11:40 pm
carson palmer and made them adjust and have to throw underneath. i thought it was just an outstanding coaching job by the patriots staff. >> on the other hand if you are bruce arians, you know the next five games on the schedule are all against teams that didn't make the playoffs a year ago, and you came close to beating the patriots. granted, the patriots were without brady and gronkowski as we mentioned all night long. if you are bruce arians, what are you telling your team in the locker room now or when you reconvene for pr >> you can't get down over one loss. but this is a game they obviously felt like they were going to win. you are playing at home. you never want to lose at home. you are playing to a backup quarterback. a banged up team. you had a chance to win it. you get over that as every coach does. hey, let's look at the tape. examine our mistakes. improve. we have a lot of football left to play. we are not going to hang our head over one loss.

it out with the extent of how much bruising running from legarret blunt. we have team coverage of the win out west begining with you're oh sports director joe amorsino here in the newsroom. jimmy garopollo and patriots shock the cardinals in this season opener. the pats led all the way to the fourth quarter then retook that lead thanks to a drive where garappolo converied three times on third down and you saw how it ended, a missed field goal by arizona. let's start from the beginning and break it down. in the nfl and those smelling salts woke him you early. first patriots possession, he leads him 74 yards and 8 plays, capped off by this pretty pitching catch to chris hogan for a 37 yard touchdown. they led it 10-0 after one. defense got after carson papper. chris long racking up his first sack as a peyton third and two forcing cardinals to punt. is sewn capable of turning on d in the desert too. marcus golden brings down
11:51 pm
look who is there to pounce on it. that's right. the former patriot chandler jones. birds get flag for the excessive celebration but take over near middlefield and the cards would cash in 11 plays later palmer hits old reliable larry fitzgerald for a three yard score. pats led it 10-7 at the half. garappolo started the second half like he started the game leading the pats on another scoring drive of big play in this one, nice 28 yard hookup with the rookie wide out malcom mitchell, legarret blunt in the end zone. a play later and it was 17-7 patriots but blunt giveth and then giveth away. next possession here frosty iraqer knocks it loose from the big back, campbell recovers and cardinals were in business and david johnson makes sure the pats pay for the give away pounding it home from a yard out. cardinal cut into that lead. it was 17-14. we go to the fourth quarter. pats on the move bennett throws the brakes on the drive hauling
11:52 pm
pats settle for a field goal and that made it 20-14. pats haddown a nice job of keeping johnson bottled up. other than that touchdown run but he gets away here later in the fourth spinning away from a gag old would be takelers finding the sideline and breaking off a huge 45 yard gain to the red area and once again palmer would cap it off looking fitzgerald's way pretty catch of the corner over the end zone. real tough catch over logan ryan cardinals in front, 21-garappolo and pats hanging tough though embarking on a drive down. one of them a 33 yard connection to danny amendola. stephen gostkowski capped it off with a 32 yard field goal with 344 to go. the cardinals driving late out of time outs on third and 23. palmer looks to brown, he has him there, an 18 yard gain set up chandler for the 47 yard field goal. unbelievable. he misses it. no brady, no gronk, no problem
11:53 pm
the desert. trey daerr reporting live in glendale, arizona. trey? >> reporter: joe, you touched on it right at the end with. all of those names missing from the patriots lineup we had a lot of theater in arizona. this of course the site where they won super bowl 49. totally different team out there on the field led by jimmy garappolo. we really wondered after the preseason just how much would they open up this play book and we got our answer tonight. they took the handcuffs jimmy garappolo and let him go down the field and do itty. the offense not looking really anything different than what we've seen from tom brady in the past. garappolo early taking a lot of comfort in finding julian edelman. went to him right away on the first drive. got the ball in the hands of their best play maker on the field and let him do the rest. and late in the first drive garappolo making a statement, getting vertical that touchdown to chris hogan putting people on alert that he is the real deal
11:54 pm
going to be walked all over here in arizona. garrappolo outstanding tonight. read some numbers from the game. 24-33, 264 have a town down to hogan only sacked twice improvised very well with his legs, spread the ball around. most importantly tonight, he did not turn the ball over. that was probably the biggest difference in this game. the patriots did turn over twice but none of them came from jimmy garoppolo throwing an interception. we'll have a lot more coming to you live in phoenix. we are on the field. we'll have lucker room reaction hear from jimmy garoppolo and head coach bill belichick. for now joe live in arizona let's send it back to you. >> reporter: we're we'll have much more with trey but right now we have super bowl 35 champ with us tonight and of course former patriots pro bowler tim fox with us and gentlemen, we have to talk about that final scoring drive because when tom brady is leading this team, that's the story of the game and tonight it's jimmy garappolo converting three times on third down. third and 15, third and three and third and 11. start us off, mike.
