who can claim second place? >> shut it and then locked it and then fight back. jean: tonight two suspects are on the loose after police say a violent home invasion targeted a man whose family is already familiar with being the victims of violence. good evening, i'm jean mackin. josh: i'm josh mcelveen. the homeowner who was injured in this break in says he fought back against his attackers. jean: andy hershberger has his story from raymond. reporter: jack reed says he was playing video games online when two men wearing ski masks came into his house and began attacking him. the assault happened about 5:30 yesterday afternoon at reed's house on chester road in raymond. he says the two men pepper sprayed him and kept telling him they needed to talk to him in the living rom. read kept fighting back, at one point one of his dogs started biting one of the suspects in

reed says he and the shorter of the two men kept fighting as he tried to make it to the front door. >> the guy i was fighting with came in here and started taking things, you could tell he was panicking because he was telling his friend he needed to go, but the little guy wouldn't let me go and kept trying to fight me. when he was outside he kept trying to put his hander around my face, so i started biting his fingers as hard as i could. reporter: the person reed was playing video games with online called for help. police say the suspects got away with small items including wrestling memorabilia and left the scene in this car, reed's car that was stolen and recovered a short distance away. anyone who has information about this case is asked to call the raymond police. i'm andy hershberger wmur news 9. jean: a decade ago the reed family was also at the center of a crime in new hampshire. wmur's jennifer vaughn is live now with what they endured years ago.

2005 that jack reed sr. was a 57-year-old handy man from derry who was lured to a horse barn in deerfield to discuss a potential job. then attacked with a sledge hammer. reed's body was found in the back of a truck in massachusetts a week later. the investigation led police to arrest four men, including vegas millionaire john brooks who believed reed had had stolen from him. brooks was convicted of capital murder and is currently serving a life sentence. two of the other three cut deals and testified against brooks. while police don't believe the break in at his son's house has anything to do with jack reed's murder, they aren't entirely ruling it out. jack reed sr. left behind five children in all, several of them providing victim impact statements during brooks' sentencing. jennifer vaughn, wmur news 9. josh: so obviously this was a very cold day out there, another one and the win just won't seem

you can see the temperature in plymouth, a chilly 23 degrees. the big question tonight, is the nor'easter on track to hit much of the east coast. let's go to josh judge. >> we're tracking both of those things. it's in the 20's in most locations around the granite state right now, and teens in northern new hampshire. as you mentioned, the wind has made it feel colder all day and we are going colder tonight. here's a sneak peak at your low temperatures to expect tonight, single digits and teens and that's not counting the weak breeze that will still be around. onto the weather system we've been talking about for the weekend, it does not look like much right now. here it is over the rocky mountains, it does not look very impressive, but it will dip down, pick up gulf moisture and then ride up the east coast. but it does look like it's going to make a path mostly to our south, not areas in the --

d.c., but most of it will be missing us to the south. jean: thanks, josh. after a relatively calm start to the trading week, things plummeted today. with markets at one time down more than 500 points. here are the day's final numbers. the dow losing 249 points to 15,766. the s&p off by 22. the reasons for this continued slide are the same factors giving us the low gas prices so many people are happy about. here's abc's elizabeth hur. reporter: just an hour after the markets opened, the numbers said it all. the already nervous investors were in for another wild ride. >> historically speaking when january is down, the year is a down year. reporter: stocks have been tumbling since new year's day with wholesale oil prices plunging, dropping to levels not seen in more than 10 years.

historically low gas prices, including gas for less than a dollar a gallon in michigan earlier this week. great news for consumers. >> put the extra money in my pocket to spend on my family. reporter: but not for energy companies, and this woman who lost her job at an oil company this month. >> i can't say i was overly climate. it's been this way for months. reporter: if prices continue to drop, the biggest fear in the markets right now is that energy companies will start to default on their debt. if they start defaulting on their debt, it could be something similar to our recession. reporter: another big concern, volatility in marketsover seas, especially china. the asian giant's growth for the year was less than 7%. that's the lowest in 25 years. >> if you have money in stocks, your best bet is to ride it out, market. because the people who take their money out of the market when it's down are the people who lose. reporter: so bottom line, take a

