dramatic shoot out. >> anchor: the 2 police officers were responding to a domestic disturbance when they arrived on gladstone street. a man started shooting at officers. >> anchor: the man identified as 33-year-old kirk figgeroa. he was arguing with a roommate over the thermostat when he grabbed a large knife. >> anchor: the 2 police officers who confronted the shooter. tonight they are from the latest on the 2 officers injured to what we know about the shooter we have team 7 coverage. live in easty with the latest tonight. >> reporter: adam, the district attorney calling what happened a ferocious fire fight. the crime scene remains sealed off tonight. residents are still rattled by what they saw and what they heard. sounds of gun fire filling the street.

scene out of a movo gladstone street in east boston last night. >> i need every officer available to make their way. >> reporter: responding to a domestic violence call. officers entering the house are shot by 33-year-old kirk figgeroa who is armed with an assault rifle and wearing a bullet proof vest. >> you only see this on cops sh >> reporter: veteran boston police officer centolo and morris are dragged to safety by officers who found themselves in a fight with figgeroa who was shot and killed by police. the critically wounded officers are rushed to mass general with multiple gun shots. >> obviously anyone who would shoot one of our officers is an unhinged person. >> reporter: with state police

residents were to shelter in place overnight after the all clear this morning. >> i was really scared. i didn't know what to expect. i wanted to get off the street. i didn't know what was going to happen. >> reporter: figgeroa's ford crown victoria that resembles a police cruiser is towed from the crime scene for processing. has no criminal record here in massachusetts. outside the state the police he's been charged with impersonating a police officer. the district attorney who praised police for bravery in the fire fight said his office launched an independent investigation now. something they always do in officer involved shootings. >> it is important for me to stress my role here conduct and lead an independent investigation into the use of

expected to get into the crime scene. processing everything there and trying to figure out why figgeroa began firing at police here in the first place. steve cooper 7 news. >> anchor: tonight the east boston community holding a vigil. >> anchor: for the latest on the emotional evening. here's 7's kimberly bookman in east boston for us. kimberly. >> reporter: adam, those 2 local officers that were hurt boston. they were well known and liked in this community and also by their force. and they brought dozens of people in the community to gather so they could pray for these officer's recovery. not just that but to pray for the other officers who continue to serve and protect. and to pray for healing for those traumatized by these

boston's mayor and the suffolk county da applauded for their leadership. there were tears out here. including from the captain in east boston who says the last day has been incredibly difficult at this precinct. >> yeah, there's not words, not words for what these guys do every day let alone last night. get it done support them. and get them back. t make sure they're safe. make sure the families are good. get back to work. >> reporter: all day long different people have been stopping by. food, cards and came in to say thank you and know that they're supported. they've appreciated all of that. reporting live from east boston kimberly bookman 7 news. >> anchor: what a night of chaos. one man describing the situation

amaka ubaka live in that neighborhood to tell us more about that account. amaka. >> reporter: adam, neighbors were terrified not knowing exactly what was happening late last night. some of them ducking for cover inside their own homes. part of this street is still blocked off. officers guarding the home where this happened. neighbor say they saw the suspect around but never imagined he would go after 2 officers. home video from a neighbor as where 2 officers were shot. >> unbelievable to tell you the truth. something like that happen in the neighborhood. >> everything unfold with the rolling the cops in the ambulances and the cops down the street. i've never seen anything like that before. >> reporter: all day long police have continued to process the scene while talking to neighbors by kirk figgeroa the constable

officers. >> reporter: bob ryan says both officers were friends who would come into their restaurant. >> so why would he do this to them. i don't know. >> reporter: neighbors say figgeroa's car did stand out. >> want to be cop car. it had constable all over it. >> reporter: neighbors are still shocked that a shooting of this magnitude could happen in their community. >> it's a sc you hear a law enforcement official trying to respond to a call and they walk into someone that you're describing -- >> reporter: now one neighbor did describe the suspect as a wanna be cop. she also said he was a pretty mean guy. amaka ubaka 7 news. >> advise use caution. it's still shots fired. >> i think we have an officer down.

