the south carolina republican presidential primary will be held saturday, february 20th. the democratic primary is the following week... on feburary 27th. voters must register by january 27th. republican presidential candidate mike huckabee was campaigning in the midlands sunday. the former governor of arkansas was at trinity baptist church i icayce meeting voters. but before, he delivered the sunday sermon and performed with the church choir and praise band. huckabee has drifted away from the top gop candidates.

necessarily predict what will happen at the iowa caucus. doctor ben carson will be in the midlands today. carson will join attornene general alan wilson for a forum in west columbia at the brookland baptist banquet and conference center at 5:30 p-m. we've learned the identity of the man killed while walking on garners ferry road near i-77 on friday night. 52-year-old samuel ferrell died after being hit by two vehicles. columbia police believe ferrell was in the road illegally, but the crash is still l der investigation. two men are in jail today accused of shooting into a mobile home saturday night. it happened in lugoff off springvale road. kershaw county deputies say the two suspects took off after firing several shots into the home wounding a man and woman. the victims are expected to be o-k. the suspects were caught after a brief chase. they are expected to be charged with attempted murder. saturday was the last day of 'restaurant week.' for one columbia restaurant the

milestone. sato japanese steakhouse was one of several shops in forest acres heavily damaged by the october flood. now, after tremendous support from its staff, the restaurant is back on its feet. wis' mike desumma has the story. "i'm here it's almost ten years right now." "flower...first everywhere." for more than a decade --- young kim says she's found, owning a successful restaurant -- takes one key ingredient. "i have the dream if i run business restaurant how can i do? the loyalty and happiness of a working staff. "if they make money? good! i'm happy." that's why, since taking over sato japense steakhouse back in 2006 --- many of her longtime employees are still here. 'she comes to our children's birthday parties...our kids go to church with her." "so it is like a real serious family here." a family that just months ago --- faced a massive challenge together.

"at a three-way stop my car just stalled out - right in the middle of the intersection." "it was very terrifying to think that i earlier that year -- to repair a safety defect in their ignition switches...that caused some vehicles to stop running and stall. the claims program g-m established has reported 124 deaths in crashes potentially related to that defect. sandra and her husband raymond had the ignition switch on their 2006 cobalt replaced...as part of that recall. the stalling incident at the intersection happened after the causin' it. you won't have any more issues with this." but after she reported stalling problems following the repair...she says...g-m did not inspect the car. g-m says it did offer to pay for a diagnostic service. but sandra claims s s declined the service because g-m did not offer to pay. stand-up: "in response to nbc news' questions, g-m has acknowledged that some of its customers have been reporting stalling problems in their recalled cars, after getting the ignition switch repairs. g-m says it's "very concerned" about these reports. it told nbc news its engineers have thoroughly inspected about fifty other such vehicles... but have found "no connection"

ignition switch repairs and stalling incidents. sandra lortie's cobalt model is on a consumer safety watchlist that gathers raw government data about vehicle incidents nationwide...and analyzes it for trends in death and injury claims. for the most recent year of data, g-m vehicles are well- represented on that list, in the aftermath of the ignition switch recall, which likely increased the reporting of such claims. all but one were models that had been part of that recall. most on the list for "electrical" problems. and consumer complaints registered with the industry's regulator include accounts similar to sandra lortie's. one driver reported: "i just received my car back after it was fixed and the same problems are occurring still. i was going 60 mph when my car completely lost power." another: "the vehicle stalled intermittently on several occasions. the failure soon recurred." sean kane, who founded the group that created the list, says all this raises questions. sot: "is the recall adequate? did the switch really fix the problem? are there other electrical issues that need to be addressed in these vehicles?"

