>> wmur news 9 daybreak. >> amy: good morning, new hampshire. thanks for waking up with us. i'm amy coveno. let's get over to josh. josh: it is a chilly one out there. there are a lot of places that are around 51 degrees this morning, concord. and there are 40's on the map to the north and west. so we are going to see a chilly start but temperatures will rebound into the 70's. we have had a few clouds work their way up from the former hurricane. and because of that there is a high surf advisory in effect for

and it will gradually track and restriction here before turning around and moving away. today, partly sunny skies. clouds building in through the day that the rain holds off until tonight. 71-81 degrees. we will have a coast -- we will have a clo l a few minutes. amy: labor day weekend has been cut short for many along the east coast, former hurricane hermine did a good deal of damage when it hit the south, including two fatalities. when it headed north, residents were warned to get out of its way, especially along the shore, where millions love to spend summer's last hurrah. abc's maggie rulli has the latest on the storm's path. >> hermine continues to batter the northeast. >> you can feel it in the house, when the waves hit, the pilings shake.

churning up dangerous waves and potentially life threatening rip currents. >> head lifeguards have been very careful at keeping people out of the water. >> govenors along the eastern seaboard are taking emergency precautions. new york city beaches are shut down for the second day in a row and new jersey has declared a state of emergency in some coastal counties. crews have been working through the weekend building up sand dunes to keep the storm surge at bay. >> absolutely ferocious. >> hermine slammed into florida hurricane with 80 mile per hour winds. tossing trees, exploding powerlines and causing death. >> i looked out my window and we have an ocean on our front porch. >> hermine then turned towards georgia, the carolinas and virgina with torential rain, leaving some entire neighborhoods underwater and caving in giant this sinkhole. hermine remains a powerful storm that's expected to sit just off the coast of southern new england for days. and officials are once again urging people use caution and stay out of the water, even if

possibility of strong rip currents. parts of cape cod are under a tropical storm warning. south shore beaches in nantucket are closed as well as beaches in new bedford. several ferry services have been canceled because of the storm. wells beach in maine is not expecting large crowds but they are increasing the lifeguard staff. stay out of the water. ray brewer, wmur news 9. amy: new on daybreak. two people are recovering this morning after suffering injuries in an atv crash in clarksville. fish and game officials say the crash happened around 8:40 last night on bear mountain. they say 22-year-old zachary lamson, of hillsborough, was operating the atv when he lost control and he and his passenger, 19-year-old rachel locke, were thrown. both lamson and locke suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

center. investigators say he was operating under the influence at the time and charges are pending. laconia police are investigating a hit and run. the crash happened yesterday afternoon at the intersection of court and fair streets. police say a bicyclist was hit by a blue nissan altima that took off from the scene. the victim was taken to a local hospital. witnesses identified the driver as 54-year-old juan padua. police say an arrest warrant has been issued for him for charges of felony conduct after an being a habitual offender. a hiker had to be rescued after suffering a medical emergency while coming down the huntington ravine trail on mount washington. fish and game officials say a 62-year-old man from massachusetts started feeling ill on the steepest part of the trail yesterday afternoon. the national guard sent to a helicopter to the area and a medic was lowered into the ravine before the hiker was airlifted to memorial hospital in north conway. at this time there is no word on

20 firefighters from new hampshire are back home this morning after helping to battle a major wildfire in idaho. the pioneer wildfire has already scorched more than 180,000 acres and it continues to grow. wmur's kristen carosa tells what the new hampshire crew faced as they worked to battle the flames. >> after fourteen days of fighting a massive wildfire in idaho city, these hardworking firefighters landed at manchester boston regional airport sunday. >> it has been challenging with the dry conditions they have faced out there. very steep terrain and limited access to any type of cell phone use to be able to call back to families. >> the pioneer wildfire is burning in the boise national forest, it started on july 18. new hampshire firefighters joined four other crews from across new england for the trip out west.

your deist, smokey is to job you will do in your life. >> firefighter david kullgren tell us crews were getting only 5 hours of sleep a night, they were up at 4:30 each day and worked until 7:00 at night battling tough conditions. >> some days they had us had the fire. actually holing out the equipment to work in other places. >> kullgren says the pioneer wildfire is only 55% contained and continues to grow each day. >> when we left it was about 180,000 acres so it grew 100,000 acres in the two weeks we were there. >> right now, nineteen crews continue to assist from all over the country. >> we have many firefighters who have been involved in the program for the years. they have gone on over 20 deployments throughout the country, as far away as alaska and quebec.