started coming in moment after the shoot out. brave first responders pulling those officers to safety. officers remain in critical condition. >> anchor: we are learning more about those tense moments. get to jonathan hall with more from mgh. >> reporter: as he worked the crime scene overnight in boston the suffolk county da saw the blood and shell casings. >> there is no qu many of the officers involved acted heroically. put themselves in harm's way to confront a deadly gam gunman and also to protect 2 brother officers that had fallen. in our great city that these officers you know got the kind of care that they needed at mass general. >> reporter: top cops including

mass general. when he visited with the families he spoke to one of the doctors who treated his men. >> he said you're very fortunate that saint michael was looking down on these 2 officers. >> reporter: the wounded officers identified as matt morris and richard centolo. morris suffered the more serious wound. >> officer morse was hit into one of the leg. doctors later say saved his life. >> in boston this is another example of our police officers doing the right thing and doing their job. >> reporter: the union representing the boston police and the top brass of the police are thankful that a blood transfusion was available to help officer morris. work with the red cross to make sure the word is out that more blood donations are necessary.

a fellow officer helped to keep one of the injured officers alive. for that here's 7's john cocoa. >> he knows how close he was to death. >> reporter: in the middle of a violent night the swift action of one boston police officer likely keeping one of his brothers in blue arrive. kirk figgeroa opened fire on him severing one of his main arteries. officer centolo was also hit. >> officers were quick to put hands as well as apply a turn cut which doctors say saved his life. >> reporter: they're used to control blood flow from a traumatic injury. a boston police officer tied a tourniquet to his own leg when he was shot in dorchester.

training this thursday with a tactical s.w.a.t. team. >> you talk about a coincidence paying off. this officer was there to apply the pressure to apply the tourniquet. an artery was severed and thank god we were able to save the officer. >> reporter: he briefly spoke with officer morris who was able to gather the strength to thank this unnamed hero. >> he clearly praised the offi >> reporter: if not for that officer using a tourniquet there's a good chance officer morris wouldn't be recovering from in the hospital. >> anchor: 7's dan hausle continues our team 7 coverage. >> reporter: this is the picture of kirk figgeroa posted on the website for code blue protection services.

offering services from bell running to armored car training. figgeroa was sworn in as a boston city constable. able to serve legal papers wear a constable badge and in some cases make arrest. but boston's police commissioner says they never knew what we found out that figgeroa was arrested in georgia in 2009 for impersonating a private investigator. behind bars and released on time served. >> nothing here. nothing that would prohibit us from issuing him a constable license here. we didn't have the legal right to check on a constable license. because again that only serves civil process. he did have a record. from what i understand nothing in massachusetts. >> reporter: figgeroa's bio says

and worked as a private investigator in florida and a prison guard in west virginia. found figgeroa application was denied. records show figgeroa did have gun licenses in florida at various times. they expired in 2009 and february of this year. we found figgeroa was a prison guard only for a week and then he quit. he was in the reserves not for 8 a hardship discharge before going to basic training. >> anchor: moments before last night's shoot out coming into question. >> anchor: and there's a lot to get to there. here's cheryl fiandaca with more. >> reporter: knives guns and a video about the coran. all of that and more posted on

the man who police say shot 2 police officers. describing himself as a musician rapper. adding to the confusion figgeroa is a want to be police officer who posted 16 videos of police involved shootings of black men. >> that looks like a bad dude too. >> i don't think it was sort of an issue where the officers were drawn to the scene officers. i think it was what it always is a domestic call that is always unpredictable. >> reporter: along weapon comments like hail satan, hail lucifer. and along side those postings photos of kim kardashian, kanye west, and beyonce. all of which paint a complicated picture of who kirk figgeroa was and what led to the shooting of
