tarmac. vp nominee mike pence's plan runway after landing in a storm. the airport shutting down. emergency crews on the scene. >> it was pretty close to grave, grave danger but i just smoke to mike pence and he's fine. >> the safety measure that prevented disaster. governor pence joins us this morning. breaking right now, our brand-new poll shows a four-point race as hillary calls on her most powerful weapon joining michelle obama on the trail for the first time.
7:01 am
and, yes, she happens to be a woman. the first lady dancing with the nominee with just 11 days to go. the family of chandra levy speaking out after that bombshell interview with former congressman gary condit breaking his silence about the intern's murder and the accusations that cost him his career. the question he refuses to answer. >> dr. phil, i haven't, you know, answered that question publicly for 15 and i'm not going to change my position. >> now her mother is responding this morning. ? the ultimate party crashers. the bachelor blow-out weekend that took a surprising turn when an abandoned dog smelled bacon. >> the next thing you know we look over and there's a dog sitting at our front door. >> the surprising discovery that led to this. ? i was dead in the water nobody wanted me ?
7:02 am
good morning, america. happy friday. well, that is a different kind of bachelor party. >> you can say that. >> yeah, go and celebrate your friend getting married and you basically come home married. that's awesome of the that's great and we had a great moment and kicked off our giant dog adopt-a-thon thursday and check out how this dog reacted while it was watching our broadcast. i think it's saying take that one home. yes. >> we get so many people that tweet us pictures of their d >> i had some trouble at home. my dogs smelled all those other dogs all over me and they were not happy about it. >> much more on that ahead. first, the breaking news overnight. looking live at vp candidate mike pence's plane on the ground at laguardia airport in new york after that scary landing. we're going to hear from him. he'll talk to george. first abc's david kerley has the latest there at the laguardia for us this morning. good morning, david.
7:03 am
right behind me and crews were working until just a few minutes ago cleaning up where this jet ended this very dangerous incident. overnight -- >> we have an emergency in the airport. >> reporter: -- the boeing 737 campaign plane of mike pence skidded right off the end of the rainy runway at new york city's laguardia airport. >> tower, the aircraft is off the runway on the right side of the arrestor bed. >> reporter: emergency crews, rescue teams seeing that the jet had hit the safety barrier tore through it and ended up on the grass next to a roadway. >> i heard a noise. i didn't know what it was, i looked up and i saw this trump/pence plane making a noise and stopped right here. >> reporter: none of the reporters, staff or candidate were hurt and exited out the back of a jet. donald trump telling supporters about pence's plane dent. >> the plane skidded off the
7:04 am
grave, grave danger but i just spoke to mike pence and he's fine. >> reporter: governor pence giving reporters the thumbs up as he entered his hotel after the accident. our campaign reporter, eye niece de la cue tara, was on the plane and says the touchdown was not smooth. >> we felt a big bump and felt the plane skin off the runway. you could tell something was wrong although it was raining so we couldn't see anything and the us if everybody was okay. and that's when we realized something was wrong because he told us there was mud on his windows. >> it was 7:40 p.m. with wind and rain when the aircraft approached the runway. as it neared the end of it, it ran into the emergency material called an arrestor bed. >> it's designed to slow the airplane down quickly if the airplane were going off the runway. basically lightweight crushable concrete preinventoried what could have been a disaster.
