now, on 7. the bruins facing off against a familiar foe and taking things outside. >> we're going to have more and there's going to be some fun here. >> mob freezing out the b's. >> the highs and lows after the winter classic. this is 7news at 4:00. >> a classic celebration in scott bro, the montreal canadiens stunning the boston bruins on their home ice. taking it outdoors, a that you
4:31 pm
a slow start for the breaking news. they weren't able to put it in the net as much as they needed. >> a disappointing loss for fans, but what an experience for everyone out at gillette today. we have team coverage from foxbourough starting with the sports director. >> what's the most better rival in all of hockey with the bruins and canadiens. the problem was outside here, i should say the problem was is just the canadiens came out with much more energy than the boston bruins. maybe they were the more desperate team having such an awful december and being in a funk and in danger of falling into third place. and it showed right from the start. >> let's show you how it went down at gillette stadium. bruins, canadiens, in a fantastic scene here at gillette stadium, and really a weird scene with the arch rivals walking in side by side. paying home age to bill belichick
4:32 pm
batting home the rebound path. take a 1-0 lead. montreal dominanting 14-3. more from montreal. brian anyone, the beautiful feed out of the air to buy ron. late in the period another montreal goal and it was a baseball theme again. who just bats it out of the air and scoring in return from injured reserve. it was 3-0 at half. seconds left in the period bruins with a great chance on the power play, but mike condon robs brian spooner. the native getting a chance to play for the injured carrie price. it's a memorable day at yet gillette stadium. adam mcqaid with the shod. boston able to give the 67,000
4:33 pm
he scores his 16th of the year putting up montana up 4-1. they go on to win it 5-1. this is bruins head coach, coal julian right now. >> how would you describe the conditions as far as the ice and everything and the boards and whatnot. >> i don't know, steve. i think you would have to ask the players that, because, again, i didn't really talk about that, because to me it has no impact on our game when you look at both teams playing on the same ice. i think that wasn't my concern more than it was just trying to get our team to try and get something going here, so you'll have to ask them. >> you're facing a pretty tough stretch coming up with the road trip. how do you want your team to put it one aside and reload? >> well, you don't have a choice. i always say the same thing. you don't have a choice.
4:34 pm
things aren't going to get any easier. right now i don't know if we anticipate having anybody back for the next game or not, so we have to move with what we have and when you have that line up, you just have to tell yourself you need to be better and we have to be better as a group, and we're challenged right now, but that's where team comes into play and you have to play for each probably probably a little bit harder and probably a little bit more determined. >> all right. we are back here at gillette stadium and we have kevin paul gentlemen. right from the start montreal as we expected was the more desperate team and it's hard to meet energy with a team like that. a team that had lost three of 15 in december. a team that had been playing
4:35 pm
brandon gal we are, they came out period. do you think it's more energy. right skill. the fact there's no marshon. those are two of your top fix forwards so you're not going to compete there. the first goal, minute, 14 into it. you could feel 60,000, maybe 10,000 for montreal felt good about it, but the energy dropped dramatically. >> i think brandon gallagher, he's their heart and soul. they were tops in the league as far as wins before he got hurt and then losing brad marshon for the bruins i think is tough on their -- no injury line without him. they do not have a lot of speed without him. >> and if marshon is in there he's going to make something happen. he's going to start throwing an elbow. but without him it just fell flat. >> on a day where montreal gets their version and i better and brandon gallagher back on the ice today.
