tv New Day Cleveland FOX October 17, 2016 10:00am-11:00am EDT
10:00 am
- welcome to new day cleveland. i'm david moss, and check it out. here we are, about two hours and 15 minutes from cleveland, in a place called granville. granville, a cool little town, because it's the home of denison university. let's see, steve carell went there, jennifer garner, woody hayes, a whole bunch of really cool people, including the guys who put central park together, that's right, right in new york city. so you've got a town that looks really cool, it's got that new england feel, we've got some stuff that's being remodeled, and new, we've got some stuff that's old and cool, and we're gonna start off the show at a great place called the granville inn.
10:01 am
this is one of the most beautiful places i've seen, walking down the street from the center of town, and it's called the, - granville inn. - and how long has it been the granville inn? - it's been the granville inn since 1924. - 1924, and sean mulryan, you haven't been here the whole time, have you? - no i have not. i actually just came on recently, so. but yeah, she was built in 1924, this actually used to be the property of the granville women's college until 1898, and then it was purchased by a local gentleman by the name of john jones, and he put the inn up here and opened it up 924, and it's been a destination ever since. - [david] you referred to the inn as a she, almost like a sailor does to a ship. - [sean] yes, yes i did. you know, it just has that grande dame feel to it, so, you know, just-- - [david] yeah, it sure does. - [sean] yep. - [david] i just love that feeling, i mean, just walking into the place, you see all the beautiful chiseled and mason stone. just fantastic, and the copper work of just the sign is just incredible, coming in. - yes. you know, we just recently went through a nine million dollar renovation,
10:02 am
million dollars? - yes. - [david] you fixed up a couple things. - a couple things, yes. but really, you know, the main thing we did was we protected that historical integrity of the building, so when you walk through, a lot of the woodwork is original, the stonework is original, we have a lot of original pieces, the chandeliers have been hanging since the 1930s, and so we just renovated, and restored, and really the big things were, basically took the skeleton of the building out, put a brand new skeleton in. - [david] i'm sure it's comfortable, but i tell you what, all that old treasure is still there. i just love when you walk in that first big dining room, the fireplace, i could park a car in the fireplace. - [sean] oh yes. - [david] i mean, that's amazing. - yes, and we're currently, right now working on getting our fireplaces up and running before we get too cold. - [david] ok, that's great. and i saw some special meeting rooms, but there seem to be a couple of areas in addition to the bar, that you have for dining and such, and then i saw an elevator, so that means there's rooms upstairs, right?
10:03 am
during the renovation-- - [david] not from 1924. - [sean] no, not at all, and so that, actually where the elevator is right now on the first floor, that actually used to be the women's restroom. and so we were actually able to put in an elevator, used to be you could only access the upper floors through our main staircase. renovated all the rooms in the building as well, we added nine rooms up on our third floor, so those are actually brand new. that used to be a peaked attic, and were able to add nine more rooms. - [david] is that a old carriage house in the back? - [sean] yes, the carriage house is actually the oldest part of the property. point was a small gymnasium, for the granville women's college. - [david] oh. - [sean] and then there were dorm rooms above it, and when mr. jones purchased the property, he renovated that, the gymnasium, into a carriage house, and then renovated it and made rooms above it. - [david] i would like to live in the carriage house. - oh yes, the carriage house is beautiful. - [david] i mean, yes, just fantastic. so how many rooms did we say are available here? - 39. - [david] 39. so that must be great for when students' parents come down here to visit, or for special events, this must be like a prime,
10:04 am
h yes they do, yes they do. we have quite the long waiting list for denison graduation, we were actually taking, all the way out, we're getting inquiries all the way out as far as 2018-- - [david] i bet. - [sean] so, for, graduation. - [david] so how's the food around this place? - oh, very good. our chef does a wonderful job. he's been here for seven years, over the years has won quite a few awards, and lovely, lovely food. - yeah, i really got a kick out of seeing people sittin' out here on a beautiful day, out on these patios. they're a throwback also. - [sean] oh yes, yes. there used to be an awning on the front of the building, and that was there for about 20 years, and we actually had taken that down, and went back to the original blueprint of frank packard, had drawn up, where this was an outdoor patio for seating, and so we went back to the original plans. - yeah. - and, i love eating outdoors. - yeah. and you know, another thing i like about the granville inn is, it's not too far from town. i walked up here, it was easy.
