there this morning. thanks for joining us. i'm erin fehlau. sean: good morning. i'm sean mcdonald. you notice we have a school announcement ticker. be aware of that. the snow is light and fluff write. it is creating some problems on the roadways. hayley: it will probably get worse before it gets better because of the wind which hasn't started to really get gusty. that's going to happen. that's going to loft a lot of that snow in addition to more snow coming down. low visibility expected through the next few hours as the wind picks up. of course with the wind flowing, it is going to feel colder as some real arctic chill comes down out of canada today. in the meantime, snow has been heavy at times. primarily in the south eastern corner of new hampshire. for those of you waking up in portsmouth, hampton, seabrook, toward raymond, and even along 101 and the 93 stretch from salem through windham in to derry and manchester, the snow has been heavy at times. that's where we've had the most snow accumulate. 23 in concord.

and in nashua 24 in portsmouth. an additional couple of inches can't be ruled out today. it is not a huge storm. even with the light amounts, the roads are slick. with the wind getting gusty, it will not only feel colder, but it will make the visibility tougher through the day. more on the forecast in a couple of minutes. for a look at the morning drive here in the granite state, we're joined live by deb davidson. good morning, deb. deb: good morning, hayley. the roads are snow covered as the bands of snow keep coming through the state. the crews are out there trying to keep up with it. do be cautious of the trucks out there. be aware that the speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles an hour. right now there are no major incidents in new hampshire. if you are headed in to massachusetts, there's a crash right now on 495 southbound which is the 93 connector where the right lane is blocked. all of the major roads in massachusetts have recently been reduced to about 40 miles an hour.

winter games. they spent the weekend raising money. because the event is run by volunteers, all of the proceeds go to the hospital. the fire department team from calgary, canada won the largest division. they are pretty good at hockey in canada. in claremont, sunday was all about the sleboggans. yesterday was world snow day. i did not know. people from all ages raced on the steerable toboggans. 100 racers tried to break the speed record of 35 miles per hour. that's pretty fast. conditions weren't quite good enough because there wasn't enough snow on the steepest parts of the track. if they went back out today, they could hit 37 or 38 mile an hour. you never know. hayley: why not? it looks like a lot of fun. a lot of kids will be hanging out in the snow. it will be nice. look at this know. i wanted to share with you a few photos from the weekend because we

look at this picture that was submitted to us on facebook from evan b. in pittsburg up north. looks like a winter wonderland. this picture was sent in to the u local section on wmur.com. this little girl made that snowman for her grandma. that's so cute there in hudson. enough snow to make all of that now. we're adding to this this morning. the heaviest amounts have been mostly at the seacoast. we've had some of the heavier bands moving through. things have lightened up significantly when you get north of concords. still we're expecting to have more snow squalls through the next few hours especially as the wind begins to pick up. i'll zoom you down and show you where some of the heaviest snow bands are just across the border here. it is probably snowing at a very good clip from hampton up in to portsmouth.

from exeter along 125 toward 111 here, probably slow going because of the roads being snow covered with an inch or go being reported in south eastern new hampshire. there's a winter weather advisory for those areas until 1:00 this afternoon. that's where we expect another inch or two of accumulation. about two to four inches from places like rochester, down in to dover, and portsmouth, and as far west as manchester, pelham, nashua, and hudson. across the rest of the state, one to three inches. higher amounts expected in the higher elevations in the white mountains. cold front on the way here. that's what's bringing in the snow showers with the gusty winds as we go through the day. of course much colder air too. look at the temperatures now. we're in the 20's in manchester and lebanon. teens in berlin. oh. look at how cold it is toward the west of us. minneapolis, the twin city, double digits

as we go through the next few days, our highs will barely get in to the mid 20's in a lot of locations. below the average high for this time in january. which is 30 degrees. get ready for a good stretch in days here where it is going to be chilly. the winds light at the moment. they are going to get gusty. look at this. by about 11:00 this morning, of winds up near 20-30 miles per hour. it continues to be gusty through the afternoon in to the evening as well that will blow around the snow a little bit that could be an issue as we go through the afternoon too. scattered snow showers through the morning. they wrap up by about the afternoon hours. you'll start to see the sun poking through. except up north the snow will linger longer there. tomorrow bright and sunny. a few snow showers in the mountains. a wintry typeset up over the next couple of days. it will be bright. if you are going up doing some skiing and boarding today, get ready for the cold and wind.

i'm deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. sean: thanks. ray brewer is also keep an eye on the roads this morning. hooksett. are you seeing any problems out from right now? ray: erin, the snow has begin to pick up in intensity. an hour ago the snow had practically stopped. we are seeing the plows go by and no problems. you may be able to see some taillights of the cars in the high speed tolling lane there as well. you can see they are problem. we've been speaking of the plows that have been going by. we have a plow that's coming here on 93 north. you'll seeing it coming and passing here a little bit. you'll get an idea as we back. you should see them probably in about ten seconds or so. you can see they are plowing in what's called tandem plowing. what that means is they are going to plow and clean the roads completely in one sweep.

