an overturned tractor trailer shut down part of the interstate near the i-26 west exit, which is exit 169b. the crash and cleanup closed all the lanes in that direction and cause backup for hours. we have calls into the highway patrol and sc-d- o-t to find out if there are any injuries. new tonight... the richland county councilman who was arrested just weeks ago on tax charges has been removed from an important council committee. the council chairman tells wis that councilman kelvin washington has been taken off ththcounty's transportation ad hoc committee. our chad mills has more. that committee oversees projects related to the county's transportation penny. that penny program, of course, is under the microscope after an audit by the department of revenue found "multiple instances of illegal activity

with the penny program." and, because of that audit, officials say they discovered criminal activity that wasn't directly related to the penny program. councilman kelvin washington was charged with three counts of willful failure to file a tax return. now, washington has been replaced on the county's transportation committee. councilman norman jackson has been replaced too. when asked why he removed the two councilmen, chairman torrey rush said all committees are reappointed at the begegning of the year, s s he decided to reshuffle the committee. councilman seth rose has been before a very big meeting of afternoon -- where councilmen will discuss a collection of proposals meant to fix the problems with the penny tax program. councilman rose introduced the majority of them and tells me he's excited about the new leadership role. "tomorrow's a very important meeting, and it's the first step in moving forward and getting some corrective measures in place and

measures in place. / and i wanted to be a part of the committee, so i could help advocate for these motions and other measures that i think will be very important moving forward." that meeting is at one o'clock tomorrow afternoon. i reached out to councilman washington for comment but didn't hear back. i did hear back from councilman norman jackson. he was very upset that he was removed from the committee, since he told me he's an expert when it comes to transportation. he told me it could be some kind he's no longer serving on that committee. columbia joined with cities across the state and the country to celebrate the life and impact of dr. martin luther king junior. today's events in the capital city included a wreath laying at the king historic marker. that brought out a crowd at the corner of harden and greene streets. before breath leaves your body. so he wanted to be remembered as someone who lived as long as he was on earth." members of alpha phi alpha fraternity led the ceremony. dr. king became a member of that fraternity in 1952 at boston university where he received his doctorate degree. and after the wreath laying many people headed over to martin luther king, junior park for the e ty of columbia's annual mlk day celebration. local leaders spoke at both events including u- s-c president harris pastides. community leaders gathered at brookland baptist church today for the columbia urban league's annual mlk breakfast. state superintendent of education molly spearman talked about the importance of teaching students the life skills that will serve them well in the work force ... like punctuality, integrity and the ability to work well with others. her message touted the urban league's mission of breaking down barriers and reminding local business leaders of what king's legacy means for

hundreds marched to statehouse today for the king day at the dome rally hosted by the south carolina naacp. it is one of the biggest king day events in the southeast. speakers talked to the crowd about justice, equity in education and the shooting at mother emanuel ame in charleston which ultimately led to the removal of the confederate battle flag from the statehouse, something the naacp had been pushing for, for years. "i'd like for us to continue to carry on trying to achieve his dream for all of us and i do have some concerns that our numbers won't be quite as high as they ought to be because we may feel a sense of accomplishment because the flag has come down but we need to continue to be here and show support for achieving the dream." "south carolina has had a very, very difificult time with civil rights throughout history and especially in the last year. in the last year, there have been individuals that have

sanders campaign has some "killer" support in the palmetto state. after last night's democratic debate in charleston, rapper mike render, also known as "killer mike" spoke out in favor of his preferred candidate, bernie sanders. hillary clinton has strong support among south carolina black voters. sanders said last night, and again at the state house today, that's because she's better known here but his supporters aim to change that. render says he's one of them. "black people are often put in a position of this: 'me, or those crazy guys.' and we have to go with what we're given. this is an opportunitytywhere you don't have to go with what you're given. you have a choice on the democratic slate. you don't have to pick a name because you know it. look at their policies. look at their philosophies. look at that picture of dr.

"we are dedicateteto trying to locate and bring back these service members." jeffrey sempler graduated from woodruff high school four years ago. late this afternoon... authorities searching off hawaii said they found three inflated life rafts that had been carried aboard the helicopters. they're still trying to figure out what caused the crash. glenn frey, one of the founders of the band "the eagles" has passed away. frey died in new york city after fighting with rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia. the frey family issued a statement on the band's website saying that words can neither describe their sorrow, love and respect for all that glenn has given them. frey helped form"the eagles" back in the early 70s with drummer don henley. he was 67-years-old. today, people in florida are cleaning up after a e- f-2 tornado ripped through parts

falling from a ladder into a hole --- 15 feet deep -- while a crew was working on a new costco site in richland county. emergency crews worked more than 2 hours to pull the victim to safety. at the site off piney grove road, they used rope and even some of the construction equipment on scene. the victim was secured, pulled up and moved quickly to a waiting helicopter. we're told the victim was in stable condition when

investigators in clarendon county are looking into the case of a woman who ended up dead in a lake after "two" accidents. last night the clarendon county coroner reports michelle hickson of florence was involved in a crash on i-95 near the orangeburg county line. then she got out her car and was hit by another car and fell into lake marion. a dnr dive team pulled her out today. a man wanted in a murder in washington, d-c is now behind bars in clarendon county. sheriff randy garrett confirms william lee lewis was arrested around three this afternoon. the sheriff says deputies got a tip to go to the forest villa apartments in manning, where they found lewis. investigators say lewis has been on the run for the past month wanted in connection to a murder in the nations capital in early november. lewis is in the clarendon county jail awaiting a hearing. sumter police say the mother reported missing friday has contacted them. investigators say 27- year-old shardae davis told a detective she was ok, but didn't want to come to the police because of an outstanding shoplifting warrant in horry county. investigators say they still
