"star man" and the iconic ziggy stardust album confirmed his genius above all for innovation and change. he created, sang and acted for six decades, moving across genres, pop rock, soul. fame bringing him his first number one co-written with john lennon. but then he had the world dancing. dancing in chicago

been said that david bowie was always changing like a chameleon. he wasn't a chameleon because a chameleon changes to blend in. david bowie never blended in. he was perhaps summed up by his song "rebel rebel." i bought his first album when i was a 12. i was a huge fan and like all these fans i'll miss him. savannah. >> i feel the same way, bill. thank you so much for your story. let's turn to joe lev, a contributing editor of "rolling stone" and incoming on spotify. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> first of all, was it well known that he had this struggle with cancer because i have to say the news came as such a shock to me and i think so much of us. >> yes. this was not known at all. this was a private matter and it's interesting. the album, it would have been reviewed so differently just last friday on his birthday when "black star," his latest record, was released. people would have received it so differently if they had known of his illness.

and faces down the question of mortality, but the decision to keep all of this private allowed the art to come out, to be evaluated and to speak for itself. >> well, let's talk about this art. i mean, it is hard to overstate his contribution to music, to fashion, to culture. what did david bowie do for this world? >> well, quite simply he was one of rock's first self-conscious artists. he looked at everything he did as art, the way he dressed, the way he lived his life, his sexuality. he pushed boundaries all the time, and uniquely he was an inspiration to people in the '70s, in the '80s, in the '90s constantly changes. "changes" is one of his best known songs. it's a theme song for him, that idea of shifting, of constantly being on the move and embracing all sorts of different sounds, rock 'n' roll, dance music, noise, all these things.
7:07 am
>> well, i was going to say one measure of somebody's success and impact is how young artists and new artists have taken what he did and taken it further. are there people out there in music today or even in the last few decades who you say, oh, david bowie did that first? >> yes. you're tempted to say everyone, but if you look at say lady gaga's first record, you look at this record where she is self-consciously mimicking david bowie's looks, his iconography, the way he dressed because she herself wanted to say right from the start i'm going to be a shape shifter. nirvana covered a david bowie song in a final performance in an mtv live performance. kanye west tweet that had david bowie was an inspiration to him and, of course works we have madonna, another artist whose career is about fame, celebrity and shape-shifting. without david bow toe blaze a trail for her, probably not. >> the in the few seconds i have

new record, the song "lazarus" released on his birthday. his health. it seemed like he was giving that to the art world as well. >> that's absolutely right. this is a unique moment. as many, many musicians get older and face mortality, we've seen a lot of records thinking about getting older and mortality abstractly, but in this case specifically, someone who knew the end was coming, who had for the last 18 months lived with that knowledge and decided to face it down with his art, with a record that is challenging, that's been warmly received as a david bowie record, a classic david bowie record. that is a fitting testament to an artist of this nature. >> he will be missed. joe levy. thanks so much for sharing your perfect think of morning. we thank you. >> thank you. >> bowie's longtime producer put out a statement saying this al number in fact was his farewell to the world. >> swan song. >> we'll have much more on the

"the revenant" dominated the golden globes, winning best picture, best director and best actor for leonardo dicaprio. >> what an incredible honor. wow, that meant a lot. >> sci-fi entic "the martian" took full advantage of being labeled a comedy. >> comedy? >> topping the category for best picture and best actor. >> i've made a lot of movies that people just didn't go see. >> it was also last call for done draper with jon hamm winning best actor in a tv >> thank you so much.

