amy: now on daybreak, the storm system that was once hurricane hermine continues to move along the east coast. we will explain why it is prompting warnings for beachgoers in new hampshire. josh: i've got the latest information on the track of hermine, as well as how your holiday weekend shapes up. >> crew, 38,000 acres. amy: a group of new hampshire firefighters is back home after helping battle a major wildfire out west. class -- a happy ending to a troubling situation. find out where a woman helped rescue an elk after it got tangled in a swing. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 daybreak.

hampshire. happy labor day. i'm amy coveno. let's get over to josh judge in the weather center to find out about the rest of the holiday weekend. josh: do you want to know about the rest of the holiday weekend? amy: i do, indeed, sir. josh: it is going to be a pretty nice day thanks to hermine slowing down just a touch. that will help us get in one more real nice day. 40's to lower 50's at the moment. from the former hurricane. it is also kicking off some high surf advisories from maine to new hampshire. a look at the system right now. still churning away just to our south. over the next day or two, it makes a closer pass at us before it reverses course, pulls away,

breezy, and 71-81. we take a much more extensive look coming up. amy: labor day weekend has been cut short for many along the east coast. former hurricane hermine did a good deal of damage when it hit the south, including two fatalities. residents were warned to get out of the path along the coast in the north. the latest on the storm's path. >> >> now a post tropical cyclone, it is turning up dangerous waves and potentially life-threatening rip currents. >> the lifeguards have been careful keeping people out of the water. >> governors along the eastern seaboard are taking emergency precautions. new york city beaches are shut down for the second day in a row.

sand dunes are being built up to keep the storm at bay. >> ferocious. >> hermine slammed into florida on friday as a category one hurricane. tossing trees, exploding power lines, causing death. >> we have an ocean on our front porch. >> it then turned toward georgia, carolinas, and virginia, leaving some entire neighborhoods underwater and caving in t off the coast of southern new england, expected to remain there for days. officials are urging people to use caution and stay out of the water, even if the weather seems decent. abc news, washington. amy: as hermine makes its way to new england, the storm is prompting high surf and rip tied

hampshire. the storm could create waves between six and nine feet high. ray brewer joins us. are you seeing that serve pick up yet? -- surf tick up yet? ray: we have noticed some surfers starting to show up. lifeguards are cautioning that people do need to take caution if they do go into the water because of high waves and strong rip currents. tropical storm warning right now. south shore beaches in nantucket are closed. all beaches in new bedford, massachusetts are closed today. several ferry services have been closed. beaches in maine are not expecting large crowds, but it is increasing lifeguards staffs. your best bet today is to stay out of the water, officials say.

are recovering after suffering injuries in an atv crash in clarksville. it happened on bear mountain last night. 22-year-old zachary lamson was operating the atv when he lost control and he and his passenger, 19-year-old rachel locke, were thrown from the atv. lamson was airlifted to dartmouth hitchcock. influence at the time. charges are pending. laconia police are investigating a hit and run. it happened at the corner of court and fair. a bicyclist was hit by a blue nissan ultima. the driver was identified as 54-year-old juan padua. charges have been issued for

coming down huntington ravine trail on mount washington. a 62-year-old man from massachusetts started feeling ill on the steepest part of the trail yesterday afternoon. the national guard sent a helicopter to the area and a medic was airlifted into the ravine. 20 firefighters from new hampshire are back homeft helping battle a major wildfire in idaho. the pioneer wildfire has scorched more than 180,000 acres and it continues to grow. wmur's kristen carosa tells us what the new hampshire crew faced. kristen: after 14 days of fighting a massive wildfire, these hard-working firefighters landed at manchester-boston regional airport sunday. >> it has been challenging.

type of cell phone use to be able to call back to their families. kristen: the pioneer wildfire is burning in the boise national forest and started on july 18. new hampshire firefighters joined four other crews from new england for the trip to the west. >> the hardest, dirtiest job you will do in your life. kristen: crews were getting only five hours of sleep at night. and worked until 7:00 at night battling tough conditions. >> building line out in front. some days, they had us behind the fire. pulling out equipment to use in other places. kristen: high and your wildfire is only 55% contained and continues to grow. >> when we left, it was about 180,000 acres.

hampshire a little cooler because of that. north end west will be the warmer -- north and west will be the warmer parts -- spots for the day. the winds will be pushing up the waves. things get more choppy through the day. that is why this high surf advisory is in effect until tomorrow. tropical storm warnings in effect for so long island, southern rhode island could also see some effects from it, the wind for those locations and much angrier sees, as well. here is a look at the current stats on the post-tropical storm hermine. top winds, 70 miles per hour. it strengthened a little bit overnight. a look at the different computer models. you can see they are starting to

a general north were northwesterly trend and then a reverse around like this. as the winds strengthen, it does not affect new england all that badly. southern parts of new england and perhaps new jersey, long island, this is where the tropical storm force winds will be, those yellows area -- yellow areas. the storm gets weaker and weaker and as it pulls away, it wes we are not going to see major damage from the storm in new england. futurecast showing a few of these showers rotating around the storm tonight into tomorrow. some scattered showers. the timing has been pushed back a little bit. a couple left over showers a possibility on wednesday, as well. the storm finally begins to pull