staters can catch a ride up mount washington on the snowcat. the mount washington observatory just announced its 2017 winter day trip dates. visitors can take a snowcat ride to the top of the tallest peak in the northeast, while getting an inside look at mount washington's legendary weather from the scientists who live atop the mountain. for the more adventurous, the observatory is also offering overnight trips. you can learn more about the trips by visiting the website, mountwashington.org. an ies the exeter-area kiwanis club hosted its annual ufo festival at town hall. the festival draws ufo enthusiasts from all across the country. organizers say it's an educational experience for both believers and skeptics. now in its seventh year the festival serves as a major fundraiser for the kiwanis club. >> as is the case with all kiwanis clubs worldwide, our focus is on children and community. and for us, this is our major fundraiser for local children's charities.

an invasive microscopic organism is leaving its mark on washington's monuments and memorials. including the jefferson memorial. >> the top of it, the dome is so black. >> it's not necessarily horrible, right? amy: the invasive bacteria is leaving a grimy film and black splotches on the white marble of several monuments. the organism is officially known as bio-film. the national park service has tapped experts worldwide to find the right cleaning concoction. but so far, nothing has been very effective. a woman in alaska is boasting this morning after making an unusual rescue. she helped save an elk that got tangled up in a swing. liana enriquez has the story. >> take a look at this -- an elk with a large tire swing and log wrapped around his antelers -- debra butler of pine took these videos and picture of this distressed elk on her phone. we spoke with debra via facetime and she tells us she was shocked when she looked out her window yesterday morning to see this

>> i literally had to take a double take because i thought i am not seeing what i think i'm seeing. and literally this poor guy had a tire swing all hung, tangled into his antelers. >> but lucky for the elk he had stumbled upon the perffect yard for help. because debra is a veterinarian so she took on the 12-hour task of setting him free and here's the moment it happened. and he was free and it was amazing. amy: surfing team tryouts in california were interrupted last week when a four legged swimmer decided to get in on the fun. check out this video. you can see a deer taking a dip in the ocean, right next to some surfers. one surfer came face to face with the deer. some of them tried to coax the animal back to dry land. eventually the harbor patrol had to come in and convince the deer

josh: how cool would it have been if the deer got up on the surfboard? that would have been great. amy: what are we doing here on a monday? josh: i have no idea. temperatures are cool, yet again. 40's and 50's across the state. most of the state, 50 degrees. are feeling a little cooler this morning. most of us are seeing great visibility but some thick fog has lower visibility to the north. everyone else has 10 plus miles. a few high thin clouds are working their way up from down

tropical cyclone. and because of the storm being close enough and the wind beginning to push the water, eventually those waves will begin to kick up and because of that, the national weather service has issued an advisory of waves. and a tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of new england jersey. here is the current situation. it looks tamer because we only see part of the rain. this is as far out as the doppler reaches. it did strengthen overnight to 70 mile-per-hour wind. and there is the location now beginning to take a turn.

will add back in this direction. just barely tropical storm force winds. around here, we won't be dealing with that. a look at it from the futurecast point of view, it is impressive to see it spinning there. today, mostly sunny. tonight, tomorrow and into wednesday. extra clouds will be around at times on tuesday and wednesday. i will be making way for warmer conditions. so because the storm is out to sea, we get sunshine today. we will have low 80's in a few locations.

11-year-old boy in a parking lot last night and then fled the scene. a suspected drug dealer was arrested in nashua after police say they found him in possession of more than 30 grams of heroin as well as other drugs. and as hermine continues to make her way along the east coast, beachgoers are being warned to be cautious of strong rip currents and higher waves. he were actually saying it will be a little more delayed? josh: we have the benefit of the cape and the islands locking the strongest of the waves. not quite as bad. here's a look at the temperatures. 40's and 50's. another chilly start. clouds are thickening up in southern new hampshire which will come and go. mostly sunny in northern new hampshire today.