sly stallion. so happy to see him get the trophy last night and a standing ovation. >> pretty awesome. >> ricky gervais not surprisingly took a shot at sean penn who was not at the globes this. comes in the wake of the stunning revelation that he secretly met with the mexican drug lord el chapo while el chapo was on the run after escaping from prison. now, mexican authorities want to talk to penn about that encounter. nbc's jacob rascon has more on this story. jacob, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. el chapo is back inside the prison behind me, mexico's top security facility where he escaped last july but it's what happened in between his escape and recapture with actor sean penn that has everyone's attention this morning. it is proof, according to actor sean penn, of of a scoop nobody saw coming. drug kingpin joaquin "el chapo" guzman, at the time the world's
7:13 am
questions for a "rolling stone" article in his first interview in decades. the reaction on social media has been swift. many finding it impossible that penn would meet el chapo, eat tacos and drink tequila and talk for seven hours but not turn him in. mexican authorities say penn's meeting might have even helped lead them to el chapo's hideout in the bloody shootout that ended with his arrest. that and the drug lord owes apparent infatuation with mexican soap opera saturday kate del castillo. in a made for hollywood plot twest del castillo who played a drug lord in a popular soap are a on sister network telemundo. >> she is one of tv's hottest stars. >> reporter: here she is promoting her show on "today" last year. >> what do you do? what does your character do? >> i kill people all the time. >> don't interrupt me. >> reporter: she also played a drug trafficker on the showtime series "weeds."
7:14 am
>> reporter: her connection to the real kingpin apparently started in 2012 when in an open letter on twitter she wrote, mr. mr. chapo, wouldn't it be cool if you started trafficking with love? you would be the hero of heros. life is a business, and the only thing that changes is the merchandise. don't you agree? guzman reportedly tried to send her flowers, though she never received any. while mexican authorities have said they are looking at whether sean penn faces any legal exposure in mexico, the focus of american law enforcement is getting el chapo to the united states, and they called the "rolling stone" article that el chapo allowed to screen before it was published quote, a sideshow. willie. >> jacob rascon, shank you so much. shaun henry is executive assistant director for the fbi and lisa bloom is "today's" legal analyst. good morning to you both. >> shaun, let me start with you. a lot of people saw the photograph of sean penn shaking
7:15 am
outraged and wanted to know how did he get so close to the man law enforcement has not been able to find? >> that's a great question, willie. you know, when i was in the fbi we were actively looking for -- for el chapo, and i know the resources the u.s. government but into locating him. there's been questions about the mexican government and if there's been any collaboration with them, if they were xlisit with el chapo, but the resources there and the ability to try and track him down, lots of questions here. i know the u.s. authorities are very, very interested in talking to sean penn. >> yeah. and sean penn himself said he thought the dea may be tracking him as he met and pursued with el chapo. do you suspect that sean penn's meeting had any relationship to the fact that authorities finally did catch up to el chapo? >> you know, i think that's a high likelihood. u.s. authorities constantly are looking at tracing digital media, looking at telephones and the like. penn himself talked about using
7:16 am
in which they use them for a day or two and drop them so that they couldn't be tracked, and then there's been some comments in the media by the mexican attorney general that said in fact that was one. ways they were tracking him, so another issue for -- for penn to be concerned about at this point. willie? >> and lisa, a lot of outrage was directed also at sean penn saying wait a minute. you met with this guy and didn't tell authorities about it. has he opened himself up to any legal action here? >> well, based on the fact that we now know absolutely not. he was acting as a journalist for a magazine. journalists are allowed to meet with people, even criminals, and it. what he can't do is materially help el chapo. if he gave him a dollar. if he helped him strategize, helped him escape or hide. then he would be in trouble, but >> all right. and the u.s. now saying it wants to extradite el chapo to the united states. we shall see. you both. >> thanks. and now to the presidential race with the iowa caucuses fast approaching.

i was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. then my doctor told me about eliquis. eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. knowing eliquis had both... turned around my thinking. don't stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. if you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily... and it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. eliquis treats dvt & pe blood clots. plus had less major bleeding.

8:58 am
>> he'll get a chance to thank him come oscar town. >> human nature. didn't have a speech and you get excited and thinking of all these things. >> tamron mentioned we were standing in the back of the room and in the commercial breaks the celebrities would come up and parade through to go to the bathroom and at one point helen mirren walks up past us holding two plates, half eaten food like this and she says in her gown and her jewels where's the kitchen? where's the kitchen and she's looking around and i said are you clearing your plate? she said, yes, i don't want to make a fuss for anyone. helen mirren, dame helen mirren cleared her plate. >> she's milling through all. other gowns and you have leonardo dicaprio, and she's like excuse me, excuse me. >> wouldn't accept any help. went to the kitchen and cleared her plate and went back to her table. >> she's real h.a lot of fun just hanging in the back as well.
8:59 am
and people were all around u u mingling. that's what the fun of it is. nobody really sits at their table long. they are up and around, working the room so i was hanging out th mark wahlberg and gina rodriguez. they have a movie coming out soon together and also taking some pictures of what was happening on stage that mel gibson moment, caught that one on camera as well, as ricky gervais made that joke that nobody really heard at home and everybody is like what did they say? we should though say a huge congratulations to our great friend christian slater who has been on our show many, many times, and we all said at the very beginning when we watched "mr. robot" we said this show is going to be a hit and he won for best supporting actor in television series. you know, the cast is just phenomenal, and i think it was -- it was just great to see that the show was rewarded. so deservedly show. won best television drama series.. >> christian won and the show. >> and had a terrific night on the red carpet. got a nice picture of all of us