7:05 am
laguardia airport's runways shut down for nearly two hours. >> we've got one runway that is open, planes are landing and departing. we're going to be working with the ntsb and with the private contractor to come up with a plan to remove the aircraft. >> reporter: so as you see, the aircraft has been removed and we saw these crews working to clean up all that concrete that this jet ripped through. the ntsb is on the scene, robin. they will be investigating today, what happened during that landing that ended up right here at the end of the runway. >> want to get some answers. you mentioned about the concrete ripped up behind you, the arrestor bed. many have never heard about that before useds a special material. how does it work exactly? >> reporter: so, as steve ganyard mentioned it's a lightweight concrete that they can get air into. it's hard but soft so when something really heavy hits it with energy, it kind of gives
7:06 am
the jet from run nothing that fence that you see right behind me and into this roadway. >> it did its job last night. thank you. george. i am here with governor pence. thanks for joining us. you look okay this morning. >> yeah, we're great. >> pretty scary few seconds inside the plane. take us inside. >> well, it was a low ceiling and we came in and it was a landing at laguardia and we just immediately felt heavy braking on the fishtailed a little bit and just for a few seconds you could feel us bouncing off and with mud splattered up on the windows we figured we were off the runway but thank god everybody was fine. >> the collapsing runway worked the way it was supposed to work in that's what i was told. i'm just grateful. really grateful for some quick action not only by the pilots but also by first responders who were literally seemed like they were on the scene at laguardia
7:07 am
a halt and, you know, my son is a marine corps aviator and michael always tells us every landing you walk away from is a good one. >> no question about that. thank goodness for that back on the trail today and four-point spread right now but the latest dollar numbers show a huge deficit for you and your campaign. the clinton campaign has about $62 million on hand. the trump campaign only about 16 million. is it time for mr. trump to write that check and close the gap? >> well, he'll make that deci the strength of this campaign is not dollars and cents, it's really the american people who i think are rallying behind donald trump's message to make america great again. i see it at rallies as i campaign for donald trump. you see those enormous crowds coming out and hearing him but i think it's the message. i think it's the agenda and the fact that in donald trump the american people have seen and sensed a leader who literally
7:08 am
country. >> part of the message is getting through about a rigged election. there is a poll in "usa today" that shows more than two-thirds of your supporters think the results can be manipulated. do you believe that. >> what i believe is obviously, george, you've been at this a loan time, there certainly have been instances throughout our lifetime and history of voter fraud. >> not that could change a national election. >> i don't anticipate that that's the case but it's a good time for people whether you're republic o independent, to find a respectful way to participate in the election process, to vote and also to be a part of the polling. frankly, what a lot of people are talking about on the campaign trail is the news from the administration that we'll see an average of 25% increase in the premiums for obamacare. i think that's been startling and jarring to the american people. they know we can do better. they know we can do better than hillary clinton's plan to introduce more single payer and more government solutions,
7:09 am
obamacare and we'll bring free market solutions more consumer choice and drive down the cost of health insurance without growing the size of government, that's what the american people want to see happen. >> you mentioned the release of e-mails by wikileaks. the u.s. government determined that russia is all but behind it. donald trump refuses to accept that. do you accept their conclusions? >> i think there's certainly strong evidence to that effect. >> that russia is behind split well, the recent megahacking came from a nongovernment source. i should we have the privilege of serving, we'll follow the facts on that and certain there's going to be very strong consequences if any state actor -- >> you don't accept the conclusion that russia is behind it. >> well, i think there's significant intelligence to support that, but we want to follow the facts on that, but i think beyond that issue is what's in the e-mails which is not -- has been uncon tree vered and see this particularly in the last several days, this large --
7:10 am
contributors to the clinton foundation that were also then encouraged to hire bill clinton to provide him with personal income all while many of those name interests were lobbying the state department. i the kind of pay to play politics the american people are tired of and it's the kind of pay to play politics that will end the day donald trump becomes president. >> how do you turn this around. >> i don't think there's any turning around. i think we're coming out of the fourth turn wheel to wheel, hammer down and the checkered flag and i got to tell you the enthusiasm we feel out there, the american people want change. the other side basically says if you like your status quo you can keep it. donald trump offers real change for a stronger america at home and abroad and i couldn't be more honored to be standing shoulder to shoulder with him. >> governor pence, we're glad you're okay. thanks for coming in. robin. >> all right. george, thank you. as you just saw we have a new abc news tracking poll, the race staying close as first lady michelle obama joins hillary clinton on the trail for the
7:11 am
shared experience as first ladies and their vision for america. abc's cecilia vega has more from west chester, new york. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. there's something else michelle obama and hillary clinton bonded over, donald trump and with this close race, hillary clinton is now on a tour of battleground states in this final push. you can see her plane ready to go right here behind me, next stop, iowa. on stage together for the first time this rivals turned friends. >> among the many real privileges i've this is to see the president and the first lady dance. [ cheers and applause ] ah. wow. one could only hope. >> reporter: hillary clinton and michelle obama before a packed
7:12 am
more inspiring than michelle a? obama? >> reporter: one of clinton's largest rallies of this entire campaign. >> as our first african-american first lady she's faced pressures i never did. and she's handled them with pure grace. >> reporter: but on this stop -- >> michelle obama. >> reporter: -- clinton was the opening act. >> yeah, hillary doesn't play. she has more experience and exposure to the presidency than any candidate in our lifetime. yes, more than barack, more than bill. bill. so, she is absolutely ready to be commander in chief on day one, and, yes, she happens to be a woman.
