now wmur "news 9 daybreak". >> good morning. thanks for waking up with us on this christmas morning. i'm stephanie woods. here's a live look outside. it is nice and warm this christmas. as you know, warmer than most. it feels hardly like christmas outside. we're going to go over to meteorologist, hayley lapoint for a quick look at forecast. hayley: it's been amazing. temperatures yesterday were up in the 60's. even a few communities hit 70 degrees which is crazy for christmas eve. today will be a mild one as well. not quite as warm as that. if you are getting ready to travel, be careful of the fog. it is thick in some spots. patchy. you are down to just above a quarter of a mile in lebanon and keene. look at temperatures we got to yesterday. 66 in manchester. 69 in nashua. i've got to tell you, i know some of you didn't get in on the

concord and laconia didn't. it was all dependent on the clouds. if you didn't break out of the clouds, the temperatures weren't as warm. if you did, it was amazing. temperatures in the 30's and will continue to climb. more in the forecast coming up. stephanie: thanks. we're following a developing story out of hollis. a fire broke out displacing a family. no one was home when the first started. one end of the house was badly damaged by the flames. firefighters are still investigating. they say the fire appears to have started around a chimney. a man was forced out of his home on christmas eve after a tree crashed in to his house. the tree fell damaging the house. the home owner was downstairs at the time and was not hurt. there's no apparent reason why the tree uprooted other than the recent rain. in vermont, a historic stone hut

likely a total loss after of flame -- after a fire. yesterday morning. they had to use a chair lift and site. it was built in the 1930's near the top of the tallest peak. overnight use. it is not clear if anyone was in the hut at the time of the fire. new hampshire's highest u.n.h. professor. they fired marco dorfsman for changing evaluations of a student member. they say they should not have let him two. the arbitrator exceeded its authority and the college was in right to fire him. a corrections officer reported hearing a gunshot that

they reported seeing a white man and dark pants from the area. after three hours, no suspects were found. because of the situation, no one was allowed to enter the prison, even for christmas each visits. police chief richard kane is retire. he has served as chief for 16 years. he started his year as patrolman and animal patrol officer. his last day will be january 8th. now in commitment 2016, the presidential candidates have weeks left to sway voters ahead of the new hampshire primary. some people believe the primary might offer the most powerful opinion. that might be true in the republican field. wmur political director, josh

she hinted the tickets will be honored in a special way in the spring. she did not disclose what kind of energy she needs but called this a quote difficult time. a special item was discovered inside of a red kettle in nashua. someone donated a coin made of solid gold. it was found inside a dollar bill that said merry christmas. use it toward your good works. it is worth $14,000. another coin was dropped worth $1,200. >> there's no way to tell who put it in the kettle. i would think it would be the same giver. stephanie: the salvation army will get the coin appraised. moore says the money raised will help stock the nashua food pantry. need an extra tissue to add to

the first one that we have is over here. this is the cream cheese salsa dip that i made up. s the ingredients for it or over here. it is really basic and easy. it is a brick of cream cheese, about half or this much salsa, i throw in some extra jam mean jalopenos, and that's one i made up. it smells really good after a ski day. it is space si and -- spicy and warm. i really like the stacey's chips with them. this is a curry crab meat dip my mother used to make. it is simple as well. just a can of the drained crab meat, another brick of cream cheese, -- you can choose to use

but also win a brand new truck. the grinch has no chance of stealing christmas this year. he was busted by police in court -- dartmouth, massachusetts. they nabbed him as he tried to break in to the house. he was ordered to stay 39.5 feet away from the town. he must do community service in jefferson. doesn't pay to be the griffin. hayley: i love the story. it is a scary grinch. i'm glad they took him down. stephanie: that's so bizarre. i don't know why he was in such a grumpy mood. it is such a lovely day. not for those hoping for a white christmas. hayley: he could have worn shorts. yesterday was so warm. especially down in mass. they hit 75 degrees in boston.

we'll take you across new hampshire this morning. it is a quiet start on christmas morning. probably some of the kids just starting to get up early and wake up their parents to open up the presents. portsmouth. you can see the tugboats getting in on the action. they are looking festive. there are some clouds in the sky there too. yesterday was so warm that santa probably could have served in here. salem got to 70 degrees on christmas eve. unreal warmth. nashua got to 69. 68 in lebanon. even berlin way up north 67 degrees was the high temperature there. manchester 65. some of you are saying where was the warmth? the clouds, the fog, really hung on tight to places like concord even in to manchester, and also by the seacoast. i know a few of you from exeter to dover to portsmouth were

officials say the santa tracker was actually started by accident. stephanie: it is a cool story. 60 years ago a sears store ran a dial-a-santa add. there was a type-o. instead of the santa number, it mosted for the air command center. a colonel began receiving calls from kids asking to speak with santa. hayley: instead of saying they had the wrong number, the colonel said he was not santa, but he could track st. nick on radar. he fielded calls giving kids about santa's location. it is high-tech and awesome to see the towns and cities he's in. stephanie: it was cool seeing last night everywhere where he was. everyone has to be asleep. that's the key. that's the law. you have to be asleep before santa claus gets here. hayley: i think i heard he was in new hampshire around

