memoir when breath becomes air, doctor paul kalanithi shares his story. chief global anchor katie couric has his story. >> reporter: paula was the modern definition of a renaissance man, he majoreded in english and biology at stanford. he went on to receive masters degree before heading to yale. >> at first i thought he was this boring guy who wanted to be a doctor, he was really serious, i realized on his medical school i.d. he was wearing a fake must mustache mustache. >> reporter: paul continued his medical career becoming a neurosurgeon at stanford. their lives and careers were soaring. but at 36, paul got some devastating news. although he never smoked he was diagnosed with lung cancer,

erin: good morning to you. your time right now is 8:56. a massachusetts man is accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian while allegedly driving drunk. state police say the victim, 57-year-old paul gelinas, of lunenberg, massachusetts was walking when he was hit from behind. he was rushed to the hospital and later died from his injury. the driver, paul larkin, 28, was arrested on a charge of aggravated dwi. a massachusetts man is accused of leading state police on a high speed chase while allegedly driving drunk. 29-year-old kenneth coogan was hitting speeds of 130 miles an his car. the car went airborne and finally came to rest about 100 feet over an embankment. coogan was treated for minor injuries. outside we go to the we're seeing temperatures in the 20's. kevin: surf is up.
