we start with meteorologist kevin skarupa. kevin: that will lower accumulation areas -- amounts in the southern parts of the state to 1" to 4". the heaviest precipitation should be between now and 10:00 this morning. in some spots, it is 3" or 4" plus already. there are winter storm warnings posted for the potential of 6" p lus. in the southern half, we will be switching over to sleet, if you haven' t already. that will add to the already tricky commute. state. temperatures well below freezing across the board. anything falling even in mixed form is eventually re-freezing as it comes down.

not a bad rehearsal for winter driving. most schools are closed. kids are home. my family has the sleds lined up. they heard the storm was coming last night. this is not really snowmen snow or -- snowman snow or snowball snow. less than an inch on the ground here in wind him -- in windham. the commute has been heavier today than it was yesterday. speeds will not get above 45 miles per hour. we traveled down from manchester and did not get above 40. if you fall behind those snowplows that are keeping the roads clear and working in tandem shifts down the highway, you will drop down to 20 miles per hour. they create a blockade. it is all for our benefit.

plowing is the easy part. with these icy conditions, we have to be careful. in the lakes region, there are reports of freezing rain. there are pockets of freezing rain. a real mixed bag of conditions expected throughout the morning. people need to keep that in mind when planning their trips today. sean: i saw the signs are on the highways about crews pretreating the road. talk about what pre-treating does and how it works. bill: we are able to do that on the interstates and turnpike south of concord. it is a mixture of salt and water. it is laid down in conditions prior to the storm. it can dry and prevent a heart attack -- a harf dpack from forming. it takes four times as much salt to break down hardpack.

southern areas. over 6" of snow for ski country and north country. the details of the entire forecast, region by region, coming up. sean: in commitment 2016, republican frontrunner donald trump campaigned in nashua last night and lashed out against the publisher of "the new hampshire union leader." the paper ran a front page editorial yesterday by publisher joe mcquaid, with the headline "trump campaign insults new hampshire voters' intelligence" and calling trump a grown-up bully. trump fired back last night calling the u.l., a, quote, "pile of garbage." mr. trump: you have a very dishonest newspaper up here. it' s also a failing newspaper. it' s going down the tubers. i remember when this was a big paper. look at the size of this thing. if they cut it down any more, you won' t be able to find it. >> donald trump has no business running for president of the united states. it' s a free country and i guess he can, but he shouldn' t be and i told him that a year ago.

governor chris christie. two other republicans have town hall meetings scheduled in new hampshire today. john kasich plans to be in nashua and keene. and jeb bush will meet with voters in peterborough. meanwhile, democratic frontrunner hillary clinton has town halls planned in portsmouth and berlin. firefighters say a wood stove is likely to blame for an intense fire in unity last night that displaced nine people. the chief says the homeowners tried to put the fire out themselves before calling 911 and by the time they called for help and crews arrived on sawyer brook road, the house was fully engulfed. by the time the fire was out, there was nothing but some rubble. they did escape the fire safely. coming up, our storm coverage continues. be aware it is slow traveling out there.

sean: if you are planning to travel today, you could be in for some long waits and not just because of the conditions here in new hampshire. tom malafronte from the manchester boston regional airport joins us now live on the phone. good morning, tom. tom: good morning, sean. sean: how are things looking? either flight delays because of the weather -- are there flight delays because of the weather? tom: we have one cancellation. it may have been a carryover from some weather coming across the midwest yesterday, which impacted some flights going through chicago. we did see some cancellations yesterday. so far, so good. everything is on time. plan to arrive a little early. things might be a little delayed because of the weather, but

that has effectively ended the accumulation for some southern areas. it looks like we will see a couple of inches of snow mixed with sleet, the occasional freezing rain, which really is not going to help area travel. the warm spot at the coast is only 28 degrees. we will continue to see this mixture of snow and sleet and freezing rain. to the north, it is all snowfall. winter storm warnings for the northern third. central and southern areas, we go back and forth tween over four inches to five inches -- back and forth between over 4" to 5". storm tracker registering mostly snow right now. there are a lot of locations

that' s not going to help area roadways. sleet, if it happens briefly, is not that big of a deal. but when that accumulates over several hours, that' s when things start to get slick. temperatures are well below freezing all the way across the state. that warm spot along the coast, but still only 19 in rochester. one area we have been seeing rapidly changing conditions is concord. back. we have the first trace of snow, now over to sleet. a.j.: it has been sleet basically since our arrival just before 5:00 this morning. we have about 3" of sonw -- snow and another 1" of sleet. we were talking about the warm air aloft and how that causes

we are on the storm watch. the first snowstorm of the season started moving into new hampshire overnight. starting to pile up quickly. this will make for a tricky morning commute. drivers are being urged to be extremely cautious if they need to be on the roads today. some of the speed limits have been reduced out there. the northern part of the state will take the brunt of the storm. areas north of lebanon and conway could see over 6" of snow after it is all said and done. places like concord are expected to get between 4" to 8" of snow. that is switching over to sleet at this point. while schools across the state are closed for the holiday break, there are still dozens of business and town office closures today. you can see a list of those scrolling at the bottom of your screen. southern new hampshire has switched to sleet. kevin: the southern half of the