10:05 am
le who come out here, and that's one thing i love, is that, it is the proximity to downtown. you can come, you can have lunch or dinner here, go into town, have ice cream down the street, and we do quite a few, actually do a lot of packages with the local businesses, too, as well. so we can package a room and then we do gift certificates to the different businesses downtown. - [david] i have a favorite, too. i have a favorite, we're gonna walk down there right now. it's called green velvet. (mellow accordion and horn music) in the sense that what we offer is vintage, as well as chic. and it's all things giftable, so, when a person comes into the store, they're gonna find those one-of-a-kind gifts that you're not gonna find anywhere else. and we often hear our customers say,
10:06 am
or that person who's hard to buy for, who maybe, we think has everything, but they really don't. so they're going to find an amazing selection of gifts, and not only gifts maybe for a birthday, but maybe you're headed to a wedding reception, or a baby shower. and then, what about gifts for ourselves? you know, things for the home, things that you're going to wear. there's just an amazing collection that will remind you of stepping off of a street somewhere in paris, and just sneaking into a cozy little boutique, where you can relax and just take in, there's a lot of sensory here as well, and the music in the background that's playing, and the candles, and the soaps. just, there's a lot here to really just, take it all in from your senses.
10:07 am
our customers have grown accustomed to being able to come in, and pick up something very unique. our napa soaps, what's really cool about these, are that they are actually named after different types of wine, from chardonnay, to a cab, to a riesling, zinfandel. just really cool, very unique, one-of-a-kind soaps that you're not going to find anywhere else. and what we love is that what we have back here, are items that will take you from day to night. so, it's just a matter of maybe swapping out some jewelry, changing up a belt, a scarf, a jacket. we carry some amazing labels. we have blue pepper, we have scandal which is our italian label.
10:08 am
variety of shapes and sizes. we have things that appeal to the college student, here at denison, to women who shop here in their 60s and 70s. one of our most popular lines is mariana, and this comes from israel. but it is definitely for that individual who likes a little bling. and then our la vie, very different than mariana in the sense that it does come from france, and more of a feel of vintage. and then we also have our lotti dottie collection, and a lot of people are familiar with lotti dottie because it is the magnetic, so you can swap out, the stones in a necklace and a bracelet and a ring, which makes it a lot of fun, 'cause you can always be changing it up. this is our stonewall kitchen collection, and this is amazing.
10:09 am
spend time in the kitchen, cooking or baking, you're gonna find items that are very unique. everything from dinner items to side dishes, to breakfast if you have overnight guests, and who doesn't love a great maple pumpkin butter, or things for dessert. so this is one thing that a lot of people love to come in and pick up, and take home. whether you're shopping for a little girl, or it's gonna be a boy, we've got you covered. lots of stuffed animals, jellycat is one of our brands that's very popular. little clothes that you just can't find anywhere else, and also we wanna let everybody know that we do gift wrap for free. so really, we take the hard part away, right? all you gotta do is give the gift, and that's the fun part.
10:10 am
10:13 am
w are you, nicole? - [nicole] good, you? - good, good, i love your store, these are the kind of stores i love, because they've got stuff in here, like when i want really good socks or something, and it gets a little cold, or you comfortable, you got 'em, right? - we do, we do. we're an outdoor gear company, and then we focus mainly on high-altitude mountaineering boots, and high-altitude mountaineering equipment, specifically for climbing everest-- - [david] ok. - and other high peaks. and then we also do a lot of small things, for the local town of granville. - ok, so i'm gonna grab a small thing over here, denison, so the kids get their gear here, right? - mm-hmm, the kids get their gear here. this was actually a shop owned by a local lady, it started as the town and gown. and they had this business for 50 plus years, and they sold the denison stuff. and then this building kind of, when we took over, all the kids kept coming down, saying hey, i want denison, i want denison. and we didn't have it, so we said, heck, we'll do it. and it's a nice way to get them in town.
10:14 am
- yeah, yes. - so then you ended up having the real store now, so that's pretty cool. like you know, i saw these gloves over here. so these gloves, these are like $60 gloves, but they're real light, but they're real-- - yes, they're really warm, they're waterproof, they're fully, it's not breathable necessarily, but they're great for like, your car, when it's snowing, wiping 'em off, keeping you warm. they're waterproof and they're windproof, so it's great. - i love this kind of stuff. hey, i saw something back here, if you wanna catch up to me. oh this, look at this, now talk about style, huh? what's the deal with that, that's beautiful. women aren't really huge into the technical aspects of things, we've kinda learned. we like, you know, style, comfort, things that look cute. so, we do a lot of that specifically in here. - [david] see i was talkin' about those socks, they got the darn tough socks here. those are the best socks in the world. - they are the best socks in the world. they are made in vermont, they're really cool 'cause they're all merino wool, and they actually have a lifetime guarantee, so if you wear 'em out, if you put a hole through 'em, anything like that. - [david] bingo!
