manchester and along the coast now, sub freezing. everyone necessary the 20's, that means the snow is starting to stick and it will make for some slippery travel. in terms of accumulation, it's only one to three, but again that's all it takes to make it tough out there for travelers. a little bit more may develop as we go through the late evening and first part of the overnight from berlin points south into the mount washington valley. you see it fill in on radar, but for a closer look at the radar and conditions in southern new hampshire, we'll toss it to josh judge who is in milford. reporter: it's coming down pretty good here. when i spoke to you an hour ago it was just getting going, but since then it's been coming down at a good clip. as you can see, i can easily push it around and probably got quarter to half an inch of snow here. let's take a look at the radar and show you the southern part of the state where it's been

especially areas west of manchester and north as well. southeastern new hampshire, a few flakes have flown, but not much so far. we will see more moving in that part of the state in the coming hours. farther to the north the snow started after 1:00 or 2:00 this afternoon. certainly the eastern side of the state has had the heavier precipitation. in a few minutes we'll talk about this year versus last year and how they compare. right now back to the studio. jennifer: thank you. it's not so much the accumulation here, but the timing of this snow. the main roads and the highways were pretreated. adam sexton is here now with a closer look at the conditions out there. reporter: yes, we're out in milford by 101. if you left work between 4:00 and 5:00 you're in good shape. if you left between 5:00 and 6:00 it a little rougher,

necessarily the slickest. it's not that bad. but what we can see out here on 101, traffic is going smoothly, speeds have reduced somewhat. but the roads are well treated, we've seen the plows come by. so things don't like that dire for those out on the roads. meteorologists, it's going to continue throughout the night, so conditions are going to not be that great on the roads. but as far as the commute, looks like most people got home before the worst of this hit. adam sexton, wmur news 9. tom: we do have breaking news tonight, one person is dead after flames consume an historic church in grafton. jennifer: this fire started just after 11:00 and tonight the cause is being investigated by the state fire marshal's office. heather hamel has been on scene and is live now with new details. reporter: yes, this has been a very difficult day for firefighters here in grafton. they've called quite a few different departments, this did go up to a second alarm after

just about an hour ago investigators did confirm that they did find a body inside this historic church building. however they're not saying who that person is. however, as of midday, the grafton fire chief says that the person who lives on the east side of the billion is unaccounted for and they won't comment any further at this hour. >> i saw the flames and smoke and i stopped and watched for a few minutes. reporter: a church that has stood here for more than 200 years destroyed by a fast moving fire, and a person found dead inside. >> we are not in a position to release any details about the victim at this point. it's a male victim. that's as far as we're willing to g. reporter: neighbors say one man lives in the building. the chief referring to him as the pastor. both his cars were on the property. >> he'd be out in the yard all the time, messing with his stuff out there. he had had displays and christmas things at christmas time. he was a really nice guy. talked to him many times. reporter: firefighters were on scene for hours before finding

the delay caused by structural concerns. the chief says the building has no insulation and fire can crawl up the walls quickly, and there's a cable used to pull the side together that could be compromised. >> the bell is still in the bell tower, so that's additional weight, so on something that's a couple hundred years old fighting fire is very tricky. reporter: the building dates back to 1798. five years ago a new owner bought it and they tried to become a church called peaceful assembly. he says the town and the board had a dispute over unpaid taxes and just last week the town began the first step to take the building. now while still standing, the historic building is heavily damaged. >> i am not prepared to comment about the origin and cause of the fire at this time. for the sheer fact that we just don't know yet, we haven't been able to get in there and do a thorough examination to look for

determine a cause. reporter: the fire marshal is still on scene at this hour and he says the investigation will go well into the night and they'll resume that investigation tomorrow as well. you can see it's still a very active scene. route 4 has been shut down all day long and will continue to be shut down with a detour for several more hours. heather hamel, wmur news 9. tom: thank you. the man found guilty of killing a u.n.h. student is appealing his 2014 conviction. seth mazzaglia was sentenced to life in prison without parole in the rape and murder of 19-year-old lizzi marriott. the supreme court has allowed mazzaglia's lawyer to file the brief under seal, so only a redacted version of the motion to appeal is available. the state must respond by march 11. jennifer: and the state supreme court has denied an appeal by a plaistow man convicted of abusing the child of his former girlfriend, jessica linscott. roland dow claimed the trial judge should not have allowed a

testify, and should not have allowed linscott to testify about dow's abuse of her. the rockingham county attorney calls the ruling precedent setting. tom: mitment 2016 coverage now, and riding a late surge in the polls texas senator ted cruz is in new hampshire tonight. jennifer: the conservative republican is holding an event in londonderry, but earlier today was at a second amendment rally that a couple of demonstrators tried to steal the spotlight. josh mcelveen is here now with more on that. josh: ted cruz is no stranger to controversy, as his blunt style has always invited critique from those who say cruz doesn't have the ability to compromise. meanwhile cruz says at this point in the republican field, it's really down to two. no question that ted cruz had good sized support for a second amendment rally in hudson. but the texas senator still had to more or less defend himself from hecklers who made it on stage.

