this time they were searching for a missing swimmer. a 26-year-old man. the search has been called off for the moment because of lightning and thunderstorm that rolled through minutes ago. this is again at great herring pond in plymouth. dive teams were in the water around 2 hours. there were reports of a missing person in the water before 4 this afternoon. 5 boats and more than half a dozen divers in the water sear swimmer. the u.s. coast guard sent up a helicopter earlier. there has been a grid search under way and other efforts put in place t. appears to be a recovery effort at this point. a witness told us that 2 men and a woman were on a boat when they jumped in the water to go swimming without anchoring that boat down. the boat started to get away from them.

keeping practices by the police department to be deeply troubling and unacceptable. >> anchor: 7's byron barnet has more from braintree on the fall out from the tampering. >> reporter: missing evidence from the braintree police department now threatening to upend hundreds of criminal cases in that city. dismissed a drug case he's in custody after police say he was caught on surveillance video allegedly trying to kidnap a store in august. citing the disappearance of guns money and drugs from the evidence room asked the judge to throw out the drug charge against o'brian. authorities say they had a strong case. >> the current state of the evidence in braintree as well as meetings my office had with the mayor we cannot prosecute case at this stage.

officer in charge of the evidence room. it was days after braintree police began an audit of the evidence room. officer suzan zapaty committed suicide. a self inflicted gun shot wound to the torso. 8 guns, $70,000 in cash and a lot of drugs were missing. defense attorney peter elkin says the drug case against one hold. he suspects the charges will be dropped. >> in a drug case you have to prove there was drugs. if you can't do that the integrity of the system would fall apart if the district attorney did not start dismissing some of these cases. >> reporter: braintree mayor says new protocols have been put in place in the police evidence room which is staffed with new

>> anchor: route 9 eastbound in newton this afternoon where 2 people were sent to the hospital after a car crashed with a telephone pole. because crews had to repair that pole and remove the downed wires. after the crash the fire department had to use hydraulic equipment to pry the car open. 2 people were sent to brig hamen women's. the injuries were mino comparison to the damage to the car and the pole. avoid the road tonight and find another way around it. >> anchor: sky 7 over bridge water where a junk yard fire sends up thick smoke. this was the scene earlier today. as you see several trucks on the scene working to knock down those flames. >> anchor: an hours long stand off at a brent wood new hampshire home came to a deadly end after a man committed

apartment complex. police found the man dead inside the home. saying he killed himself. people who lived there had to stay inside their homes while the stand off took place. no one else was injured. >> anchor: the police chief in in glockester. >> reporter: and the mayor now is calling this a on matter. everyone in town is wondering what this well received and well known chief of police is doing. glosster's police chief is off the job. everyone in town is wondering why. >> i'm kind of shocked. i don't know what's going on. um, nobody is really saying anything. >> reporter: i don't have any idea. but he seemed like a good man to me. >> reporter: the city's mayor