that's a trend that needs to be further investigated. working with the safety institute, attorney lance cooper. he represented the parents of brooke melton... ...who died when the ignition switch in her cobalt failed in 2010. their lawsuits helped prove g-m knew of the defect for years...yet failed to act. the meltons are now using the settlement money...to fund the watchlist. sot: what we really hope is for other families to be able to use this information and-- and prevent accidents. we think it can save lives. sot: "we're hopeful - that this data can be used to get to the bottom of what's going on with these cars." g-m points out that the government views the data analyzed for the watch list as "unverified allegations." but g-m told nbc news it has found other electrical and fuel issues in some of the 50 vehicles it inspected ... and believes vehicle age and mileage may be factors. the lorties' vehicle had about 100,000 miles on it. it's shared its findings with

moves in on friday. deputies in richland county are working to find out more about an armed robbery and shooting on two notch road. investigators say it happened at the video express at around 11 p-m last night. the suspect reportedly entered the store and flashed a gun before demanding money. deputies say the victim gave the suspect cash from the register, to which the suspect then reportedly demanded cash from a safe which the victim didn't have access to. that's when the suspect shot the victim. deputies say the victim was able to find a gun to shoot the suspect before the suspect ran away on foot. the victim is expected to be okay. call crimestoppers at 1- 888-crime-sc if you have

one man is dead after a single vehicle crash in lexington county. it happened around three o'clock sunday morning on highway 302. highway patrol troopers say the driver ran off the side of the road, hit a guide wire and rolling over several times. the driver was thrown from the car. troopers say the victim was not wearing a seatbelt. we're still working to learn more about a crash in orangeburg that killed a child. troopers say around 3:15 sunday morning, two cars crashed head-on on highway 3 near springfield. the drivers and passengers of the cars in the crash were taken to the hospital. a child was pronounced dead. the crash is still under investigation. investigators say a pickup truck went off the highway and down an embankment in columbia. it last night happened on the on-ramp from i-20 east onto 277 north. firefighters responded to help the driver and upright the truck that ended up crashing into trees. we are still working to find out more on the condition of the driver. just into the wis alert center this morning... a space-x rocket has exploded out in the pacific ocean while

take a look at the -- video. after successfully launching the ocean monitoring satellite, the "jason three," into orbit, the rocket was headed for a floating barge in the pacific. but a support leg broke and it toppled over, bursting into flames. in this up close instagram post by the spacex founder, he writes the root cause of the failed landing may have been ice build up caused by heavy fog during lift off. sunday's launch was the 4th attempt to safey land the rocket at sea. the three democratic candidates took the stage in charleston in hopes of making a big push for your votes. the debate focused on two big issues- health care and gun control. our charles molineaux was at the debate last night and has a look back. sure enough, the gloves were off as the candidates went after each other on issues like who's the coziest with the big wall street banks with bernie sanders repeatedly mentioning hillary

right now, preparations are taking place in the capital city, where later this morning hundreds will honor the life of doctor martin luther king junior. our michal higdon is live in columbia where king day at the dome's festivities will begin in a matter of hours. king day at the dome will start at 8:30 this morning with a prayer service here at zion baptist church off washington street. that will be followed by a march to the state house where a rally for statewide education equity will begin at 10:15. the south carolina naacp has been hosting the king day rally for 16 years now. it was started in 2000 to

flew on down of the statehouse dome before being relocated to the front lawn. last summer, legislators voted to remove it from the complex altogether following the shooting deaths of nine black charleston parishioners. this year's call to action will be for education equity in south carolina -- and presidential politics will play a significant role. we're told the three democratic presidential candidates will be in columbia for the king day at the dome event. i'll have more details on that coming up in the next half hour. live in columbia, i'm michal higdon, wis news 10. the carolina panthers are off to the nfc championship game. it will be the top two seeds squaring off in charlotte, when the arizona cardinals come to town this weekend. the panthers punched their ticket by knocking off the seattle seahawks sunday. carolina got off to an unbelievable start, scoring on their first drive, then returning an interception for a touchdown. the panthers had a 31- to-zero lead at halftime. but -- the game got close in the second. carolina did not score another point, and the

