the bizarre case. hi, sam. reporter: hey, bill and kayla, standing on the abandoned property, toni hearne and linsey lentz are facing murder and failure to report a death charges. this is where investigators say they tried to hide the body. this happened around 11:30 when neighbors spotted a vehicle they didn't recognize on the property. the sheriff's office was called and questioned and detained both of them. other investigators were called to the scene, that's when they found the body of 71-year-old robert hearn junior. the body was covered in leaves, tires and planks. the uncle of one of the suspects. both were charged with failure to report a death, the sheriff was thankful this was called in. >> we have some excellent citizens that live in this area, that makes me feel good tht the party took time to

no one at this property, that vehicle didn't look right. reporter: no word on the cause of death at this point or where the murder took place. investigators say they'll take a closer look at the vehicle to get a better idea of what happened here. reporting in alexander county, sam smith, fox 46 wjzy. bill: sam, thank you, definitely glad the folks decided to call it in when it looks suspicious. more at 10:00. kayla: to a story you will only see on fox 46. it has to do with the five people recovering today after being injured in four separate unrelated shootings across charlotte las you can imagine, it's shaken the community and left many wondering what can be done? robin kanady found out a plan is in the works to help reach young kids to try and curb violence. hi, robin. reporter: hi, kayla. you might remember that program

it was a series of community meetings between police and community members, particularly the african-american community. well, the group that started that program is back, and now we have a new mission. you'll see it in this exclusive story. jake jacobs isn't just a barber. >> tools. you can go up to the barber and talk about anything. reporter: that's what people do with jake, including kids. >> takes a village, this is what we're pushing in the barber shop. a community village relations center. reporter: the sheriff's office has grown tired of seen violence, like tuesday night, five people shot, four separate cases, the kind of crime people say happens often. >> a whole lot more gunshots. people i know last several years, three people killed on our side of town, and hearing gunshots and things through the

nothing strange. reporter: they're trying to reach younger kids, ages 4-10. jake and a team of barbers is about to start a new initiative called literacy with a purpose. >> we're going to build bookcases and put them in the shop, let kids come in and read. reporter: they'll have trained mentors, maybe famous ones, like former nfl players to spend times with the kids, not just evaluating reading skills but finding out what's going on in their lives. >> not just paying us for a hair cut and you're gone. we want to be involved with total community involvement. reporter: letting kids know they care, hoping they'll see a different way, away from crime and violence. now let me give you an update on those four shootings overnight. police tell me they did make one arrest, but they say that suspect is not connected to any of the actual shootings, so

police say she could be heading to atlanta. she's pictured on your screen. 5'4" with blue eyes and brown hair with orange streaks in it. you are asked to call 911 if you know anything about her disappearance. bill: to another fox 46 follow-up. police documents revealing the apparent motive behind the murder of 82-year-old mother allegedly killed by her own son in 2014. irwin feldman appeared for a bond hearing. he killed his own mom in 2014. search warrants state the motive behind the murder could have been financial gain. police learned of a life insurance policy for feldman that irwin was the beneficiary of. and other family members had no idea it existed. when feldman reported his mom's death, he told officers the home was ran sacked and she was beaten. kayla: investigation is under way after a school nurse found a marijuana substance in a

rock hill police say it was found at the child development center on east black street yesterday afternoon. officers say the substance looked like a marijuana hash oil paste and did test positive for thc. nurse told officers none of the children claimed ownership of the drug. no charges have been filed. bill: pretty big news out of chester county tonight where, a detention center officer is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. that's according to arrest warrants we got our hands on today. we've been talking to deputies about what they believe happened and what's being done about it? reporter: the chester county sheriff's office tells me they had to act quickly after hearing one of their employees had sexual encounter with an inmate. dominiece white is accused of meeting an inmate in a kitchen pantry and getting involved in an inappropriate encounter. the arrest warrant states it happened on march 5th.

hold all employees it a high standard and this is troubling to find out. >> again, this was an unfortunate incident. again, once we find out about it, we jumped on it very quickly. that we had to do and did have to charge one of our law officers. reporter: white was arrested and later released. charged with misconduct in office. white has since then been fired from the job. we went by her house to get her side of the story. she wasn't home and family members did not want to go on camera, but the family believes the accusation is not true, though the sheriff's office says there is surveillance video. >> i think justice should be served. reporter: white has been work here for five years before she was let go from her position. her duties as a detention officer to supervise officers

inmates both pretrial and sentenced. >> i hope the public has faith we're going to do our job correctly. reporter: fox 46 wjzy. bill: now the sheriff's office wouldn't talk about whether or not white had any disciplinary issues in the past because this is still an ongoing investigation. however, her family says they do plan on hiring an attorney to try to fight this. kayla: still to come, controversy continues. now people across the state are weighing in on charlotte's nondiscrimination ordinance. bill: there's a growing need for spanish speaking 911 operators. you'll see how cmpd is there are two democratic visions for regulating wall street. one says it's okay to take millions from big banks and then tell them what to do. my plan -- break up the big banks, close the tax loopholes, and make them pay their fair share. then we can expand health care to all, and provide universal college education.

