parents that you talked to are. >> reporter: both parents were so nervous they called 911. that is how concerned they were merchandise they say it is -- they were. they say it is somewhat normal because there are only two bus routes if disabled students. a couple hours on the bus is somewhat permittable but they say last -- personalitiable but they say last night, they began to panic. some students didn't make it home to 8:45 p.m. the district says the reason for the delay, the bus broke down, something they say is not uncommon. the superintendent says this is the 10th or 11th time that bus has broken down. he says they are doing the best they can to maintain their fleet with what they have but the district did make mistakes

contact roster for the bus. >> the operational aspect we have no control over. the other things we did not do a good job notifying the parents, not having the contact information. ipologize for that but -- i apologize for that but that has been addressed. >> reporter: they are putting steps in place to make sure parents will always be notified of future issues. as for the buses, because the state owns them the pressure needs to be put on the general assembly to allocate more funds so buses are better maintained or repoliced. >> we had -- replaced. >> we had time to talk about this, i want you to explain why the driver didn't know who was on the bus. >> reporter: it was a perfect storm. all of the circumstances added up to this happening. the bus driver called out sick.

because of that they had two bus routes for one driver that would have taken longer then what happened when the bus broke down, one of the maintenance guys says i can fix it on the road, he looked at the problem and said i don't think that i can. then they sent a second bus to pick them up, the handicap ramp wasn't working, so they had to get another bus. he said they only have a -- only have a certain amount, instead of having one, they had to wait for a bus to finish its route with all the other students, then come back to the shop and go to where the bus was broken down -- [ talking at the same time ] >> parents are panicking. >> parents are panicking. that is something they are addressing. there are monitors on the buses and so he said they are going to always have the rosters with the monitors. over night the rain moved through area. just about everybody saw some rain but varying amounts. the blue colors were a half inch or less. the green areas, of course, more than that. over here in lexington and aiken county, inch of rain and spotty areas of rain in sumter county. the storm system moved out, we cleared out, we saw sunshine but now we have another system through the tennessee river valley, rain into western north carolina and upstate of south carolina. we are not seeing the clouds yet but the clouds will be moving in. the storm system that brought the rain today is up in new york state, moving away. the next weather system moving to the east.

once it does we will be drying out for the rest of the week. temperatures warmed up into the 60s. 64 right now in columbia. as well as orangeburg. 62 degrees in sumter. cooler up state. 57 degrees greenville and anderson. for tonight we expect the clouds to come in and there is a chance we might see a shower. mainly north of i-20, south of i-20. won't see any rain whatsoever but that moved through quickly. and then tomorrow we will be seeing partly cloudy skies. we will clear out during the afternoon. and then as we go into thursday we will see nothing but 9. so should be nice for the rest of the week. for tonight we are expecting low temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s. 37 newberry and camden. 41 columbia. 42 st. matthews and orangeburg. tomorrow we should warm up to 59 newberry. 61 winnsboro. 62 columbia.

having a healthy lifestyle. but it is also going to give a new start to the mother. >> officials hope it will reduce child hospitalizations. south carolina is fifth worse in child poverty. well, moving our attention new another problem in the state. talking about homelessness. the last count of homeless people in our state was 5,040 home. but a new program is helping some people find jobs. the back to work program, a 5 week boot camp meant to help people find jobs and keep them. the pilot was so successful they decided to launch it again today. out of 19 people who graduated, 14 got jobs in december.

bus in sight and no word from the district, they are fed up. >> we didn't hear nothing. 7:13 p.m. my child came home from being on the bus at 2:30 p.m. >> reporter: she stood outside her home waititg for her son. the minutes turned to hours without any bus. >> i called the bus station. the transportation office. nobody answered. leave a message. they don't call back. i don't have a number for the bus driver so i am concerned. i called the school. the kids already left. >> reporter: her son and 16 other disabled students were stuck on the broken down bus without food, water or access to bath rooms. her son was one of those children. >> i come home and no child. i am scared. i don't know if something happened. i don't know if the driver got kidnapped. wow don't know. couldn't get no answer -- you don't know. couldn't get no answer.
