university. someone was shot in the stomach somewhere between the theater and the student center. police said they're still looking for the shooter. >> let's go to the campus where christian schaffer has the latest. >> reporter: a lot of fear and confusion as police investigate this shooting. let me show you what's going on. as you look behind me, that is the morgan state student center off hillen road. just to the right of that on your television screen you'll see a pretty active crime scene. that is where the person, the victim in this case collapsed on to a trash can right outside the student center. there's also some clothing at the scene, which you can tell where we're standing was apparently bloody. that's outside the are a of morgan state. we've seen a number of police officers armed with riot shields enter the morgan state student

center. as you said earlier, they do not have a suspect in custody. clearly, that was part of the search for that suspect. police have not identified the victim, nor have they told us whether he was a student at morgan statement of however, students who i've spoken with say that person, who was shot just a few months before the shooting, was inside the student center and, in fact, he was in the pool room playing pool at the student center. moments later he left. students heard a loud noise, which they thought was a gunshot and came out and saw him near the trash can by the student center. that's when police responded to this still very active scene. now the morgan state police told the students who are here that they're recommending that they stay inside their rooms. there's an active search going

on for this gunman. however, it's not clear whether there's a threat, whether this is a targeted incident. they're in the sure what happened. that's what they're advising. once again, one person shot. we're in the clear how serious his injuries are. we're told he is a young man. we're in the sure he is a student. some other students say he may have been. campus and city police are coordinating their efforts trying to track down the person. one person was injured on the campus of morgan state university. i'm christian schaffer. a second person has died in our state from the west nile virus. >> the department of health and mental hygiene confirmed there's been a second death. health officials said we are halfway through of what they call the is your veil lance season. the west nile virus has spread

passed away. the harford county sheriff's department is gathering. the community came out to pay their respects for a man who was fearless on what he did to protect us. he was a gentle soul who loved his family. roosevelt leftwich on charlie's story. >> reporter: relentless and fearless. that's how they remember corporal charles licato. today surrounded by hundreds of police officers from around the region, corporal licato went on his last call. corporal licato died last week after his cruiser died on route one near con know wing go. he was the first in the door and the first to get the job done.

he remembered a man who was dedicated and caring. >> there's none more braver than charles. >> reporter: friends say he was very dedicated to his family larks bit of a practical joker, a great cook and a good friend. a childhood friend said corporal licato was spart spa -- smarkts -- smart, charismatic, driven. he became a man of principles, loyalty and honor and built a career on those principles. hundreds of officers at the church saluted him from his church in joppa to the final resting place in bel air. >> just to pay my respects to the fallen police officer, my dad was a police officer. gone a long time now, but i grew up with a dad who's a

police officer, so i know how this family feels. >> the community feel has terrible loss with corporal licato's death, a man who cared about the country he served and truly gave all. in bel air, roosevelt leftwich, abc2 news. >> corporal licato leaves behind his parents, brother, sister-in-law and two good sons. all right. let's get back to our other breaking news story. a suspected car thief is in the hospital and the police officers are off the street. this happened in the 700 block of frepg road after officers noticed a white toyota rav4 and noticed it was stolen. when he approached the driver, the suspect attempted to run him down, so he opened fire. >> we're not sure how many times

the officer fired his weapon, but at least one time at this point but we're trying to determine how many times total. >> police canvassed the area and discovered the wounded suspect lying outside the car. paramedics transported him to shock trauma. he's been placed on routine administrative leave. just one day have the officials said a gun was wrestled away from a baltimore county middle school, a student was taken into custody about joking about having a gun. the 15-year-old had been put in a timeout room when he told the staff he had a weapon, then he said he was kidding about having a gun. police were called to the school and took the teen into custody. he has been charged with disorderly conduct. the teen accused of shooting a student on the very first day of school at perry hall high school will have his bail

hearing. he is scheduled to appear before a judge at 9:30 tomorrow morning. police say gladden brought a handgun to school, assembled it and fired shots in the cafeteria, hitting a classmate. >> with all this stuff going on, we touched on this topic yesterday after the second violent incident in as many weeks and we talked about the effects it can have on a child. >> interestingly, some of the research suggests when children see news reports about an even, they think every time they see that report, it's happened again. so that actually speaks to the job of the parents and communities to limit exposure to these kinds of reports and use that exposure has a jump off point of talking about what happened. >> school officials recognize

the importance of talking to your children. it's also important to mick sure they zoo have access to weapons in the first place, always locking weapons away in the home and make sure the ammunition is stored separately. >> there's been some close calls to schools and many parties are thinking about security. that's one of the main reasons that parents give your child a cell phone. may cording to a study by pew research, 75% of kids between 12 and 17 have a cell phone, but when is the time right? >> the best time to give a child a cell phone is when he needs one, so around middle school because they have afterschool activities and when you know they're responsible enough. you want to set some ground rules in place. >> if using the phone safely is a concern, consider installing apps. they can almost limit when they will use the phone.

a deadly outbreak of listeria has sent one person to the hospital. the outbreak was traced back to ricotta cheese. this was sold between june 20th and august 9th, now if you have any of it, officials say do not eat it and throw it away right away. we're only month away from the 20th annual susan g. komen race for the cure. it is the affiliates biggest fund-raiser. this your's race is sunday october 21st. we will be there. we're going to have much more on the event and all the planning