11:55 pm
personified what he is all about. to that point you saw the come off the bus a little bit from that strip sack if the second half he was getting hot a lot but that third and 15 where he converts here, most young quarterbacks you see him, he steps up in the pocket that. natural urge to i'm going to run. i doesn't what to make a mistake. i willy for another series of downs. he on out ball, looks down field and makes a great ballet to amendola. third and two, he as pressure in his face. he throws it where he can get it. that ball sails behind him. that's an easy pick i believe showed what he was all about and had a heck a game placing against a good defense. i think he was a pleasant surprise for probablien except for the patriot coaching staff because i think they kind of knew in the back of their minds that they knew this kid could go out and perform and he certainly did today. so he answered a lot of questions, he put the ball where it needed to be put. he had the one fumble which was unfortunately and that's the one thing as a back up quarterback very hard for you to prepare for because you never get hit in practice. you never get in those stations
11:56 pm
from you behind. a get a little nervous at times hen he sits in the pocket an you see guys coming and bee00 him. you know tom brady knows where those guys are. he does know where they are. >> reporter: if you think it's easy ask carson palmer because he had the same opportunity on the next drive. they start out conservative here and then ultimately it's going to cost them because they are running out of tile, they don't have time outs and we all know how it ended, but take us through what was going on with arizona here on this final offensive drive. i don't get, arians is a at this patriots defense the last three drives, they score two touchdowns in a rea 35 yard drive you have them on their heels here, you run the ball, you run a fake screen double screen back. i didn't know what they were going to end you get a penalty. you keep the pedal to the medal. you had fitzgerald getting and a halfups you want and they got very conservative here and but him behind the ball. they had the patriots on their heels there. yeah. you have to question that the time outs that he called using hits time outs with four minutes to go in the game.
11:57 pm
was correct and they had a chance to win the football game had it not been for them getting setback in that big loss that put them out of field goal range that he would have done the right thing and in temperatures of calling time outs but patriots need to figure out something a way to take away fitzgerald. they will be a good football team down the road. mike nexted things started to unravel a little bit for that offensive line the prose around garappolo but tim to start out the second half and come right back out there on another although and a lot of credit needs to be given to josh mcdaniels because this was very well choreograph. no question. i think the patriots had somewhat of an advantage because they didn't know what to expect from grab they didn't know what the patriots were going to cop out with. they had a good idea he was probably going to have a controlled game plan but i think they did a great job with this game plan and obviously no one expected the patriots to win this game. they were nine point underdog and for them to come up and be able to win in this fashion is
11:58 pm
jimmy garappolo early in the game i in the the ability to run the football which the patriots last year could not do. you look at the numbers, ran the ball well, ran third and four, got a first down. in the second heart part that was julian edelman and the defense and arizona inch ehad him at times giving him 8 or 9 yard cushions so you had in that first drive and they end up scoring three easy throws from jimmy garappolo to julian edelman that most quarterbacks can make and i think that got his confidence because you look at that first play of the game i believe out m he gets setted down with three pitches and catchesed a lot had to do with the defense playing too far off edelman. >> reporter: much more coming up in the show. we're also take you back to arizona from live reports from trey daerr and interviews from inside the patriots locker room but right now we send it back to kim and adam. >> anchor: joe, and danny amendola is showing patriotism before tonight's game in arizona. the wide receiver was seen gripping the american flag during the national anthem and

their own in a show of support for 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick the two raised their fists in protest to call for social justice. >> anchor: as joe mentioned we'll have more from sewn own as our such night show down coverage continues. also coming up, a sign of support from tom brady is gone. crews removing that large banner a little more than a week after it first went up at gillette. plus, nfl commissioner roger goodell opening up about handing down brady is a deflategate suspension. why goodell says he stay right here with 7 news. we'll go back out live to arizona to continue our team coverage of tonight's big win against the cardinals. >> anchor: and we're following developing stories here tonight. hillary clinton cab sells her west coast campaign trip after a health scare in manhattan today. witnesses and video captures her stumbling and nearly collapsing. her doctors says she has been battling pneumonia since friday but on the road to recovery. nick emons joins us with more. >> reporter: yeah, adam, late tonight we learned clinton