you doing here? are you confused? hey, hey, this is not your stage. this is not your stage. josh: the disturbance didn't break cruz's concentration as he turned the protest into an attack of his own, citing the familiar motto, live free or die. >> now if i'm right, it's not lived coddled by a bunch of nanny state liberals who want to control every aspect of your life or die. it's almost like the bernie sanders guys -- josh: he said the big republican field at this point is only an illusion. >> it does seem more and more that this is becoming a race between donald and me.

jennifer: guzman was one of several people indicted for conspiracy to distribute cocaine back in 2012 here in new hampshire. four suspects have been prosecuted and jailed. several federal districts have cases against guzman, but local officials say it is very unlikely that he would ever be prosecuted here. >> there are a number of district as cross the country that have indicted him, some long before new hampshire did. some of those districts indicted him on more complex cases. washington will decide which district will get the case if and when guzman is returned to the u.s. tom: a package of legislative bills to deal with the state's opioid crisis is on track to land on the governor's desk by next week. the governor was the first to testify at a special joint public hearing on the issue in concord today. those bills call for fentanyl to be added to the list of controlled drugs, and they mandate the use of a prescription data base. senator sanborn says from

mike: time lapse out at the coast and market square, sunshine giving way continue creasing clouds. the sidewalks are nice and dry, and in the last couple of hours some snow beginning to fall. a little bit beginning to accumulate on the sidewalks, not on the main road right at the immediate coast. but a different story in dublin, take a look at the pictures of the snowy scene there, snow all over the roads. the walkways and the parking lots. so it is tough going and even in the local manchester area the snow is finally sticking. here's the reason why. lower 30's have turned into lower to mid 20's north, upper 20's near 30 in southern parts of the state. so all at or below freezing, and that means any steady snow is likely sticking already, so it's going to be very slow on the roads between now and at least

take a look at doppler radar, starting to fill in in central and southern new hampshire, a little gap here in western zones, but it is snowing in the notch. heaviest snow beginning to fill in from the south as a lot of energy from the pending storm moves in from the west. what that does is it lifts the snow. and squalls are a possibility up until 10:00 this evening. so only a few hours of snow, but by the time all is said and done a general one to three-inch snow tally. this is the first steady snow of possibly over an inch in concord this month. but how does this compare to last january? for a look at those numbers and the conditions in southern new hampshire, here's josh in milford. reporter: thanks, mike. the snow continues to come down stely here, about half an inch in about an hour and a half. you were mentioning that, how do

of course last year it got started slowly too, you may not remember that because you remember that really busy year that we had last year. but so far in year it's been @slow as you know. but take a look at last january. there were some smaller snowfalls in the early part of the month and through the middle. but it wasn't until about the 24th and 27th and the snowstorm that we got on the 27th was the biggest one. but except for the thanksgiving storm of last year, we largely went about the same last year as we have this year. but back here live now in milford, i'll step aside and let you take a look at the snow coming down. it's a pretty steady clip there that we've been seeing for quite some time. back to you, mike, to talk about what this snow is going to do in future cast. mike: watch it on the roads on your way back, josh. certainly sticking to many areas

the energy for the storm is back in central new york state. another squall developing, this will tend to weaken as a lot of the energy is transferred to a developing storm over central new england and points east. you see the snow blossoming off shore as well. this is where the heaviest snow will line up overnight into tomorrow morning. national why the highest totals will be just off to our east. notice on future cast by 9:00 or 10:00 this evening, steady snow has shifted away from central and southern new hampshire, lifting into the mount washington valley and the great north woods, and overnight most of the snow will be up north. could be an isolated passing snow showers in southern new hampshire. wednesday we've got some sunshine in southern new hampshire, and snow showers up north. again it's only a one to three-inch snow tally. mostly light. couple of snow squalls can't be ruled out as well. higher amounts up north. tomorrow is a windy and cold wednesday with the most sun in southern new hampshire, and most mountains. dry for the most part thursday,
