emergency and matthew is surging on. daytona beach area was rocked by the storms strongest bands. so we begin now with a report from that area. >> reporter: hurricane matthew is lashing florida. the eye hugging the coastline as it moves north. heavy rain, violent winds and dangerous storm surge that could reach up to 11 feet. >> we are very concerned about the worst effects are likely to come. >> reporter: the ocean pushed inland. >> we should back away. >> yeah, i know. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands are without power after matthew started it's assault overnight. south florida was spared major damage. flore florians he'ded warnings.

of florida. >> we're on the front end of this hurricane. we're not on the back end. we don't know how bad the damage could end up. >> reporter: georgia and south carolina bracing for the impact. land fall near charleston is a possibility. >> our barrier islands. the concern now is the fact that we need people to move. >> reporter: the governor warning those evacuate time is running out. >> at that point it will start to be too late for anyone to evacuate. we would encourage all of you to take shelter somewhere above ground. this is going to hurt. >> reporter: millions of people still in the path of the storm as matthew churns in the atlantic. >> anchor: and that was sarah rosario reporting live from daytona beach. this is video from saint augustine.

to evacuate. alex deprado here with more on that. >> reporter: officials urged people in northern florida to evacuate. some have stayed. storm surge in hurricanes is usually the biggest killer. >> how many kids are in there? 20. >> reporter: in saint augustine 20 adults and children are surrounded by water at an inn. the grp >> we have been in contact with them. they told us they don't wish to have any assistance. at this point in time none of our first responders are going out in the storm. >> reporter: other parts of the coastal city have been inundated with water. storm surge is a major concern in palm coast near jacksonville sea water is pushed up against homes. glass doors the only thing

in daytona beach the high winds blew part of a roof off a building. those winds pushing water over a sea wall at the hilton resort. nearby storm surge has gone over the beach and into the bathroom. officials say it is the biggest killer. >> we tend to talk about wind and the power outages. it is about the damaging and life threatening storm surge that we're going to see in the >> reporter: only once the storm passes and the water recedes will emergency crews respond to calls. right now they say it is simply too dangerous. alex deprado 7 news. >> anchor: the eye wall came dangerously close to the city of jacksonville. >> anchor: the stores took a beating as matthew closed in and moved in. in savannah georgia with more on the conditions there. scott. >> reporter: good evening.

it won't come until the early hours. we are starting to get a sense of what hurricane matthew can do. this is the water front area in savannah. it's getting dark. it's hard to see. you see the wind whipping up. the water cascading down toward the river. things here if there's anything working for savannah the tide is actually going down. what's working against it the high tide will come around 2:00 this morning. that's when hurricane is expected to get closer. most people in this area have left for obvious reasons. they've been told to evacuate. 75% of those people have heeded those warnings. i've run into a dozen people here saying they're going to hunker down and ride out this storm. >> anchor: i hope everyone is safe there. >> anchor: starting to move closer to georgia.

storm. going top hit south carolina after that i'm sorry. >> reporter: georgia right now. it's moving northeast northeast of jacksonville florida. there's the eye. thankfully the eye wall which contains the strongest winds off shore. we had concerns that the eye wall would ride up interstate 95. with that a lot of wind and rain. in saint augustine they're out of the rain shield. jacksonville not far out of the tropical moisture into georgia as well as south carolina. and the storm surge is the real concern moving forward. the storm is going to weaken. there is the wind concern and a heavy rain fall concern. the storm surge jacksonville north, brunswick, savannah, north of charleston 4 to 6'. what is storm surge? when you have the hurricane moving over the water generating

the sea level surface up. as that risen sea level surface approaches the coastline it inundates the coastline. the wave action from the strong winds also continues to pile water from the shoreline inland. after that the storm looks like it is just off shore from myrtle beach south carolina east of wilmington north carolina. this loop around advertised to this is not a 1, 2 punch. by the time is gets back to the bahamas will have winds to 15 miles an hour. >> anchor: download the latest from the 7 news mobile app. >> anchor: more news today. police in orange are on the hunt for murder suspects. an elderly man murdered in his home. his wife badly injured.

>> reporter: moving north at 12 miles per hour. saint augustine in the clear. jacksonville is next to clear out of the storm. we focus our attention farther north up into georgia. brunswick georgia, savannah, bew fort south carolina, charleston south carolina. as the rain continues to work in. flood warnings in effect for several hours. not only because of the rain but the coastal flooding. the storm surge which we talked about the newscast. here's the rain fall forecast. when you get several miles inland anticipate inland flooding. a nasty situation for the folks down there across georgia south carolina and portions of north carolina. here in new england low 60s now. the city at 63. what a delightful fall day with mostly clear skies. a larger view here.

of the hurricane up through virginia and pennsylvania. at the same time we have a cool front sliding east over the great lake states. what will happen over the weekend as the cool front moves east it will grab moisture from pennsylvania and you could make the case that some of that moisture is from matthew. you'd lose the argument if you said matue is heading our way. it's not. we will anticipate clouds to show up tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow is not today. the daylight hours tomorrow are dry. showers coming at us tomorrow night. i thought the cool front would keep on moving on sunday. that doesn't happen. it slows down. there's going to be scattered showers and on and off light rain the closer to the front you are. back through the medad nocregion you're far from the front.