7:13 am
just how confident the clinton campaign is feeling, politico is reporting this morning that vice president joe biden is on a short list of possible secretary of state picks if she is elected, george. they are looking well past election day right now. >> but we still have several days to go. cecilia, thanks very much. we turn to that wisconsin college student under arrest this morning facing multiple sexual assault charges and new accusations as police reveal details from his notebooks. abc's linsey davis is here with the story. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning. one by one more women are coming forward. several say cook raped them but cook's attorneys are calling this a modern day character assassination. this morning, the university of wisconsin is caught in a sex scandal firestorm as one of its students faces a string of sexual assault charges. >> i've seen him around campus a lot. i just hope that he gets brought to justice. >> reporter: now suspended from campus, 20-year-old alec cook
7:14 am
her for more than two hours at his mad an apartment earlier this month. those charges have opened the floodgates to new claims by four other women who also accuse cook of sexually assaulting them. now dozens of women are coming forward to police about their alleged encounters with the real estate and urban land economics major. >> it's scary. he lived a few floors from me. >> reporter: investigators say they discovered a black leather notebook inside a nightstand drawer in his apartmen of the women he allegedly met and what he wanted to do to them. in this photo we see a check list including what makes her special, color of eyes and even this box labeled killed? but cook's attorneys are firing back insisting any encounters were consensual and say the nature of cook's journal entries was plain innocent. >> there's no woman name. there was no description of violent fantasy. nothing of that nature. >> reporter: cook is now behind bars.
7:15 am
has yet to enter a plea. his next court date is set for november. george. >> okay, linsey, thanks. to amy with today's other top stories starting out with this protest that turned violent overnight. >> more than 140 people have been arrested after police in riot gear clashed with protesters at the site of afternoon oil pipeline in north dakota. police say the crowd was blocking roads, lighting fires and even throwing homemade explosives at the officers. the protesters say the pipeline under constru drinking water and disturb native american burial sites. a jury acquitted ammon bundy and six others. bundy claimed it was a act of civil disobedience to protest the government's management of public land. the bundys still face charges for a standoff in 2014. in san diego the coast guard has offloaded 39,000 pounds of cocaine seized from drug
7:16 am
coast guard officers have confiscated nearly $6 billion of the drug this year and that is a record. and a big surprise for a woman from oregon. first her car was stolen then returned with an apology note and some cash. erin posted this on line hoping to find the thief. the woman who turned around was picking up her friend's red subaru in the same neighborhood and took the wrong red subaru. police tell our abc station in interchangeable keys. the woman returned her car with that note, $30 in gas money, but i love the first line of her apology note. hello, so sorry i stole your >> car. >> interchangeable keys. >> yes, that's probably the biggest concern there. i mean the fact that that could happen. at least she had a good responsible neighbor who made the switch back. >> i'm thinking about $30 in gas

>> generous. >> we don't know how far she went but both of these teams have gone a long way and if you haven't heard, the world series is back in chicago, everybody. the cubs are gearing up for the first championship game there in 71 years. the fans are fired up. the energy is crazy. in cleveland with the indians is abc's alex perez. oh, he's in chicago. alex, what is the energy like out there in chicago? >> yeah, that's right, michael. good morning to you. yes, we are in chicago and you can lital here at wrigley field and across the city. the cubs have now playt played world series since 1945 and you can imagine the anticipation here. if you look around, the stands are empty right now but you can feel that energy from the fans sort of everywhere you look around here right now. now, one of the things that they're going to be looking at here is just the prices of the tickets here, they are talking about super bowl prices for the
7:18 am
for a ticket. that's one of the reasons why a lot of people are watching the game at home. the series is shattering ratings records. to give you an idea some of the bars here around wrigley field are charging anywhere from $200 to $300 a person tonight just to walk in. the other big story here at wrigley, the cubs comeback kid kyle schwarber was not medically cleared to play on the field but we could possibly see him as guy, back over to you. >> 200 to 300 to go to the bar? >> is it an open bar? >> i bet not. >> i, man, all right, thank you, alex. ginger, in the northeast we're feeling the cold weather. snow in some places. >> 2 inches in hartford county and massachusetts, more than 6 inches fell. now it's going to be windy and cold at least for one day behind it but some big-time warming

7:32 am
his sit-down with dr. phil. condit has co-authored a new book out promoting it dedicated to chandra levy. former congressman gary condit has always insisted he had nothing to do with the death of chandra levy. the 24-year-old washington intern whose body ultimately turned up in d.c.'s rock creek park. >> why is it you will not answer publicly whether or not you had a sexual relationship with chandra levy? >> dr. phil, i haven't, you publicly for 15 years and i'm not going to change my position or my view on that today or probably any time in the future. >> reporter: condit's interview with dr. phil marks the first time he's spoken publicly since he was hounded out of office under a cloud of suspicion. condit makes it sound like levy was just another constituent but even now under dr. phil's gentle questioning, he can't seem to get his story straight.