10:15 am
get you a new pair of socks. - [david] that's not bad. ok, we're talkin' about style. so here you got two kinds of things here. you got the patagonia, which, you can't keep this stuff in the store, i mean this is the hottest thing, right? - no, it is the hottest thing right now on the market. it's huge with the college kids, so that's why it's kinda nice that we have the denison and the patagonia together, 'cause they come down for the denison gear and then they gear up for winter, as well. - [david] walkin' to class. - [nicole] it's true, yeah. - you can't beat that. and we're talkin' about cool. you know, we're talkin' about how this stuff sells like crazy. this is gonna be the next cool thing. what's this about, canadian goose? - [nicole] this is canada goose. they are out of canada, obviously, they're 625 down fill. they're the highest things that you can use for expditions, just for walkin' around downtown, al roker wears them. - yeah, well you know, i'll tell you, you know, new york city in the winter, you know. people used to wear fur coats, now they don't like to wear fur coats anymore. this is what you see. - [nicole] exactly. - the old fur coat crowd because, they aren't giving these away, but they are super warm, and they are super cool. checkin' out the gear here, huh? so, look at this, you got the patagonia gear,
10:16 am
with just like a down vest or somethin,' like what do you wear under a down vest? - under a down vest, well it depends on where you're going and what you're doing, that's like our main thing. - [david] you could help us with that. - yes, we could help you with that. - so if i don't know anything, and i'm tellin' you where i'm goin,' you could tell me what i should buy. - [nicole] exactly. so, that's what we do here. - ok, i'm goin' to mount everest. what kind of coat do i need? - well you don't wear a coat, actually, you wear a full body suit. we call it the pillsbury doughboy suit. - [david] do you have one? - we have one. - [david] show me, where is it? is it far away? - it's upstairs, but we can grab it. - ok, we won't get to see it now, but it's-- - yeah i know, i have the boots, i could get the boots down. - i would look good in a doughboy suit. look at this. nice little shoes here, whole bunch. - [nicole] yeah we do a lot of different types of shoes, we do anything from ice climbing to rock climbing, to just your local hikes, to if you're going to the zoo or something, and you needed a good pair of shoes, we can do that too. - [david] it's excellent. - [nicole] mm-hmm. - [david] i love this. ok, i like your town, it's a cool town. - [nicole] thanks. - ok, so i was thinkin' about some chocolates, some candies,
10:17 am
as. (plucky guitar music) - goumas chocolates was actually started back in 1911. and then gus, the father of soc and greg goumas, who own goumas confections, he taught soc goumas how to make candy. and they're very old recipes that he just kind of, a lot of things weren't really written down. maybe a list of ingredients, but basically, the way to do it was hand-taught. passed away, soc brought his brother greg in, because they were so busy at the holidays, and with his father gone, soc was kinda left to do it all by himself. and greg has never left, so between the two of 'em, the brothers have about, i think it's about a combined 75 years, of candy making, they do know what they're doing, and they put out a tremendous amount of candy, especially at the holidays. i think what keeps them going is, only soc and greg make the candy.
10:18 am
'em almost 39. we do not make any of the candy. the two brothers do it all themselves, i do believe chris, soc's wife, is allowed to sprinkle salt on the sea salt caramels, but that's pretty much it. they do it all themselves, and they know the recipes, and they just do it themselves. well so many people that come in have been buying this candy for years and years, and maybe their parents or grandparents bought them easter eggs when they were kids, certain candies at the holidays such as peanut brittle generations have come into goumas's. and it gets shipped all over the country, my son lives in california, i send him candy. it's just very well known by the locals, and again, it goes back generations of people expecting goumas candy for certain holidays. a lot of people stop into goumas because they know it's here, or because they see the sign and they just say, hey, chocolates.
10:19 am
and then they just carry on from there, bringing friends and family, and it's just a wonderful place. we have several specialty items, such as our chocolate covered pretzels. you can get those in milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. also, potato chips. a lot of people have never had a chocolate covered potato chip, they are wonderful. little bit of salt, little bit of crispy. definitely a big favorite is the buckeyes. buckeyes are winning, we sell even more, but, they are popular year-round, it does not matter, everybody loves buckeyes. in our other case, we have things like turtles. these are milk and dark chocolate pecan turtles, and of course caramel inside there, one of our very best sellers. and also toffee. nobody can go home without toffee. dark chocolate, milk chocolate,
10:20 am
just last week we started this. you can get a one pound fan box, or a two pound fan box. it includes things like buckeyes, toffee, turtles, nut clusters. the box itself has a picture of downtown newark, probably the early 1900s. it also has pictures of their grandfather, their father, and soc and greg, making candy at goumas confections. they are a fourth generation candy maker, just buckeyes, or just turtles or toffee. you can have it made up any way you want. because we do specialty boxes any way you want. i've been eating this chocolate for over 20 years, and i could still eat chocolate probably morning, noon and night, never get sick of it. we love making up boxes of candy that look great, and of course taste great. i do a lot of specialty gift baskets, we have a lot of people that will order baskets for the different holidays.