. bill: all right, welcome back. so it's the debate that seems to keep going, and is obviously far from over. tonight a number of north carolina residents believe state lawmakers should in fact overturn charlotte's nondiscrimination ordinance. according to a poll from wral, 36% of participants say the general assembly should overturn that ordinance. another 30% say lawmakers should let charlotte voters decide by declaring a referendum on the issue. only 27% say legislators should leave the ordinance as it is. 8% say they're unsure. the controversial part of the ordinance allows transgender people to use the bathroom they feel most comfortable. 1st.

barriers at cmpd, they are working to do. they have just four bilingual 911 operators and believe with the city's fast pace growth more spanish speakers are needed. caroline fountain is joining us with more why this is needed and how can you help, good evening, caroline. reporter: right now, when people called who don't speak english, they're left thinking that 911 dispatchers are hanging up on them. when, in fact, they're trying to get an interpreter on the line. cmpd is hoping that by bringing on more bilingual operators confusion. >> this is charlotte 911, does anyone need police, fire or . >> say i called 911 and hung up on me. reporter: spanish speakers who can't communicate in english have told police it's a

cmpd 911 has 116 operators but only four speak spanish. and when they're not available, dispatchers have to use off-site interpreters. >> didn't hang up, they're delayed until they find the other call center and call them back, once they do that it's a three-way conversation, so that takes time, and that causes the delay of the units to be dispatched to whenever they are needed. reporter: to cut down on response times and confusion with non-english speakers, the department is hoping to get more qualified bilingual applicants. >> looking for somebody who's going to bring a skill set to enhance our ability to help people. being able to speak another language will enhance the division and the department and help people when they do call in. reporter: at the rate charlotte's latino population is growing, more and more emergency calls will be made in spanish.

from 2010 to 2012, seen a 22% growth rate. that's unofficial count. more to 40, 45%. reporter: cmpd says there is a cultural barrier they have to overcome as 911 dispatchers. latinos are commonly using landmarks as a way to give directions whereas 911 dispatchers need an address in order to send out crews. live at cmpd, caroline fountain, fox 46 wjzy. kayla: thank you, cmpd says out of 982,000 calls last year, nearly 8,000 requires translator services. the application period for dispatchers will open in april. applicants have to be a u.s. citizen, be 18 years of age, at least, and have passed several job related tests. it was another beautiful day with a lot of sunshine and temperatures in the 70s and here in the studio we are

. bill: two 20-year-olds are facing charges for allegedly breaking into an area high school. cmpd says robert and vincent woke into west mecklenberg high school early tuesday morning. two of them allegedly stole hundreds of dollars worth of items including food, walkie-talkies and keys. both are charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny and resisting a public officer. kayla: nuisance newspapers are a growing problem for some living in charlotte, talking about the unwanted papers that build up in yards. the daily editions of observer including observer values,

charlotte news. many have turned to the better business bureau for help and started a petition on change.org. there's word tonight a big name industrial company will be making a bigtime investment in our area to the tune of 20 million dollars. atlas cop co is expanding operations in rock hill, the new production facility will be in the river rock area. construction is set to be complete in 2017. they develop and manufacture industrial equipment. the company has more than 44,000 employees worldwide, and 125 different locations in the u.s. >> there are new calls for more safety measures after a winthrop university student was robbed on campus. it happened behind margaretnance residence hall. several students started online petition asking campus police to make sure an emergency phone

residence hall. meeting will be held with university leaders to talk about safety issues as well as that petition. kayla: south carolina state university continues search tonight for a permanent president. board of trustees met for hours tuesday to discuss their search but no action or votes were taken. leaders hope to find a presidential candidate by may. the past president was removed by the previous board of trustees. the financially troubled school was on the verge of being temporarily shut down last year. bill: south carolina governor nicky haily wants to end taxes on military benefits. the plan would cost the state $33 million each year. opposers argue the idea isn't a good tax policy because it narrows the tax base. supporters say it will attract military retirees looking for a second job after they've earned a pension for serving 20 years in uniform. >> the chemicals that are thought to be carcinogens. kayla: it's a popular surface
