now wmur news 9 at 5:00. german investigation is under way tom: the fire broke out on ten rod road this morning, killing one man. jennifer crompton is live at the fire department there now with more. reporter: the home is located in a wooded rural area of farmington near the rochester border. the call came in about 9:27 this morning, and though crew the scene as quickly as they could, it was too late for one man who was living there. it's believed that the blaze started on the second floor. the fire chief confirms that it was the police chief who was first on the scene, he tells us that three people were outside when he got there, including one

someone told him a fourth person, a man, had gone back in, so he entered the home, searched the first floor, and while the deputy checked the basement, he headed to the stairs. >> i went up onto the stairs of the second floor, but it was just too hot and too smoky and i wasn't able to go any further. we were yelling and trying to get someone to come to us if they were able, but unfortunately we didn't get any response and were driven back by the heavy smoke and the fire. reporter: though no cause has been confirmed, the fire chief says it's a time and a point to remind people to have their heating apparatus and smoke detectors checked and to get out of a fire and to stay out. for now live in farmington, jennifer crompton, wmur news 9. jennifer: two people went to the hospital after a fire on elm street in laconia this

fire officials say a man suffered burns and a woman suffered smoke inhalation. two cats also died in this fire. officials are investigating but believe it was accidental. and they think it started in a light fixture. tom: granite staters have been displaced in at least five separate fires over the last 24 hours alone. firefighter dealing with these bitterly cold temperatures right now, even southern new hampshire fell into the single digits, but chief meteorologist mike haddad says things are about to warm up a bit. mike: they certainly are. by tomorrow afternoon we're at or above average again. but right now very cold. take a look at where we started the day, four in concord. keep in mind the previous low so far this season had been 16. so well below that. but really not all that cold compared to the average of about 10 or 11. it did dip below zero in the upper valley. just a bit above zero along the coast. highs today recovered a little,

central southern new hampshire. teens to the north and west, still about 5, 6, 7 below the average for this time of year. right now we're single digits north and teens and 20's elsewhere. tonight another frigid one. so how much warmer will it get starting tomorrow, and what about any changes by the end of the week and the weekend. we'll look at all of that straight ahead. jennifer: manchester police say a 65-year-old woman pulled out a concealed weapon on a man that she says followed her to her apartment complex, and as he tried to grab her she shot him in the chest. tonight he's been charged. suzanne roantree has the latest developments in this case. reporter: it was just after 11:30 last night, manchester police say a 65-year-old woman left her work and stopped at the mobil on the run in south willow street. as she drove away she noticed a

police say the woman became concerned as the car followed her into her apartment complex on south porter street. she hoped the car would drive away, but instead it parked close to her and as she got out the man ran past her and blocked her path. as the man attempted to grab the woman, she pulled out a handgun and shot 23-year-old michael range. she then ran into the building and called 911. a woman in a dark sedan picked up bontaites and put him into the car. a few minutes later he showed up at the elliot hospital emergency room. reporter: she has a valid concealed carry permit through the manchester police department, as you know new hampshire is different than most states. a concealed carry permit has to be authorized by the chief of police, the local department, where you reside, and of course a background check is conducted and we make sure that people are fit to be armed.

nonlife threatening injuries was charged with robbery and arraigned at the elliot hospital. tom: president obama got emotional during his press conference today, laying out executive orders on gun control. as sally kidd reports, the new measures focus mainly on boosting background checks for gun buyers. but part of this plan will need congressional approval. reporter: president obama teared up as he recalled the 20 children gunned down in sandy hook elementary school. >> every time i think about those kids, it gets me mad. reporter: now he's taking action. the center piece of his planned expansion in background checks. president obama: anybody in the business of firearms must get a license and conduct background checks or be subject to criminal prosecutions. the board of selectmen approved the anonymous oh donation of several bush master m-4 rifles. the department eliminated long rain firearms two years ago after a suspect was shot and killed during a drug bust. but chief kelly tells us people realized officers didn't have the right tools in case of an active shooter situation. the chief says the guns won't be used right away. first every officer will complete a nationally certified training course. the town scutted attorneys to make sure the donation was legal under state law. jennifer: right now a number of presidential candidates are campaigning here in new hampshire, and several of them spent this day talking about the granite state's heroin epidemic and proposals they have to deal with the crisis. mike cronin live now from where this forum on addiction was held. reporter: five presidential

talking about what they would do to address addiction if elected. the forum was held at southern new hampshire university. local and state leaders also spoke as well as people who work in treatment and prevention centers. presidential candidates offer different solutions to curb addiction. family. it all starts with getting to those kids that at a very early age. it's protocols, it's busting the dealers, it's having money for rehab, making sure you free up resources at the local level. all these things should be done at once. >> i think that's where government resources have to be moved. we have to take them out of the corrections area and move them to the treatment area. we're still going to be taking care of people, just in a different way. reporter: other candidates also spoke this afternoon as well as people who lived through addictions, some powerful stories there. 6:00. mike cronin, wmur news 9.

