right behind me and crews were working until just a few minutes ago cleaning up where this jet ended this very dangerous incident. overnight -- >> we have an emergency in the airport. >> reporter: -- the boeing 737 campaign plane of mike pence skidded right off the end of the rainy runway at new york city's laguardia airport. >> tower, the aircraft is off the runway on the right side of the arrestor bed. >> reporter: emergency crews, rescue teams seeing that the jet had hit the safety barrier tore through it and ended up on the grass next to a roadway. >> i heard a noise. i didn't know what it was, i looked up and i saw this trump/pence plane making a noise and stopped right here. >> reporter: none of the reporters, staff or candidate were hurt and exited out the back of a jet. donald trump telling supporters about pence's plane dent. >> the plane skidded off the

grave, grave danger but i just spoke to mike pence and he's fine. >> reporter: governor pence giving reporters the thumbs up as he entered his hotel after the accident. our campaign reporter, eye niece de la cue tara, was on the plane and says the touchdown was not smooth. >> we felt a big bump and felt the plane skin off the runway. you could tell something was wrong although it was raining so we couldn't see anything and the us if everybody was okay. and that's when we realized something was wrong because he told us there was mud on his windows. >> it was 7:40 p.m. with wind and rain when the aircraft approached the runway. as it neared the end of it, it ran into the emergency material called an arrestor bed. >> it's designed to slow the airplane down quickly if the airplane were going off the runway. basically lightweight crushable concrete preinventoried what could have been a disaster.

laguardia airport's runways shut down for nearly two hours. >> we've got one runway that is open, planes are landing and departing. we're going to be working with the ntsb and with the private contractor to come up with a plan to remove the aircraft. >> reporter: so as you see, the aircraft has been removed and we saw these crews working to clean up all that concrete that this jet ripped through. the ntsb is on the scene, robin. they will be investigating today, what happened during that landing that ended up right here at the end of the runway. >> want to get some answers. you mentioned about the concrete ripped up behind you, the arrestor bed. many have never heard about that before useds a special material. how does it work exactly? >> reporter: so, as steve ganyard mentioned it's a lightweight concrete that they can get air into. it's hard but soft so when something really heavy hits it with energy, it kind of gives

the jet from run nothing that fence that you see right behind me and into this roadway. >> it did its job last night. thank you. george. i am here with governor pence. thanks for joining us. you look okay this morning. >> yeah, we're great. >> pretty scary few seconds inside the plane. take us inside. >> well, it was a low ceiling and we came in and it was a landing at laguardia and we just immediately felt heavy braking on the fishtailed a little bit and just for a few seconds you could feel us bouncing off and with mud splattered up on the windows we figured we were off the runway but thank god everybody was fine. >> the collapsing runway worked the way it was supposed to work in that's what i was told. i'm just grateful. really grateful for some quick action not only by the pilots but also by first responders who were literally seemed like they were on the scene at laguardia

a halt and, you know, my son is a marine corps aviator and michael always tells us every landing you walk away from is a good one. >> no question about that. thank goodness for that back on the trail today and four-point spread right now but the latest dollar numbers show a huge deficit for you and your campaign. the clinton campaign has about $62 million on hand. the trump campaign only about 16 million. is it time for mr. trump to write that check and close the gap? >> well, he'll make that deci the strength of this campaign is not dollars and cents, it's really the american people who i think are rallying behind donald trump's message to make america great again. i see it at rallies as i campaign for donald trump. you see those enormous crowds coming out and hearing him but i think it's the message. i think it's the agenda and the fact that in donald trump the american people have seen and sensed a leader who literally

country. >> part of the message is getting through about a rigged election. there is a poll in "usa today" that shows more than two-thirds of your supporters think the results can be manipulated. do you believe that. >> what i believe is obviously, george, you've been at this a loan time, there certainly have been instances throughout our lifetime and history of voter fraud. >> not that could change a national election. >> i don't anticipate that that's the case but it's a good time for people whether you're republic o independent, to find a respectful way to participate in the election process, to vote and also to be a part of the polling. frankly, what a lot of people are talking about on the campaign trail is the news from the administration that we'll see an average of 25% increase in the premiums for obamacare. i think that's been startling and jarring to the american people. they know we can do better. they know we can do better than hillary clinton's plan to introduce more single payer and more government solutions,

obamacare and we'll bring free market solutions more consumer choice and drive down the cost of health insurance without growing the size of government, that's what the american people want to see happen. >> you mentioned the release of e-mails by wikileaks. the u.s. government determined that russia is all but behind it. donald trump refuses to accept that. do you accept their conclusions? >> i think there's certainly strong evidence to that effect. >> that russia is behind split well, the recent megahacking came from a nongovernment source. i should we have the privilege of serving, we'll follow the facts on that and certain there's going to be very strong consequences if any state actor -- >> you don't accept the conclusion that russia is behind it. >> well, i think there's significant intelligence to support that, but we want to follow the facts on that, but i think beyond that issue is what's in the e-mails which is not -- has been uncon tree vered and see this particularly in the last several days, this large --

just how confident the clinton campaign is feeling, politico is reporting this morning that vice president joe biden is on a short list of possible secretary of state picks if she is elected, george. they are looking well past election day right now. >> but we still have several days to go. cecilia, thanks very much. we turn to that wisconsin college student under arrest this morning facing multiple sexual assault charges and new accusations as police reveal details from his notebooks. abc's linsey davis is here with the story. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning. one by one more women are coming forward. several say cook raped them but cook's attorneys are calling this a modern day character assassination. this morning, the university of wisconsin is caught in a sex scandal firestorm as one of its students faces a string of sexual assault charges. >> i've seen him around campus a lot. i just hope that he gets brought to justice. >> reporter: now suspended from campus, 20-year-old alec cook

her for more than two hours at his mad an apartment earlier this month. those charges have opened the floodgates to new claims by four other women who also accuse cook of sexually assaulting them. now dozens of women are coming forward to police about their alleged encounters with the real estate and urban land economics major. >> it's scary. he lived a few floors from me. >> reporter: investigators say they discovered a black leather notebook inside a nightstand drawer in his apartmen of the women he allegedly met and what he wanted to do to them. in this photo we see a check list including what makes her special, color of eyes and even this box labeled killed? but cook's attorneys are firing back insisting any encounters were consensual and say the nature of cook's journal entries was plain innocent. >> there's no woman name. there was no description of violent fantasy. nothing of that nature. >> reporter: cook is now behind bars.

has yet to enter a plea. his next court date is set for november. george. >> okay, linsey, thanks. to amy with today's other top stories starting out with this protest that turned violent overnight. >> more than 140 people have been arrested after police in riot gear clashed with protesters at the site of afternoon oil pipeline in north dakota. police say the crowd was blocking roads, lighting fires and even throwing homemade explosives at the officers. the protesters say the pipeline under constru drinking water and disturb native american burial sites. a jury acquitted ammon bundy and six others. bundy claimed it was a act of civil disobedience to protest the government's management of public land. the bundys still face charges for a standoff in 2014. in san diego the coast guard has offloaded 39,000 pounds of cocaine seized from drug
