what should we do? he said call the cops. >>reporter: what happened when the police came up do to him? >>man: he went for his gun and the cop pulled out his gun and just shot. boom, boom. >>reporter: his father spoke to nbc news. did you know your son was doing this? >>man: no, i had no idea. >>reporter: investigators say they have evidence that ahmad khan rahami to the explosion. the pipe bomb that exploded near a new jersey charity run and the backpack full of pipe bombs also found in new jersey. one exploded when a robot cut a wire. a building superintendent showed me some of the surveillance pictures he gave investigators shows rahami dragging a suitcase

i talked to so many people who are commuting on the way to work a little after 8:00 this morning. everyone's cellphones went off. they saw everyone's cellphone was going off with the all alert asking them to be on the look out for this suspect. it brought everyone together on the single task of looking for the suspect. it's something you may be familiar with in massachusetts with amber alerts and the tornado last month where people were surprised the investigators were able to reacho cellphones for a good cause. >> all right, dan live for us once again in new jersey tonight. so we heard from the accused bomber's family and tonight, we're beginning to learn more about his personality and what may be behind his recent bizarre behavior. nick is continuing our coverage in the newsroom. >>reporter: kim, authorities revealing new details about his past including multiple trips overseas to afghanistan and evidence that he may have been

unknown and not on a watch list. born in afghanistan, he lived in elizabeth, new jersey. he graduated from high school there, classmates say he didn't make much of an impression. he went on to county college to study criminal justice but dropped out. his family owns a fried chicken restaurant. neighbors complained it was too loud and opened too late. the police were often called in. the family filed a federal lawsuit five years o, claiming a neighbor said "muslims make too much trouble in this country." the question now, was it a dispute over the family business that enraged him or something else? us intelligence officials tell us that ahmad khan rahami, his brother, and father travelled to pakistan and afghanistan multiple times over the past

shows a level of sophistication that we didn't see in boston. i believe that they don't do this by looking at the internet. they have to have someone showing them how to do it. >>reporter: just like the brothers, that will be part of the investigation to see if he had help. we're live at the finish line. stay with 7 news on air and online for the latest into the terror investigation in new york and new jersey. you can get instant updates whdh.com. new tonight, police are investigating a bomb threat. so far, detectives say the threat is a hoax but someone called police around 6:00 this evening after finding a bag of shot gun shells on the sidewalk near her house. the bullet casings had messages written on them referencing terror and a bomb placed on a bus in town. while police don't believe there's a real threat, they're looking closely into who might have done that.

playing the blame game as the driver from the deadly newton pizza shop crash pleads not guilty. the driver's attorney says his ms caused him to lose control. prosectors say they have evidence that says that's not true. >>reporter: both sides arguing back and forth today if that man's health had anything to do with that devastating crash that happened right here at this he pleaded not guilty to two charges, motor vehicle homicide. meanwhile, the victims' families in court, hearing it all. walking into court with a limp, castler, appearing for the first time in front of a judge since that deadly night. >>man: not guilty. >>reporter: prosectors say the 55-year-old from newton plowed this suv deep into the sweet

organized, underground medical marijuana deliver that few people know about. it's a potentially risky route for chief. >>man: you go to a patient's home, somewhere we've been many times before. she's a nice friend and appreciates what we do. >>reporter: chief showed us proof he's allowed to possess and use marijuana for medical purposes. he's also registered as a marijuana caregiver. but exactly what that means in massachusetts, a caregiver is allowed by law, to buy, grow, and assist a single patient with medical marijuana. that means chief is only allowed to deliver the drug to the one person he's specifically authorized to help as a caregiver. and you're a caregiver? >>man: i am, yes. >>rporter: the person we're delivering to, you're not her caregiver? >>man: no. hello, it's chief.

is legal. >>woman: caregivers cannot sell a profit for dispensing medical marijuana. if we were to hear from a caregiver going outside of the parameters, we would of course, investigate that. >>reporter: chief says he doesn't get paid for making deliveries and believes what he's doing is perfectly legal and morally right. >>man: how do you deny it to people? i don't understand. >>reporter: right now, 30 thousand people in the state of massachusett to receive medical marijuana but there were only 7 dispensaries in the state. very impressive rainfall totals coming out of where the bulls eye was. 4.2 inches of rain, more than three and a half inches in royalston. unfortunately, the areas inside of the extreme drought conditions area that you see here in the bright orange didn't

it's about a third of an inch for boston. third of an inch for plymouth as well. we wait for the next round of rain and it doesn't look like it's coming in the near future. we have a couple of spotty showers that are lingering for cape cod and the islands overnight tonight and early in the morning. this front is really slow moving offshore and we're stuck with this soupy air mass. temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. we're not going to drop back a whole lot more. 69 in boston, very close to the air temperature, it means that the air is very saturated and thus, we have fog and fog reducing visibility to under a mile. something to pay attention to not only late tonight but also early tomorrow morning for the early morning commute. maybe a few showers in the morning hours mainly for

afternoon, clearing. the bad news is, we do keep the humidity with us tomorrow but much improvement for wednesday and thursday. very summer like weather that's returning to the forecast. topping up in the mid 80s for the next several days. then that cold front rolls in late friday into saturday, maybe a few spotty showers and a big cool down to follow. boy, are we ready for that. have a good night. >> you, too. how about this guy? the mspca and he's lucky he's even there to talk about it. little guy called callahan because he was found on the side of the road in the callahan tunnel. he was hit by a car. a trooper noticed him, stopped, cared for him, and brought him to the mspca. the vet says he'll be recovered and ready for adoption in six weeks. the red sox are on fire.