just remember this could be a rocky year for the market. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. josh: now to exitment 2016 coverage, a busy day on the campaign trail, including several stops at the state house today. republicans john kasich, marco rubio and chris christie all addressed a full house of representatives today which has become a primary tradition. jeb bush and ted cruz are also crisscrossing new hampshire today, both holding town halls in addition to other campaign stops. so how about this. the next president will be inaugurated exactly one year from today. but tonight we have new numbers on how the republican candidates are faring in new hampshire. the latest wmur cnn primary poll doesn't show much change at the top of the g.o.p. field. donald trump is still the frontrunner. but the pack of candidates looking to be the trump alternative is now tighter than it's ever been. >> who wins on security, trump, who wins at the border, trump. reporter: at this point it's not breaking news to call donald

in new hampshire, which he is with 34% support, but every poll seems to bring with with it a mover and it's true again in this case. >> we're seeing ted cruz now creeping up into what is almost a statistically significant second place at about 14%. reporter: but as they say, almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. and outside of cruz, the logjam continues and with a margin of error of nearly 5% in this poll, the numbers are basically interchangeable. >> christie, rubio, bush and kasich, they're all in this area. that means you've got donald trump and a tightly gathered field which is waiting for somebody to break out. reporter: ruby is the highest in terms of favorability, but that number has also dipped since december. out of the top three governors in the race, only john kasich is favorability. >> we're seeing a divided republican party here. divided in multiple ways. reporter: on the issues from isis to the economy, majority of voters see donald trump as the best equipped candidate.

number to consider. 30, that's the percentage of republicans who say they won't vote for trump under any circumstances. >> it's going to be very difficult for donald trump to win where you have that many republicans saying they really have no interest in and they primary. no matter who wins the republican nomination, it's going to be a very divided party together. josh: this poll also shows fiorina and carson trailing that pack after both enjoyed a surge late last year. 64% of those polled say they have yet to definitively make up their minds. but at 6:00 we'll have a look at the head to head general election matchup, including how donald trump fares against hillary clinton and bernie sanders. and two of the candidates set aside time for news 9 today, we had interviews with jeb bush and john kasich, that's coming up at 5:30. on the democratic side of things, the clinton campaign is also working to rally voters in the wake of poll numbers that we released yesterday.

clinton is well behind bernie sanders here in new hampshire. so to help out, former president bill clinton was joined by governor maggie hassan today who is also facing her own tough senate race this year against kelly ayotte. reporter: 20 days until the new hampshire primary. are we in the home stretch, or as former president clinton says, is that a lifetime in politics. he's here trying to get out the vote for hillary, while bernie sanders holds a 27 point lead in new hampshire. 400 supporters jammed into the green community center in concord, former president bill clinton a heavy hitter on the campaign trail, was spruced by governor hassan. who is gearing up for her own contentious spat race. >> as our first in the nation primary fast approaches, we need to work even harder. reporter: at an earlier event, bill clinton categorized the vermont senator's surge as home field advantage. but could recent poll numbers

new hampshire democratic party. since 55% of likely new hampshire democratic voters think hillary clinton is the least honest. >> her strong record of leadership has proven that she's the right person to lead our country and get things done. and that's why i am so proud to support her for president of the united states. reporter: but some wonder if hillary's struggle here could mean trouble for maggie hassan's senate race. the governor was not available for comment today. bill clinton called his wife a change maker, with a resume that proves she's ready to lead. while indulging in some glory days reminiscing of his own. >> you can give my remarks the love discount, but i hope you will also give it the performance plus out, because she did pretty well when i was president. that's the only time in 50 years where everybody grew together. reporter: former president clinton told the crowd here that

investigators say her imagination may have saved her from a sexual assault. >> a man from manchester nearly lost his life here on south willow street, today he's made a full recovery and is raising money for people battling cancer.

there are two democratic visions for regulating wall street. one says it's okay to take millions from big banks my plan -- break up the big banks, close the tax loopholes, and make them pay their fair share. then we can expand health care to all, and provide universal will they like me? no. will they begin to play by the rules if i'm president? you better believe it.

josh: welcome back. tonight police in massachusetts are investigating another school threat, this time in methuen. an e-mail sent this morning made a nonspecific threat according to police. students had to leave their backpacks outside for officers and k9 units to search. nothing was found. but yesterday dozens of schools on the east coast including two in new hampshire received bomb threats. jean: worcester will reimburse hundreds of drivers who had their cars towed after parking ban went into effect. the city sent out a tweet alerting people to the parking ban, after 1:00 a.m. on monday when most people were already asleep. and the city's emergency messaging system didn't send an alert until 7 hours later. police say about 350 cars were towed, leaving surprised and frustrated drivers. josh: certainly cold out there today, but we did see a decent amount of sunshine, in much of the state.