tom: two coaches derailed on the back of the haverhill line, no passengers were aboard at the time, but the derailment forced the passengers onto a bus line between lawrence and an andover and contributed to long delays. >> was supposed to be in 8:30, won't be there until probably 10:00. >> it was like just feel a, great, here we go again. tom: investigators are looking into a track failure as the possible cause of that derailment. last year winter weather contributed to days of delays for passengers. here in new hampshire at this time of year, many people are preparing their bob houses or already have them set up. this year we're still waiting for the ice to form, though, and what does this week's cold mean for those conditions? let's go to meteorologist josh judge. josh: we spoke with new hampshire fish and game and say they say nowhere in new hampshire is safe. about an hour ago i took some snapshots of the lakes in our

weirs beach, as can you see, no ice whatsoever. take a look at the other side over at alton bay, no ice either. lake winnisquam, any ice? no. also newfound lake is completely free of ice. we went up to northern new hampshire, here's the first connecticut lake, can you see that it's covered over some, but certainly some spots where it's very thin. and one more back lake in pittsburgh, this one also is iced over with some snow. so you don't know how thick it is, of course the snow can really be something that masks that. so there's a lot of variables in trying to determine how fast ice will melt or not, or freeze. certainly inlet's and currents are something that has a lot to do with it. the water is in motion, it won't be freezing very quickly. the amount of sunshine or clouds which could melt or help freeze it, the amount of wind and speed of the wind when it blows

from freezing. and objects in the water, in the ice obviously can break up that ice as well. so according to all the experts, if you're going to have just a couple of people out there, you need at least four to six inches of ice. more than that, for a small group of you need six to even inches, and 8 to 10 inches of ice if you're going to have a snowmobile. and nayed avision you to take an auger and cut a hole and measure how much ice there is as you go along. so certainly nothing quite ready just yet. will that continue or will the temperatures be warming up? mike haddad has more on that. mike: yes, josh, and when you look at the temperatures and you look at the wind and everything else that's been going on, wind really not helping matters because it's been quite active a good part of the day. and the winds go a little later tonight, so we may start to see a little ice forming out there during the next 24 hours. but by this time tomorrow, we're spots. you're looking at time lambs in

where it was a dry, bright chilly one. but temperatures did recover back into the mid to upper 20's in parts of southern new hampshire. only teens to the north. right now back into the single numbers in berlin and whitefield. five atop mount washington. while that's very cold, it's not all that frigid for over 6,000 feet up, indicating that the air mass is already starting to warm a little bit. so these are the coldest temperatures you'll see for this hour of the day, through this upcoming weekend. the temperatures are heading higher again. but for tonight, some of the sheltered valleys up north, single digit, below zero or a valley. five or six above in the lakes region, about three in concord. nine or so in nashua and about 10, 11 or 12 along the coast, region. speaking of cold the arctic chill is ready the retreat so it's more seasonable back to the west. that means temperatures will run well above where they were today, tomorrow, right through

over the weekend. so here go the temperatures again, cold air retreats, more seasonable and pleasant stuff for tomorrow, thursday, friday and even into the weekend. speaking of which by later saturday night and sunday, big chunk of arctic air will approach and cover a good portion of the midwest and the western great lakes. monday and tuesday it arrives preceded by a weak system with a couple of snow or mixed showers on saturday. and maybe some rain in many spots on sunday. but the here and now showing clear skies and with lighter winds tonight temperatures will bottom out as low as they have been at any point this season and very close to where they were this morning in some spots. tonight again, clear skies, very cold, on average. single digits below zero north, about 11, 12, 13 at the coast. single numbers above elsewhere. temperatures back above freezing, not only wednesday with lots of sun, into thursday with bright skies as well,

car, and rushed her to the hospital. she was cold butnhur u police are still looking for the car thief who apparently jumped into the vehicle and drove off while the girl's mother was standing just a few feet away. can you imagine. all right. a young woman who was carjacked and kidnapped in pennsylvania is speaking out about her terrifying experience. jennifer: 23-year-old rachel stevenson's escape was caught on camera. police say r. chambers jumped into her car as she was fill it with gas and kidnapped her. rachel says she struggled for two hours to keep calm. >> several times i said, you know, i can get out right now, i will not call the police, can you keep myhone p i won't say anything, and he said no, you're my hostage, they won't shoot a young black kid in the car if there's a pretty white girl inth passenger seat. jennifer: when they stopped for gas she was able to get away.