4:36 pm
looked down that roster at these lines. a lot of minor leaguers. >> i think they had a tough time. they were looking for a wing and a prayer with erickson. they started the game griffith. you're playing in the winter classic and you're trying to find a wing man to play with your tough guys that's a sufficient situation. there's four or five guys in the lineup that are sent down during the season. that's a tough situation for the bruins. >> this is a bruins team, though, that has exceeded expectations, was here on january 1st playing for first place. they could have leap frogged their way into first place today, instead it is montreal who gets a good jump start for the second half. >> i agree wholeheartedly it's been a surprise. what's not going to be great on the power play when you're missing those kids of guys, it's going to feed off of emotion. much of what they've been able to sustain is they've been playing so
4:37 pm
if you look that first period where they only get three shots, well, they only took four, right, so they land three, and meanwhile i think canadiens actually squeezed off 27 shots. that was a big big disparity. >> let's take a look that mike condon put on today. graduated from princeton university with a degree in politics. takes off from school a little bit early and here he is playing at gillette stadium with the mask -- with the back of his helmet signed by bill belichick and tom brady. the kid played up to potential. >> he really had him bring it more in the third period than any other period. the first period they had three on net. he wasn't really tested. i think that's a great situation for a young guy to come into in the winter classic. boston did not put a lot of pressure on him. i think the line had a good cycle down in the first or second period. >> the thing about hockey is some
4:38 pm
first goal in his pocket, a minute, 15 into it. now he's ahead. he never really had from what i could see really heat on it or follow up shots. there was some photographic in front of the net but it was sort of that typical, today anyway, nhl congestion traffic. >> it wasn't a matter of shots being screened, tough shots. >> i thought he had a pretty easy day. >> great energy here at gillette stadium. special in the third period before he put an end to it. there was signs that even with this team as depleted as it is, it can >> they can. classic? snow always helps. we didn't have that. it wasn't a close game. so in the end you're right. you could feel that building that we're going to make start taking some numbers and stuff. we did finally see some of that emotion. i think that saved some of the day. >> you kind of wonder about the way the bruins started as well. they didn't have a full check. they played a trap style game. they sat back and thought they were going to play a transition game against montreal.
4:39 pm
zone. they never got their legs going and i think in the game like this where the ice is going to be poor you're going to have a tough time creating chances. i think you have to get after it offensively more. >> most of that first period was played in the bruins zone and most of game for that fact. and tuukka was really tested. he had some great saves today. i could see the frustration on his face. he took the puck off the neck and hung in until the end. i thought he did well. >> he got off to a bit of a rough start, but really for the last six, eight, more than that, six, eight weeks, i think he's been tremendous. the elite goal tender they thought he had. >> it should have been a higher score for montreal. he kept boston in it, but i think in the end it's a tough situation. you take that shot to the chin you have to hope he's going to be okay later on. >> of course they gave the crowd something with a few skrums on the ice.
4:40 pm
at least we have to give them that. as you go back, is it going to snow, be a tight game? give them that brand of hockey. i thought when i saw that, given that there's 10,000 canadiens fans in the stadium, thankfully there's nothing of that. >> i thought he would get involved earlier with some fist to cuffs. the bruins sat back to start the game, and a game like this i guess you're thinking about the standings, but you're outside, you're in a big stadium like this. i think you have to get the engine going right away and not shift back. >> we'll have much more coming up in just a few minutes. we send it back in studio right now. recording live from gillette stadium. >> thanks so much. a massachusetts native stealing the spotlight. they were talking about montreal foley mike condon shutting down the bruins. the rookie from needham proving to be just too much for the b's. >> it was all condon from the get-go. we're live with more on his stellar performance.