10:21 am
10:23 am
honey nut cheerios get their delicious taste from honest ingredients. like real delicious honey, that's still honey. ahhh, there we go. were back to honey again. who's directing this? that guy, figures. introducing tiny toast. the tiny cereal with the big taste of real fruit. well, here we go, i've been waitin' all day
10:24 am
mebody said, just say brews, when you come in here. - yeah, that's it, that's all you need to know. - just say brews, how long you been here? - well, we've been in business for 20 years, 20 years in january. we've been in this location since 2005. - and i tell you, when i walked in, i saw all these taps all over the place, and you've got a slogan that goes with the taps, don't ya? - no crap on tap. - that's what i thought you said! (laughter) and you said you have a lot of beers on tap, but what you see in the early part of the day may not be what you see at the end of the day. ft list two to three times a day. - yeah. - we've got 51 beers on draft, and it's a constant rotation. - [david] so if you're a craft beer person, this is the kind of place you'd definitely wanna go out of your way to discover. - that's, almost everything we've got on draft is craft beer. you know, a few staples, we've got a cider on draft, and stella artois is probably our only non-craft beer. - the budweister of europe.
10:25 am
those are the things we don't, the macrobrewers, we don't put on draft. we've got it in bottles, but we don't-- - [david] i saw some great bottles back here too, i mean, some of 'em, some of the labels you can't show on tv, but i see some great ones up there. - yeah, we carry a fairly decent bottle selection. a lot of the larger format, the 22 ounce bottles. people really dig that, and, i don't know, it's probably, i haven't counted 'em for a long time, but we usually have about 150 different bottles. - that's excellent. now if i see some beers here, head on it? - [jerry] which one is that? - it says franz, - [jerry] oh my goodness. - rhinegeist or somethin' like that. - rhinegeist, the rhinegeist is out of cincinnati. - is that pretty good? - great brewery, yes, very good. - yeah, maybe i could get the young lady to pour me one of those. - you think we can get her attention? - i don't know, maybe. - i don't know. - yo, yo! - [jerry] christina! - [david] christina! here she comes! - [jerry] man needs a beer. - [david] here comes christina. can i get a short one of these rhinegeist
10:26 am
at, this place is a fun place too. i walked in, the music is great, and i looked up. what's goin' on, you can see the ceiling up there, there's another floor. - [jerry] there's a third floor, yes. - it's the tallest building in town. - it is the tallest building in town, it wasn't until 1912, that's when they added the third story. - [david] oh yeah. - but we have a separate restaurant on the third floor, which is-- - oh, here we go. - [jerry] which is called 1 linden alley, named after the alley that runs next to the building. and it's wine-centric, northern mediterranean, and spanish cuisine up there. - [david] so, i come in here, i'm havin' a couple beers down here, and i saw this big bar menu out there. i mean you got all kinds of wings, and burgers, and wraps, and salads, and three or four things that said new. i mean, it is a big menu out there. - [jerry] it's pretty good sized, and we've got, burgers are our main focus. do a lot of different burgers, they're all eight ounce, at least, we've got a couple that have, one pound. - [david] yeah.
10:27 am
- ok, so that's the first two floors, then you get up to that third floor, and that's where it's more wine-centric, that the wine-- - [jerry] wine. - [david] and the french, and the spanish, and the-- - [jerry] right, and we make all our own pasta, all our own sauces, everything's made in-house. - [david] you don't have much fun doin' this, do ya? - no. (laughter) i got a sample beer down here, and a sample wine on the third floor. - let's try a little bit of this rhinegeist here, huh? - yeah. - jerry, you're a good man. boy, that's great. - yeah. - you know what's cool about comin' here too, is, i'm seeing you could walk almost anywhere it's a great town for that. - [jerry] yeah, it is. - hey, so are you closed any day of the week? - open seven days a week. - ok, he's open seven days a week. you know how to get here, it's a great town, and if you decide you can't go back home, all the way home, how 'bout trying out a historic inn, there's one right down the street, right? - sure, right, granville inn's down the street, buxton inn's down the street. got several bed and breakfast's around that are fantastic. - great. - yeah, it's a great little town. - we're headed to the buxton. - ok cool. enjoy. - thanks jerry.