this year is now facing animal cruelty charges. human remains discovered in goshen are those from a missing mother in connecticut. and a developing story out of hollis. they are trying to figure out what sparked a late night fire that displaced a family on christmas eve. as we were saying, it doesn't feel a lot like christmas outside. in fact, when i was driving in this morning, it was very, very foggy. i think rue -- rudolph came in handy. hayley: my whole family went outside in the afternoon. it was so warm we soaked it up. 66 degrees was the high temperature in manchester. salem actually hit 70. there was a game changer. the clouds and fog hung tight in concord, laconia, plymouth you see 48. such a big difference in some communities where you just didn't get the sun and didn't warm up. it is foggy this morning. we have visibilities down below a half a mile in some spots.

state. as we go through the day, partly cloudy skies. it is going to be mild with temperatures in the 50's. more on the full forecast ahead. stephanie: thanks. now back to the developing story out of the hollis. fire broke out at a home on farley road last night leaving the family displaceed. no one was home when the fire started around 11:00. one end of the house was badly damaged. the rest of the home sustained heavy smoke damage. they were able to save the kids christmas presents. firefighters say it appears to have started around a chimney. a sandown woman who lost her son unexpectedly has now been charged with animal cruelty.

>> he said she was devastated. first her son and now her animals. despite the charges, she feels she's innocent. >> i feel it is a dishonor to my son considering we worked so hard every day to make sure they had everything they needed. reporter: despite what she says, she's charged with five misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. more than three dozen animals, including horses, goats, and llamas were taken. her son collapsed as he walked to a neighbor's house to deliver cookies. the animal control officer had visited her patrol and voiced concerns. she feels she always acted appropriately. >> any time claire would say an animal needed a vet visit, i would have at the vet out. i have a stack like this of

>> she built the appropriate structures and had found homes for those she couldn't care for and was in the process of changing one horse's diet when this all came about. >> there were only two animals that had issues in the complaints. every other animal was in great condition. no, i don't feel as though i was in over my head. i willfully signed them over because i was frightened. reporter: sandown policed helped the police get all of the animals. they are now settling in but has little to say about their condition. >> some of the animals look thin. i'm going to wait for the vet report. reporter: she's confident her name will be cleared. >> if taking an animal in because nobody wants it and can take care of it so that you can

of it is animal cruelty, i don't know what the world has come to. reporter: we did stop by the animal shelter but nobody opened the door. stephanie: thank you. police haverhill, massachusetts say a report was a baby being thrown from the bridge was a hoax. a woman and her daughter reported that a man had thrown the baby from a bridge. after lengthy questioning, they determined they were lying. there's no word yet on my possible charges. vermont state police say human remains found in the town of goshen are those of a connecticut woman who has been missing since january. denise hart is being investigated as a homicide. he was last seen leaving on january 25th. her car was found on fire the next day. they are hoping the public can help them determine exactly what happened to hart.

that was traveling through the goshen area where these were found in the last year or so if they ever saw anything suspicious or anything that they think we should know about being this is the location we found these, we would appreciate a phone call. stephanie: authorities are not revealing the mother's cause of death. the u.s. marshal's office arrested another fugitive. angela kulacz was taken in to custody. authorities say she was on probation after being convicted of being an accomplice to armed robbery. a fire that broke out yesterday may be suspicious. they are investigating the cause of the fire which burned an empty log cabin. the home is owned by a bank and nobody lives there.

we have temperatures that have fallen in to the 30's. we're going to warm up again as the temperatures go up in to the 50's and close to 60 again today. stephanie: now to a developing story in nigeria. more than 100 people were killed when a gas tank ignited. they were lining up to re-fill christmas. the death toll continues to climb after violent storms pounded the south ocean. 14 people in three states were killed. kenneth moton has the latest. kenneth: holiday weather for the record books. >> we woke up to civil defense saying we had 20 minutes to leave our homes. kenneth: people evacuated to escape flood waters. from the south to the midwest,

the warm christmas. temperatures are expected to drop next week. kenneth moton were abc news, washington. stephanie: police in north carolina are investigating a deadly police-involved shooting that happened on christmas eve. an off-duty officers working at the mall heard the gunfire and responded. an 18-year-old suspect pointed his gun at the officer, stirring more panic inside the mall. >> very terrifying. i was pushing him in a stroller. he's not front, you know, i'm thinking get him out of the way. just get out of the way. stephanie: the officer shot the suspect who died. right now the officer is on paid underway. and in sports, the new england patriotses will look to continue their dominance over the jets when they play in sunday on new york.

my mom's name is irene, and she has alzheimer' s. adult daycare costs so much, i have to take my mom to work with me. eventually she' ll require around-the-clock care. i worry about what the next step is. my mom deserves the best care she can get. so i met hillary clinton. i could tell that she was moved by my story... because she teared up. being able to pay for daycare... to know that my mom is safe while i work so that i can continue to support us.