after an exchange of gunfire following a car crash in salt lake city. investigators say police officer doug barney died from a gunshot wound to the head yesterday. barney and another officer responded to a traffic accident when they saw a man and a woman walking away from the scene. investigators say as officer barney approached the two people, the man shot and killed barney. the man was later killed by other officers who responded to the scene. "there was an obvious exchange of gunfire, and when i say exchange of gunfire, it appears that an individual fired what appears to be a single round at officer barney,

officer richie is listed as in stable condition. investigators in utah are still working to find out the circumstances leading up to the crash. police say the woman who was at the scene with the deceased suspect is still on the run. investigators are working to find out more behind the deaths of three new york college students. police say the three students were found dead inside a home near the state university of new york in geneseo among the dead are a 21-year-old and two 24- year-old students. two of the students were reportedly student-athletes at the school. police say they're not officially ruling the case a double murder-suicide. the snowy weather up north has posed dangerous driving situations for many in michigan. one person was killed after a multi-vehicle pile- up that shut down a stretch of one interstate in southwest michigan over the weekend. michigan state police say a total of 44 vehicles were

springvale road. kershaw county deputies say the two suspects took off after firing several shots into the home wounding a man and woman. the victims are expected to be o-k. the suspects were caught after a brief chase. they are expected to be charged with attempted murder. sled is investigating south carolina's first officer involved shooting of the year. early saturday morning -- investigators say orangeburg county deputies responded to a disturbance at the 'coasters club' on old number six highway in santee. someone shot at a deputy who returned fire. the officer was not hurt and has been placed on administrative leave. no word on the condition of the suspect. the investigation is o ooing. breaking right now in the wis alert center an ohio police officer was shot and killed early this morning. heres video from that active scene early this morning. the ohio state highway patrol says a danville police officer was reported missing while on duty around midnight. the officer was later found shot outside the

there are reports that 2 suspects have been taken into custody for allegedly shooting the officer and stealing his cruiser in front the police station. the officer has not yet been identified. 'restaurant week' is typically a time for celebrating the local flair at many eateries. yet for one columbia restaurant, it's also marked a milestone in getting back to business. 'sato japanese steakhouse' was just one business in forest acres that sustained significant flood damage last october. the restaurants owner young kim says she arrived at the building on october 4 -- to find that water had swept into every room. due to the risk of contamination every thing the water touched had to go. kim says she was able to hire contractors for major work. she says her staff also volunteered a lot of their time to paint and sand -- all to help the restaurant get back on its feet. the steakhouse was able to reopen officially in early december. staff members say they are grateful that many of its loyal customers have since come back to the restaurant. the carolina panthers are off to the nfc championship game. it will be the top two seeds squaring off in charlotte, when the arizona cardinals come to town this weekend. the panthers punched their ticket by knocking off the seattle seahawks sunday. carolina got off to an unbelievable start, scoring on their first drive, then returning an interception for a touchdown. the panthers had a 31- to-zero lead at halftime. but -- the game got close in the second. carolina did not score another point, and the seahawks rallied to close the gap to just a touchdown, but the panthers hold on to win, final score 31-to-24. the panthers will host the cardinals in the nfc championship this sunday. game time is 6:40. plenty more of today's top

martin luther king, jr. day. a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the king memorial in washington, d.c. at the national action network's annual king day breakfast, jennifer pinckney will receive an award on behalf of her late husband, senator clementa pinckney. pinckney was one of nine people killed at emanuel ame church back in june. the san diego chargers and the soon-to-be los angeles rams will reportedly kick off formal negotiations today. that's regarding the possibility of a joint stadium venture, according to nbc sports and the orange county register. the nfl just last week approved the rams' move from st. louis back to los angeles, and allowing the chargers to join them. apple's itunes radio service will no longer be free as of january 28-th.

