ray: good morning. the flames burned for hours at the multi-family home. by the time the flames were out, there was nothing left but a pile of rubble. everyone got out safely, but they lost everything. flames were shooting out the windows and through the roof. many are feeling the loss because of the historic significance of the building. the house dated back to the 1800's. according to neighbors a well-known local painter lived and worked there. >> it was just devastating. i think it is the most important house in new castle from a historic and artistic perspective. it is devastating. of course everyone is out safe. that's a good thing. i know that they lost everything. ray: the fire chief wasn't available yesterday to comment about the fire. there's no word yet on how it may have started. we're told one family

hotel for the next week. in the stewed owe, ray sean: thanks. smoke detectors liking turning serious. they were able to contain the flames and say the fire was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials. all three people inside were able to get out safely. one firefighter was treated for a knee injury. erin: they are look for the robber who stabbed a convenience store clerk. police say the man entered on north main street about 2:30 yesterday afternoon, pulled out a knife, and asked the clerk if he wanted to die. when the robber started grabbing money from the register, the clerk got a stick and started fighting back. the suspect is described as a white man in his 40's with gray facial hair.

police are looking for a man that robbed pierre's place around 6:00. a canine was able to track the suspect in to brattleboro before losing the scent. the robber was described as 5'2" and thin. a high-speed chase at epping at nearly 130 miles per hour. 29-year-old kenneth coogan lost control, went airborne, and finally came to rest about 100 feet over an embankment. he was treated for minor injuries. sean: a massive clean up effort continues to the south after a powerful storm dropped two feet new york city. it could be days before travel is back to normal.

air travel is a mess. as you can see by the number of canceled flights, a lot of stranded planes. lana zak is tracking the aftermath. >> this weekend's storm was one for the record books. nearly two feet of snow in some areas of washington, d.c. it was the biggest storm ever in baltimore at 29.2 inches. and in new york central park a new 24-hour record. grinding to a halt were the forms of travel, almost all forms. creating a unique situation, sunday mass on the highway. and on the jersey shore, blocks of ice floated down flooded streets. the snow building continuously throughout the weekend.

down the coast the weight was too much. even the ambulance was stuck. this morning the east coast will be digging out. >> a record amount of snow must be removed. when i say removed, that doesn't mean we can push it out of the street. it has to be lifted and taken away. reporter: for many, there's one more snow day ahead. if you are wondering, the snow jackpot winner seems to be glen gary, virginia. airlines have to make up for the 14,000 flights weekend. in washington, lana zak, for abc news. sean: that's a lot of snow. the clean up from the storm did turn deadly in boston. a man was struck by the plow in the dorchester neighborhood. a shovel was found just a few feet away. the victim's name has been not released. the driver is cooperating and so far no charges have been filed.

looking in to whether the sun and glare off of the snow may have been a factor. erin: a hampstead police officer has lost his battle with cancer. matthew moore passed away on saturday. he joined the department in 2009 after working as an officer in pelham and sanddown. he was a marine core veteran. he was 38 years old. he's survived by his wife and two children. public calling hours are on thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 at st. anne's parish in hampstead. sean: it is a quiet day on the campaign trail. chris christie has stopped in greenland, merrimack, and hooksett. donald trump will be in farmington tonight. "the boston globe" is throwing its support

the globe says she's more seasoned and grounded than when she ran in 2008. she spent the day campaigning in iowa. erin: the season is over for the patriots after the tough loss in the afc championship game. the patriots fell behind early. they were never able to grab the lead. tom brady struggled early. a missed point came back to haunt. patriots found the end zone in the last minute. they still trailed by two. the two-point conversion was picked off. brady came up short in his quest as denver wins by a final of 20-18. fans here in new hampshire are disappointed. some are trying to stay positive. >> hopefully next year we don't have injuries. they are a young team. they should be fine. erin: the broncos will take on

it should feel good in to the afternoon with a good deal of sunshine around. detail and a couple of systems that we're tracking during the week ahead coming up. sean: thanks. the weather has arrived in new hampshire and the ice catses are back in lincoln. erin: it is something to see. there's a throne and one of the longest ice slides in the world. it is one of just three ice castles in america. it covered more than an acre. >> we just opened. it was a slow start to the winter. it was very, very warm. we got a great team. once it was cold we were anal to build super fast. we're as big and good as we've ever been. erin: the ice castles are scheduled to be open through march if the weather cooperates. sean: you need the cold temperatures.

