12:03 pm
>> go get a coffee, stand around and wait. see if we can get any information. that is about it. >> reporter: frustrating for those workers who are still out of their buildings right now. again, they reopened this stretch right here. you can see the crews are still working at this hour. we are told they will be here for several more hours. vn after they repair that gas main. they still have to go in the building. and make sure all the gas levels are okay. that is something that will take a couple more hours. we are live in downtown boston this afternoon, steveoo >> sarah: we are following more breaking news at noon. a school bus driver in quincy has been cited after his bus went off the road and hit a house. this happened last week. the crash happened last tuesday on cory street. right near the intersection of kitter street. several children were taken to the hospital. they are all doing okay. police say the driver is being cited for negligence... negligent operation and marked lane violations. he could face several fines as

12:07 pm
accident involving a fire truck. looks like a fire engine as opposed to a ladder truck. involved in this crash. this is commonwealth avenue and dartmouth street. as you can see there, quite a bit of damage to the front end of that small maroon-colored car. it looks like some kind of chain reaction. unclear what the circumstances were surrounding this, whether there was a car that failed to yield to the fire truck or not. we are not exactly sure. as you see here, we are sky 7 hopefully, we can get a bet every... better sense of what exactly happened. commonwealth avenue and dartmouth street. maybe once we fly over this billing, we can get a better vantage point to see what happened here. >> this is a live look from sky 7 hd. you see the red vehicle off on the sidewalk. the front of it completely smashed in. again, it looks like something happened between this red s.u.v. and the fire truck which then veered off right on
12:08 pm
and from the video we saw earlier, i mean, there are multiple cars. all these cars lined up along the street there. it look like it hit this car on the end. i mean, maybe even, like, ten cars have hit one another down this line. >> christa: if we go back to the sky 7 shot. you can see, it looks like maybe a bmw s.u.v. or something like that that is right directly in front of this fire engine. and then several cars, as you were mentioning, they are kind of obscured by the tree there. looks like several others, perhaps maybe even parked right there. when this car plowed into it. as you mentioned, it looks like the fire engine came right up... or at least the car, right up on to the sidewalk. that could have been a potentially really dangerous situation for any pedestrians in that area. >> sarah: yeah. again, this happened a short time ago at commonwealth avenue and dartmouth streets. and again, it looks like that red vehicle and that fire truck may be... maybe crashed there. that red vehicle is up on the
12:09 pm
completely smashed in. and again, all these other cars which looks like multiple, maybe even ten of them, as the fire truck veered up on that sidewalk, hitting the back end of that car and then hitting multiple vehicles. but again, all of these appear to be, like, they were just parked on the side of the road there. >> christa: right. we are getting word from the newsroom here that this is engine 7 involved in this pretty bad accident here. ag point. obviously, hoping for the best. hoping that no one was severely injured in this crash. but it does look pretty bad there. you see fire officials at the scene there. clearly, an investigation is going to unfold to find out exactly what happened here. but we haven't seen anybody taken away in an ambulance at this point. it doesn't mean that no one has. what we have seen... so far, we haven't seen any of. that obviously, we have crews
12:10 pm
like a pole was down there. it is kind of hard to tell with the debris and leaves in the street as well. >> sarah: yeah. hard to tell from this angle. again, as we said earlier, this happened a short time ago. at commonwealth avenue and dartmouth street. a boston fire truck involved in this accident in the back bay. you can clearly see two cars were involved. maybe this fire truck and this red skreek. the front end of it smashed. that went up on the sidewalk there. but again, i mean, multiple vehicles in front of the fire truck twe looked like they were hit. just causing a multiple car collision with parked cars as that fire truck ran up on to the sidewalk there. to the left of the screen there, that is the red vehicle. the front smashed in. that is kind of on the opposite end up on the sidewalk. away from all of these parked cars here. >> christa: and in a small car like that, you have to think m.s. maybe somebody was injured with. that again, we don't know.
12:11 pm
we do know this is engine 7. if you do a quick check here, that is located at 200 columbus avenue in boston. engine 7, ladder 17. again, this is in the back bay. this has been a very busy day for firefighters. in the city of boston. earlier, we had a gas leak. pretty serious situation. with many people evacuated. not too far from here in the government center area. near tremont street. now we have this situation unfolding once again at commonwealth avenue and dartmouth street. it does it looks like things have pretty much ground to a halt there. best advice, if you are in and around boston, to avoid that area if you can. >> sarah: a lot of people posting pictures on twitter right now. it looks like that fire truck that veered up on the sidewalk there, may have even taken down some trees. and hit some trees there. a bmw is right in front of it. it is kind of unclear if that bmw was parked or if they hit the back of it. multiple cars that were parked
12:12 pm
just one right after the other. fire truck up on the sidewalk, really kind of... its front wheels look like they are a little offer the ground. based on these pictures on twitter right now. a really messy scene there. there are ambulances there. another red s.u.v. vehicle on the opposite end of the sidewalk. with this front end just completely smashed in. again, this is just happening a short time ago at commonwealth avenue and dartmouth street. this video, we are just getting into our newsroom. we are no word yet on injuries or amount of injuries. >> christa: you have to think there must be some with a crash of that nature. it just looks pretty bad there. so what a strange day. when you think about it. for firefighters. here in boston. with two, you know, major incidents untolling. not too far away from one another. what really strikes me is just how far up, it looks like on
12:13 pm
>> sarah: yeah. we are dealing with the gas pipeline issue. >> christa: yeah. that's right. >> sarah: in government sent they are morning. which caused a lot of people to be delayed. now we have this issue. i don't know... we don't know if that fire truck was heading somewhere. if its lights were on or what. you can clearly see a mess with all the debroo there. like i said earlier, it looks like the front two wheels are up from some pictures that we are seeing on twitter. of these trees there in the back bay. again, this happening at commonwealth avenue and dartmouth street. you can see police do have some police tape there. have part of the area blocked off. but there are numerous cars. i mean, this looks like maybe even ten cars from this fire truck veering off to the side of the road. slamming into the back of the bmw that is in front of it. then just resulting in a multiple collision just hitting numerous cars in front of it.
12:14 pm
with the front end completely smashed in. there is numerous ambulances there. and police, obviously, are on scene as well. >> christa: yeah. you were mentionings, sarah, it is hard to say. it looks like maybe... did a tree come down or something like that? >> it is hard to tell from here. pictures on twitter, it does look like some trees were knocked over. >> christa: the force of the collision, too. if, in fact, this truck was racing to a s of speeds that might have been involved here. and you know, potentially, you know, running into some... you know, a vehicle that is not moving. and the impact of that crash, it just is a miracle that no one on the sidewalk was hurt. but again, we don't know about the sheer number of injuries or who sustained them at this point. you have to think there might have been some. and this is a well-traveled area. a lot of pedestrians out. a beautiful day.
12:15 pm
this kind of thing happens. a freak accident. right? >> sarah: right. we are seeing from people on twitter, witnesses that are on the scene, saying about ten parked cars. that is what it looks like to me when i looked at that video earlier. also, some people that were on scene there, saying some firefighters were also taken by ambulance to the hospital. no word yet on their condition or injuries. you see that red vehicle that swerved up on the top of the sidewalk there. completely smashed in in t i believe that is that bmw that the fire truck hit, causing that collision with what we are hearing. from withins on scene, ten parked cars. all with damage from this collision right now. >> christa: right. this is not far... let's see. once again, this is commonwealth avenue and dartmouth street. sarah, you were mentioning potential injuries. at this point. we are working to confirm that. of course, if you are just joining us, the live news that