going to be able to get by them. they travel at about 20 to 25 miles an hour. you'll need to plan accordingly. never try to pass one of them. that's a sure recipe for disaster. reporting live in hooksett, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: thank you. firefighters in west lebanon spent the night on the scene of a fire. the flames broke out shortly before 10:00 last night at a garage on crafts hill road. firefighters had to drag hoses about a half a mile in order to battle the fire. they were able to keep no one was hurt. the garage was deployed. sean: a lancaster man was found dead following an hour's long standoff with police. police were called to the home for a report of a woman said she was leaving the home with her two kids when 35-year-old jere high that gillen fired at her car hitting the hood.

immediate area were evacuated. police tried to get gillen to surrender. several hours later a robot was sent in to the house. gillen was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. erin: we are following a developing story out of nashua. police are investigating a stabbing. officers say two people were stabbed shortly before 11:00 in the area of railroad square. the victim's injuries are not life threatening. police say this does not appear to be random. there's no threat to the public. a nashua man is accused of stabbing another man in hudson. 35-year-old ronald russell stabbed a man in the torso yesterday afternoon. the victim was found on central street. his wound is non-life threatening. russell is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow on a charge first-degree assault. sean: a hiker to be rescued after being caught in an avalanche on mt. washington. it happened at tuckerman ravine. gorham dispatchers say the man had to be dug out by other hikers and emergency crews. it is not clear if he

the man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. the mt. washington avalanche center posted a bulletin warning of shifting snow. erin: the university of new hampshire is joining other schools and banning hover boards on campus. the police chief and dean of students say they are concerned about the safety of the devices which have been known to catch fire. the u.s. consumer product safety commission has investigated 28 hover board-related fires. more than 30 universities and three major airlines have banned hover boards. a pennsylvania woman was arrested yesterday after she was clocked driving more than 100 miles per hour on 93. troopers say 20-year-old kaila yallum was driving north towards ashland when she was pulled over and arrested without incident. sean: today is martin luther king jr. day. people will be paying

hayley: yes. as we go through the morning, that's the threat. any skiers getting ready to head north, you may run in to some of the heavier snow squalls as we go through the morning here. snow squalls are when you get the winds that pick up very quickly, you get the brief almost heavy summer thunderstorm downpour. except it was snow, of course. you can get quick accumulation on the roadways. there's a live look in dublin. it looks like a couple of inches have accumulated there. in portsmouth, backing up to a fresh dusting of snow. there's more to come. that's actually where the snow has been heaviest along the seacoast and in south eastern new hampshire. across the rest of the state we still have light to moderate snow coming down. i'll zoom you down and show you the lakes region where we have moderate snow at the moment. see the darker shade of the purple or white color from laconia down in to the middleton area

and east of concord. same thing is true along 202 there from concord toward the portsmouth area. in south eastern new hampshire this is where we've had some of the heavier rounds of snow moving through from kensington toward the hampton. some light to moderate snowfall still coming because of the concern of the heavier snow coming down in the south eastern corner of new hampshire, there's a winter weather advisory that's been posted. that goes until 1:00 this afternoon across the rest of the state. it will be lighter snow. that's why there isn't an advisory. one to three inches is a good bet across the entire state. higher amounts possible when you get in to the higher elevations of the white mountains. so far for concord this year we've had 9.4 inches of snowfall. well below the average for this time so far in the year which would usually be more like 24.5 inches. last year at this time

it's been pretty quiet to start out the winter. looks like things are picking up. today, of course, and then maybe even this weekend too. in the meantime, cold temperatures in the 20's. they will continue to slide. not much of the temperature bump through the afternoon. the winds are going to be howling as we go through the day. not the case though at the moment. a measly three miles per hour. they are going to get piped up through the morning and in to the afternoon with wind gusts near 30 to 40 miles per hour. that continues in to the day tomorrow. scattered snow showers and snow squalls through the morning. then in the afternoon they will be confined to the higher elevations overnight tonight with clearing skies. the temperatures are going to get cold. in to the single digits across much of the state. so for today we'll have most of the snow shower action happening in the morning. temperature about 25 degrees in the afternoon. then continuing to go down. then we'll have snow showers for at least the mountains tomorrow. otherwise it is a nice,

erin: it is 6:55. updating our top stories. sean: if you are heading out on the roads this morning, you are going to want to be cautious. here's ray brewer. ray: a light snow is falling across much of new hampshire. now on the major highways, speeds have been dropped to 45 miles per hour. as you can see here on 93 northbound just north of the hooksett tolls, traffic is flowing. still you are going to want to allow extra time especially in secondary roads. you may see they remain snow covered.

dead following an hour's long standoff with police. they went to a home on prospect street after a woman reported that 35-year-old jeremiah gillen fired shots at her car. gillen was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. sean: more than a dozen people are homeless. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire inside the apartments. erin: a hiker had to be rescued avalanche. the man had to be dug out of a snow bank by other hikers and emergency crews. he suffered non-life threatening injuries. hayley: a snowy start to the day. there's a live look in littleton. you can see the snow especially on the walkways there and the sides of the road. we've had light snow accumulation during the overnight hours. maybe an additional inch or two in some of the higher elevations and south eastern new hampshire through the
