>> christa: breaking news at noon. hurricane matthew pounding haiti after making landfall when it hit this category four storm was pabing maximum sustained winds. near 145 miles per hour. many other areas bracing for the storm also. it is expected to impact cuba and the u.s. possibly. in fact, florida is declaring a state of emergency with parts of the state already under a hurricane watch. >> kris: hurricane matthew is a deadly category four hurricane approaching florida. if matthew's directly impacts florida, there will be massive

seen in years. >> christa: dangerous system. welcome to 7 news at noon today. i'm christa delcamp. >> kris: i'm kris anderson in for sarah this noon. the latest info we have on matthew. it is still a powerful category four storm. packing winds of 145 miles per hour. it is also moving north at about ten miles an hour. although it's still days away, the latest update now puts us, new england, in the cone of uncertainty. let's get over the meteorologist chris lambert. he has been tracking matthew storm. >> chris: we are in the cone on day five. that would be on sunday. right now we have a long ways to go to get there, though. the storm right over haiti. it continues its journey off to north. you can see all the hurricane warnings that are in place across the bahamas, hurricane watch in place, across florida and you get closer to miami, there is a tropical storm watch in place. that extends through portions of the keys here. it is going to be a close call with florida. no question, though, this goes right across the bahamas.

145 miles an hour. this will take us through the bahamas as a category three or four hurricane on wednesday into thursday. and then late on thursday, into thursday night, it gets close to the east coast of florida. now, if it's a hundred miles offshore, florida will be impacted by the storm but the winds would stay off shore. they have to be on guard: anywhere north of west palm beach. then it closes in on the carolina coastline over the as we get into sunday morning, you notice how close the national hurricane center is with this storm to southern new england. now, with that in mind, also note how wide that cone is. i mean, this is 575 miles from one edge to one edge. so if the storm is more down in this area, winds not as much of a concern. we will still get some rain out of it.

starts working toward florida. curving up the carolina coastline and the interaction with the trough coming in. and this front coming in. if the trough is more oriented south to north, it follows that line up the coast: that is what we have to see and iron out here over the next couple of days. i think minimal here, we are dealing with at least some rain on sunday and a lot of rough surf and some pounding especially across southern new england. we have low astronomical tides over the weekend. again, the greatest wind impact would be pending that exact track. more on the forecast ahead. >> kris: chris, thank you so much. matthew made land-fall at 7:00 our time this morning. four deaths are being attributed to this massive storm. right now, matthew, a category four storm is slamming into the tip of the southwestern peninsula of haiti. this is the strongest hurricane in the atlantic in

>> they had the sirens. they started locking down and evacuating buildings. it became pretty real pretty quickly. >> reporter: social media posts spread fast about a creepy clown. >> when you go on the phone, you see 7 different schools in new england all have the same issue. it is definitely something that is frightening and something that probably is planned by someone. that is very scary. >> reporter: overnight at penn state, thousands took to the streets. some carrying baseball bats after scary clown photos were posted. in swansea, people called police about a freaky-looking clown walking around a mall parking lot. and in agawam, this video was enough to give some people nightmares. it was all part of a promotion for an event in town called scare-fest, in town. >> we never intended to scare anyone. we were just trying to make a really bad viral video. >> reporter: at merrimack college, they quickly determined it was a hoax. no one is laughing about it. >> just irresponsible. it's a fire alarm on social

