now. announcer: now "abc7 news at 6:00". on your side. maureen: it's being treated as an act of terror. tonight two major searches are underway. the first in the mediterranean sea where egyptair flight from paris to cairo vanished. scott thuman is following the story from the terrorism alert desk. scott? scott: the late e, there is widespread speculation that this is a terror attack. that a bomb took down the egyptair flight with 66 people on board. but at this hour no one claimed responsibility. the flight heading to cairo and just around the time that it made its way to egyptian air space, it made a sudden 790-degree turn. then 360-degree turn in the other direction plummeted and eventually disappeared from radar. whether it was fine. the pilot was said to be experienced. had a fine reputation and seemed in good spirits i

radio conversations. greek, egyptian, parisian military teams are searching for wreckage and answers. >> let's not try to jump to decide to identify this as a technical failure. if you analyze the situation properly the possibility of having a different action abroad of having a terror attack is higher than having a technical problem. >> we have learned a lot since 9/11 about what is necessary to protect the aviation system. it has not diminished the desire of extremist organizations to try to carry out attacks against the aviation system. scott: a lot has been made of the fact that the plane left charles de gaulle airport in paris. i have been there half a dozen times in the past year. security is very tight. thorough for passengers. what about the ground crew? that is being investigated at this moment. and, of course, the fact that this was the fifth leg of the flight for this

it had come from tunisia, and they are trying to find out if anything unusual occurred in those places. a lot to lack into. maureen: scott, thank you so much. today's news comes almost two months after a major security breach on egyptair. in march a man hijacked a flight saying he had a bomb. i turned out to be fake and no one was hurt. also, last october a bomb exploded on a metro jet flight bound from sharm el-sheikh, egypt to st. petersburg, russia. a bomb killed everyone on board. the group liminged to isis took responsibility. leon: closer to home, donald trump convention delegate is facing child porn, weapon and explosive charges. they indicted 30-year-old caleb bailey of waldorf. investigators seized illegal machine gun from bailey's home and

child pornography and illegally shipping explosives by mail. maureen: d.c. fire and e.m.s. officer facing chargeses of processing drug and illegal firearm. they arrested captain brian michael grace yesterday who lives in centreville, maryland is free pending the next court date in august. leon: we now know the major changes coming to metro starting in 15 days. that is when the year-long safety blitz called safe track will begin with a shutdown of a major stretch of track. metro released a final version of the plan today. abc7 transportation reporter brianne carter is looking at it and joins us with a look at what the riders need to know about this. tell us about this. brianne: well, leon it means the riders in boston will be the first to experience the long-term single tracking. then on the heels of that comes the first shutdown. section will be shut down on the

16 days. throughout the time, the riders could see the service cut by 70-80%. >> delay and major disruption for commuters for a year. >> well, you know, i mean i guess we will figure out something. >> pam rides the rails daily to get from ballston to work downtown. in a matter of days, her stretch along the orange and the silver line will be single tracking continuously for two weeks. she plans to take the bus. >> it adds a lot. it goes through georgetown. not so bad in the morning but in the afternoon it takes a long time. brianne: the first of five shut down happens from benning road to minnesota avenue. perhaps a greater impact will come in the fall when a section of the red line will be closed for 23 days. impacting more than 100,000 trips. >> if it says i have to do

girl at the hands of her stepfather and stepbrother. today, ciboros face charges in ohio court. this is what the victim told the neighbor. >> she has a 50-point and if she loses 50 points she will go to the basement and gets handcuffed. you can see the handcuffs on her ankles. leon: police say when they arrived at the home the family was in a van, possibly trying to flee. police found a gun inside the van, inside the home they found shackles and a bucket that appeared to contain human waste. maureen? maureen: a jury heard opening statements today in the trial of an attorney accused of assaulting a mclean couple at their home. police say andrew schmuhl and his wife forced their way in the home and assaulted leo fisher and sue duncan in november 2014. prosecutors say that the schmuhls wanted revenge against alecia schmuhl's former boss and his w

the defense said andrew schmuhl actions were influencedded by prescription drugs. leon: a verdict is expected to come on monday in the trial of the baltimore police officer edward nero who is facing charges stemming from freddie gray's arrest and death. the lawyers made the closing argument today before judge williams. nero chose to have a bench trial rather than let a jury hear the case. nero is charged with assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. gray as you may know died of injuries he suffered in police custody following the arrest in april 2015. maureen: up next, a family tries to tighten drunk drivg laws. >> it shouldn't take so many lost lives and it shouldn't take noah leotta for this to happen. maureen: what still bothers him about the effort to toughen the drunk driving laws. leon: start planning now for indoor events. timing of a heavy dose of rain headed here this weekend.

indianapolis today brought hugs to the family of montgomery county police officer noah leotta. that signing makes noah's law a reality. maryland bureau chief brad bell reports on the law that will require ignition interlock for anyone convicted of drunk driving in maryland. brad: for rich leotta it has been a painful journey. today, standing behind governor larry hogan as he signs a bill named for leotta's fallen officer son -- >> drunk driving act of 2016. noah's law. brad: -- he is able to declare victory. >> a good day for us and the state of maryland. brad: this story bess ginning in rockville pike in december. montgomery county police officer noah leotta pulled over a car and suddenly he is struck and killed by a repeat offender/drunk driver named luis reluzco. after a period of intense grief, rich leotta focuses all of his energy on passing what became known as "noah's law." to require breathalyzer ignition interlock for

in august. virginia is toughening the drunk driving laws. governor terry mcauliffe approved rules requiring ignition interlock to come equip with cameras. that is to ensure the person taking the breathalyzer test is the vehicle's driver. leon: oklahoma legislator has approved a bill to make performing an abortion a felony punishable by up to three years in prison. in addition to that, any physician who performs an abortion would be barred from obtaining or renewing a medical license in oklahoma. the spokesman for governor mary fallin will withhold comment until she reviews the bill. maureen: scott morley safer pasd away today, a week after he retired. the retirement was prompted in part by failing health. hi joined "60 minutes" in 1970. in vietnam war
