on the basketball court at mount pisgah elementary... ...parents cheered as speakers scored points against the kershaw county school board trustees in the loud, sometimes unruly, battle on the hardwood. one by one, they took the mic to tell superintended dr. frank morgan and the board they don't want to see this school and nearby bethune elementary close and consolidate elsewhere. chris mangum says a consolidated school would hurt the education of his children. "why do people want to come to a community? jobs. but with those jobs, if they have kids, why would they want to come somewhere where they don't know if their kid will get a good education or will be bussed 30 miles." the board has considered the idea before. it was part of a 2014 referendum that was shot

now, the district is considering the possibility of creating another referendum that would include the consolidation measure yet again. "we are in the education business, and we have to do the best we can for the children. this is about children for me: safety for children, economic qualifications -- i mean -- the economics is one thing, but the quality of education is the most important thing to me." board chairman ron blackmon said the move to consolidate would only increase learning. in this meeting, he had hoped to talk about where to put a new possible consolidated school, but that didn't happen. after a motion to table the discussion failed, some of the parents in the crowd fought discussion was tabled until the mangum says it was a minor victory. representative grady brown, who was also at

"they've spoken again and again, 'we do not want our schools closed.' the school board seems to not understand that." that was chad mills reporting. there's no new referendum at this point that would give the voters a choice whether to consolidate the schools -- even though board members voted 8-to-1 in a previous meeting to consolidate them at a site to be determined. our michal higdon is following this story this morning. she'll have more on the concerns about the potential economic impact on the area....if the board moves forward. michal will join us live, starting at 5am. most presidential candidates spent tuesday campaigning in new hampshire. but republican ted cruz knows he has alot riding on the south carolina primary. he held a big rally in greenville last night. "we're going to win the south carolina primary, we are going to win the nomination, we're going to win the general election, we're going to beat hillary clinton and we're going to turn this country around" cruz also picked up an endorsement from representative jeff duncan, a republican who

next tuesday, voters in new hampshire will have their say in decision 2016. starting monday, our will whitson will be there providing live coverage. and then it's south carolina's turn. the republican primary is saturday, february 20th. the democratic primary is the following week on february 27th. an effort by state lawmakers to speed up the debate on how to fix south carolina's roads and bridges has hit a roadblock of its own. senate pro tem hugh leatherman told the senate finance committee tuesday that he wants to bring in the department of transportation and the state infrastructure bank to explain their roles to senators. that move would push the debate on the senate floor to at least the middle of february. state lawmakers are also working out specifics on how south carolina's lieutenant governor will be chosen in two years. last election, voters approved a measure that would allow candidates running for governor to pick a running mate. the lieutenant governor has always been chosen in a separate race. lawmakers have now decided that

governor will be chosen after they're nominated by the party...instead of when they file their candidacy. this would all take effect in the 2018 election cycle. the bill now heads to the senate. there's a new warning from health officials in texas. last night, they reported a case of zika virus said to be transmitted through sexual contact. mosquitos are the main transmitters of the virus--though there have been a few cases where sexual transmission was suspected. now health officials and human services in dallas are reporting a patient who acquired the disease through sexual contact. medical experts say the case comes as no surprise. "dallas county health and human services has received confirmation of a zika case associated with acquiring locally, and as a result of that, we informed our medical community and the public at large that zika has made its appearance in dallas county." the centers for disease control and prevention say the patient who developed zika did not have

most infected people won't have any symptoms if they contract zika--but experts are concerned about a potential link between the virus and a rise in birth defects in parts of latin america. family and friends of a columbia woman shot to death last week are remembering her bright smile and even brighter personality. last night, those who knew deanndra roach held a candlelight vigil at the vine church on clemson road. nearly 100 people including her parents gathered together to pray for peace and understanding. roach's ex-boyfriend has been charged with her murder. her body was found by investigators last friday off of farrow road. "she was a very, very beautiful person. i would never never have a friend like deanndra. it's just the small things she used to do before she left. it's just feels unreal that she's actually gone. i don't know i just try not to think about it." family members are now preparing for deanndra's funeral. meanwhile, investigators are

thursday night on the news at 11. hundreds of layoffs are coming to yahoo in a shakeup that could determine whether it's ceo can save her own job. the company announced yesterday it will cut 15 percent of its workforce. ceo marissa mayer has been trying to fend-off a group of angry shareholders who say she hasn't made progress in trying to turn around yahoo's financial performance. yahoo's revenue has shrunk during her time as it struggles to compete with companies like google and facebook. comedian bill cosby was back in a pennsylvania court yesterday asking a judge to throw out sexual assault charges against him. chris pollone reports that much of his case hinges on the testimony of a key former official. despite clutching a cane, 78-year old bill cosby moved swiftly into the montgomery county courthouse ahead of a pivotal hearing in his sexual assault case. cosby faces trial for a 2004 incident with former temple university employee

downtown greenville. that official announcement will be monday. right now... the campus has one facility already in greenville, and officials say they plan to keep that location. usc upstate's main campus is in spartanburg. right now in the wis alert center... the centers for disease control and prevention confirms a case of the zika virus being transmitted through sexual contact -- in texas. it is the first known case of the virus being acquired in the united states in the current outbreak. the case involves a patient who had sexual contact with someone recently infected in venezuela with the mosquito-borne virus. this is just the third known case linking zika to sexual activity. the cdc says it will soon provide guidance on the sexual transmission of zika. the virus has been linked to a birth defect that leads to babies being born with abnormally small heads. the world health organization estimates up to four million people across the americas will be infected with zika in the next year. discussion in kershaw county on

