our guest tonight is scott hoffman. he is a professor of political science. you guys do a lot of polling come election time, correct? >> we actually do it kind of all year long. we do general population polls but when we get closer it's the voteer polls. do you guys have a poll out for tomorrow? >> we don't. i think it'll be after the election. >> there is a new poll coming this afternoon that shows the race getting even tighter. instead of donald trump being challenged by ted cruz this, shows marco rubio pulling to within three or four percentage points.

polls unless it comes from inside a campaign. most legitimate polls, for example, if you're trying to get likely voters and you're calling a people that you have a list of registered voters and you look if they've participated in the past, they are like leverts. if you don't add wireless telephone you'll missssout of new voters and trump is relying on a lot of new folks coming in. getting methodology right can be a difficult task. >> does everyone use the same criteria because we've seen so many different types of polls? there was a poll this more thanking with ted cruz within five points of trump. >> reporter: bo polls, the automated voice on the phone, it's illegal for them to call

39% of those in south carolina are cell phones only. it's illegal for them to call cell phones and they're trying to figure out a way to make up for that. sometimes they text a survey with a link. the methodology is not vetted on things like that. robo polls can fot call wireless. when it comes to screen, how do you screen people with certainty of registration? we make e re they're registered, determine certainty and then we pick a threshold of probability of participating. so the methodology is not uniform and it's ever evolving. depending on whether it's a contest like south carolina, a primary, or a caucus like iowa, the methods have to be different.