10:30 am
kids don't know how to act fake. i like your face. so we're learning to be more like them. removing artificial flavors and colors from general mills cereal. i like his face. you said you wanted to feel better about your cereal. general mills big g cereals hear you. that's why we say "yes" to whole grain as our first ingredient. and "no way" to high fructose corn syrup. so no matter what your favorite is, you can feel good welcome back to new day cleveland, i'm still david moss and we're still in granville ohio, two hours from cleveland. and we're in front of a great place here, it's called the buxton inn. this place was established in the early 1800s, and if you get a chance to look around, well, let's take a look around. let's go in and see jennifer.
10:31 am
because i came to this buxton inn, and it's like wandering through a beautiful maze of wonderful furniture, and treasures, isn't it? - [jennifer] yes, absolutely. - [david] yeah, i love this room. so, i saw a room up at the front, that looked like a dining room. - [jennifer] yes. - [david] and what happens there, like, breakfast, lunch? - [jennifer] well, it is a dining room, it's where we serve our continental breakfast to our hotel guests. - [david] so it's a hotel, also? - it is, it's a 25-room hotel. we have a mixture of guest rooms and suites. has unique furnishings. this is truly an inn where we have antique furniture, every room is different. - [david] i like everything about it, and of course the bar, one of my favorite rooms in any house, or any building. - [jennifer] yeah. - and this bar is fantastic. this is like a piece of furniture up here, isn't it? - [jennifer] yes, absolutely. this was handcrafted, by a local craftsman, back with the previous owners.
10:32 am
and the painting is a replica of a very well-known painting, and it was actually painted by a local man, and it was staged just north of town from here. - [david] i noticed there's all kinds of chains, with the chandelier here too. - [jennifer] right, so this light fixture is one of our most prized possessions here at the inn. - [david] really? - [jennifer] yeah, it dates back to the civil war time, and it was originally a gas fixture - 'cause it's got reflection in it, huh? - yes, and-- - [david] all kinds of mirrors. - [jennifer] and the idea behind that was, when the gas would lit, it would provide more light with that reflection. - [david] yeah. - [jennifer] yeah. - you know what, i was talkin' about wandering through this place, i gotta tell you somethin.' a lot of great, beautiful rooms in here, little parlors and such, and she talked about the suites and such. but i like some of your outdoor places. you've got a garden that's totally outdoors, and this one's glassed in. - [jennifer] right, we have a greenhouse that we can seat large parties in.
10:33 am
things like that. but we can also seat large parties for dining. - i gotta tell you this though. i'm talkin' out of school a little bit, but i saw her dad on the way in, when i was lookin' for jennifer, and he was sayin,' everyone who comes here to help work on the inn, to keep it up in shape, wants to end up staying here. - yeah. - they wanna end up working here. - yeah, we-- - you're gonna fall in love with it. - well, yes, we're a small, family-owned business, owner-operated here. so this place is very special, and i think people pick up on that. - when they work here, and-- - this would be a cool place to come here, just like for christmas or something, too, right, or thanksgiving, or-- - yeah, christmas, thanksgiving, new years, also mother's day. - [david] yeah. - [jennifer] we do a big fourth of july celebration, as well, because the parade goes right down broadway, the street in front of the inn. - [david] so is there any chance the place is haunted. - [jennifer] oh absolutely, absolutely it's haunted. two of the innkeepers that previously kept the inn here, major buxton and the lady in blue,
10:34 am
- [jennifer] blue like this room, she wears a long blue gown, and she lived here. she devoted her life to the inn, so she doesn't want to leave. she loves it so much. - [david] that's a little ghost whispering for you. - [jennifer] yeah, yeah. - [david] well i like that. we're sorta right on main street, too, but we're right on the end of it. - [jennifer] yes, mm-hmm, yes we are. - [david] so it's fabulous, it's like you're in the country, but you're in this little town that was put together in the early 1800s and, the buxton inn still feels like it represents. is there a place to get mexican food around here? - there is, and i would highly recommend day y noche. say hi to my friend anselmo. - he's a great guy. (jazzy piano music) - [voiceover] the food's very authentic, and it's always fresh. - [voiceover] sizzling chicken fajitas. - very fun food. with flavors, and comfort, that you know, the kids look like they get excited to come and eat, you know, and you wanna have a nice dish,
10:35 am
you're gonna see, you know, you feel welcome, with all these colors, and we have a wonderful crew working for us. they all smile and thank you for coming in and visit us. you're gonna feel welcome. - it's like a family here. i've only been here maybe a month. all the girls are great to work with, kitchen staff is very reliable. - people come in here, you know, they can bring their families, or they can bring their dates. all the way to $23. comfort food, you know, kids, from all the way to seniors. - we're a very family-oriented restaurant, and lots of people come in with their families, and their kids, and they feel welcome, and their kids enjoy coming in, and they always like to see anselmo, and have a good time. - working with my wife is a very enjoyable thing.
