nearly four officers struck there something needs to be done i hope the right people are listening and let's make an effort and it should be dedicated in her honor ... following today's funeral there will be a procession to 29 california where she worked and was ultimately killed from their share will be laid to rest in alsip at the cemetery there ... chicago police are looking for the driver of a car who hit a woman on the west side ... leaving her in critical condition. the woman was hit at lake and pulaski just after nine o'clock last night. the car was last seen heading east on lake street. police have not released a description of the vehicle. the woman is being treated for head and leg injuries at mount sinai hospital.

but according to the group "equality matters", in 2010 the winshape foundation donated two million dollars to seven anti- gay groups like the marriage and family foundation and the athletes. police are still searching for the man who opened fire at a workplace in manteno yesterday. the shooting happened at a warehouse where the mars chocolate north america company rents space. the kankakee county sheriff's department got a call just before 2 o'clock alerting them of a shooting. police say a male employee shot another man multiple times in the chest. the shooter quickly fled the scene and the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. a package sent to the university of colorado... may help investigators discover a motive for the movie theater shootings. accused gunman james holmes was enrolled in the school's neuroscience program until he dropped out last month.

cbs news reports the package was addressed to a psychologist at the school... and contained a describing an upcoming attack. the f-b-i has not confirmed the contents of the package. we're also hearing what it was like for police and emergency workers who responded to the theater, right after the shootings happened. it took more than 20 minutes for some of the patients to even be put into ambulances. accused gunman james holmes is scheduled to appear in court again on monday. president obama is getting involved in the debate over gun control, following the movie theater shootings in colorado. >>i like most americans believe

that the second amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms. and recognize the tradition of gun ownership that passes between generations but i also believe lots of gun owners would agree that ak-47s belong in the hands of soldiers and not criminals ... president obama said that last night in front of the national urban league in new orleans. the president didn't offer any new proposals, but he did endorse background checks. republican presidental challenger mitt romney says america doesn't need any new gun laws. he says what's needed ... is a change in the hearts of the american people. romney says the colorado gunman should never of had any of the weapons he used in the massacre .... but police say holmes got them all legally. romney signed as assault weapons ban as governor of massachusetts ... calling them instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people. but romney says he supports the second amendment. the federal ban on assault rifles was lifted a decade ago.

in the wake of the colorado shootings... many people are call for tougher gun laws but chicago lawmakers are weakening a city gun ordinance. during a city council meeting yesterday... aldermen approved mayor emanuel's latest version of chicago's assault weapons ban. a previous version... which was struck down by a federal judge last month... denied a gun permit to anyone convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor. the "suntimes" reports the new version changes the provision for anyone convicted of a violent misdemeanor. they will now have to wait five years to apply for a gun permit. anyone with a felony conviction still faces a permanent ban. yesterday .. the mercury jumped to 100 for the fifth time this year ... and it felt even hotter for those still without electricity after tuesday's violent storms. by yesterday afternoon ... com- ed crews had restored 99 percent of the power outages ... but there were still several

you could feel the full impact of the drought of 2012 in grocery stores next year. the dry weather is killing corn, soybeans, and other crops. the drought has prompted agriculture secretary tom vilsack to call on congress to take action to provide assistance to farmers hurt by some farmers have already given up and plowed over their fields. money and government assistance to hold them over until next year. more than 1200 counties across the country have been designated disaster areas because of the drought. the state of illinois will polluted water supply next week. told people at a community meeting last night the state can't wait a month or more for the village to take action. so the state will install new water filtering equipment on the two primary wells in the south suburb to remove cancer-causing vinyl chloride. for now ... sauk village is handing out bottled water to residents who want it. a national consumer federation warns that federal crop subsidies are paying for junk

hospitals in at least eight states are trying to find out if patients may have come into contact with a lab technician accused of spreading hepatitis c. david kwiatkowski.. who has the diseases.. is accused of injecting himself with painkillers meant for patients, and then leaving the syringes to be used again. he was arrested and charged this month in exeter, new hampshire.. where 30 patients have been diagnosed with the same strain of hepatitis c as kwiatkowski. kwiatkowski also worked in arizona, georgia kansas, maryland, michigan, new york, and pennsylvania.

wer'e learning new details about the kidnapping of cal ripken, junior's mother. 74 year old violet ripken was found safe... but severely shaken up yesterday after a gunman forced her from her home in maryland. police say they drove around in mrs. ripken's car... and the gunman used her credit cards at several places. the ripken family was not contacted for a ransom... and it appears the gunman may not have know she was the mother of a famous baseball player. the whole ordeal lasted nearly 24-hours. michael jackson's mother returned safely to her home in california today. 82 year old katherine jackson left the home she shares with michael's three children on july 15th. she had no contact with the children while she was gone. that led to speculation she was being held somewhere against her will... amid a bitter family dispute over michael jackson's estate. a judge temporarily revoked her guardianship of the children yesterday. her attorneys say she was staying with relatives in arizona. the heaviest rainfall in 60 years in beijing china...

in medical watch.. new research questions the use of c-t scans to rule out heart attacks. journal of medicine" reports heart scans cut time spent in the hospital, but did not save money. the scans also prompted more tests and questionable treatments.. and gave relatively large doses of radiation to people at such low risk of a heart attack that they probably didn't need a major test at all. an accompanying commentary says there is no evidence that adding these tests saved lives or found more heart attacks. a panel of doctors researchers, and public health officials is calling for new guidelines to prevent more people from abusing powerful and addictive opioid painkillers. the group is asking the fda to

to revise prescription labels for medications such as vicodin and oxycontin. they want to prohibit use of the drugs for moderate pain.. add a maximum daily dose.. and only allow patients to take opioid painkillers for up to 90 days, unless they're being treated for cancer-related pain. changing the label would not limit how doctors prescribe painkillers.. but would stop drug companies from promoting them for non-approved uses. new york's jfk.. los angeles international.. and honolulu international airport rank highest on the list of the top illness. mit researchers looked at the nation's 40 largest airports to figure out which are most likely to spread a disease in the event of an outbreak in their cities. o'hare international airport ranks sixth on the list. and even though atlanta's hartsfield-jackson airport has the most flights, it ranks number eight. public health crises like the sars outbreak have shown how easy it is for diseases to travel.