americans are missing in iraq. local media reports three americans were kidnapped in the iraqi capital. reports say they were kidnapped in baghdad while on their way to the airport. iraqi security forces are going house to house trying to find them. the missing americans haven't been identified just yet but the u.s. embassy says it's working with iraqi officials to locate the americans. hours after the u-s lifted sanctions on iran for complying with parts of the nuclear deal, the two countries announced the release of prisoners held in each country. the u-s is setting seven prisoners free as part of a negotiated swap, and iran is releasing five prisoners -- four as part of that swap. their loved ones back home are relieved and grateful for a day many feared would never come. reid binion reports :00 :36 :47 1:06 "i couldn't live my life every day knowing that was happening to him. the crash is still under investigation. two men are in jail today accused of shooting into a mobile home saturday night. it happened in lugoff off springvale road. kershaw county deputies say the two suspects took off after firing several shots into the home wounding a man and woman. the victims are expected to be o-k. the suspects were caught after a brief chase. they are expected to be charged with attempted murder. sled is investigating south carolina's first officer involved shooting of the year. early saturday morning -- investigators say orangeburg county deputies responded to a disturbance at the 'coasters club' on old number six highway in santee. someone shot at a deputy who returned fire. the officer was not hurt and has been placed on administrative leave. no word on the condition of the suspect. the investigation is ongoing. feeling every bit of winter as we'll see below normal temperatures much of the week. arctic air has settled down over much of the southeast, look for

right now in the wis alert center... an ohio police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty early this morning. heres video from that active scene early this morning. the ohio state highway patrol says a danville police officer was shot around midnight investigators are now working to determine what led up to the shooting. initial reports indicate that the suspect left the scene in the officers vehicle. there are reports that 2 suspects have been taken into custody. the officer has not yet been identified. one utah police officer is dead and another injured after an exchange of gunfire following a car crash in salt lake city. investigators say police officer doug barney died from a gunshot wound to the head yesterday. barney and another officer responded to a traffic accident when they saw a man and a woman walking away from the scene. investigators say as officer barney approached the two

"there was an obvious exchange of gunfire, and when i say exchange of gunfire, it appears that an individual fired what appears to be a single round at officer barney, striking him in the head." officer richie is listed as in stable condition. investigators in utah are still working to find out the circumstances leading up to the crash. police say they have arrested a woman who was at the scene, and she's being questioned. the snowy weather up north has posed dangerous driving situations for many in michigan. one person was killed after a multi-vehicle pile- up that shut down part of an interstate. michigan state police say a total of 44 vehicles were involved in the wreck.. 14 people were injured, including three people who sustained life- threatening injuries. police say another 12- vehicle pile-up happened around the same time, which involved six semi- trucks. florida residents are in

and two 24- year-old students. two of the students were reportedly student-athletes at the school. police say they're not officially ruling the case a double murder-suicide. the surviving boston marathon bomber must pay his victims more than 101 million dollars. that ruling came from a federal judge overseeing the case against dzhokhar tsarnaev. restitution payments to the 49 victims and their families must begin immediately. the judge also denied the tsarnaev defense team's motion for a new trial. tsarnaev was sentenced to death for the april 20-13 attack that killed three people and wounded more than 40 others. chipotle is closing all of its restaurants for several hours next month to talk food safety. more than 19-hundred chipotle restaurants will close for several hours on february 8th for a national team meeting with employees. they will discuss food safety changes that are being implemented in light of e-coli and salmonella outbreaks that sickened many last year. a federal investigation into the origins of the outbreaks is

morning -- a space-x rocket has exploded in the pacific ocean while attempting to land. this is the video released overnight. after successfully launching the ocean monitoring satellite, the "jason three," into orbit, the rocket was headed for a floating barge in the pacific. but it burst into flames after a support leg broke and the rocket fell over. the root cause of the failed landing may have been ice build up caused by heavy fog during lift off. the five americans that have been released from prison in iran are now in germany. reports say they first went to a u-s military hospital and will see their families soon. the five, including a washington