governor hassan: i want to echo what you have been saying. give yourself extra time and drive there he carefully. it has been a while since we have been tested by conditions. it is very important to be careful. make sure you brushed off your cars so your visibility is good. make sure you have windshield wiper fluid. the state has been preparing for the storm for a couple of days. we had conference calls yesterday with local emergency management folks and with all of the state department heads to make sure we are all prepared not only to keep the roads clear but to assist the people of new hampshire in any way. making sure if the weather did take a turn to be more severe and caused power outages and things like that, we were all prepared for that. the good news about this storm, while it is going to give us

sean: as this storm continues to bear down on new hampshire, one of the major concerns, conditions on the roadways. michael todd joins us live on the phone. talk a little bit about advice you have for folks who are heading out on the roads dealing with the weather today. >> the speed has been reduced to 45 miles from our on all major highways. -- 45 miles per hour on all major highways. it will be slick. you need to slow down. make sure you leave early. give crews and emergency workers extra space. sean: have you heard about any problem areas? i know some days like this we have power outages, cars off of the road. have you heard of any areas of concern? >> at this time, there have been seven outages reported, two in grant ham.

salem police say a portsmouth man crashed his car while overdosing on heroin. police say 50-year-old jeffrey morris was behind the wheel when he was found. rescue crews used narcan to revive him. after a short investigation, officers found out that 22-year-old aiyla griffin was riding in the car and fled the scene. police say she removed heroin and needles from the car. state police say they uncovered a meth lab during a search of a home in lempster. the lab was discovered on saturday at 123 south pitkin road. troopers say two people living there were arrested. 36-year-old joshua bush was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine. and 31-year-old heather davis is charged with conspiracy to commit manufacturing. a 23-year-old hampton man got a chance to meet the 16-year-old iowa boy whose life he helped save with a bone marrow transplant. kobe dicus survived cancer thanks to nick magyar' s bone marrow donation. the two recently got the chance to meet in iowa.

kevin: they will probably do some catching up as it stays all snow there. the rest of the state will be switching over to sleet at times. some central areas are going anywhere between 4" to 6" of the relation from franklin and plymouth -- we are over to mostly sleet, a little bit of freezing rain mixed in in southern areas of the state. that really does have a tendency to lower the accumulation possible amounts for some -- southern areas. you will notice that we continue to transition from the all-snow we saw during the evening and through the predawn hours over to the sleet we have been seeing for the last few hours in southern areas. that will continue to travel northward. for several areas of the state, from keene and new ipswich out to the coast -- while we have been seeing snow

of accumulation, it has been over to sleet. that' s going to make it pretty slick out there. we head out to a.j. burnett, who is out live in concord right now. still sleet there? a.j.: still sleet. it has not changed in 5:00 this morning. we had a couple cars going by. they are moving along. it is kind of greasy on the road out there. suddenly, you are driving along and you feel the back end of your car swing a little bit. if you step on the brakes too hard, you will feel the abs kick in, those of us who have the abs, and i think that is most of us at this point. if you look farther south of new hampshire, cape cod, for example, closer to where the storm is developing off of the delmarva peninsula, temperatures there have gone above freezing. it' s starting to rain down there. it has been raining throughout a

into rhode island as well. it' s going to be interesting to see how the wind, which i' ve noticed here is starting to creep up just a little bit, how much that wind will pull warmer water temperatures inland. will we see a switch-over to a rain situation, or does it go to freezing rain along the seacoast and the maine coast as well? that wouldn' t happen for another couple of hours. certainly something interesting we will be watching. kevin: you would think the warmer air with help roadway conditions. when temperatures across the board, across the state, below the freezing mark -- it' s really not going to help. 1" to 4" of a mixture of snow and sleet is also not helping. it' s going to be an extended period of sleet. the entire state is below the freezing mark, upper teens and lower 20'

central parts of the state where the snow has been coming down over the last several hours, we have been seeing 4" to 6" amounts. the north country getting going with a couple inches. nine degrees in stewartstown. 10 in pittsburg. we have plenty of warming to go here to eventually get into the low-to-mid 20' s. it takes all day to get to these numbers. the bottom line here is, through the noon area -- noontime today, we will be below the freezing mark, except for maybe right at the immediate shoreline. that doesn' t help the situation. futurecast painting a couple of locations in southeastern areas trying to get above the freezing mark around 1:00 or 2:00 this afternoon. but that precipitation has a tendency to drive down the colder air -- to drag down the colder air. the onshore breeze will bring in

later on this afternoon, we see that precipitation lighten up in various forms. overnight, snow showers up north will wither away. southern areas may have some patchy, freezing drizzle. from there, it' s a much quieter day tomorrow. the southern areas, mainly due to the change-over to sleet, lower. the northern areas could be as much as 6" to 10". it does look warmer new year' s s day. country. it is 6:53. still to come, we will have a