into friday. highs today will be in the 70's to the lower 80's. the onshore wind will keep it a little cooler right here at the coast. if you are going to head to the beach, be careful. the waves will produce rip currents and those are very dangerous. i'm sure the lifeguards will be on that today. the seas will be growing in building through the day this afternoon into tonight. those waves will be much stronger. the temperatures going up later this week. the humidity levels, going up as well. not a lot of rain showers. maybe thursday night, a chance of some more widespread, better downpours. amy: we cannot buy a good rain shower. it has been a while. a time to check our top stories. here is ray brewer. ray: even though the tide is on

what was once hurricane hermine. tropical storm warnings are out for cape cod and the islands. several ferry services are also canceled for today. people are being warned to take caution due to high waves and strong rip currents. amy: laconia police have issued an arrest warrant in connection with a hit and run. 54-year-old juan p[ bicyclist and left the scene. he is now facing charges that include felony conduct after an accident. firefighters are back home after helping battle the pioneer wildfire in idaho. more than 180,000 acres have burned and it is only 55% contained. coming up on daybreak, smart technology in a glass.

other drugs. strong rip currents and higher waves are being warned of with hermine approaching. josh: i'm sure they will be taking precautions at the coast. there is a high surf advisory in effect. 40's and lower to mid 50's around the granite state right now. there are some high, thin clouds and southeastern new hampshire has the best today. there is where the high surf advisories are in effect for today. the waves will be the highest later today and into tonight. there is the current status and condition of hermine. it will be pulling closer to us today. it will be breezy at the coast. the highs, anywhere from 71 to

hermine's latest track in a few minutes. amy: hermine may not be a tropical storm anymore, but officials want residents to remain cautious. it continues to make its way toward the coast and that has prompted some warnings. >> right now, we urge people to be careful, listen to your lifeguards. >> new jersey governor chris christie warning of the lingering danger from people are causing post-tropical storm hermine. >> the recurrence are going to get -- rip currents are going to get aggressive. >> by sunday night, officials said the storm was moving out to sea east of ocean city, maryland. >> once the weather improves, the sky looks great, it is sunny, the rain stops, but the

ray: good morning, amy. some people are hoping to take advantage of the high waves you just mentioned. you can see a couple of surfers in the water right now. we also have more showing up here. parts of cape cod are under a tropical storm warning. south shore beaches in nantucket are closed. all beaches in new bedford, massachusetts are closed today. several ferry services have also been canceled. crowds on the beaches, but lifeguards staff is being increased because of dangerous rip currents. your best bet is to just stay out of the water, but certainly a lot of surfers will be taking some precautions. we can just imagine. reporting live, ray brewer. amy: new on daybreak, laconia police are asking for your help

cumberland farms parking lot around 10:20 last night when a red car back into him. a female passenger could be a -- heard yelling "stop" as the car drove away. anyone with information is asked to call laconia police. also new, nashua police busted a suspected heroin dealer. 37-year-old kristopher search of his apartment. he is charged with seven counts of selling heroin. police also found him in possession of mushrooms, morphine, and marijuana. a man from new york has pleaded guilty to transporting two women to new hampshire to engage in prostitution. 32-year-old neptali de la

sentenced in december. somersworth police asking for help in locating a pair of robbers. a man and woman held up the noruria gulf gas station on saturday night. they were spotted leaving the scene in either a chrysler pt cruiser or a chevy hhr. the ongoing drought is taking a toll on new hampshire's wildlife. dozens of to survive in a mud puddle that was once a stream. they took all the fish they could and moved them further upstream. fish are likely being affected by the drought more than other wildlife. a lack of water in smaller ponds and brooks causes the water to heat up more quickly, creating less oxygen for fish. >> new hampshire agriculture is a key to the new hampshire way

some thick fog in parts of the valleys right now. upper valley, mountain valleys. everywhere else is clear. temperature starting off in the 50's and the 40's. it is a cool and crisp start out there. these are wind gusts that will pick up a little bit this afternoon. not that bad. 15-25 mile-per-hour wind around today. farther inland, a little warmer. we are not dealing with any major effects from the storm. the biggest effects will be a couple of showers. also, the choppy seas around here. it will end up being partly

go, the more sunshine you will see. we will see a mixture of clouds and sunshine. high surf advisory in effect for anywhere from 5-9 foot waves and the risk of rip currents, as well. compare that in contrast with down into southern -- and contrast with down into southern new england, where you have a tropical storm warning. a look at hermine right now, which is about to take l it slowed down and shifted to the north and eventually to the northwest is expected, but notice the wind, still 70 miles per hour. this is almost hurricane-force. still a very strong storm. a look at the track. it begins to weaken and turned back to the north east again. just a glancing blow at new england.

closer, stalling and weakening, then wednesday night into thursday, it begins to pull away. as that happens, tonight, tomorrow, even wednesday, there could be scattered showers around. there is a check of your high temperatures we are expecting today. a lot of spots cooler at the coast because of those northeast winds. tomorrow, some scattered showers he runs there. there are a lot more showers be hot and humid for the end of the week. amy: if you are going for a walk on the beach, you might find inspiration on iraq. kind messages are being left on rocks in the massachusetts -- at massachusetts beaches. a woman started by writing a few messages on rocks and got an overwhelming response. the project is spreading across the nation.