>> reporter: here at merrimack college, they evacuated one building. they searched the entire campus. they found nothing suspicious. in north andover, victoria warren, 7 news. >> christa: crews in charlestown working to repair a water main break there. this started early this morning. it sent water gushing on to arrow street. the water has been shut off. all the roads are back open at this hour. a house up in flames in revere earlier this morning. this happened on krusette avenue with the fire in the back of the home. then spreading from there. no one was injured. the red cross has responded to help out three people and a dog displaced by the fire. officials are still looking into the cause. >> kris: the wilmington superintendent is resigning her position weeks after police arrested her for dui. she was arrested in august. but she didn't inform the school committee. members, in fact, only found out about the arrest last week. during monday's emergency meeting, she offered a resignation and later

that i have caused my family, friends, colleagues, and members of this community. i also apologize for not disclosing this information myself, but it has been a difficult time for me and my loved ones. >> kris: school committee members are busy working the find an interim superintendent. >> christa: the gloucester police chief fired after disturbing allegations. officials say that leonard campanello deleted evidence of threatening text messages that he sent to multiple women with whom he had had relationships. officials also claim that he lied about sending his cell phone to his attorney, saying it was actually stolen. campanello's attorney says the allegations are not true. >> chief camp nello's actions were entirely unethical and unacceptable. >> this investigation has been a witch-hunt from the beginning. and the reasons given by the city for terminating the contract had nothing to do

>> christa: the chief is nationally recognized, receiving accolades from the president for his unique approach to battling the opioid crisis. >> kris: some breaking news from wareham now. the victim in a hit-and-run from last night has died. police are still searching for the driver responsible. police say the crash happened on cranberry highway in wareham yesterday. the 56-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital where, again, the update this afternoon is he passed away. a public memorial service being held for iconic golfer arnold palmer. thousands are attending this service in pennsylvania. including one-time rival jack nicklaus. palmer died back on september 25 at the age of 86. >> kris: tom brady is talking about what it's like to be back with his teammates. the quarterback joined the pats yesterday once that deflate-gate suspension was over with. jennifer eagan has more on

>> christa: you know what? you know, the sun didn't do its job here today. a little cloudy still. >> kris: we peaked out yesterday. a nice break from the weekend. we are still hanging on to. that we are also talking about matthew. it continues barreling through the caribbean, chris. a serious situation for folks living down there. >> chris: it is. over to the dominican here. tremendous amounts of rain getting forced up the higher terrain. you have to remember, mountainous terrain down there. it is going rain hard down that way. in fact, locally, over two feet. mud-slides, a concern as well. obviously, with the strong winds on the western edges of that country. then you take a look at what's going on here. they have expanded the hurricane warnings all through the bahamas. then you get over to the east coast of florida. and there is a hurricane

because it is going to be a close call down the line. with matthew. and the exact set-up on where it's going to go from this point on out. you take a look at the track, the forecasted cone here. from the national hurricane center. we give you the track. we show you the latest update. winds of 145 miles per hour. as it continues that motion off to the north and eventually off to the north and west here. as we get into the weekend, we watch to see how it bounces off the carolina coastline. ther a opportunities here. you know, if this goes on the southern side of the cone, a few hundred miles south of us, we don't deal with an awful lot of wind here. we will get rain pulled into new england. likely, a drenching rain sometime late saturday night or into sunday. if it does, indeed, move into the center cone, we have to increase the risk for high wind speeds. especially down through the south coast of new england. if it is over on the left side, there is a chance of it being this side of the cone. then we would talk about

across much of the mid-atlantic and then into new england. this is going to be your wind flow. this will push this thing out to sea off the carolina coastline. if it digs in a little harder and the winds are more from the south to the north, then it works its way up the coastline and if it is on the fast track, that would be the case. the timing and position of everything is crucial to what we see. the at least see rainfall in here. most likely on sunday. 62 in boston. sunshine not doing its thing? fire it, right? it will do its thing later this afternoon. more sun continues to back on. in we do watch this area of high pressure really wedge in over the next several days. so there is a lot of talk about matthew. for good reason. down the line into the weekend. but we do have several nice days ahead of us. as we go through the middle part and end of the week. for more on the forecast, over to danielle. >> danielle: thanks, chris. matthew, our 13th named storm