sidewalk here. there is a second vehicle in front of. that as you heard, multiple vehicles were involved. a tree knocked over here. sort of securing the area right now. there are two different things going on. boston firefighters here on the scene. you also have boston police as well dealing with the investigation itself. >> christa: all right. and steve, any word whether this engine was on its way to a call or some kind of emergency when this happened? do we not know yet? i mean, i'm looking right now. the lights on the engine not activated. so perhaps that indicates that maybe they were not heading to a call. but again, that is what we are seeing right now. but that could be maybe the system had shut down after the accident. it is hard to know. again, there are a lot of people trying to put this all together right now. and also to keep people back from the scene as you can imagine. >> christa: what is unclear is exactly how to happened. we don't know whether the

maybe swerved to avoid that s.u.v. really unclear at this point. steve, you mentioned there is actually a tree down. can you guesstimate... i mean, how far up on to the sidewalk this engine went? because that looks pretty scary. >> right. well, i'm standing... i'm probably 15 feet from the engine itself here. and the actual engine is up... the front wheels are off of the sidewalk. and it's blocking the whole sidewalk here. you know, the sidewalks here along commonwealth avenue are ten feet wide. t and it's come to rest here. it is in the air. i'm looking right now. okay. sorry about. that they want us to back up a little bit. the front wheels right now. they are probably a foot and a half off of the sidewalk. and again, with the tree sort of shimmied up off the back

12:36 pm
yes. temperatures averaging in the low's this afternoon. sliding ever so slightly back into the upper 40's by 5:00 p.m. then by 7:00 p.m., you are down to 42 degrees. clear skies and lighter winds this evening. allowing those temperatures to fall off fairly quickly through the evening into the overnight hours. and bottoming off into the 20's and lower 0's for many of the suburbs.
12:37 pm
12:38 pm
>> sarah: we continue to follow this breaking news. we will send it live to the back bay with a press conference now on this breaking news. >> they are working at the scene right now. that, i don't know. i'm assuming yes. but i don't know that. >> can we back up and briefly go through the set of sics again? >> so it was an alarm that
12:39 pm
one of the workers at the building set the alarm off. they were doing some work. engine 7 got the call for the fire. the alarm. and they were responding to the alarm. they were copping through the intersection. when the accident occurred. >> reporter: and did the person go through a red light? you are not sure? >> again, there is video that should be on the camera. witnesses have made the assumption that the driver, the light change, the driver kind of went out into the intersection and with the apparatus. >> depending on... could that driver be cited? >> it is under investigation. that is all speculation. it doesn't appear that anyone is really in the wrong here. i don't want to mislead anybody. it doesn't appear that way. and again, just thankfully no, one was injured. seriously injured. the four firefighters being treated and so is the driver of the vehicle. >> has this happened before? >> we have had accidents. certainly, we have had accidents.
12:40 pm
significant accident like. this usually, our accidents are very small. when apparatus squeezing through to get into a different street or parked cars and they will clip something. that is typically... we call them squeeze-through accidents. nothing of this significance, though. >> what is happening right now? what happens this afternoon if? >> well, we preserving the scene. the accident reconstruction team can do their part. take videos and pictures. once that is all set, we will be vehicles that are damaged. >> how heavy is that truck? >> i would be speculating. probably 30 tons, maybe. >> a chain reaction is pretty amaying. >> i think there is, like, nine cars involved. reporth how is the other driver doing? >> again, non-life-threatening. very minor, from what i'm told. >> this is obviously,... boston is congested. this is a high-traffic area.
12:41 pm