10:36 am
you know, takes the other half. - we have a lot of fun. we have the same goals in mind, so it's a good time. - so over here we have our very popular salad, we call it latin chicken salad. so you have your lettuce, you have corn, and chicken, and tortilla strips, garnished with pico de gallo, and it comes with creamy ancho dressing. and it's one of the best sellers in here. and then we have enchiladas suizas. that comes from mexico city. and the tomatillo sauce is made in the house, everything is made in the house. this is one of the best seller enchiladas, and then we have the dessert flan. that is a custard, people come in and get it, wintertime. i like to put just, anything in front of them, that they're gonna say, wow,
10:37 am
asure is when they send the plate, empty, to the back. i am really proud of the dishes, and everybody that works here. - [voiceover] chicken rolled corn tortillas, over a bed of lettuce, with some enchilada sauce. or tomatillo sauce. - been coming in probably twice a week, since they opened. - i think the fresh ingredients are really what does it for people. - [anselmo] come in and stop by in granville, is stop by at day y noche, have breakfast or lunch, so that way you can walk in town, and later on you can stop by for a beverage, that we make 'em fresh every day. and you know, come in and say hello to us. - and the most important thing to know is, day y noche is open seven days a week,
tv-commercial
10:38 am
it's not uncommon for autistic kids to flap their hands. and so when i saw that, that was completely disqualifying. i'm a republican, but this election is so much bigger than party. my son max can't live in trump world. so i'm crossing party lines and voting for hillary. i don't always agree with her, but she's reasonable. and she's smart. she can work with people to solve problems. i want to be able to tell my kids that i did the right thing when it really mattered.
10:40 am
10:41 am
- yes sir. a lot! (laughs) - [david] well this is a university town, so i imagine that the kids never get tired of havin' pizza, right? - [tammy] nope, they keep us really busy. - [david] that looks pretty good. i like the way you cut that, too, so there's enough for everybody, huh? - [tammy] yep. and a lot of people cut in pie shape, but we always cut in strips. - [david] ok. - [tammy] so. - i like that, ok so we're at elm's pizza, we're in granville, and i came in to look at the place, and it was really wild, and you've got pictures of cars all over the walls here. - [tammy] yes. my grandfather was a chevrolet dealer, this building. - [david] so this is the building. i was walkin' around, i saw a calendar from 1951. the coolest thing i saw on the wall was the price list with what cars cost back then. isn't that amazing? - [tammy] amazing, the corvette that was $4000? - [david] yeah. - [tammy] yeah, yep. - so you come in this place, and you sit down, and you're waitin' for your pizza, because it takes what? about 20 minutes to get a pizza? - yep, yep. - they don't mess around, they even have a sign that says, hey, relax, it takes time to bake 'em, right? - [tammy] we have to bake 'em, yep. - [david] so i walked around, and i was readin' the walls, and there were so many cool things on the walls.
10:42 am
this is a family business, right? - yes sir, yep. yep, it's an old family business, my mom started it, my mom and dad. my dad still grinds the cheese fresh every morning. - [david] yeah, your dad's in the back doin' that? - [tammy] yep, yep. - that's very cool. yeah, so everybody seems to know everybody here, and i saw this here and i saw, i think i saw her here when i was walkin' around today. - [tammy] yep, that's my mom, and that's my dad, mr. and mrs. williams. - [david] so this is sort of like the wall of fame here? - yeah, this is a bunch of kids that have worked here. lots from granville, lots from other towns around. we couldn't do it without our employees. - yeah, it's a great spot, too. i recognize this lady right? - yep, this is mrs. williams. - that's mrs. williams? - [tammy] this is my mom. - [david] this could be your sister. - [tammy] this is my sister lisa. - [david] see, i like that, this is a family business. and here in the white, you can see what it used to look like when it was a car dealership. - [tammy] yeah, that's actually the front of our building. - [david] you know, i was thinkin' too when i pulled up here. it's a beautiful little town. - [tammy] thank you! - it's a great town, but you know, like in the olden days, they used to have what, a general store, that people hung out at,
10:43 am
- we have a lot of people hang out here. yeah, which is really nice. - [david] yeah, it's a great spot. - [tammy] yeah. - so, how 'bout these kids? denison university's kids come here? - [tammy] they do. - [david] yeah? - and we deliver after 5:00, so we do a lot of delivery to denison, and i work with bob ghiloni that's the basketball coach, i work with the football coach, and, so they're great supporters of granville, and our business. - you know, we travel around the state a lot, we get to go to a lot of cool towns like granville, and you know what, so we were comin' here to see you, and it was 10:30 in the morning, and i said, o early. but you're ready to go at 10:30 in the morning. - [tammy] yep, yeah, we open at 10:30, we're puttin' an order out right now for village hall, and yep. - [david] yeah what days are you guys closed? - [tammy] we are only closed on sundays. - [david] so, ok you guys remember that, when you come to granville and it's sunday, you're not gonna get an elm's pizza. - [tammy] yep, not sunday. - [david] somebody told me a pretty cool story, too, about how when you were naming the place, you were gonna call it elm street pizza, but then you decided not to, because of the horror film elm street. - oh, hilarious, yeah. (laughs) actually, my mom's the one that named it. - is that right? - so yep, yep.
