>> jadiann: we begin at noon with breaking news. a disciplinary hearing under way in boston for the driver of a run-away red line train. david vasquez is a 28-year veteran of the m.b.t.a. his train was carrying about 50 passengers when it took off from braintree last week without him. nicole oliverio is live from dorchester with the very latest this morning. nicole?

confirm that disciplinary hearing is under way. now, there was a fact-finding hearing yesterday. but vasquez didn't attend. according to his lawyer, vasquez has a note from his doctor saying this whole situation has caused too much stress for him. the union which represents m.b.t.a. workers holds its regularly scheduled meetings. union reps, though, wouldn't comment on the investigation against member david vasquez who was supposed to be behind the controls of last week's run-away red line train. but vasquez' lawyer told the "boston herald" that vasquez denies wrapping a cord around the throttle, causing the train to take off. "he ran as fast as he could to the braintree station to say "i have a run-away train. get that thing." he didn't even realize his leg was bleeding. train. no one else was hurt. thanks in big part to the "t" soup visor who told just one station how he and another worker came up with the plan to stop the red line train

the second largest school district in the nation. we have the very latest on this breaking news story. reporth more than 1,100 schools are closed in and around los angeles. that affects over 640,000 students. school officials say they received an e-mailed threat. the specific are still unclear. investigators describe it as an electronic message received around 7:00 this morning. the district superintendent says it was a bomb threat. he says the schools commonly get threats but called this one rare. officials say schools will remain closed until the threat is completely cleared. >> in an abundance of caution, the superintendent has indicated we have chosen to close our schools today until we can be absolutely sure that our campuses are safe. and until it is deemed safe by law enforcement and concurred with our district officials which we believe will be able

day, we will keep those schools closed. >> reporter: school officials say they expect the threat to be cleared by the end of the day today. the school superintendent says the december 2 attack in nearby san bernardino that left 14 people dead influenced the decision to close the schools today. meantime, officials in new york city say they received the same threat as schools in l.a. new york officials determined it was a hoax. >> sarah: the first full day of deliberations coming up in the philip chism murder trial. the jury must decide if the teenager was insane when they allegedly murdered his math teacher. victoria warren live outside superior court with the latest. >> reporter: yeah. the jury has been deliberating for a little more than six hours. we just heard from them for very first time since deliberations started. they had a question. they are apparently having technical difficulties viewing some of the surveillance vild owe. the judge proposing that they train one juror on how to use the computer. then they can move forward from that. the jury has a lot of information that they are

they are deciding if 16-year-old philip chism is guilty, not guilty, or not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility in the death of his danvers high school math teacher. when chism was 14 years old. the lack of criminal responsibility will be based on the defense's insanity claims that chism is schizophrenic and was hearing voices. the jury also has to decide on rape charges. the jury has 140 pieces of evidence, including this surveillance video to go through. since opening statements on november 16, they have heard from 53 witnesses, including psychiatric experts, from both the state and defense. colleen ritzer's family has been in the court every day. they have sat through all the testimony, including some very graphic details of how colleen died. the jury is made up of eight men and four women. the plan is for them to deliberate each day until 4:00 in the afternoonnal verdict is reached. and again, we have heard from

worcester and norwood, gusting to 37 miles per hour. a windy afternoon. winds gusting to 40 to occasionally 50 miles per hour. no arctic air with this wind. temps right now, upper 50's. it does turn cooler tomorrow. we will talk more about that coming up. >> sarah: people taking the kingston-ploucht commuter rail had to sit through more than two hours of delays. m.b.t.a. blames a mechanical problem on one of the trains. they sent another train to the area. it didn't get there until almost 1:00 this morning. one rider who was on the disabled train tweeted out this photo. take a look. you can see all the lights are off and the car is stopped. many commuters are frustrated with the m.b.t.a.'s continuing problems. >> ridiculous. like winter all over again. >> sarah: the "t" tweeted out a warning of the delay. it lasted about 80 minutes

time of year. tomorrow afternoon, temperatures are in the middle 40's. the forecast, another weather system on thursday. but again no, arctic air. it is rain-drops. not snowflakes. as we work into the weekend, saturday and sunday. mostly sunny skies. temperatures for the patriots game, their last home game, regular season, that is, in the lower 40's at kickoff sunday afternoon. >> sarah: a texas man rams his pick-up truck through the lobby of an oklahoma hotel. two workers jumpld out of the way in the knick of time. over a bill. but the clerk never expected this. shocking new video released monday shows the heart-stopping moments for two employees at an oklahoma hotel after a disgruntled guest crashed his truck into the front desk. it is driver identified by police as john ed war parsley. he is first seen talking with the police officer last thursday outside a comfort inn

about 110 miles northwest of oklahoma city. surveillance video then shows parsley crashing his sierra gmc through the hotel entrance and into the front desk. as two women frantically dive for safety. parsley backs up the truck, stops and then pulls back into the lobby. he says something to the women. gets out of the truck and calmly walks back to the entrance with his hands raised. the 62-year-old man was reportedly upset that his credit card had been declined twice. according to a local newspaper. he told police he grieve is the hotel because hotel staff thought he was bluffing and he proved he wasn't. no one was injured. but the lobby of the comfort inn and suites was severely damaged. parsley who is from gonzalez, texas was held on a $1 million bond monday night. on two felony charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. and one count of malicious

that as these third-party vendors are doing business with our school system, that the parents are informed. and they put pressure on them to provide the quality service. >> reporter: the boy was alone for 45 minutes. he was okay. his parents came to pick him up. the driver is facing a reckless endangerment charge. he is accused of not doing the required bus inspection before locking the bus up and he could also lose his job. >> we could suspend his license, imminent threat. because he didn't follow through what he needed to do. report t police chief says they have contacted the registry to take the steps to make that happen. the school bus driver will be summoned to court to face charges. in lawrence, victoria warren, 7 news. >> sarah: two people rushed to the hospital after an armed

police say they are searching for at least two suspects who were wearing masks at the time. it is still not clear if they stole anything from the home. but the victims say they had guns. a local mailman helps police catch two men trying to break into a house. this was in methuen. as susan train shows us, the family has a special message for their holiday hero who went above and beyond the call of duty. >> they were trying to break in with the hatchet over here. >> reporter: the frame of the sliding glass door sledded in some places. >> he thought he would bring the packages out back and hand them to us, instead of leaving them out front. by the time he went around there, he saw, like, one of them that had the ax in his hand. >> reporter: it was tuesday around noon. >> i started off going through my shed.

getting the hatchet. they started smashing away at the door. >> reporter: a veteran mail carrier confronted the teens. he took off after them. >> that was a pretty bold thing to do. to look out for us. >> reporter: neighbors heard the commotion and called police. officers working a detail nearby were quickly able to arrest the teens. and what could have been a very scary holiday for six-year-old brooke turned into a lesson about the mailman who saved christmas. >> it went from she could have been scared and like, not felt secure to being, like, oh, that's so cool and she felt safe. which is important. the most important thing. >> reporter: susan tran, 7 news. >> sarah: a girl who has been through quite a lot. a surprise trip to disney. you may remember safire, badly burned in a house fire that killed her father, sister and two brothers. all she asked for on her christmas list was for people to send her christmas cards. well, her request went viral.
