a des moines man charged in a deadly high speed crash takes the stand in his own defense. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm erin kiernan. and i'm dan winters. 24 year old troy mure is accused of vehicular homicide. he admits to driving a car that hit a telephone pole at more than 80 miles per hour.. his passenger, 22 year old scalicity boyd, was killed last november. on the stand today, mure said there's a reason why he was going so fast. 11:24:15 did you feel that your life in danger when you saw that gun? yes i did. mine and hers 21 the 24 year old testified that another driver started chasing them down 35th street. mure says in the days leading up to the crash, he had received death threats over rumors that he was involved in a fatal shooting at a nightclub earlier that month. this afternoon, prosecutors questioned his account of what happened right before the

11:31:10 no one was hanging out the window firing at you, correct? correct. if fact there's no evidence that anyone fired a shot at you correct? correct. testimony concluded today. a judge will now determine mure's guilt or innocence. emily fazino's mother testified today in fazino's husband's murder trial. alex fazzino is accused of killing emily in their home in 20-12. the defense wants to prove she accidentally drowned in a bathtub... the result of a prescription drug addiction. they claim emily's mother tried to hide the problem... by letting emily be treated at her childhood home, instead of in a professional setting. that's not the way her mother sees it. we felt like we had been successful. she came down and ate with us, socialized with us. and so that's why i didn't think of putting her into an out-patient or in-patient, and it was not her desire. it was not my choice. that's how she wanted to handle it. testimony will likely last through the week, with closing

monday. police are still searching for two escaped inmates from the newton correctional facility... michael amodeo and jessy foley a routine count on saturday. both men were serving sentences for drug related crimes. another inmate escaped a little captured. anyone with information is asked to call police. we have a sobering reminder trains... and now investigators are trying to determine why a truck drove into its path. this is what's left of the truck. it was hit while crossing tracks in sioux city. luckily, there were no injuries. however, the dry feed it was carrying was spilled all over the area. crews spent hours cleaning it up and making sure it wouldn't hurt the environment. two people are recovering after their cedar rapids apartment building went up in flames... firefighters were called to the apartment on the city's southwest side early this morning. they were quickly able to knock down the fire... the residents were treated for smoke inhalation. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. carbon monoxide alarms would be required in iowa's apartments

apartments would be regularly inspected, while homeowners would be on the honor system. leaders say they want to make the alarms as common as smoke detectors in the state. the bill is awaiting approval in the house. about three hundred iowans are treated for carbon monoxide poisoning every year. today, lawmakers heard about a bill that would help provide oversight to the state's transition to privatized medicaid system... channel 13's stephanie moore joins us with the details. the bill was introduced by the chair of the human resources committee but has bi-partisian support---the goal to provide improvements and more accountability for iowa's move to medicaid privatization... democratic senator amanda ragan, who introduced the bill, says the legislation is designed to safeguard the more than half a million iowans who use medicaid, encourage participation and protect tax payers. governor branstad's plan to privatize medicaid is set to take effect april first....the federal government's already pushed that

says the bill has six goals to accomplish oversight including creating a medicaid reinvestment fund and expanding the medical assistance advisory council.... 'our job is to protect the health care safety net for iowa families. we are all one accident or illness away from depending on medicaid.iowas health care safety net is simply too important to turn over to out-of-state corporations' before the bill could be debated it was deferred. the senate majority leader said republicans are considering some amendments to the bill and the plan is to take it back up tomorrow. the blank park zoo is investing some dollars in the animal kingdom. it's planning to build a nearly two million dollar expansion of the giraffe barn. it will be big enough to hold ten giraffes, six more than the zoo's current herd... it will also allow them more face time with the visitors... the public will be able to visit

ni the meantime, the fight over scalia's replacement continues... and an iowa senator has found himself right in the middle of it. chuck grassley discussed the vacancy with the president and other top senators... it was an attempt to bridge a standoff over whether president obama should send a nomination to the senate. but grassley says he won't consider a nominee until after the presidential election. i spoke for the position of 52 of the 54 republicans that the people should have a voice in this through the next election. grassley chairs the judiciary committee. majority leader mitch mcconnell and democratic leader harry reid also took part in the meeting. we're nearing the end of one of the biggest days on the election calender... today is an enormously important day. super tuesday i believe is the

twelve states choose candidates today - ten where both parties compete, plus the democrats in colorado and the republicans in alaska. the latest polls show donald trump and hillary clinton hold commanding leads. and it appears clinton is eager to take trump on... at some point you can't just say whatever pops into your head if you want to be the president of the united states of america. polls in alabama, georgia, vermont, and virginia close in a little less than an hour. alaska's caucuses should end around eleven. some people would rather work in the kitchen instead of the oval office. and the "iowa restaurant association" is looking for them. today, it held events at the iowa events center to match employers with potential employees. one of them was a cooking competition.. similar to the "top chef" t-v show. officials expect an increase of 16 hundred culinary jobs in iowa this year. snowfall totals were in the 2 to 4" range from fort dodge into ne iowa

"smudge" somehow dialed 9-1-1 last week from the ames pet hospital. the responding officers made him

unless there's an emergency. but smudge didn't get off without any punishment - he got the classic front and profile mug shots. his paw prints were also taken. police are now encouraging the public to talk with their animals about the appropriate use of 9-1-1.