4:41 pm
experience for him. you know, he says he's been at gillette stadium many times before. he only grew up about 30 minutes before, but every time he's come to the stadium he's been in the stands as a spectator. today he took the uniform of the enemy and essentially shut down the bruins. 27 saves, one goal against the 25-year-old was absolutely stellar with family and friends watching on. massachusetts. he was undrafted after he got out of college, eventually signed by ago. in fact this opportunity for him almost didn't happen. he's essentially the backup goalie for montreal, but when carrey price got injured he stepped into the role and what a role it's been. he came to the stadium yesterday during practice with that helmet he where's, that goalie helmet with bill belichick on one side, the
4:42 pm
side and the four lombardi drives in between. even the patriots slogan, do your job underneath. clearly his ties to massachusetts are still strong. the great feat by him. he got the back of his helmet signed by bill belichick and tom brady. bill belichick writing best wishes. and tom brady writing, mike, go patriots, your pal, tom brady. obviously a big day for the 25-year-old who grew up, as i mentioned, just about 30 minutes from here. interestingly enough his father is a state police officer, a sergeant with the state police who actually works a lot of games here at gillette stadium. in fact, one of his duties yesterday afternoon was to help protect the canadiens team, actually escorting the bus to and from the hotel back here to the stadium which happened to include his own 25-year-old son. certainly a great day for that family. even if it does happen to come at the expense of our own boston bruins that's the latest live, from
4:43 pm
>> inside we're waiting for more news conferences. this will be players from both teams and we'll dip in and out of those live as we get them, but
4:44 pm
ok, we're here. here's dad. mom. the twins. aunt alice... alice was coming. of course. don't forget grandpa. can the test drive be over now? maybe just head back to the dealership? don't you want to meet my family? yep, totally. it's practically yours, but we still need your signature. the volkswagen sign then drive event. r zero due at signing, p p zero down, zero deposit, r and zero first r r months payment t on a new jetta p and othernselect models. announcer: 3 republican governors. but which governor won national praise for tough leadership handling

4:46 pm
>> all right. welcome back. you probably just watched the winter classic here on 7 nbc. a thrilling game. not so much for the b's, but the fan experience, of course outside right in the heart of patriots nation there at gillette stadium. >> we're going to head back out live to gillette where joe has more reaction. joe? >> well, this is a game where it was meaningful. you have a lot of winter classics where as soon as the puck drops it's not much more than some bad hockey on bad ice surface. >> let's take a look. we've got condon and gallagher going up there right. let's listen in. >> that's something if we tried 100 more times we might not be able to do it.
4:47 pm
that went our way today. pretty special with what he was able to do and i had the easy job. >> mike, being from massachusetts and playing in front of your family, can you say that it was the most magical game that you ever played? >> yeah, probably the most special. i had a lot of friends and family here tonight, and, yeah. bruins, gillette stadium, winter classic, new year's day, i don't think you could script it any better. >> a question for each. mike first since you have the mic. did you sense the moment when you made that glove save with a tenth of a second left in the second period? >> what do you mean it? >> what it could have meant to your team, like coming that stage, preserving a three-goal lead. >> yeah, 3-0, they get a goal at the end of the second. they have momentum. i'm not sure if the power play wouldn't have carried over, but,
4:48 pm
they just scored a goal, so i guess it made a big deal. and brendan, how did this return for you fit into i guess the way action, especially on this stage. >> i mean, the way that the night went, you couldn't really ask for anything more. effort. we all had so much fun. the smiles that everyone had coming to the rink starting yesterday at practice. everyone -- everyone chipped in. it was a great team effort for me coming back. i said i wouldn't come back if i wasn't able to contribute and i was happy to be a part of it tonight. >> mike, i know you talked about wanting to block out a lot of outside stuff before the game. were you able to soak in what you were able to just do? >> not until the game was over. i was just trying to keep my head on the ice the whole game. but when the final buzzer rang i took a couple minutes and looked around and tried to take as many mental photos as i could and
4:49 pm
it's a special one. >> mike, first off, can you share any of those mental photos with us right now, number one, and number two, is there anything that you saw before, during, are or after the game, is there anything that you saw like high school teach that jumped out at you during the game. >> mental photos. i haven't really -- haven't got to look at the camera roll yet right now. it's been crazy after the game here, so not much i really remember or stuff to think about. i try to keep my eyes out of the crowd. i'm sure there's plenty of people i can recognize in each section but i tried not to look too much. >> mike, here. you had some nice signatures on the back of your mask,. can you comment on the fact that it might have given you some good omen. >> i'm pretty sure everything that tom brady touches turns to gold. i was pretty happy and hopefully
