hampshire remains a nice, quiet one. if you are heading to the upper valley, 89 is moving well. we are not seeing any delays on the southbound side at the bow junction with 93. 93 is a good ride from the hooksett tolls to the state line. some bridge construction in manchester later this morning will be causing significant delays. the construction will include some lane closures and motorists are strongly encouraged to seek an alternate route. if you are heading south of the border into massachusetts, 93 south is slowing. from the wzid traffic network, i' m deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. sean: thanks. it is hard not to notice the cold weather that settled in overnight. those temperatures can be dangerous for people who don' t have a place to stay. erin: a new homeless shelter is

controversy. ray brewer joins us to discuss the controversy. ray: the shelter at st. peter' s church will open tonight and it will provide 60 beds for the local homeless population. it was back in december when the concord city council voted to invest $30,000 of surplus money in the operating cost of the shelter. they also held a public hearing at the meeting, but no one spoke up. we spoke with some neighbors who are concerned that the location might not be the next choice. they also had no idea the plan was in the works and they wanted more communication from the city. >> it is absolutely essential that there be a homeless shelter somewhere in concord. the facilities need to be somewhere. in that respect, this is not such a terrible choice. ray: however, there are other homeless services available in

hands resource center. the mayor was not available for comment, however, he has said in the past that the city would have to put up the homeless expensive. reporting live, ray brewer. sean: thanks. according to the state, there are nearly 1500 homeless people living in new hampshire. families with children. manchester police are stepping up to help. there is a collection box together items for the homeless. they are looking for hats, socks, gloves, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. the collection box will be available until next friday. erin: the cold caused problems for firefighters in hooksett as ice started to build up when crews arrived on arden drive.

spread to a kitchen. the people got out safely, but they do have to find somewhere new to stay. a fire broke out in derry after -- in the boiler room of an apartment building on linlew drive. firefighters had to ventilate carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. the warming center was set up next-door because it took a couple of hours to get the heat turned back on. sean: a man accused of handcuffing and training a woman to the floor faces a list of charges this morning. 56-year-old russell holliday was arraigned on charges including kidnapping and criminal threatening. a woman showed up at the gilford police station on saturday morning, saying she had been held against her will at a home that she and holliday used to share.

>> very courageous victim. she did absolutely the right things and that is what brought a most peaceful resolution to this. sean: holliday is being held on $100,000 cash bail. erin: lawyers for the girlfriend of the former boston mob boss whitey bulger say that she will plead guilty to contempt. catherine greig refuses to talk to a federal grand jury about whether anyone else helped whitey bulger during his 16 years on the run. she is already serving an eight -year sentence. her sister got emotional after the hearing. >> yeah, i miss her. i had not just this time in jail, but the 16 years that she was gone. i did not know where she was. at one point, i told myself, i' m just going to have to say she' s dead because i can' t go on like this.

>> you want her to come home? >> yes, it wr home. ere she belongs. erin: whitey bulger is serving life in prison. relatives of some of his victims believe that catherine greig could help find some of the money he is suspected of hiding around the world. sean: a total of 32 students have been nominated by congressman frank guinta to attend one of the u.s. military academies. if accepted, they will each get a full, four-your scholarship and serve at least five years of active duty. >> going to the naval academy and being able to serve -- i want to be an engineer. >> i would like to be a navy seal. >> they represent the best of new hampshire. i wanted to honor them for their commitment to the united states. sean: the u.s. military academies include west point, the u.s. naval academy, and others. -- some very driven young

we look ahead to a moderating trend for the end of the week. erin: there are a lot of issues facing our country right now. they are all playing a role in the presidential election. sean: democrats say climate change is one of the most important issues. republicans have a different take on the government' s role. aixa: among the major issues being debated on the campaign trail -- climate change is one of the most polarizing. >> for democrats, climate change is a top issue. aixa: in august, president obama unveiled a plan to reduce carbon pollution from power plants. three months later, he rejected the keystone pipeline. >> unchecked climate change can lead to extreme weather events. progress says the time for action is now. >> there are solutions available

the door was unlocked and the engine was not on. erin: caryn mohan hartley said the driver was running about 40 minutes late and left her son in the van alone to escort another child inside. she says her son has a health problem and needs constant supervision. school officials are working with the bus company to figure out what went wrong. sean: all eyes are on wall street after a rough start to the new year. stocks tumbled yesterday as part of a global selloff and fears of a slowdown in china. the dow lost more than 275 points. markets in asia and europe suffered bigger losses. china stops trading altogether at one point. general motors is investigating a half $1 billion in lyft. the partnership could eventually lead to on demand self driving cars. for now, the company plans to

drivers can rent gm vehicles. erin: the former hilltop steakhouse in saugas, mass could reopen under new management. the owners of tuckaway tavern say they want to buy the venue. there is no actual offer on the table right now. it seems everything is going high-tech these days and that includes your refrigerator. samsung just introduced this four-door smart fridge. it includes a two-foot touch screen. you can see what is inside without opening up the door. there are speakers for playing music and you can surf the web on the door of the fridge. it is going to be the only thing you need in your home. sean: party around the fridge. crank up the tunes.

kevin: the only thing you cannot do is look at the international space station from your refrigerator. it is now going overhead if you want to run outside for a few minutes and come back inside for the extended forecast. it will be overhead in just about two minutes and then wrapping up at 6:22. we start off with the coldest start to the season. we have clear skies, but still a little bit of a breeze out there early this morning. eventually, that lightens up later tonight. single digits above and below zero. the next system really does not arrive for us until sometime around the weekend. we have some time to see temperatures moderating before we get there. we start off with the clearer skies. it will continue to rotate through through tomorrow morning before temperatures moderate tomorrow afternoon. the coldest readings are in the north country.

