the breaking developments. >> with each nuclear test, the north' s ability to develop a really effective weapon, a warhead increases. reid: mike chinoy, of the u.s.-china institute, laying bare the seriousness of what successful hydrogen bomb test. the reclusive regime released a statement defending the test, s access to h-bomb of justice, standing against the u.s., the legitimate right of a sovereign state." a televised announcement of the test was followed by images of north korean leader kim jong un signing the order for it. the test could take days to confirm, but u.s. officials say they are aware of a seismic event in the vicinity of a known nuclear test site. the u.s. geological survey says the event measured 5.2 -- 5.1 in magnitude. it also set triggered a series of condemnations from regional leaders including south korea and japan. a big step forward for north s military ambitions.

and rammed into the outside of the reception area. three women working inside heard the collision and had to scramble out of the way. >> there was a big, big bang and we really didn' t know what was going on. we thought it was an earthquake or i thought it was an earthquake or something and then i started to see the wall falling. erin: there' s some damage to the building but thankfully no one was hurt. city officials have checked the building and say there is no structural damage. the dental office is open for business. sean: state lawmakers are going back to work in concord today for the final legislative session of governor maggie hassan' s term. the house will convene at 10:00 this morning and the first major issue facing the chamber is how to deal with the drug and opioid crisis in new hampshire. several recommendations did emerge from a special session that started in november. they will also discuss whether to continue the expansion of medicaid. the next few months under the golden dome could also be interesting as several lawmakers

sean: it seems that donald trump is quite a divisive figure on the other side of the pond. britain' s parliament will debate an online petition later this month calling for trump to be banned from britain for what supporters call hate speech. nearly 570,000 britons have signed the petition. about 40,000 have signed an opposing petition calling for him not to be banned. british lawmakers are required to consider for debate any official petition that reaches 100,000 signatures. erin: thanks to the cold weather this week, mcintyre ski area in manchester is finally opening today. the mild temperatures in december forced them to push back opening day by more than a week. but they have been making snow and the slopes will be open today from 3:00 until 9:00. >> we' re just really excited to have all of our season pass holders and guests to come and enjoy the white snow and get out there and ski and ride and tubing will be following up in a

all ski lessons at mcintyre will start this weekend and the after school program will begin next week. delayed by a week with milder temperatures, they have not been able to make snow. kevin: it is tough to kick in winter full floors consistently all the way. it needs a gradual process. still out there early this morning. we start to moderate and by midafternoon, a lot of areas will be above average. normal average high around concord between 30 and 32. around 35 or 36 later today. expecting sunshine across the area and a light wind out of the west and southwest direction as opposed to the north of late. so that means the cold starts to give way later. we continue to stay with temperatures in the 30' s through the end of the week and into this weekend where we will have

hydrogen bomb. the news is drawing international condemnation. and today, the u.n. security council is planning to hold an emergency meeting on the issue. nikole killion is in washington this morning to tell us how the white house is reacting. t confirm north korea' s nuclear test but it notes the u.s. is aware of seismic activity on the korean peninsula in the same area where other tests have been conducted. the reported quake registered as a magnitude 5.1. pyongyang made the announcement on state television that it successfully conducted a hydrogen bomb test underground after its president signed an order. >> what north korea really wants is a conversation, recognition and respect from south korea, but even more from south korea, from the united states. nikole: south korea called the test a grave provocation and the united nations plans to hold an emergency security council meeting later today. in washington, i' m nikole killion, wmur news 9. erin: manchester police say a woman fought back against a would-be robber by shooting him in the chest. sean: the 65-year-old woman was on her way home from work monday night when she says a man, a

her. that' s when she pulled out her gun and opened fire. ray brewer joins us live in manchester now. and ray, is there any word on the condition of the suspect? ray: police are telling us the suspect suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his chest and was arraigned yesterday afternoon from his hospital bed. this all began monday night when the alleged victim says a car pulled up quickly behind her at a stop light. >> i just got a weird feeling. ray: a 65-year-old woman, who did not want to be identified, says she left work just after 11:30 monday night stopped at a gas station on south willow street and then started driving home. she says a suspicious car followed her into her apartment complex on south porter street. and stopped close by to where she parked. >> someting in my head said to take the gun out of my purse. ray: with her hand on the gun in her coat pocket, she headed

looking behind her, she saw a man following her. >> 10 feet from the front stairs that' s when he caught up to me and he came around me and stood my face. but then when i saw him reach me that' s when i pulled the gun , out and i shot him. ray: the woman does have a valid concealed weapon permit. police say the gunshot hit the suspect, 23-year-old michael bontaites, in the chest. >> as soon as i shot him, he immediately fell to the ground. ray: a woman who was one of the people in the car bontaites was riding in picked him off the ground while yelling at the 65-year-old grandmother. hospital. ray: the car then sped off and the alleged victim ran into the building, calling 911. as officers were responding, another manchester police officer identified bontaites as he entered the emergency room at elliot hospital.

charged with robbery. another person in the car he took him to the emergency room was arrested, zachary boyd, charged with being a felon in possession of a knife. reporting live in manchester, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: thanks. fire officials are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in farmington that left one man dead. the flames broke out yesterday morning at a house on 10 rod road. when the police chief arrived on the scene, he says 3 people, including at least one child, were standing outside. they told him that someone went back into the burning house and had not come out. >> we were yelling and trying to get someone to come to us if they were able, unfortunately we didn' t get any response and were driven back by the heavy smoke in the fire. sean: a man' s body was later found upstairs, where it is believed the fire started. at this time, the victim' s name is not being released. erin: state leaders, presidential candidates and treatment advocates gathered in manchester yesterday to talk about curbing addiction in new

the forum on addiction and the heroin epidemic was held at southern new hampshire university. along with activists who attended was kriss blevens. her stepdaughter, amber, died in 2014 after overdosing on heroin. today blevens is bringing her story to washington, d.c., where she and her husband will speak before congress. >> she was one of the more 300 lost that year and i' ve become a voice and an advocate. her life, her death, and her vibrant spirit now speak through me to help those who cannot speak for themselves anymore. erin: blevens wants to extend the hours of a recovery center in amber' s name to 24/7. but in order to do that she needs funding for overnight staffing. sean: the new hampshire services is getting to help $150 million lower health care costs and strengthen substance abuse care.

s office and dhhs says the state will receive up to $30 million annually for 5 years. the money will be used to strengthen the state' s behavioral health system, mental health and substance abuse care. erin: two people suffered minor injuries when a pickup truck collided with a school bus in campton yesterday afternoon. the accident happened at the intersection of routes 49 and 175. witnesses told officers the truck was turning left when it crossed into the path of the bus. no students were on board. sean: there was not a single dry eye in a pembroke classroom yesterday when a first-grader got a major surprise. >> i think he' s going to like yell and hopefully, hug me. sean: staff sergeant dana osborne surprised his 6-year-old son, declan, at the pembroke village school. osborne returned home on friday from his third deployment as a full-time national guardsman.