portsmouth, where the tugboats are under mostly clear skies. it's chilly, 27 degrees, with a northwest win about 15 miles per hour. so that certainly brings that wind chill feeling down for sure. here's a look at where we topped off in concord today, 28 degrees was your high. the average high for today is 30. so we were just a little bit below average for this time of year. nowhere near the record of 57 degrees from back in 2006. now to your current temperatures, and as you can see it's in the 20's most of the state if you're south of the notches. and to the north you are in the teens, site feels chilly. but when you add in the winds and here's the wind gusts, gusting 15 to 25 miles per hour in many locations, it's calming down just a little bit. it's feeling like single digits and teens in most of the state right now.

there's not a whole lot going on right here and a weather system to our south and southwest that will harmlessly glide to our south as it sort of phases out as well and turns into pretty much nothing. so we're going to see clear skies continuing for quite some time. next up, though we do have to start talking about the possibility of while we have this cold senior a storm system heading toward us, and it's not very much to look at. it's right here over the rocky mountains, but it will be following the jet stream, scooping up gulf of mexico moisture and then riding up the east coast like this and making a close pass at us. it will certainly affect these areas here. they've got winter storm watches across a good portion of the atlantic, coastal areas, and a blizzard watch in effect for the washington d.c. and baltimore areas. so those areas the highest confidence of being hit by the storm. up here in new hampshire, more and more likely that it misses us to the south.

we go through the next several hours, in fact overnight tonight and into tomorrow, tomorrow lots of sunshine, still chilly, still breezy, but not as windy as today was. then we'll widen the view so you can see that storm as it arrives, moving in toward us, it moves over the baltimore area, washington d.c., the coastal states on saturday morning. but to us, any impact would be late saturday night into sunday morning, it could just graze some parts of maybe southeastern new hampshire. that's really about all we would have to worry about here. here's the accumulations, that more. but notice how with the current all. of course we need to keep watch hag and see if there's any changes in that so we will be keeping our eye on that. so don't count it out completely yet, but the confidence is growing higher that it certainly will be either just to our south

the next several days you can see the cold air lingers for a while. it's cold out there and our own chief meteorologist mike haddad is out in it. where are you, mike? mike: well, josh, so chilly out there that we did take a moment to come inside by the fire. we're here in new ipswich and wind blown where it's all about cross country skiing and snow shoeing. these skiers are enjoying packed powder conditions, and it's fantastic, right off 124 in new ipswich, conditions are ideal. open 9 to 5 when the conditions permit. as can you see the conditions out there, we're talking about on average several hundred people on a great day. great would of course be defined by fabulous conditions with a lot of snow, some nice weather. today 10 degrees warmer than with a we had out there in 5 miles of trails.

josh: as we continue our commitment to 16 coverage, we asked every major candidate to answer the same series of questions, this one very important to a large group of people. what their take is on protecting and preserving safety nets like social security and medicare for future generations. >> that's an enormously important question and something i have worked really hard on. i started a caucus called the defending social security caulk us to oppose those people who wanted to cut social security,

security. what we have got to do to extend the life of social security and expand benefits is to lift the cap on taxable income right now. somebody making a million dollars a year is paying the aim amount into social security as somebody making $128,000 a year. that's wrong. you lift the cap, we can expand benefits and we've got to do that, we have a lot of seniors trying to get by on 12, 13,000, they're not doing it. so you want to extend the life of social security. the way you do that is by lifting the cap on taxable income. >> it's going to continue to provide quality care at a very low comparatively administrative cost and not allow it to be voucherrized. i think we've got to make sure medicaid is expanded, and i regret this has been such a political football because really the medicaid expansion we're talking about goes to people who are by and large working but athey don't have

insurance policies on the exchange and they don't work for employers who are able to provide insurance. so we have to do the classic work on the safety structure that provides really the knack to protect people from falling through the floor. then we've got to look at paid family leave, something that is really important to a lot of working families, young families, families with kids who are taking care of aging relatives. we're the only advanced economy that doesn't provide that. that is part of the safety net. but the best answer to a safety net is a good job with a rising income. >> of all the candidates and all three of us that are seeking the democratic party's him in nation, i'm the only one of the three of us that that has balanced a budget every year. i know how to set priorities and that's what i would do as president when it comes to not only medicare and medicaid to protect them and keep them

costs at the center of them, but also to actually enhance and expand social security. right now when we've gone through, i think, we've gone through a couple of times now where social security benefits did not rise even though the cost of living is going up. i have a plan to expand social security, to keep it solvent, and to do that by asking wealthier taxpayers actually to pay a little more on income over $265,000 to start paying into social security again. it's a critically important benefit and we need to maintain it. josh: we'll hear from republican candidates coming up in the next half-hour, also ahead, there's a new later of security and one of america's busiest airports, what overseas travelers will now encounter. jean: plus tv trends are taking over the classroom.