getting in on an activity that's popular. they hosted the first place yesterday. they have larger, wider tires providing a different way to provide the outdoors in winter. they are still best on groomed trails. new hampshire has a fat bike series as well. i got to race in one in stratham. they are a lot of fun. erin: are they easy to turn? sean: it has to be groomed. if it is really soft you'll sink in. erin: you don't want that. erin: it was a bit of a slow weekend at the box office. "the revenant" took the top spot. several places were closed for at least one day if not two, taking a big bite of business for hollywood. changes could be coming to the way that fisherman get lobster fishing licenses. board. the catch has been huge. there's a long waiting list of people trying to get in on the action. now there's a proposal to create a new class of license with a limited number of traps. it could also help new lobsterman get on the water faster. there are currently 5,700 licensed lobsterman in maine. sean: a guest in hawaii snapped the pictures of the lifetime. check out the scene as

could be a spotty rain shower. maybe a snow shower tomorrow evening. passes away harmlessly enough early on wednesday morning. temperatures from the teens up north and nine on top of mt. washington which shows you something about a relatively milder air to the mid 20's. we should be warming up. a fairly light wind. only around five to ten miles an hour in to the afternoon if anything out of the northwesterly direction. highs today up in to the 30's. couple of southern spots. with a light wind and sunshine, that will feel good. much like it did yesterday just with a little bit of lighter breeze. partly cloudy skies tonight. temperatures in the teens and 20's yet again. tomorrow any early sunshine should be giving way to clouds. you'll notice the risk of a passing shower at any point tomorrow or a brief sprinkle here or there or maybe a snow shower tomorrow evening on early on wednesday. once that moves by, the breeze will pick up on

skies will continue to cear across the area. it sets up a cooler air mass for the end of the week. fair skies for wednesday afternoon and in to thursday. you can see the digging trough out west. that could mean the next storm system located off shore but may be close enough to give us a couple of snow showers around on friday. temperatures today going anywhere from the 20's up north to the mid 30's in southern spots in to the afternoon. two systems on the maps this morning. looks like one will be tomorrow afternoon with maybe a rain shower and maybe a snow shower tomorrow evening. that will give way to the breeze that we'll have around on wednesday. the next system looks to be on friday. most of the maps keep the area of low pressure located off shore. it is one of those that you want to stay tuned on as we get our way in to the day on friday. from there looks like we should have a decent weekend. temperatures in to the 20 30 's. temperatures at or above the average. average high this time of year around 32. we're above that all the

police are looking for a man that robbed a store. he ran off toward red road. erin: coming up, the snow wasn't all bad news for the nation's capitol.

for the two-point conversion. a former patriot was able to tip the pass. they win 20-18 advancing to play the carolina panthers. jason king has reaction from denver. reporter: the battle of the two of the best quarterbacks turned out to be a defensive struggle. neither team could run. the passive game was inconsistent at best. in the end it was the broncos that ran it and through it better than the patriots. so the patriots leave ejected. now 0-4 as a franchise in denver. >> we just wanted to job. not necessarily worry about the score. try to make as many plays as we can and get zone. you know, just couldn't get it done, man. >> we didn't play our best football. they made more plays

saying about the fire. ray: the families that live in the multi-family home lost everything when the building burnt to the ground on saturday night. phyllis lives across the street. she described the scene as the home went up in flames. anything like it. it was a ferocious fire. sparks were flying and the flames were shooting out of the roof, the windows. ray: witnesses say everyone got outside safely. the loss is being felt not just by the people who live there, but by the whole community. painter edmond tarbell lived and works in the house which dates back to the 1800's. >> it is devastating. i think it is the most important house in new castle from the artistic and historical perspective. it is hard to see that. everyone is out safe. that's a good thing. i know that -- they lost

ray: he has a book with some of the his works. he made portraits inside the house. after seeing the home every day, it is sad to see it goes. >> to know it was across the street. it gave me a thrill. to know it is not going to be there anymore is really, really devastating. ray: at least one of the families is staying in the hotel. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. in the studio, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: all right. thank you. a massachusetts man is facing charges after police say he hit and killed a pedestrian while driving drunk. the victim, 57-year-old paul gelinas was walking along main street in lincoln saturday night when he was hit from behind. he was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. the driver, 28-year-old paul larkin, was arrested on a challenge of aggregated dwi. >> we know that people come up here whether you

anyone who may have witnessed the accident is urged to contact the fish and game officials. sean: a plan to build a new back country hut is sparking some debate. the mountain club is proposing to build a hut less than two miles in to the woods in a section of crawford notch. it could be close enough to the main road so that people who do not get in to the mountains can experience the woods more easily. some hikers argue the area is too crowded. the debate continues. erin: coming up, a bizarre end to a police chase in california. two men had to call 911 after they fled from police in the middle of a snowstorm. sean: do you often feel under the weather? you may be allergic to the cold. kevin: looking at a weak system toward us. a warming trend getting up up above 40 degrees.