4:50 pm
i'm a huge fan of his and his organization and i'm just happy to pay respect to them. >> did you -- did you meet him? did it happen while you were gone that he came and signed? how did that happen? >> at the end of the skate yesterday, i didn't get a chance to meet him. he's under some pretty tight security, so i don't think they would let a montreal player into a pats locker room. >> you guys had a tough month of december. you have a tough long trip -- right here. long trip on the road. would you say this is the perfect scenario nor the team to kind of forget december and start fresh for 2016? >> yeah. new year. big win. yeah, hopefully january is a lot nicer to us. >> you're doing a great job. >> yeah. a big win. two points. can't argue with that. >> question for brendan. did it feel like residing a woke again when he tried to rip your head off? did it feel like you were back
4:51 pm
>> i was anticipating that would happen. it was nice to be back. you know, i just had so much fun, along with all my teammates, and like i said, it was a great team effort. there were a couple times where they pushed us and they were pushing hard, end of the second period the save he made, that's a big momentum swing. patch scoring. when they made it 3-1 and those are moments when you look at our team those are things that we can build off of and early on in the year these are the things that propelled us into the start that we got. and 2016 is off to a pretty good start so hopefully this continues. >> mike, just from a personal standpoint, what can you gain from a win like this? >> everyone is huge. it doesn't matter the stage. i'm just trying to do so anything i can do to help the team right now. my confidence is -- always stays the same no matter what game it is. no matter what the team is going
4:52 pm
two points today. >> brendan, you had a very solid first period. you seemed in total control during the first period you gave them only three shots. you had 14. whatwhat was the mindset of the team in the locker room before the first period. >> we talked about enjoying the moment, but we also talked about at the end of the game we didn't want to just be participants. we wanted to come away with a win and we did that, i think. everyone showed up, everyone competed and it wasn't hard to find energy. wasn't hard to find the motivation for us to come out and play. and we played the way we've played all year. we made the defense work, go back, hit pox pucks. >> was this scenario anything you envisioned at the beginning of the season, not only playing this game, but getting to start? >> not really, no. the first step was making the team
4:53 pm
so carrey price, this game is marked off for him. hockey is a crazy game. so you have to make sure you're prepared for the opportunities that you get. >> brendan, yesterday you said that you want to be parted of the solution. you weren't just the only answer. but you wanted to be part of the solution. what about your game and the team's game? can you take forward that can be part of the solution to for the struggles. i said all along when i was hurt i wanted to come back. i only wanted to come back if i could help the team win and be a contributor. everybody did that. nobody tried to do too much. nobody did anything they're not normally asked to do. shift after shift we went out and got the job done and from mike out to the forwards everyone go a good job. everyone contributed, and it was just a fun night to be a part of. >> few more questions. >> brendan, when mike makes a save like the one he did towards the end of the second period, does that kind of give you guys a sense that,
4:54 pm
today and what did it mean for you guys to put that performance together in this game. >> i think i even saw coach smile a little bit. that's rare to see, so it was certainly -- certainly something you don't expect. not a chance you want to be given up too much, but when a guy can make a save like that, give us that confidence going into the third period. i mean, playing in front of him you feel like he's got your back and he did that tonight and a huge performance and i know it meant a lot to him and pretty special to be a part of. >> last question. >> mike, brendan said he wasn't the answer, he just wanted to be part of the solution, but was he the answer? >> he certainly provided a spark. you know, he does a lot of things right. he's very good goalie. i know that super experience. made a great pass during a patch and great hand-eye coordination. huge welcome back game and the spark that we needed right now.
4:55 pm
>> local boy, mike condon with the moment, the highlight of his career at gillette stadium here today. unfortunately it comes in a montreal canadiens sweater, a 5-1 win over the bruins. we'll have much more on the bruins bug interviews from the locker room in a few minutes. liz, adam, take it away. >> joe, we'll see you again soon.