>> along with the cold we saw plenty of sunshine and there's more ahead. how cold the temperatures dip tonight. josh: and one face on new hampshire slopes has no plans to slow down, putting skiers half his age to shame. josh: we begin tonight with new developments in an alleged kidnapping case in dover. welcome back, i'm josh mcelveen. jean: and i'm jean mackin. the state claims a massachusetts businessman lured a woman to his hotel room under the pretense of a job interview. josh: jennifer crompton joins us from our seacoast bureau with the latest. reporter: the man is technically charged with kidnapping with the intent of assault or sexual assault. in both side agree on some basic points, that he gave the alleged victim a false name, used a fake story and that they ended up in a hotel room.

whether or not she was there against her will. 62-year-old thomas minacello used the name thomas kennedy when he met the victim. he admits he lied again when he said -- he included a job application with sexual questions and then a request that she help him get exhibit box degrees his hotel room. >> when she turns around mr. kennedy is locking the door. reporter: the state claims she was scared and caught off guard when he told her to shower and change and wanted to give her physical tests, check her heart, blood pressure, had her do, quote, bizarre poses. he says she complied because he threatened her and her children. >> she had to bend over like in a back bend position, a front

had her, he had gotten some things out of a duffle bag, he had her picking up objects with her feet. reporter: she claims he was touching and pinching her. the state saying she made up a story that she had aids to diswade him from going further, and that his requests stopped and he drove her home. but his defense argues that minacelo is not on trial for lying but kidnapping and that she was not knowingly confined against her will. >> she admitted she never told him to stop anything. she did exactly with a she was asked to do. she never tried to get out of the room. he never sexually touched her. reporter: the victim in this case was the first to take the stand in the first day of the trial today. we are chooserring not to identify her. the trial is expected to last until friday. and if found guilty he faces three match to seven years in prison. jennifer crompton, wmur news 9.

it has been a busy day on the campaign trail in new hampshire for a lot of republican candidates, and that includes jeb bush and john kasich. our new poll shows them both in the middle of the pack. but as shelley walcott reports tonight, they're confident that many primary voters haven't made up their minds yet. shelley: during a stop in manchester it's clear jeb bush is fighting for every vote. >> who are you voting for? >> i don't know yet. >> oh, come on. reporter: but he says that 11th hour indecisiveness is typical of the granite state. >> that's why this is such a special place. these voters get a chance to see everybody. reporter: our new wmur cnn poll places bush in the middle of the pack for g.o.p. candidates. still, he remains optimistic with a full line of town halls and other events during his four-day swing through new hampshire. and he has a dire prediction for front runner donald trump. >> he can't win, he won't win. you can't insult your way to the white house. reporter: also on the trail in

jean: the dow jones losing 249 points today, setting at 15,766. the nasdaq off by five. j. c. penney is jumping back into the appliance business. josh: it actually stopped selling home appliances back in 1983. but a review of online searches showed that appliances are one of the top items that people look for on the store's website. penny's will make the change slowly at first putting appliances only the some florida and texas stores. and there's a new proposal for spell grants that would give students money to attend classes all year long, it's one of two proposal from the obama administration. right now a lot of students max out after two semesters. the white house is offering help with more credits will boost the graduation rate. jean: new york's jfk airport now has facial recognition technology to help match passengers to the pictures on their passports. customs officials say the pictures taken at security are

kasich. kasich. that's a funny name. he brought back jobs both from and i don't believe another candidate can say that. jean: a new study show ising that private restaurants aren't any healthier than chains. the report looked at restaurants in three major cities, mom and pop restaurants were no better than chain restaurants when it calorie counts. the study says the average entree is more than 1200 calories, about half the daily recommendation for women. josh: back to commitment 2016, we asked candidates about a very important issue, protecting safety nets like social security and medicare for future generations. here's what the first group of republicans had to say. >> i'm the only candidate in this race with a plan on entitlement reform. it's been scored by the congressional budget office,

we need to raise the social security age two years, phase it in over 25 years, so that will go up one month every year for the next 25 years to respect the fact that we're all living longer and better lives and need to make the system solvent. second, for those who have four to $5 million saved upon retirement or have 200,000 in retirement income, those folks don't need a social security check. we need social security for the folks who really need it, for the difference for rent, heat and food. as president, we need a president to tell you the truth and i'm tell you the truth, we need to change this system and make it solvent for the people who really need it. >> for seniors or those near retirement, no changes whatsoever. we've made promises, we need to honor those promises, and seniors, you have my word, i will protect every penny of your benefits that you are owed. but for younger workers, josh, you and i are both about the