digits below zero. we had that little bit of a breeze. that does not set up ideal conditions. usually, you need the winds to be fairly light. without the radiation all cooling, temperatures are still a couple of degrees warmer than you would imagine. the breeze provides a little bit of a bite to the air. we are talking wind chills below zero early this morning. as we go out a little bit further, the cold air continues to rush in this morning. everything starts to moderate tomorrow afternoon. low and mid 20' s for most through the day. the winds will turn much lighter. lower range of the 20' s from the white mountains southward. we are in the single digits too

country after a very cold start to the day. a good deal of sunshine tomorrow and all the way through the end of the week. we don' t likely see an increase in clouds until friday evening. by the time we get there, we are talking highs in the 30' s. by the time we get there, we are looking at the next system trying to arrive. we could have a couple of showers. we could have rain showers or snow showers depending on the time that it arrives. on the light side, as far as that is concerned. i temperatures this afternoon in the teens to the lower range of the 20' s. we have a couple of light showers on saturday and a couple of rain showers by the time we get toward sunday afternoon or sunday night. it looks like we start to get into a little more active pattern. anything could be active considering the past eight weeks. [laughter] erin: a man broke a record that many considered unbreakable. sean: ultra endurance cyclist kurt searvogel spent the last year riding over 200 miles per day. he broke the record setback in 1939 by a man from england. he said he set out to break the record because so many people said it would be impossible. i can only imagine the shape he is in now. erin: the previous record was set in 1939? sean: they took a while. nobody wanted to bike 200 miles per day. it was just dropped on the community at the last minute. ray: the area is already home to the friendly kitchen and the homeless resource center. >> because all three of those facilities are so close to one another, the idea is that there might be a congregation of homeless people roaming around this neighborhood, essentially operating their entire day here. ray: we try to talk to concord' s mayor last night, but he was unavailable for comment. previously, he has said that they would have had to put the homeless up in hotel rooms without this shelter, which would be extremely costly. erin: we are following a developing story out of vermont. firefighters from new hampshire are helping to battle the fire at the putney paper company. the fire started shortly after 3:00 this morning.

injuries and no reports on the extent of damage. sean: fire officials in gorham say improper disposal of wood fire -- wood stove material is to blame for a fire that broke out on hitchcock drive. when crews arrived, they see they saw flames coming from a dent in the roof. the house sustained a lot of smoke damage. a family of three was home when the fire started. the family had just replaced the batteries in their smoke detector and was able to escape with their cat, but they are now homeless. erin: several presidential candidates continue to stop in new hampshire ahead of our first in the nation primary. jim gilmore, donald trump, john kasich, jeb bush, carly fiorina, chris christie, and rand paul will be in the granite state today. you can check out their schedules by heading to wmur.com . sean: we now know the name of

i-93 in sugar hill last week. 64-year-old ervin powell of littleton. he was driving south when he lost control, crossed the center median, and hit an suv on the northbound side. the other driver suffered nonlife threatening injuries. manchester police say a noise complaint at a hotel led to two people being arrested on drug charges. 31-year-old richard acker was arrested on two counts of possession of a controlled drug with intent to distribute. he had 19 grams of crack cocaine and 18 grams of heroin in his possession. his girlfriend was also arrested and charged with possession of a controlled drug. erin: keene police are issuing a warning about an extra potent batch of heroin that has already

it is called "hollywood heroin." it recently killed five people in 48 hours. it is coming into massachusetts from mexico. police in springfield seized 9000 bags of heroin with the hollywood stamp. drug overdoses reached record numbers in two of new hampshire' s biggest cities last year. most of the overdoses were attributed to heroin and other opioids. emergency crews responded to 722 overdoses in manchester. in nashua, authorities responded to 246 overdoses. about 400 people died from overdoses in 2015 in new hampshire. sean: top elected officials and presidential candidates will discuss the drug crisis in manchester. governor maggie hassan, senator jeanne shaheen, and senator kelly ayotte will also be cut

as five days. troopers noticed -- set a passerby noticed the wreckage on saturday in gardner. police believe the accident happened the previous monday. sean: a group of armed protesters continue to occupy a wildlife refuge in oregon. they want authorities to look into claims that local ranchers had been intimidated by authorities. ammon bundy, the son of cli ven bundy, told reporters that two ranchers who faced prison sentences for setting fire to federal land have been treated unfairly. those ranchers turned themselves in on monday, but the protesters are still refusing to leave. president obama said the fbi is monitoring the situation. erin: a car salesman in texas went through a terrifying ordeal after he was kidnapped at

two men shoved to the salesman into the trunk of a dodge challenger. when the car sale -- when the car came to a stop, he saw his opportunity to escape. >> he was able to open the trunk with the emergency latch. they tried to put him back into the trunk. he was able to get the pistol away from one of the suspects and shoot one of the suspects. when they found the stolen car, police said the suspects led them on a chase and crashed the car. they escaped on foot and are still on the loose. sean: the massachusetts supreme court said that the state welfare agency acted legally when they denied the request of a couple to become foster their own kids. they said they used corporal punishment in accordance with their christian faith, but they said they would not spank any foster children.

university of washington shows the plan to make school lunches healthier is working. the study looked at more than 7000 middle and high schoolers in washington state. researchers found that students are getting more vitamins and minerals in their meals and at school. meal participation did not change and researchers say there is no evidence that students are throwing away more food. sean: switching gears to sports, the celtics were in brooklyn, where they earned a series split with the nets. brooklyn won first game in boston on saturday. last night' s game was a big one for jae crowder. he finished with a career-high 25 points. boston went on to win the game. they host detroit tomorrow. erin: tom brady had an mri on his injured ankle and it turns out it is just a sprain.
