like, you know, i want -- although, yeah, no, he's obsessed with 21 pilots. i guess -- >> getting a little bit sophisticated, young kids. but like contentwise they don't know what's going on. >> no. >> they just sing away. >> so happily. >> and you're like, oops. >> you're horrified. >> did you have any theme parties growing up? >> i love a theme party. i'm still having theme parties. >> i wanted to ask >> i do a hot mess party every year with my friends and, oh, well that was actually nicole richie did -- oh, that's another themed party. oh, there we go again. >> robin said do you do a theme party growing up? it's like kate has not grown up. >> we love that about you. >> so funny. oh, my gosh. yeah, we just did -- nicole
8:34 am
party -- we all like theme parties. >> what was that theme, disco? >> yeah, it was night fever. and we danced to disco music all night and it was great. >> well, i tell you what, happy 6th birthday to leah she's got us all talking about theme parties. george, there's something else you have. it's not really like a party. >> something brand-new. we've all heard about taking your kids to work, of course, well, there is a brand-new thing out since millennials, half the workforce, some companies are starting work day. amazon -- you like that -- you do not like that idea at all. >> i love it. >> wait a second. >> i am not taking pie parents to work. >> why are you so horrified by the idea of your parents coming to work? >> i don't know. my mom is just a little -- she's wild. >> yeah, my mom is wild too. >> but you visit your mom on set recently.
8:35 am
>> yeah. >> bringing my mom to set is a whole other ball game. she walks in, it's like a tornado. look at these pics. >> momma goldie. yeah, well, you know, she's goldie hawn. she's wild. it's like -- it's like i remember when my mom would do hot lunch at school. and i was just like -- oh, no. you know, with the pizza and things and i was like, oh, god. well, you know, she like pirouettes everywhere and it's the best, she is still pirouetting everywhere but, you know, when you're a kid, you know, you're sort of your parents when they're wild, and i think ryder is like that with me too so, you know, i get it. i get being scared. >> this is the first movie "deepwater horizon" where you get to work with your pa, kurt
8:36 am
your parents to work day. that was sort of equal. what was that like? >> that was cool. you know, what i really, really loved about being on set with -- we didn't have many scenes together in the film. but what i loved about being on set with him was it was a reminder of me where i fell in love with making movies and watching him, you know, it's a very different experience when you're watching a movie being made than watching the movie because it's horribly boring. i mean it's just being on set, oh, i love that picture. buts and but for me as a kid i loved it. like i loved every aspect of it and i loved watching kurt because he's such a phenomenal actor. and he's -- yeah. [ applause ] and but he put so much care and effort into his roles and in a way that is different than i think of a lot of young people that i've worked with, you know, it's just a different mentality.
8:37 am
let's talk about you as mark wahlberg said you're sort of the emotional heart of this film. of "deepwater horizon." >> felicia in this film i play, i play mark's wife felicia williams and she -- really the character represents all of the families on the deepwater left in the dark for many hours not knowing what was going on with their families, not knowing -- not having any idea if they were going to come home and it s time i talk about it because i -- you got to be on set with these people and you get to talk about this experience that was incredibly traumatic. and you realize what felicia said, one minute it felt like an eternity and -- >> she was on set with you. >> she was on set with us sometime, yeah, i got to talk to her a lot. she's a awonderful very strong woman. >> i love that scene. >> yeah. >> let's show people a bit of
8:38 am
news. just look. >> natalie, this is felicia williams, our husbands work on the "deepwater horizon" together, well, i just called the coast guard and they can confirm there's a fire. i was wondering if maybe you heard something. >> what did the coast guard say? >> just that there's been a fire. >> shelly heard people were jumping off the rig. >> oh, gosh. i was telling >> i know. >> i can't watch it. very hard. >> for people who are not familiar with the story, yes, it was this horrible, horrible environmental disaster and that. but the 11 people that were killed they almost became a footnote to the story and this -- these families were so appreciative of you and mark and the whole cast for bringing their story and letting people know how it impacted them? it was really wonderful to be in new orleans and have the premiere. we did a premiere in new orleans
8:39 am
were there, and you really felt it. you know, we felt it and knew it when we were doing it. we just -- you have this sort of extra added thing in the back of your head going, you know, the families are going to see this movie so you really want to be careful and there's no carelessness going foo making a film like that when you know the families are watching and then when you actually have the experience and you see that they just sort of have this moment to kind of pay -- sort of feels like, you know, a sort of memoriam to these people who really saved each other. there was some real heroes on that rig. it's surprising that more did not die because they were so there for each other. >> when you watch the film you're thinking, oh, my gosh. i mean it's tragic that 11 lost their lives but so many more could have and mark's character
8:40 am
last one off the rig, mike williams but the thing i think that pete did that's really amazing about this movie because, you know, i read the script. i know the story and then i watched the movie and i was completely engaged which is rare when you're making movies and i think pete did this amazing job of sort of -- you feel like you're in -- it's full on, you know, you're in -- it's just almost like you feels anxiety like i think people will really get an experience watching this movie that just goes -- oh, my god, you know. >> can we say this about you. you have always been a joy to watch. always very talented but you have blossomed. [ applause ] into this beautiful, beautiful soul of an actress. thank you for sharing that. >> thank you. >> ah.

8:46 am
yeah. >> and, yeah, just opened on friday. just opened friday. you're there with a great group of people. i'm curious, anything that stood out to you from the museum? >> you know, i just -- as someone who is from elsewhere, i'm now a citizen, by the way. i just became a citizen. [ applause ] but i just felt that museum is such an incredible testament to some of the bad stuff that has gone on in this country's history and we need to know what went wrong in ordeo things right and that's what i feel that museum represents. >> absolutely, 100%. i agree with you. [ applause ] and something that you did get right is this film. i mean it's such a heartwarming film. it really is. but you learned how to play chess in this film from the master himself. >> i did. >> from the character you played. i'm curious when you learn to play chess from the guy who you're playing, are you as good as he is now? >> no.
8:47 am
no, my self-esteem remained very low while playing robert katende who i play in the film at chess but he's incredible. not only did he teach me how to play but how to teach it which is a pretty complicated thing. >> i got my board set up in my dressing room after the show. give me a lesson. >> are you throwing down right now? >> i need some help. you can beat me. that's what i'm saying. and the young lady, phiona, is it true this is the first movie she's seen in her own life story. >> well, i -- while we were doing the film katwe and madina sat next to me. her talons clawing in my arm, oh. and then at one point she turred to me and said is that what we are doing? and i suddenly realize it was the first time she had ever seen a movie on the big screen halfway through shooting a movie for disney. >> and it was about her life.
8:48 am
>> and you said this movie is life affirming because it shows moviegoers africa in a different way than what they're used to s seeing. >> i've done some films set in africa and we've all seen flips set in africa and it showcases the more negative side, genocide, dictators, disease and that can and sometimes is part of african life but this is also part of african life, people who are self-possessed, who impact their own communities possley, a young girl from a slum in uganda who to become a chess champion. >> i tell you what, man, you do a great job. you're incredible. congratulations on becoming a citizen. >> thank you. >> love it. love it. hey, and the movie "queen of katwe," it opens nationwide on friday. make sure you go check it out and david oyelowo, everybody, who is such an amazing guy. you can meet the real-lie girl who inspired the movie in our digital series "young and gifted." watch it now on our website. we'll be right back.