7:33 am
>> you say in the book she had come by a handful of types. >> yeah, i mean i said handful of times. could have been four times. could have been five. >> he has not been forthright. oh, she came to our condo once. oh, maybe two, maybe three times. >> reporter: condit leaves it to his co-author sitting behind him to speculate. the two of them just published a book about the case. >> do you think people will conclude from that that he had a sexual rat >> reporter: why would a powerful california congressman give a young constituent jewelry? >> in my desk i kept gifts. we'd pick up cuff links, lapel pins and my wife had picked up some bracelets, you know, for people's birthdays. kids would come in and say pick one and chapdz dra came in with a gift for me which was chocks and i opened my drawer and reached in and we have one for you. >> reporter: for levy's mother,
7:34 am
>> internally i have a lot of pain and i still will always have questions. >> reporter: condit has waited 15 years to speak. dr. phil didn't exactly grill him. condit wrote a book about this and he lived through it. this was his best opportunity to tell his side of the story and yet this interview leaves you with a whole lot of questions. >> it certainly does, david, thank you. now to a church under fire for its so-called merial cure. they claim to have the holy are calling poison of our chief investigative correspondent brian ross tracked down and confronted the church's supposed arch bishop. >> magic potions are the stuff of fiction and fairy tales but also found in an abc news investigation the claim from the leaders of a thriving online church who offer a cure for desperate people for virtually every disease including autism,
7:35 am
church of health and healing. overseen in the u.s. by a man who says he's an archbishop.t' claiming what's in this glass is a miracle cure for the most serious of diseases. >> it's like watching a really good magician show. >> reporter: on this day as abc news watched, the archbishop's cathedral was a hotel conference room in southern california. his vestments, a black leather jacket and a bejeweled congregation that was charged $450 a head to be there seems to have come right out of the book of shams. >> i got people curing some major stuff just from that. from prostate cancer to brain cancer to autism. >> reporter: to find out what's in the miracle cure we ordered a shipment. $150 for these small bottles and took them to our respected testing laboratory. nothing miraculous about it.
7:36 am
>> mms is an industrial chemical. it's an industrial bleach. >> reporter: in fact, look what happened when we poured some of it undie lawsuited on to a pair of jeans, the denim turned white. even at the prescribed much smaller dose experts say it's a danger for anyone to drink. >> the fact that anybody would suggest you should give this to somebody is ridiculous. scary, dangerous stuff. >> reporter: but to the outrage of medical professionals, the church using is aggressively pushing the miracle cure shipping millions of bottles to people all over the world including people suffering from breast cancer. >> i think that kind of advice is terrifying. >> reporter: and to the parents of autistic children. >> you were doing it at the expense of these defenseless children. how can you not call that evil? >> reporter: were brennan, brian ross from abc news. can we talk to you for a second? when the time came to ask the archbishop about his preachings

sacraments we use. >> reporter: it quickly turned ugly. are you harming people do you think? >> no. >> you're not. not at all. >> you're an arc, okay. >> i'm a reporter. >> you're a piece of [ bleep ]. i say in spanish? >> just leave. >> reporter: the language from an archbishop. federal prosecutors sent one distributor of the miracle cure to prison and officials of the department of justice says hiding behind the cloak of their supposed church will not others in the church from being prosecuted if they sell this magic potion as a cure for serious diseases. >> taking advantage of people who are so vulnerable. >> preying on desperate people who are having trouble in their lives. >> thought apologetic. >> not in the least. >> you can see much more of brian's report on "20/20" at 10:00, 9:00 central on abc. thank you very much, brian. michael. >> all right, thank you, robin. coming up on our big board, so many celebrities are hitting

7:41 am
really get anything out of these big name endorsements? celebrities. >> sometimes it's positive and sometimes it's negative. we all remember the clint eastwood talking to the chair at the gop convention in 2012. nobody saw that as a positive. this is not going to persuade supreme to vote this a certain way but rallies people. much more of a rally effect going on for years. you remember or all read about jfk and the brat pack, frank senate from and calvin was for calvin coolidge so it's been going on a lot but it's a rally effect. >> thanks for clarifying i was not there, that i read about it. i was not -- thank you for clarifying that. >> i was helping. i was helping. >> that's what i was saying. and, matt, trump doesn't have a lot of big celebrity supporters, i guess, in his corner. and "saturday night live" had a little fun with that. let's take a look. >> i have got the cream of the crop.
