announcer: no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, new 9 wmur daybreak. erin: good morning. it is freezing out there. sean: if you liked yesterday, it is pretty much the same thing. kevin: temperatures by the afternoon above normal. looking at the end of cold air, a 48 hour stretch of temperatures below the average. we head above it for the foreseeable future. starting off in the single digits above and below zero. in a lot of locations we are not as cold as yesterday. high temperatures this afternoon in the 30' s to near 40 in a couple of southern locations later today. more on the forecast in a bit. let' s look at your morning ride.

it could take days to confirm the claims and many experts are , questioning the claims but governments around the world are already condemning the action. did detect seismic activity near a known north korean nuclear wmur' s reid binion is following the breaking developments. r s ability to develop a really effective weapon, a warhead increases. , reid: mike chinoy, of the us-china institute, laying bare the seriousness of what north korea says was a successful test of a hydrogen bomb. the reclusive regime released a statement defending the test, reading in part, the dprk' s access to h-bomb of justice, standing against the u.s., the chieftain of aggression, is the legitimate right of a sovereign state. a televised announcement of the test was followed by images of north korean leader kim jong un signing the order for it. the test could take days to confirm, but u.s. officials say they are aware of a seismic event in the vicinity of a known

the u.s. geological survey says the event measured 5.1 in magnitude. it also set triggered a series of condemnations from regional leaders including south korea , and japan. if confirmed, the test would be a big step forward for north korea' s military ambitions. a hydrogen bomb is more powerful than the plutonium weapons pyongyang used in previous underground nuclear tests. jasper kim, of the asia-pacific global research group, says the real goal is more attention from the west. >> what north korea really wants is a conversation, recognition, and respect from south korea, but even more from south korea, from the united states. reid: i' m reid binion, wmur news 9 daybreak. sean: we will follow that story through the day. here at home a woman who shot a , man she says tried to grab her and rob her is speaking out. erin: the 65-year-old woman pulled out a gun when something went wrong on her way home from work in manchester monday night. wmur' s ray brewer is live this morning with the would-be victim'

ray: the woman does not want to be identified but says a car , followed her into her apartment complex on south porter street late monday night. >> 10 feet from the front stairs -- that' s when he caught up to me. and he came around me and stood right in front of me, right in my face. ray: the woman, who does have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, says she pulled a gun out of her purse and put it in her pocket. then she says the man yelled at her and she got scared and defended herself. >> but then when i saw him reach his left arm out to try and grab me, that' s when i pulled the gun out and i shot him. as soon as i shot him, he immediately fell to te ground. ray: police say the woman shot 23-year-old michael bontaites in the chest. another person in his car took bontaites to the hospital. he was arraigned yesterday from his hospital bed on a charge of robbery. another person in the car was also charged.

first time she had ever fired her gun. reporting live in manchester, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: all right, thank you. repairs are underway at a dental office in nashua after a car crashed into the side of the building yesterday. police say an 88-year-old woman hit the gas instead of the brake and rammed into the outside of the reception area. three women working inside heard the collision and had to scramble out of the way. >> there was a big, big bang and we really didn' t know what was going on. we thought it was an earthquake or i thought it was an earthquake or something and then i started to see the wall falling. erin: no one was hurt. city officials have checked the building and say there is no structural damage. the dental office is open for business. sean: state lawmakers are going back to work in concord today session of governor maggie hassan' s term. the house will convene at 10:00 this morning and the first major issue facing the chamber is how

sean: look at the video here. a series of storms is lining up to drench california with as much 15 inches of rain predicted over the next two weeks. the storms are fueled by an especially strong el nio and there are serious concerns for flooding and mudslides. despite the predicted heavy rains officials say the water , deficit in california is so deep following years of drought that they would need storms like this for years to recover. a town in ukraine is facing another very dangerous problem , no heat. more than 100,000 people on the frontline with russian rebels are without heat and gas after the supply was cut off on sunday. high temperatures yesterday were around 12 degrees and 5 heating stations have been set up. officials hope to have the gas supply restored by the end of the week. erin: for the second year in a row, malicious acts caused more airline deaths last year than accidents.

it will be with a light breeze out of the southwest direction. we stay in the 30' s. a risk of a passing snow or mixed shower saturday. the next system that arrives sunday likely will be warm enough that it would be mostly rain with a little bit of a mix in the sheltered valleys. looking at clear skies across the area. a light wind allowing for radiation of cooling. the heating of yesterday escapes into space. yesterday there was a breeze which kept mixing the atmosphere up and did not allow us to cool to levels we could have gotten too. temperatures from the lower and mid teens close to the shoreline. a lot of single digits. the areas that get colder like concord, lebanon and, plymouth down in the single digits. several areas in the north

flow will be out of the west and southwest, different from the wind out of the north. that starts to change the air mass as it continues to moderate. later this afternoon, highs in the 30' s. for a lot of locations, along and south of the white mountains, we should be above freezing and pushing 40 in a couple southern locations today. full sunshine and mostly clear skies. not quite as cold tonight but there will be some single numbers and teens up north. teens to lower 20' s in southern areas. sunny skies tomorrow. extra clouds friday, partly sunny with temperatures in the 30' s. over the weekend we see clouds move in later friday night and into saturday. saturday, the chance of a passing shower will get into sunday. the next system with low-pressure moving through the

a musician put on a very special performance in new york' s times square this week. erin: laurie anderson called it a concert for dogs. canines were given priority seating right next to the speakers. the music was performed at a low, dog friendly frequency while people had to use wireless headphones to listen in. anderson performed a similar concert years ago in australia. sean: good to see the dogs came coats. many people make snow forts during the winter, but maybe not like this. erin: the annual harbin international festival just opened in china featuring massive and elaborate snow and ice sculptures. the centerpiece this year is a 167 foot tall castle that is set to break the record for the world' s largest and highest snow sculpture. millions of people check out the festival each year. looks so awesome when they light them up at night.