the storm was moving out to sea , east of ocean city, maryland, where officials cautioned residents not to be fooled by an apparent improvement in weather. >> once the weather improves the sky looks great it's sunny, the wind goes away, the rain stops but the rip currents. it's always following events like this are our biggest concern. that is when people think it is safe to go back in and that is when it is most dangerous. >> around midnight, officials said the tropical storm warning for new york city had been canceled but was still active for areas including concern highlighted by the state's governor. >> there is a possibility that there could, i repeat, could be significant challenges, but not limited to, loss of power, flooding and transportation issues. >> one person died in north carolina saturday amid high winds from hermine and a falling tree killed a man in florida last week as the storm approached. though officials have not determined if the storm was the cause. i'm reid binion, wmur news 9. amy: as hermine makes its way to

prompting high surf and rip tides warnings here in new hampshire. here is a live look at our hampton skycam. the storm could create waves between six and 7 feet high. ray brewer joins us live now at jenness beach in rye to tell us about the warnings for those planning to go to the ocean today. rate: if your plans do call for you to head to the beach, you are being urged to take caution. that is because they are expecting high wavese there could also be some stronger wind gusts. there are tropical storm warnings out for parts of cape cod and south shore beaches in nantucket are closed, and all beaches in new bedford, massachusetts are closed today. several ferry services to nantucket and martha's vineyard are also canceled for today. a little bit north of here, wells beach in maine is not expecting large crowds today, but it is increasing its life guard staff because of dangerous rip currents. officials say your best bet is

live in rye, ray brewer, wmur news 9. amy: new on daybreak. laconia police are asking for your help in tracking down a driver involved in a hit and run. officers say an eleven-year-old boy was in the cumberland farms parking lot on endicott street around 10:20 last night when a red car backed into him. a female passenger could heard yelling stop as the car drove away. it was last seen turning down tower street. the boy who was hit was treated at the scene. anyone with information on this hit and run is asked to contact laa also new this morning. nashua police say they've busted a suspected heroin dealer 37-year-old kristopher balcom was arrested last week after a search of his apartment on ayer road. he is now charged with 7 counts of selling heroin and being in possession of more than 30-grams of heroin, with the intent to distribute it. police say they also found balcam in possession of mushrooms, morphine, suboxone and marijuana. a man from new york has pleaded guilty to transporting two woman

32-year-old neptali de la cruz hernandez was arrested in april at a salem hotel. he now faces up to 10 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced in december. a police chase, stretching across several towns, ended in a crash. it all started when epping police were called to the burger king on route 125 saturday night for a report of an intoxicated man who assaulted someone. police say the suspect sped off in a car. the chase ended in plaistow after the man crashed. being released. somersworth police are asking for your help in locating a pair of robbers. they say a man and woman held up the nouria gulf gas station on route 108 just after 10:00 saturday night. the clerk says the suspects were wearing dark-hooded sweatshirts, gloves and masks. the two were spotted leaving the scene in either a chrysler p.t. cruiser or chevy hhr. the ongoing drought is now taking a toll on new hampshire's

the owners of ten rod farm in rochester found dozens of fish struggling to survive in a mud puddle that was once a stream. they took all the fish they could and moved them further upstream. fish and game officials says fish are likely being affected by the drought more than other wildlife. a lack of water in smaller ponds and brooks causes the water to heat up quicker, creating less oxygen for fish. >> new hampshire agriculture is a key to the economy here in new hampshire and the new hampshire way of life and it's very unfortunate for the all the farms that depend on the rain for their crops and their livestock as well that graze on those crops. amy: fish and game says the drought could cause some wildlife to relocate if their source of water dries up. former presidential candidate bernie sanders is returning to new hampshire today. the vermont senator will hold his first solo campaign event for hillary clinton at 3:00 p.m. in lebanon. he also plans to make stops in manchester and warner.

got into the doorframe. the ground beneath us was like a tidal wave beneath your feet. amy: the magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck on saturday. there are no reports of any injuries or major damage. an increase in magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes in oklahoma has been linked to underground disposal of wastewater from oil and natural gas production. 37 wastewater disposal wells are now being shut down following saturday's quake. their series finale in oakland on despite a near perfect sunday. performance from eduardo rodriguez, boston couldn't close the deal. rodriguez had a no-hitter going into the 8th inning the first time he's pitched in the 8th inning all season, but then this . marcus semien grounded one back up the middle and rodgriuez knocks it down with his leg, and then got the out at first base, but oakland would challenge the play, it was reviewed and overturned.

amy: hermine has created a bit of a problem for one furry family in florida. two baby raccoons lost their mom after the storm hit friday morning. the pair fell out of a tree that the former hurricane knocked down. and a homeowner says the mom is nowhere to be found. a rescue group is now taking care of the little guys. philadelphia welcomed a new baby gorilla to its zoo last week. and now the zoo is asking the public for help in naming the little guy or girl.