7:42 am
i've got chachi and get this, i've even got the best baldwin brother, stephen baldwin. >> you know, every weekend "snl" seems to do something. do you think this phases him not to have a lot of celebrities in his corner. >> i think he sees himself obviously as a celebrity and he was a reality tv star now running for president in this. you know, it's funny also. the baldwin brothers, baldwin brothers that entered the dispute, he and billy baldwin are quiting back about what their father would think of this election. it's kind of funny. >> thank you, matt. up next the uproar over halloween costumes. tufts university warning students offensive or racist costume could get them in real trouble and, paula, that's what you're here to talk about. >> tufts, the greek community has sent out an e-mail to the chapters that says if you wear
7:43 am
offensive you are subject to disciplinary measures. i want to go over some offensive costumes deemed offensive. first and foremost, the kim kardashian robbery costume dubbed the parisian heist victim, this has been pulled by a lot of outlets. we have the scary clown costume which is out there. not necessarily insensitive but considering we have these rash of scary clowns around the country and buzzfeed, by the way, be careful when you google offensive halloween costumes, i want to say that. this one is coming >> yes, i'm warning you, the sexy ebola costume, inappropriate because we're talking about a deadly virus. this one, deluxe sexy goldfish costume. not sure how that's insensitive or inappropriate or offensive to anybody, but, michael, if you were thinking about going there, don't, goldfish will be offended. >> goldfish have feelings too. >> they do have a lot of feelings. >> this is the time, halloween, that people like to push the envelope a little bit. is this gaining any traction. >> you know what, we're seeing pushback around the country but
7:44 am
foundation launched a, quote, funeral for halloween campaign pushing back against political correctness and what they're saying around the country and their chapters they want to you create a cardboard cop and put all the halloween costumes in there and hand out obituaries. >> you need to be reminded not to have bad judgment. >> discuss because you can doesn't mean you should. we're so happy you're here and not at wrigley. i thought you'd be there clearing on the cubbies. played there tonight for the first time in 71 years. chicago obviously excited and espn's jessica mendoza, she is there. she's on the field for us and tell us about what -- that's hallowed ground but there's also something about the wind there, right, jess. >> oh, robin, it is the obviously the windy city here in chicago but what's so crazy about the wind is how inconsistent it can be and how
7:45 am
blowing in, this is the best pitcher's park in the game. when the wind is blowing out, this is the place to hit. you hit a pop fly it's leaving the park and for tonight it's supposed to be 17 to 19 miles per hour headed out of the park. >> whoa. >> so we're talking the biggest wind probably in the next 10 day, right. if you like a lot of phelps you'll see it tonight. even last season bryce harper here at wrigley hit a pop fly. he was like so drastically like all of a sudden that pop fly left the park for a home run so that is how much this will make a difference now that the wind is blowing out. >> if you're in the seats in the outfield. get ready. bring your glove. the indians will go with a three-man row take on the mound and corey kluber will start game four and possibly game seven on three days arizona rest. do you think he can pull that off? that's a tough thing. >> oh, michael, come on. you though that, right. it's the world series. i mean, corey kluber, we saw what he was able to do in game

this moment. i think any ace pitcher of a staff wants the ball and, yes, game one, game four, even possibly game seven but even if he's tired he's got a bull pen with this indians staff that has been ridiculous. however, i think the biggest story for tonight's game is that of starting pitcher josh tomblin. when you think about how critical this game is but his story, a lot of people don't know is his father jerry tomblin came down with an illness in august that paralyzed him from the chest down. he just got out josh had to leave in august, left the team to go visit his father. he hasn't seen him since. he will be at the game tonight and i think this is going to be a very emotional night for the starting pitcher for the indians. >> just got chills. >> just got chills. >> hey, have fun, jessica. >> we all will be watching that. >> thanks. >> we thank you, jessica, paula and matt. thank you. coming up in two minutes the bachelor party that turned into a big puppy rescue.

got to say that is cute. for millions of baby boomers there's a virus out there. a virus that's serious, like hiv, but it hasn't been talked about much. a virus that's been almost forgotten. it's hepatitis c. one in 30 boomers has hep c, yet most don't even know it. that's because hep c can hide in your body silently for years, even decades, without symptoms if left untreated, hep c can cause liver damage, even liver cancer. but there's important information for us: the cdc recommends all baby boomers get tested for hep c. all it takes is a simple one-time blood test. and if you have hep c, it can be cured. be sure to ask your doctor to get tested for hep c. for us it's time to get tested.
