the new year rang in with little to celebrate for the iowa hawkeyes and their fans. a crowd of more than 94 thousand packed the rose bowl stadium yesterday...with most wearing black and gold. iowa looked ready for the moment, but the hawks weren't prepared for stanford's christian mccaffrey. the heisman trophy finalist torched the hawks for a rose bowl record 368 yards. stanford led 35-nothing at the half. iowa made it look closer than it was. the final, 45-16, and no roses

disappointed fans say the blowout loss seemed to be a little easier to swallow than a loss that came down to the final minutes, like the big ten championship game. andy fales caught up with hawk fans

hawk fans did take issue with the cardinal's marching band. stanford came under fire for mocking iowa during the rose bowl halftime show. during their performance, the band played the "farmer's only jingle" and members ran a giant cow across the field. iowa fans responded by booing them off the field. this isn't the first time the stanford band has caused controversy. back in may, the university banned the group from road games for a year after an investigation

including hazing and sexual assault. des moines police responded to an early morning shots fired call. witnesses told officers they saw an armed man walking down 11th street and jefferson around 10-30 p-m. then, they heard him fire off a few rounds in the air. once on scene, police found four shell casings in the area, but no suspect or gun. no one was hurt and there are no reports of property damage. police arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with thursday's shooting in des moines. the teenager is accused of shooting another 15 year old at this home in the 13-hundred block of east 14th street. the victim was shot in the chest and remains in the hospital, but he is expected to survive. police have not named the 15 year old suspect who is now charged with felony reckless use of a firearm. two weeks have passed since searchers found sam kemp's body in a pond in granger. family members reported the 17 year old missing several days

home from a party. channel 13's mike da silva spoke to kemp's best friend who was likely the last to see him alive... 18 year-old trishay thompson says he and his now late best friend sammy kemp were partying hard that night. how hard? 17:08:15 'from a scale to 1 to 10, 10.' 17:08:32--36 'marijuana, good marijuana, and vodka.' when the cops arrived and broke the party up, some 300 kids took off running. 17:08:59 'did you run with sam? 17:09:00 'he was right behind me.' 17:09:07--09 'he was right by me, i told him to stay right by me.' so how did the two separate? 17:09:31--37 'i turned around and he was like running along with me. and then i told him that he needed to hurry up' thompson recalls the first moment he realized kemp wasn't with him anymore. 17:09:43--50 'as soon as we got to the parking lot, i turned around because i had almost got there. i started calling his name.' 17:09:52 'sammy? you know? he wasnt answering. so

or injury. kemp drowned and his death was ruled an accident. his autopsy also noted alcohol and marijuana intoxication. a fort dodge six-year-old... who died following a car accident on christmas day... will be laid to rest later this morning. payton henry was hurt in a head-on collision near fort dodge. she died the next day. services for the little girl are set for eleven this morning at foster funeral home in webster city. payton's parents and two other children injured in the crash are now recovering at home. johnston's mayor is making good on a bet of sorts. last month...paula dierenfeld promised to run a mile for every bag of food or personal items donated to the johnston partnership. people stepped up and donated 187 bags... now, it's the mayor's turn.. dierenfeld ran the first leg... a half marathon. that's 13-miles down... and a lot to go. the city is still tallying donations. dierenfeld is an avid runner and

republican candidate mike huckabee isn't wasting any time.. he begins a six day swing across the state in winterset this morning. he's also campaigning in indianola, pella and newton. democrat martin o'malley is also in iowa today. he's hosting a meet and greet at the west des moines public library at 12 - 15... before heading to western iowa. . the president is looking ahead to 20-16 and working on unfinished business, particularly when it comes to gun violence. "we know that we can't stop every act of violence. but what if we tried to stop even one? what if congress did something anything to protect our kids from gun violence?" president obama says he'll meet with the attorney general next week to discuss options to help reduce gun violence. the plan would include expanding background hecks on gun sales. in his address, the president asks everyone to join him in the fight,... saying it's going to take all of us to make america safer for our children. a new texas law makes it legal

supporters turned out at the texas state capitol yesterday to celebrate the new open carry law. it allows concealed handgun license holders to carry visible, holstered handguns. the exceptions include schools and college campuses. businesses can ban open carry as long as they display the proper signs. widespread winter flooding has left hundreds of people in the midwest homeless in the new year. millions remain at risk in the flood zone, where at dozens have died, and others are still missing. miguel almaguer has the latest from flood ravaged missouri. even though the water levels' dropping, there are still a lot of dangers out here. danger ... and damage. the brunt of it centered outside st. louis ... where small communities have lost big. some 150 families ... in arnold,

city held its traditional new year's day rose parade yesterday kareen wynter gives us a look at the larger than life floats. they rang in 2016 with a bang. this year's tournament of roses parade in pasadena was once again a new year's day extravaganza. as marching bands kept the crowds moving in the cold weather, spectacular parade floats decked out in the most extraordinary designs wowed onlookers.... especially those along the packed colorado boulevard who camped out for days just to secure their spot. this iowa family visiting from out of town to cheer on their team in the iowa hawkeyes stanford cardinal rose bowl matchup said there's nothing like having a front-row seat to all the action.
