"i think you don't realize, you know, how great something or someone is until you don't have them anymore." a year ago, sougiannis was a research assistant under beloved exercise science professor dr. raja fayad. he was doing labwork when this woman, sunghee kwon, joined fayad in a nearby office. about fifteen minutes later -- a loud noise from inside that office. "immediately, i thought, when i heard a bang, it was some equipment breaking as it always does somewhere in a lab, but then, i

"dispatcher: 911. sougiannis: yes, hello. i'm in the public health research center here on campus, and we just heard gunshots, and there's blood dripping out of my professor's door." fayad was shot and killed by kwon, his ex-wife, who then killed herself. documents show that kwon was "very stressed" after trying unsuccessfully to become a student in fayad's department both before and after the divorce. those records say she finalized her "last will" about two weeks before the shooting and pawned jewelry to buy a gun just days before it. "we remember dr. fayad as, you know, who he was -- a great scientist and a great person above all." a year later, sougiannis is focused on remembering

"that was really his mission was to get nutrition, early diagnosis, pharmaceutical treatment, exercise to all come together to be a treatment to colon cancer." a year later, sougiannis is keeping fayad's legacy and research alive. "i'm glad to be a part of his legacy. with the way academia works is, once you graduate from someone's lab, you become part of their family tree, so they graduate students that go on to teach other students, so i was glad to at least get the two years that i had with him, so i can be part of his legacy. anyone that i train, from now on, will have part of his training in him." with that said, the cedar tree and message below it affections are divided like the branches of the cedar tree; if the tree loses one strong branch, it will suffer but it does not die. it will pour out all its
