collecting evidence. while members of the community joined with police officers in an emotional vigil. >> let us pray. >> reporter: at the east boston precinct. prayers for their full recovery. >> he is a good man. >> just trying to make a living. >> when you shoot at our officers, you are shooting at our community. >> yeah. there is not words. no words for what these guys do every day. >> reporter: just before 11:00 wednesday night, a man inside this home on gladstone street in east boston exchanged gunfire. police were called to the address for reports of two roommates arguing over the thermostat. and one claimed the other pulled a knife. police commissioner william evans said when the officers went inside, 33-year-old kirk figueroa who was wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire. >> he quickly displayed a rifle and without provocation, basically, omd fire on our two

officers matt morris and richard cintolo were shot multiple times before they were rescued by fellow officers. figueroa was shot and killed by police. he was sworn in as a constable in boston in july. he wasn't licensed to carry a gun. he didn't have a criminal record in massachusetts. but he has been charged outside the state with impersonating a police officer. his black ford crown vic that resembles a police cruiser was towed from the scene yesterday morning. a search warrant to enter the home last night. to try to figure out why figueroa would open fire, shooting two officers who are now on the minds of so many. and commissioner evans visited with the two officers. the two injured officers earlier this morning. both still livesed in critical but stable condition. and both going back in for surgery today. commissioner evans thanks everyone for their continued prayers.

east boston, i'm byron barnett, 7 news. >> christa: all right, byron. thank you. today we are learning so much more about the lives, the background of these two men. let's head live to mass. general with victoria warren. vicky? >> reporter: both veteran police officers, christa. as byron just mentioned, they both have surgery scheduled yet again today. the boston police commissioner was here again at mass. general hospital visiting with these officers. encouraged at the brogue that they are making. that they have a long way to go to recovery. gunshot after gunshot, and at mass. general hospital, two critically wounded police officers know their survival is nothing short of fast miracle. >> he knows how close he was to death. his father knew how close he was to death. >> reporter: a 12-year veteran officer matt morris speaking from his hospital bedside, thanking the officer who put his hands into a bullet wound

severed artery and applied a life-saving tourniquet. morris who once received a bravery award was shot three times. the officer who applied that tourniquet literally was just trained on using it last week. >> you talk about a coincidence. really paying off for us. this officer was there to apply the pressure, to apply the tourniquet. >> reporter: in a nearby icu room, doctors worked on officer richard cintolo. he was shot four times. the 2 well-known and well-liked. >> i work with his dad. he has a brother on the job. you know, they have a big police family. they are recovering. which is really good news. >> reporter: and again, surgeries again today. for those two officers. the commissioner says that he has heard from people repeatedly asked him what they can do to help.

hail lucifer." the commissioner doesn't believe his officers were targeted. >> i don't think it was sort of an issue where the officers were drawn to the scene with the sole purpose of attacking the officers. no. i think think f it was a domestic call that is always unpredictable. >> reporter: boston police say in massachusetts, figueroa had no criminal history. now we are learning that in 2009, he was arrested in georgia for impersonating a privatees for possibly setting a car on fire. 7 news also learned about figueroa's violent past. in divorce papers filed in georgia last year, his ex-wife alleges figueroa "gave me black eyes, choked me, pulled my hair out, verbally humiliated me and abupzed me on several different occasions." investigators now trying to piece it all together. >> we have a general understanding of what happened. but in several months from now, we will have a full and better

so danielle, it seems like a typical fall day out there. >> danielle: yeah. it really is. quite a bit cooler today than yesterday. we have that wind. that is why it is feeling a little chilly out there. the sunshine is back, though. yesterday, we got all the way into the low 70's. so today, going to be quite a bit cooler. but much more of a typical fall day. current temperatures outside in the mid-50's. so probably need the sweater for today. the winds are back. they are out of the north. that is the reason we are starting to see some of the cooler air in highs today in the upper 50's. a breezy day. a cooler day. no shortage of sunshine. tomorrow, temperatures in the low 6's. so the weekend forecast really looking great. no rain. we are dry through the weekend. we could see some rain sunday night into monday. but just a 30% chance. we are not going to worry about that. temperature trend through the weekend, look at sunday. temperatures near 70. then heading into next week, above average, too. we will take a full look at

>> nancy: two murder suspects called to court in orange. 23-year-old joshua hart and 27-year-old brittany smith facing murder, home invasion, and robbery charges. the suspects were arrested in virginia earlier this week and brought back to massachusetts on wednesday. hart and smith are accused of murdering a 95-year-old thomas hardy and seriously injuring his wife, 77-year-old joanna fisher in a home invasion last week. the suspects broke into the couple's home and stole their car which was found in virginia over the weekend. >> christa: a woman who police say encouraged her boyfriend to commit suicide with text messages is back in court today. michelle carter's boyfriend conrad roy committed suicide at the age of 18. carter was 17 at the time. her attorney argued that statements she made to investigators should be thrown out, saying that carter was not fully aware of her constitutional rights at the time. >> nancy: now to our election countdown. just 25 days left in the campaign. donald trump on the attack. seriously denying allegations