proposed consolidated elementary school came to a head last night. the school board decided to postpone further talks on the matter until it's next meeting. our michal higdon is live at mt. pisgah elementary school this morning with the latest on this- michal mount pisgah elementary and bethune elementary are the two schools that board members are looking to consolidate. numerous parents in the community that we've spoken with are completely against the idea. they want to keep their own schools -- in their respective towns. that was the sentiment echoed by many concerned parents at last night's public meeting at mt. pisgah. kershaw county school district board members voted 8-to-1 in a previous meeting to consolidate the schools at a site to be determined. district officials are pushing for the new school -- because the two schools in question do not have up-to-date facilities. board members say the quality of education is the most important and the move to consolidate would increase learning. "how do you best serve students in small rural schools -- provide them the same, and more opportunities for students

georgia has just executed its oldest death row inmate overnight just hours after a federal court rejected an appeal from his attorneys. 72-year-old brandon astor jones was executed just before 1am. he was convicted in the 1979 killing of a convenience store manager during a robbery in atlanta. a federal judge granted jones a new sentencing hearing in 1989 because jurors were improperly allowed to bring a bible into their deliberation room. he was resentenced to death in 1997. another man was also convicted and received a death sentence in

plane trouble mid-flight off the coast of hawaii lead to an emergency water landing. the pilot of the plane was experiencing mechianical problems and had to ditch the aircraft in a nearby lagoon. the team of emergency crews were able to pull the uninjured pilot from the water. authorities say the pilot was unable to get the plane's landing gear down. the pilot was reportedly the only person on board. a house oversight committee is

a house oversight committee is scheduled to hold a hearing in washington, d.c. on the safe drinking water act in flint, michigan. flint's tap water was contaminated with lead after the source switched from detroit to the flint river in 2014. it was a cost-cutting move made while the city was under state financial management. the water was not properly treated and caused lead from pipes to seep into the drinking water. barack obama is about to make his first visit to an american mosque as president. president obama is scheduled to visit the islamic society of baltimore today. he's expected to hold a roundtable with community members and deliver remarks. the president will celebrate muslim americans' contributions to teh nation. he will also quote "reaffirm the importance of religious freedom to our way of life." the president has visited mosques overseas, but never on during his presidency in the u-s. ' an effort to override president obama's veto of a bill that would have repealed key provisions of obamacare has failed in the house. the bill also would have stripped federal funding from planned parenthood. the vote of 241 to 186 fell

our michal higdon is live at mt. pisgah elementary school where parents met with school leaders last night in an effort to get the district to change it's mind -- michal? overwhelming response from parents at last night's meeting ultimately lead to the kershaw county school board's decision to postpone discussion on the location of a consolidated school -- until it's next meeting. many parents do not want to see mt. pisgah or bethune elementary schools close -- if it means students will have to move to a consolidated campus in a different location. not only are parents concerned about their children possibly having a longer bus ride to a new school -- they're also worried about future community growth. residents who live in bethune say losing their high school and middle school in the past couple of decades -- makes them more concerned about the

france's government is calling for a three-month extension of the state of emergency that was declared after the novermber terror attacks in paris. the measure proposed just this morning in a cabinet meeting now requires parliament's approval. the state of emergency has already been extended once and was scheduled to end on february 26th. it expands police powers to carry out searches and arrests. todod, u-s house lawmakers will discuss the water crisis in flint michigan. an oversight committee will take a close look at the flint safe drinking water it was established by the e-p-a in october after lead wawadetected in flint's tap the contamination happened after a cost- cutting move in 2014...when the city switched it's water source from detroit to the flint flint's finances were being managed by the state of michigan at the time. california regulators have voted to extend mandatory water cutbacks first set by governor jerry brown last year.

now of a tornado that ripped through parts of mississippi last night. the homeowner was recording when that massive twister moved through this neighborhood. when it was all over -- several buildings including a church were left in ruins. one man who witnessed the storm described what happened as the tornado hit near his home. happening right now to make repairs. a tornado tracked across pickens county on tuesday afternoon. the storm originated in scooba, mississippi where the local national weather service office confirmed a tornado there. there is a tornado warning for pickens, lamar, and fayette counties until 6 p.m. the storm has been moving in a northeastern direction from geiger to aliceville to carrollton. we expect the storm to continue tracking to fayette county. aliceville police said that the storm damaged the federal corrections institute in aliceville as well as a few homes nearby. storm tracker brett adair reports significant damage to structures north of mcmullen. there were reports of two people who were trapped north of mcmullen. one person was freed and crews were working to rescue another person. minor injuries were reported in that area. a brick home has damage and several mobile homes have been damaged as well along martin luther king road. we are also receiving reports of trees and utility poles down. strong winds blew pastor ray

morning in the alert center of a small plane's dramatic landing in hawaii. take a look. the pilot on this plane had technical problems with the landing gear. you can see the plane's front propeller stopped moving. the plane skirted across the water below, eventually landing in the sea. emergency crews were there to rescue the pilot from the water. authorities say the 68- year-old pilot from australia was not hurt. we're told he has 40 years of flying experience. two senior military leaders say women should be requirir to register for the draft. restrictions that barred women from combat jobs

parents and kershaw county school board members are not seeing eye-to-eye on combining two local schools. our michal higdon is live at mt. pisgah elementary school where parents met with school leaders last night in an effort to get the district to change it's mind -- michal? overwhelming response from parents at last night's meeting ultimately lead to the kershaw county school board's decision to postpone discussion on the location of a consolidated school -- until it's next meeting. many parents do not want to see mt. pisgah or bethune elementary schools close -- if it means students will have to move to a consolidated campus in a different location. not only are parents concerned about their children possibly having a longer bus ride to a new school -- they're also worried