10:44 am
nse of humor, yep. - so i was tellin' people before, all the different signs you have in here, and it's really crazy too, because, i see pictures of like, about the time i was born, they look like they were ancient times. i must be gettin' pretty old, huh? - me too, don't feel bad. (laughter) - well the pizzas are fresh, and i tell ya, i saw some great sandwiches back there too. - [tammy] we do all kinds of sub sandwiches, we do french bread pizzas, we do homemade lasagna, homemade spaghetti, we cut our lettuce fresh every morning for fresh salads, so pretty much everything in here, do everything every day. - and the denison university students are welcome here. - [tammy] oh, absolutely. - and even if you're from ohio state, there it is, the big o with the buckeye. - [tammy] we're big ohio state fans, that's right. - hey, thank you very much, i had a great time here, it's a wonderful place. - thank you. - and as i was coming down the street i saw a place that looked like a bookstore. is that called reader's garden? - yes, uh huh, and it is a bookstore. yep, locally owned, really great gal. so, yep. - we'll check it out. - we really appreciate you guys coming. - ok, i'm gonna go down to the bookstore, should i take a pizza with me? - please do.
10:45 am
- reader's garden is an independent bookstore. we sell new and used books. the majority of our inventory is new, however we sell great, great used books too. we call them gently used, many of which come from our local professors, who are interested in liquidating their libraries. we live in a town of readers, here in granville. ct place for an independent bookstore. people support us at the local level, and then of course there's the denison university, i don't know if i'd be in business without denison, because we have so many people coming from all over the world, visiting, visiting their students. we've been in business for 16 years now,
10:46 am
people describe it as charming. i think it's a very charming store, it's a very small space, so i have to really be particular about what i buy. i handpick everything, i consider myself a book scout. so i will read reviews ad nauseum, i read the new york times, the la times, i get ideas from my customers. that help me select just the perfect book for my customers. we discount books 20%, hardback new york times best sellers, that is. and we have a lot of independent best sellers as well, which seem to be where our niche is. our wall words, which are featured in all sections, are quotes that i have collected over the years
10:47 am
that says "today a reader, tomorrow a leader." and i definitely believe that, i think critical thinkers are made on the laps of parents and loved ones who read to them. and i try to encourage that through a pretty diverse children's section. small, but diverse, again. i think we have the best cards in granville, actually, we represent many different card dealers, and i'm very very proud of our selection. and i don't typically buy cards that retail for more than $3.95, so you can find a good value here. we have folkmanis puppets, which continue to be popular. a local jeweler offers her beautiful creations,
10:48 am
that you might not be able to find in you know, a regular, larger bookstore. i think selling books is a noble profession. reading fills in spaces for me in a way that nothing else does. so when i have time, my friend is my book. and i absolutely am proud that i've been able to sustain life in granville, for as many years as it's been open. i think people like coming in here because we're all readers. and we can share our favorite books, not only classics, but contemporary literature, new biographies that might be out. so we really talk to people and we have a lot of fun. i think that's, it's a very spontaneous
10:49 am
(mellow guitar music) - pretty good pizza. hey, and i tell you what, if you're over at reader's garden, and you can't pick a title out for yourself, just go to joanne's section, she's got a special section with some really cool titles. and coming up after the break, more from granville. we're gonna check out some art.
10:52 am
welcome back to new day cleveland, and jeff, help me with this. it's called art at 43023? - ok, it must be a zip code, right? - it's granville's zip code. - granville's zip code, ok, and this is a cool place, folks, because these guys, well, jeff and his friends, fill up this place with some of the most beautiful stuff, from many counties around, right? - absolutely, most of 'em are local, though. - yeah, most of 'em are local. - yep. - ok, so i see some things here with your name on it, jeff watkins, here's the cottage fall. so, what's your inspiration for these, and what medium do you work in? - i work in oil, i've been painting with an artist named paul hamilton, who is a local artist here.
