more than 20 years of this show up until 2001. she is survived by her daughter lisa jones, her two grand daughters and her partner of 24 years, steven hamm whether was living with her in colorado. vicki was 71 and had been battling cancer for three years. she was a pioneer and trail blazer, not only president of boston association of black journalists in the 80s and 90s who pushed the envelope with unique programming such as the question of race, an hour-long news program that discussed diversity and race relations. let's not take a quick look at her journ eye of courage a one-hour prime time special in 0988 on the 3 forest-year history of blacks in massachusetts. >> i'm telling you i hailted bag slave from the day i was born

organization, we have invited councilor jackson and co-chair armani white. welcome back. >> i appreciate you invitesing me back. >> councilman, explain what propelled you to initiate reclaim roxbury? >> as a councilor who represents roxbury, there are very real throats to the future of roxbury. only 19% of the folks in roxbury are actually home owners w between roxbury and back bay, there is a 33-year difference in life expectancy, a lot of things going on about health and wellness, and some of the rezone housing that was built right at jackson square, it is 0950 for a one-bedroom, and even on your salary, that is a stretch for all of us.

neighborhood and the opportunity that we have in roxbury with $1.2 million square feet of undeveloped land. that is hallowed ground. so it is up to us as this next generation and with armani that we are actually using this land in a way that helps affordable housing are neighborhood, made it safer, better, and a brighter future. and we want the people who live in roxbury to have an opportunity to build it up and also be able to stay in the center of the city of boston. >> byron: armani white, co-chair of reclaim roxbury. sbha are some of the community effort and what they have yielded news far? >> we meet every sunday at 3 pm. and we go out and start in

engage people on the street or knock on doors. one of the best days that we had was in the white career street housing development. we would go in up and down each near and knock on doors and some people would open the door and close it, the sight of someone trying to talk about things kind of thing while their homes are on the chopping block, some invited us in the home. we tell them that we are here to be a part of creating a advice for roxbury residents and we going on in neighborhoods. i'm 25 and if i want to live in roxbury i have to be a part of making that possible. >> byron: okay. tito, why the sudden interest in roxbury from so many developers, that is a dd thing or bad thing? >> i'm happy they finally figured out how awesome roxbury is, proximity to downtown and amazing people and amazing culture, and amazing food that

of michael j. fox. and we have a lot of people who come to my toss a daily basis who are getting pushed out, about to be pushed out, and we have productory folks in the real estate industry who pushed people out of the neighborhood. that is unacceptable. and we will definitely fight, and how we fight and wage that fight is for the commute to come together and future of roxbury. neighborhood associations, community organizations and young people, like armani, coming together to determine the future of roxbury. and what it will look like and we don't want it to look different than it does now. >> byron: tell me about some ways that residents can have a voice in all this? >> we have meetings every last thursday of the month at roxbury community college, and one in

september 29. and james jennings came out and spoke on the massive plan, and basically the history of the development in roxbury. so that residents could revisit that old time kind of... >> byron: where can residents go to get more information about how to compete involved? >> they can come out on a thursday, last thursday of the months and check us out on facebook, reclaim roxbury, our website is this close to being done. you can look for that on our facebook coming in a couple of weeks. ron run councilor jackson, what is the hottest issue topic, with respect to all this, going on in rocks rx right now. in the coming weeks? >> we have developments, we have northeastern university that did something that disrespected and disregarded our community. they recently got approval after

with them to cite an 8-story dorm they went ahead and overrode the community and they are citing a 22-story dorm right on columbus avenue. we have to guard against predatory types of behavior like that that can flip neighborhoods and communities. in addition if you come to roxbury you will hire people from the neighborhood and community, there is a mandate that you hire people who, people of color, 50%, residents so a head's up to those folks who want to come and build in the great part of the city of boston and a great part of roxbury. >> byron: this is a collaboration between your office and mit and roxbury community college. what role does each play? >> this is run by roxbury residents, an organic grass roots thing.

>> byron: national data shows ladown owes have two times the risk of developing diabetes compare to the white population. members of the joslin diabetes center launch a latino diabetes initiative to tackle this ush. to continue this initiative they are hosting its fifth annual fundraiser. this year's event will take place on thursday, october six in a new venue, space 57 at the revere hotel in boston.

of the latino diabetes initiative at joslin and renowned chef jose duarte, owner of a peruvian italian eatery in the north end who will serve up delicious food at the fund rawser. jose's wife was diagnosed with gestational diabetes than when she was pregnant and has been very involved since that time. welcome to "urban update" gentlemen. and thank you for coming in. doctor if welcome back. can you give viewers an idea of how profession lent diabetes is within the latino community? >> thank you, first of all thank you for having us back. this is a great cause. let me just say that diabetes unfortunately is a very common problem in the general population. and people don't know sometimes that diabetes kills more people can all answers and hiv together. -- cancers and hiv together.

death in the population and third cause for blindness and kidney disease. so diabetes could be a devastating disease, very common. in the latino community as you said, it is twice as common. 22% of the latino population has type two diabetes. it is appearing in very young people. there is some staggering statistics, 50% of children latino children born in the 2,000 or after are predicted to develop type 2 diabeteses. we won't to prevent this huge problem and raise awareness about this in the community and provide the best care that we can. >> byron: we are proud that joslin is the largest clinical care and research facility. many people don't know that? >> we have been working in diabetes for many years, the

field for a lot of different reasons. and within our institution we are focusing on underserved populations. certain communities with a higher risk of diabetes and its complications and we want to do the best that we can to help everybody. some need an practice hand. >> byron: chef, how is woor wife? the main reason that you are involved? >> she was pregnant with my son o she developed gestational diabetes and me as a chevy was responsible to provide her with meals and trying to understand the food and nutrition, will do to her sugar levels was a discovery at a points. so i really got involved in supporting the joslin because i thought that at that point nutrition was very important.

wonderful country i wanted to do something for the community as well. all these efforts try to help the community in general and it is in the just latinos. i think everybody needs to be aware of the project problems. for instance, jose's wife is a great example, name have diabetes during pregnancy, a high risk of developing diabetes later on. but that can be preventedded or delayed. 50% of the people with diabetes don't know they have the disease because they can go for many years without any about this and that is how to help everybody in best possible way. >> byron: you moved to a bigger venue, where is the event and we weekend look at photos of some past events? >> two purposes. one is to raise awareness about this problem and to celebrate the fact that we are really champions in the fight against diabetes. we are making great progress and

they can experience play activities. our prairie dogtown has a pop-up in it so kids can go in and pop-up in the exhibit where the prairie dogs are running around. and a red pan that exhibit and across from that bamboo climbers and children can exercise and play like animals and the whole concept is to teach at a very young age that all human beings, and all animals and creatures need housing. they play, they need food and they have water. to get the chin back into nature,-- the children back into nature. a giant eagle's nest, and look out over the children's zoo. really incredible. >> byron: that really is. i always loved zoos since i was a kid and i enjoy take mig concern to the zoo. but you are making it into into more than just looking and pointsing at the animals?
