west of boston. we had 4 and a half inches of snow. many towns picking up close to 3 inches of snow, pepperell at 2.8. closer to the city of boston about an inch of snow. the snow totals weren't impressive but it was enough to create a mess out there in combination with all of the sleet. where you see the pink most of the commonwealth with the tension of cape and the islands that is where we have a freon advisory until midnight for a glaze of ice in place. there is low-level moisture in place so we still have areas of freezing fog and freezing drizzle that we'll contend with and it takes the little glaze to create slick spots. that in addition to the cole air moving back in allowing for temperatures to drop off and reflees a lot of the slush out there. snow continuing across maine tonight. down to 30 degrees in norwood.

the slush refreeze in the city of boston. a little bit of patchy drizzle on the sidewalks there creating slick spots. we've seen that north and west of down and back through the merrimack valley up to southern new hampshire. 41 degrees still in plymouth. even a huge difference from boston which downtown boston 30 was low pressure system but downtown is at 29. hull 41 degrees so you have this coastal front right across the islands and that is going to shift off to the south and east through the next couple of hours. reading 27 degrees. lowell down to 24. boxford at 26. we're in the lower to middle 20s through worcester. down to 33 foxboro. 35 attleboro. these numbers falling as well. the freezing mark in randolph so the freezing air coming through randolph capton sharon as we speak. so there will be icy spots that will continue this evening and overnight tonight. now a lot of the patchy freezing drizzle should end

be slick spots early tomorrow morning otherwise mostly cloudy to start off the morning. temperatures above freezing top afternoon. track a couple of evening showers and then it's quiet on the seven-day forecast ahead. >> reporter: the mix causing a bit of a highways. knick nib is on the -- nick emmons is in the traffic tracker, how is it looking? >> reporter: heading south everybody looks great but when you are going at increased speeds you want to be careful with the slick conditions. temperature right now in our car is 24 degrees is what we're getting outside. as you can see going the other way cars coming from out of boston heading north, a lot more traffic on that side of the highway. you are forced to go slower so that should help out as far as anybody sliding around or anything like that. you want to keep, give yourself distance between the car in front of you and obviously take things slowly out on the highways.

roads in andover where you can feel how slick the roads. iced over. we saw one accident in a residential area, car took if a little too fast around a turn. took out a utility pole. no injuries but just shows you how slick the roads are right now. after the rain had moved through and things dropped off as far as the temperatures are concerned. so we're going to keep an eye on things heading on 93 south. that is the latest blind the wheel of the traffic tracker, nick emmons. >> anchor: winter weather came storming in today plow drivers had a slow start to the seasoned and there was quite a bit to get down. general egan is live in andover. >> reporter: adam, there was some work to do today. they got 2-3 inches of heavy wet snow here in andover. when you are out in a storm you meet characters. even some people who like cleaning up after one.

getting into the city but so far tonight everything looking good. people getting ready to get home on time. the most important part. latest live from north station, tim caputo, 7 news. >> elizabeth: remember track the storm with our 7 weather app. >> adam: following breaking news at 5:00, boston police say one of the two men shot in mattapan this morning has died. tonight the search is on for whoever pulled the trigger there. >> elizabeth: jonathan hall is in mattapan with the latest on this investigation. do they have leads yet. >> reporter: police aren't sharing the stated u.s. of the investigation but no doubt they do have leads. they have a victim who is still alive. this happened in broad daylight before 9:00 am and there were' plenty of residents on this street. a short one-way street. a double shooting in mattapan leaves two teenagers wounded bleeding in the street. one later died at boston medical center.

then i wake up because i heard one of the guys screaming, he shot me. >> reporter: the women heard shots outside their building before 9:00 am. they saw e.m.t.'s arrive to help the victims. one hit in the abdomen. >> the paramedics were pressing on his stomach to make sure there is no more blood. he kept asking if he was going to die and it was very sad. >> reporter: another victim was hit in the lower body and is expected to survive in. >> he was able to lift off his hands. area. below the waist. >> reporter: boston police detectives gathered evidence and tried to find out if the young men had been tarted in shooting. >> our gang unit is here being looking into the background and obviously we retaliation. >> reporter: the commissioner says the shooter or shooters in this case may have been in a black acura seen speeding up

jonathan hall, 7 news. >> elizabeth: a judge denied a motion to dismiss a murder charge against one of aaron hernandez's alleged accomplice. karl oates ortiz argued there is not enough evidence to charge him with the murder of owed din lloyd but the judge didn't agree. ortiz is a co-defendant of hernandez. lloyd was killed in an industrial park in 2013. >> anchor: a chicago police officer facing a judge, officer jason van dyke walked in court to shouting and insults. he faces first-degree murder charges. he pleaded not guilty accused in the shooting death of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald. her is the video of that incident. the teen appears to be walking away from the officers when van dyke shoots him 16 times killing him. the officer faces six counts of first-degree murder. >> elizabeth: a wanted fugitive captured after appear intense three-week

the so-called after influenca teenager is busted across the border in mexico. he blamed his privileged upbrimminging for not receiving right from young. he received probation for killing four people in a drunk driving accident. ryan schulteis is here with what happens next. >> reporter: ethan couch and his mother are sitting in a jill in next counder a the two are causing more public outrage. ethan couch was taken into custody in mexico monday along with his mother. texas authorities confirmed tuesday they have leads the two fled their after ethan's apparent probag violation. >> we fouled the leads-- followed the leads and led to mexico where they were' taken into custody. >> reporter: his case gained worldwide attention after he killed four people during drunk driving.

one of the top ten pictures taken by the space station this year. it captured sandy shores off the cape. very clear there, isn't it and the port of provincetown. that is about, if you look near the center of that image. >> announcer: now 7c with meteorologist chris lambert. >> taking a look at our forecast. i wish it was beach weather down national sea shore. taking a look at the freezing rain advisory, we have that in play until midnight. what is happened is we've had a lot of cold air return from the north, and there is a little left overdrizzle there. snow to the north of us, that continues across maine. that is not going to come to the south of us, but the cold air s. 19 degrees in portland. we're down to 30 so below freezing in the city of boston and that freezing line continues to press south.

of us, once a wave of low pressure ran by to the south winds changed direction and the cold air otherwised back in and it pushed hard down into the southeastern eastern mass getting there over the last couple of hours so we have this refreezing black ice out there. a lot of the main roads that have been treated okay. the side streets, brimming, overpasses, -- bridge, overpasses, sidewalks and driveways for sure getting iced over. 43 plymouth. that 30 was at logan airport. but in downtown boston, 28 degrees. so likely seeing slick spots in the city right now. 31 winthrop. 29 melrose. out into worcester county and down even into portions of southeastern massachusetts now as we watch the numbers drop to 30 degrees in randolph, 31 foxboro and 29 in attleboro. bridgewater, locations down

expect to drop below freezing within the next hour or so. patchy freezing drizzle. refrees tonight temperature temperatures in boston upper even mid 20s then we'll hold steady in the low to mid 20s in a lot of the suburbs. tomorrow evening we could et catch a couple of showers as an expense of the storm system that worked outthrew there, is a front that extends down to the gulf of motor mexico. we'll watch rain shower clip tomorrow evening. i can't rule out a couple of scattered showers tomorrow evening. should be mainly rain out there. don't expect too much issues out of there. i don't expect issues new years eve. a little bit on the cool side. first-night festivities in the city of boston, lower to middle 30s at midnight not bad considering the time of year. we could be well into the deep-freeze in time of year. seasonably cool.