from the wzid traffic network, i am deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. sean: now to that breaking news we' ve been following out of north korea. erin: the country is claiming that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. the news is drawing international condemnation. and today, the u.n. security council is planning to hold an emergency meeting on the issue. nikole killion is in washington this morning to tell us how the white house is reacting. nikole: the white house says it can' t confirm north korea' s nuclear test. but it notes the u.s. is aware of seismic activity on the korean peninsula in the same area where other tests have been conducted. the reported quake registered as a magnitude 5.1. pyongyang made the announcement on state television that it successfully conducted a hydrogen bomb test underground after its president signed an order. >> what north korea really wants is a conversation, recognition and respect from south korea, but even more from south korea, from the united states.

>> got to get into the hospital. ray: the car then sped off and the alleged victim ran into the building, calling 911. as officers were responding another manchester police , officer identified bontaites as he entered the emergency room at elliot hospital. bontaites was arraigned at the hospital on a robbery charge. the friend who took him to the emergency room, 30-year-old zachary boyd, was also charged with being a felon in possession of a knife. reporting live in manchester, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: thanks. fire officials are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in farmington that left one man dead. the flames broke out yesterday morning at a house on 10 rod road. when the police chief arrived on the scene, he says 3 people, including at least one child, were standing outside. they told him that someone went back into the burning house and had not come out. >> we were yelling and trying to

unfortunately we didn' t get any response and were driven back by the heavy smoke and fire. sean: a man' s body was later found upstairs, where it is believed the fire started. at this time, the victim' s name is not being released. erin: state leaders, presidential candidates and treatment advocates gathered in manchester yesterday to talk about curbing addiction in new hampshire. the forum on addiction and the heroin epidemic was held at southern new hampshire university. among the activists who attended was kriss blevens. her stepdaughter, amber, died in 2014 after overdosing on heroin. today blevens is bringing her story to washington, d.c., where she and her husband will speak before congress. >> she was one of the more 300 lost that year and i' ve become a voice and an advocate. her life, her death, and her vibrant spirit now speak through me to help those who cannot speak for themselves anymore.

the hours of a recovery center in amber' s name to 24/7. but in order to do that, she needs funding for overnight staffing. sean: the suspect in a hit and run in farmington turned himself in after seeing our story on news 9. 22-year-old tyler emery is accused of dragging a woman 40 feet and running over her with an suv. the incident happened sunday night at the beaver pond camping ground. the victim says emery offered to drop off cigarettes to her home, but when she opened her wallet to pay him, he grabbed it and drove off, dragging her and running her over. he is now charged with robbery and reckless conduct. erin: two people suffered minor injuries when a pickup truck collided with a school bus in campton yesterday afternoon. the accident happened at the intersection of routes 49 and 175. witnesses told officers the truck was turning left when it crossed into the path of the bus. no students were on board. sean: there was not a single dry eye in a pembroke classroom yesterday when a first-grader

kevin: another cold start. temperatures in the double digits below zero across parts of coas county. in the valleys, near or below zero. with full sunshine and a light breeze with most areas above freezing. sean: president obama was tearful and frustrated as he outlined executive actions regarding gun control yesterday. erin: the president wiped away tears as he talked about the children killed in the shooting at sandy hook elementary school in connecticut. he announced a 10-point plan that includes expanding background checks requiring all , gun dealers to be licensed. overhauling the fbi' s background check system and increasing the , use of mental health

president obama: each time this comes up, we are fed the excuse that common sense reforms, like background checks, might not have stopped the last massacre or the one before that or the one before that. so, why bother trying? i reject that thinking. erin: the national rifle association says the president' s executive actions are, quote, ripe for abuse and would not shootings that he mentioned during his announcement. sean: those new gun control measures are not sitting too well with some new hampshire gun owners. the u.s. attorney in new hampshire says law abiding gun owners have nothing to worry about. he says authorities will be taking a close look at unlicensed, unlawful sellers. but some gun owners say they are not so sure it will keep guns out of the wrong hands.

freezing cold car. officers say a woman heard the baby crying from a car that was parked at the wrentham outlets. she called 911 and by the time police arrived, the mother was back at the car. the 27-year-old mom told the officers she left her baby boy alone for about 10 minutes. she also said she was confused about the laws regarding leaving a child unattended in a car and that there was a language barrier. >> we' re not experts on cultures but most of us are parents and i think regardless of where you are from it should pretty much , be instinctual that you don' t leave in the car in extreme temperatures of any kind. sean: the baby was taken to the hospital as a precaution. his mom is now charged with child endangerment. erin: a california company will have to pay a 2 million-dollar fine fine for claiming it can improve your brain function. the luminosity app was also billed as a tool to fire up academic performance and fight

but the federal trade commission says the claims mislead consumers, because there is no science to back them up. lumos labs will now have to give customers an easy way to end not have to admit any wrongdoing. sean: in sports this morning, the bruins took on the washington capitols at the garden last night. the bruins came in with 4 losses in five games. this was the 150th all time game between these two teams. in the second period, adam mcquaid was slammed in to the boards by zach sill. no penalty was called. mcquaid had to be helped off the ice and did not return. also in the second, the capitols scored on a power play, putting washington ahead 2-0. boston got a couple back a couple minutes later but the bruins came up short and the capitol ended up winning it 3-2. that makes five losses in six game for the b' s. this is the first time that has happened in almost six years. erin: attention unh hockey fan,s the wildcats' schedule is about to get really tough.