nicole. which is even farther out in the atlantic. that is our 14th named storm of the season. and on average, we do have about 11 to 12 named storms. so we are starting to get above that number. so tropical storm nicole out farther than matthew. here is matthew. you can see it's northwest of it. it does have winds of 50 miles per hour. it is moving northwest at eight miles per hour. it will remain steady over the next couple of days. as we head i weaken. so fall is here. it is feeling like it here, too. 27 days to halloween. 33 days until the end of daylight savings time. temperatures are going up. our average high temperatures nor time of year, are in the upper 60's. so after today, we are drying things out wednesday into the weekend. until some uncertainty as we head into the weekend from

packing winds again, 145 miles per hour. it is also moving north at ten miles an hour. and although it is still days away, the latest update now shows the storm possibly headed our way. let's get over to chris lambert with the very latest on this storm's track. >> chris: we will see some impact from the storm. the question is how much, depenning on where in that forecast cone five days out from now matthew does track. very close to the western edges o'. >> haiti right now. moving off-shore, as it did co north wind at ten miles an hour. wind sustained at 145 miles an hour. next up, the eastern tip of cuba. this will traverse the bahamas here. going to be a dangerous storm. a damaging storm in the bahamas. no question about that. category three or four throughout much of the bahamas. you get into the forecast period of thursday night into friday morning. how close does it get to the florida coastline.

offshore by a hundred miles, then it is much better for the sunshine state. if it tracks along the coast luhin, then they deal with higher winds as well as plenty of storm surge moving in. most likely to get the landfall in the u.s. if there is one, could be on the northern side of south carolina and north carolina. as chris mentioned, we are in the cone. look how wide that cone is when you are talking about sunday morning. five days out from now. now, we look at a lot of forecast models. they have been edging off to the west. the last couple of days. that is why you hav however, some of the latest information did feature the low, the center of the storm more toward the south side of the cone. there is plenty of ways to go in forecasting this. you know, i do think no matter what the track, we are going to get some rain. this is one forecast model. saying enough tropical moisture gets pulled up that we may get two, three, four,

matthew, actually, our 13th. now we are watching tropical storm nicole. our 14th named storm of the season. we are getting above that average number a little bit. nicole right now, is farther out in the atlantic than matthew. it does have winds of 50 miles per hour. moving northwest at eight miles per hour. it is going to remain steady over the next couple of days. by friday, when it is expected to start to weaken and continue to track northwest. so we are well into fall here in new england. 33 days until daylight savings time. it is starting to feel more fall-like out there as well. temperatures will trend up over the next couple of days. a pleasant surpritz for christa. 67 tomorrow. then into those low 70's thursday. friday, 75. on average, normal high temperatures for this year, in the mid to upper 60's. we are also drying out over the next couple of days. as far as rain chances go, dry wednesday through friday. a lot of uncertainty as we head into the weekend. for the rest of the forecast,

june of 2013. she was driving on geary street in dorchester. this pole came crashing down on to her car. the transformer hit the hood which immediately caught fire. inside the car were her young daughter and three others, including another child. >> i can't believe we even made et out of there. i almost lost everything. not just my life but my daughter. >> reporter: three years later, a second pole at the same location also fell. >> the poles are becoming an issue. they are becoming an issue to a point that, you know, people's lives are at stake here. >> reporter: the city of salem electrician says cities and towns notified the utility companies about dangerous or damaged poles that need to be replaced. the wait can be very long. >> how long have you been waiting for them to fix it?

come down and fix it. >> we don't keep on their back and yell at them, they are not coming. it is a major concern. >> reporter: many times the fix is temporary. and that creates another problem. the massachusetts department of public utilities is the agency that keeps track of the damageed poles that are attached to newer ones, becoming what's called double poles. designed to be a temporary fix. there are more than 0,000 of them on the agency's list. and hundreds of those been on it for more than ten years. including this one in east boston that was put in place in 2004. >> to be quite honest with you, it is a little embarrassing. >> reporter: state representative says these poles are a problem because there is no enforcement or penalty for utility companies that are slow to fix them. >> this is not rocket science. when you add a new pole, you remove the old pole. if it is a problem, you should figure out a way to deal with