tracking coming up. sean: thanks. that was the scene outside of the white house. a lot of people are digging out after the massive blizzard. 30 deaths blamed on the storm which dumped more than two feet in parts of the gulf coast to new england. we have an update from the nation's capitol. nikole, things still aren't back to normal; right? nikole: not close. they shut down as a caution. it will be a multi-day clean up effort. really the biggest challenge is clearing the streets. they are pretty clear around us here. it is the secondary roads that are more which haven't been touched. that with the frigid temperatures caused the also the federal government shut down with the house postponing its votes in week. other parts of the country are getting back on track. they are resuming for

many of the folks who got stuck this weekend are finally free and back home. one thing that is not back to normal yet? air travel. hundreds of flights are canceled today. although the good news here in d.c. that two of the airports are re-opening this morning. sean: nikole, we can see the snow banks. how much snow did washington get? nikole: the official tally is 18 inches. you can see some of the snow banks here around me. that's really being questioned. many parts of the city, i haven't done a measurement here, actually got more. where i live i got 27 inches. i'm just inside of the beltway. so, you know, it is still unclear why there's such a disparity. what we can tell you is that apparently the device that measures the snow got lost during the storm. we don't know how it happened. weather observers insist the readings are

they stand by it inspite of the conditions. sean: dozens of people were killed in the storms. what are we learning about the victims? >> a lot of people lost their lives from shoveling, which happens when we have big storms like this. this includes a u.s. capitol police officer who suffered a heart attack while shoveling at his home. also carbon monoxide poisoning is to blame for other deaths due to generators and tail pipes covered in snow. because of the poor road conditions, some people lost their lives in fatal crashes. sean: live in washington. thank you very much. erin: california had a rescue mission after two fugitives nearly died in freezing conditions. they tried to pull over a car for swerving. the two men took off running. the left in full force. the police tried to warn

by night fall they were freezing and ended up calling 911 for help. a s.w.a.t. team found them the next morning. >> we knew there was likely they could not survive. i've never seen two people happier to go to jail because they knew they would be dry and warm. erin: both were treated for hypothermia. sean: three inmates escaped a jail on friday. they managed to cut through the steel bars before sneaking through plumbing tunnels and ended up on the roof. they used bed sheets to repel four stories to the ground. the escapees are may be armed. >> i think the public should expect the worst if they are encountering them. >> we will not stop until these individuals are back in our custody. i am confident that will occur. sean: the inmates are charged with murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping.

offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to their capture. erin: a father and son were killed over the weekend in a gun battle that broke out at a gun shop in mississippi. >> i'm still in shock about this. my wife is upset subpoena she's crying. it is really shocking and heartbreaking. because we wasn't expecting nothing like this. erin: authorities say a man and his son went to the shop and become agitated when they were handed a $25 service charge even though their gun was shot fixed. the owner tried to deescalate. shots were fired and the owner and his 17-year-old son were killed. the customer and son were injured. so far no charges have been filed. sean: turning now to sports, the celtics played the 76ers in philadelphia. the c's had no problem beating the nba's worst team. marcus smart buried a

celtics up 43-26. boston kept that momentum going. they went on to win 112-92. they play the washington wizards tonight. erin: congratulations to the gatorade runner of the year, mr. daly. he won the meet of champions and finished 13th at new england and 13th at the foot locker regional championship. he's going to run at boston university -- brown university rather next year. check out the dramatic video of alaska. a keyer took a nasty fall down the mountain. as she tumbled, she narrowly missed some jagged rocks. she sat up in the snow after the fall and said she was okay. she walked away with two injuried fingers. sean: look at that. she was hitting snow.

storms which will be located well off shore over the next ten days to two weeks. several of them will be a possibility. most of those continuing to stay away and off shore for the present time. we'll let you know as we get closer if any of those try to get closer to the coastline. we start off early this morning watching this system back out in the central plains. eventually tomorrow could be in a rain shower around in the afternoon. by then, temperatures should be warm enough. then we'll see that chance of a snow shower tomorrow evening or early on wednesday. temperatures really not too bad early this morning. there's the little bit of a five to ten mile an hour breeze this morning. some of the lower valleys dropping in to the teens. a lot of lower 20's. teens in the north country. looks like through the day the clouds up north try to break apart. southern areas, partly to mostly going anywhere from 33 and 36. again with a breeze around five to ten miles an hour. a much lighter wind than what we've been having

out there. later on this evening we'll continue to see partly cloudy skies across the area. temperatures overnight easing back in to the upper teens to mid 20's. tomorrow any sort of early sunshine giving way to clouds. notice the chance of a sprinkle or light rain shower. temperatures from the mid 30's to lower half of the 40's tomorrow afternoon. a little melting going on. from there, quite a few clouds around tuesday evening. the chance of a passing rain or snow shower should give way to clearing skies and a breeze. temperatures in the 30's to near 40 degrees on wednesday. the cooler air starts to rush in. then we get a weak area of high pressure in control for thursday. from there, you'll notice the trough digging out west. that will be the next system which moves across wednesday in to thursday. right now looks like it will be far enough off shore we don't see any sort of major snow from it on friday. closest pass on friday. that would be the next quote unquote possible system. at least right now most of the maps keep that off shore.