it's hard to find someone our generation who believes social security will be there for us, that's an incredible opportunity to step in and reform the program, and for younger workers we have to make three reforms. number one, gradually increase the retirement age, so that because people are living longer and give people time to plan on it and save for it accordingly. number two, change the rate of growth of benefits for younger workers. so the benefits match inflation instead of exceeding inflation. those true reforms bring social security into solvency. but the third reform is more critical, that we allow younger workers to keep a portion of our tax payments in a personal account, a 401-k that we own, that we control and that we can pass onto our kids. >> we talk about social security reform and medicare reform every happens. in the meantime, the amount of money that the federal government spends continues to

it's been doing so for 40 years. it's why we have $18 trillion worth of debt, more government spending every year and yet the government never has enough money to do the important things. it's why i'm running for president. we actually need someone from outside the system to challenge the status quote. and specifically we have to move to zero based budgeting. what is that? it is the opportunity to examine every dollar, to cut any dollar, and to move any dollar. so that with can ensure that every dollar of taxpayer money is spent wisely and well. and frankly, until we get that done, no one is going to believe that we can actually tackle a hard problem like reforming social security so that it's available for all. >> i think that we've decided as a society that social security and medicaid and medicare are going to be part of our construct as a society. the key at this point is the growth of the american economy. we're not making enough money as a society. we have deliberately tamped down the growth of this economy.

at a good right, but we're well under that now. we're putting pressure on those programs right now because there isn't enough money. the strategy has to be to control the growth of these programs, so they're not completely out of hand, keep it under control, but at the same time don't eliminate anybody. we're not interested in throwing anybody out. but at the same time the most important long-term strategy is the growth of the economy to create more revenue. then at that point you're in a position to provide these kinds of reasonable approaches while still doing national security and education. a president has to deal with the big picture and that's what i'm going to do. josh: ted cruz was just guessing about my age there. but we'll hear more from the g.o.p. candidates tomorrow. you can also find this series in the political section of wmur.com. >> everybody is talking about the cold weather out there and will there be a storm this weekend. we'll tackle both of those coming up.

lapse photography, from north washington. there's a look at the skies we saw, there's the mountain revealed from behind the clouds, a good deal of sunshine even in northern new hampshire today and clear to partly cloudy skies out there right now. manchester, the same thing, it's clear, it's chilly, 28 degrees. a west wind about 10. and never made it above 30 degrees in manchester today. hanging out in the 20's just about everywhere right now except for north of of the notches where you're in the teens. and the winds continue to gust. it's falling just a little bit. and the areas seeing gusts following slightly, at least not as bad as it was. but it still feels cold and the win is adding insult to injury. wind chills in the teens and single numbers in a few spots, so bundle up if you're heading out tonight and tomorrow as around.

the weekend right now, the outlook, we're watching that atlantic storm system, which hasn't even formed yet. right now, we're in the clear and we're watching this weather s system sliding to our south, slowly falling apart. not going to be an issue for us around here, things clear back out, more sunshine on the way for tomorrow. and the storm system that we've been watching, finally it came in yesterday, last night, off the ocean, and it's been tracking down through the rockies over the denver area right now. can you see a little bit of snow out of it is not much of a system right now. but it will be following the jet stream, that means in typical fashion dips down toward the gulf of mexico, scoops up moisture and then it starts to ride up the coast. as it does so it brings a lot of snow. this is pretty high confidence that it brings a lot of snow to a lot of big cities along the east coast like washington d.c. and baltimore and other places like that. virginia could see a lot of snow out of this. here's that system as it rides up toward us. watch it develop here in the

stronger, begins to move along the coast, watch it ride right up all that as to and this is happening late friday night, early saturday morning. high pressure to our north acts as a block, and deflects it and it mostly stays to the south. notice the flat top here at the top of the system, that's because that area of high pressure pushing back and eventually shoves it to the east, looks like any way right now and is either a complete miss or just very small impact on maybe southeastern parts of the state with some flurries or that type of thing. not a major deal here at all. that's what it looks like right now. of course we'll continue to follow that, see if there's any last minute jogs. the high temperatures for tomorrow, the chilly weather continues, what about the extended outlook, as we head into the weekend as long as that