10:53 am
inting with him for about six or seven years, as have my two partners, leann and paula. that's how we met, and that's what generated the idea for this. - so you guys had all this art, the three of you, and rather than try to send it off to another gallery, you just sort of set up your own gallery right here. - [jeff] set up our own gallery. - in granville, which is fantastic. so you've got six pieces here, fantastic stuff. and the tough thing about coming to a great gallery like this is you wanna spend a lot of time in front of each one, right? - [jeff] correct. - we can't today, so we've gotta move on. - [jeff] ok. - so we're goin' this way. so, this looks like somethin' that maybe, ress. - [jeff] this is our pottery folks, karen and tom markgraf. and they make some great pottery, and they make sculptures, and they make all kinds of things. - [david] this is pretty wild, what do you think? what do they call it? what were they goin' for? - [jeff] i don't even know what the name of this is, it's been in here a while, and-- - yeah. - [jeff] people are interested in it. - the zebras lost their head over this one. - [jeff] it's a little bit different. - yeah, i sorta like that. beautiful pottery, which is a great thing, because herb walks around like, you know,
10:54 am
this is really interesting over here. this looks like something they could make at chateau moss, because it's all made out of beer caps, i think. - [jeff] all beer caps, this is a guest artist, that's here for this month. - [david] this is really sorta wild, isn't it? i mean, it has texture, and color. - [jeff] there's a lot of variety to it, and-- - [david] it looks like it's been enameled or something. - i told him that, if he drank all the beer that it took for this, it probably took him a while. - [david] yeah, i can understand that. these two beautiful sculptures back here in the back. give me a little wave back there. who are those guys? - that's paula coleman, and leann failor. - [david] so they're the partners. - the three of us are the partners. - [david] the co-conspirators. - [jeff] we had the idea for this. - ok, so. ok, so who did this stuff over here? - this is a gentleman named dan nepper. he's actually from wapakoneta, but he has a cousin that lives in granville, that's how he found out about our gallery. so he's a guest artist.
10:55 am
- they rotate, so if you're in here today, and you come back next month, there's gonna be a lot of different art in here. - mm-hmm. i noticed some beautiful jewelry. some are done with minerals and stones. - [jeff] right, she's a guest artist, from upper arlington, that's with us this month. - [david] where would you wear this? - [jeff] i'm not quite sure about it, you better ask-- - [david] oh, i think it's just a decoration. - [jeff] you better ask the ladies. (laughter) - [david] i don't know too much about that kinda stuff. - [jeff] these are paula's paintings. - [david] oh. she's wonderful! - yes, she is. - this is great. this is, i like this in particular. and the prices are like-- - [jeff] yeah we try to keep our prices reasonable, i mean-- - they are! - we try to keep it, it's art that people can purchase. - [david] yeah. so we saw paula's, we saw your art, did we leave somebody out? - [jeff] yeah, leann's are right here. - [david] oh, check this out. - [jeff] right here.
10:56 am
ld be great in chateau moss. sign of autumn. 'course, at my house this would be in the driveway, after the first frost, and it'd be collapsed. it wouldn't look so good as hers. (laughter) you make nice pumpkins! - [leann] thank you! - [david] it is beautiful stuff. you know what i like about this gallery too? it's not crowded, you know? it's spread out so you can really see the stuff, and-- - that's good to hear. we try to keep it uncluttered. - yeah, you could imagine this stuff in the right place. and you know, as crazy as this is, what's this guy's name again, that made this? . - you could put this out, probably in the middle of a garden somewhere, couldn't you? it looks like it would stand up to the weather. - i think it would, i think it would. - [david] poor zebras, they lost their heads. hey, terrific stuff. love granville. - thank you. - love your stuff. ladies, love your stuff. - [voiceover] thank you. - [david] thank you very much. - come back again. - [david] and once again, you might have to help me, it's art at 43023. - two three. (upbeat, thumping guitar music) - oh yeah, check it out, plenty of places in granville to visit that we didn't get a chance to visit,
10:57 am
from cleveland. and when you get here, you're only about 30 minutes from columbus, so that makes it cool, too. we've go the vintage inns, we've got all this great shopping here. i love the brew caf?, and you gotta meet jerry, because he's a pretty cool guy too. great little town, check it out, little piece of americana. started in 1800 and somethin,' and it's still cookin' in 2015, i hope you enjoy it. i'm david moss and i'll see you on the next new day cleveland.
