but one of the residents didn't make it. at this hour the victim's name has not been released, but he's described as a man in his early 60's. wmur's ray brewer is live near the scene as the investigation into the cause continues. ray: good afternoon, sean. the state fire marshal's office is leading the investigation and an autopsy is planned for tomorrow. in the early morning hours the investigation continued into the fatal fire in seabrook. >> approximately quarter to one the call came into our station. ray: the fire was in a ground floor apartment at 689 lafayette road, building three of the governor weare complex. >> upon arrival a light smoke , condition in the first floor here the initial crew was seeing. ray: the building contains 12 units, according to the chief, and 11 of them were occupied. the first priority for firefighters, making sure that everyone was out.

checked the second and third floor and confirmed everybody was out. ray: there was one exception, as firefighters checked a first floor apartment where the fire started they made a grim , discovery as they encountered drastically different conditions. >> once they opened the door it was heavy black smoke in the room. we just came across someone still in the apartment and it ended up being a fatality. ray: the fire chief says most of the damage was contained to the ground floor apartment where the fire started. he and third floor should be allowed back inside as soon as the management company gives the ok. reporting live in seabrook, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: dover firefighters were on the scene of a three-alarm apartment building fire on new rochester road this morning. they found heavy fire when the arrived on scene at 2:00 this morning. officials say there are more than a dozen units in the building but there are no reports of any injuries. investigators now say a small charcoal grill is to blame for a fire that heavily damaged a dorm at dartmouth college over the wekeend.

up on a flat section of roof outside a window of morton hall, and weren't watching it when the fire sparked. the school is now providing housing for about 70 displaced students. a former stoddard firefighter who pleaded guilty to two counts of arson will spend the next two and a half years behind bars. david plante learned his sentence in court this morning. wmur's andy hershberger has the developments. andy: david plante minimum of 2.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of arson this morning. he was a stoddard firefighter when he admitted to starting 2 brushfires on april 20 and 21st, 2016. one fire destroyed 190 acres of land. prosecutors say neither fire caused injuries or damage homes. prosecutors say other firefighters found him in the woods near where one of the fires were set and asked the firefighters to take a cell

suspicions and plante was eventually interviewed by police. >> he asked them to take a picture with the cell phone and right than the bells and whistles started going off for the please officers involved in the investigation bit he said he was off looking for a source of water in the area. anybody who knows the area would not have been looking for a water source in that particular area. they got their antenna raised and at that point they asked him to he went through the poly and it showed that he was deceptive. andy: as part of the plea bargain he is ordered to pay a half million dollars in restitution. he is also ordered to get a psychological evaluation when he is released from prison. andy hershberger, wmur news 9. sean: new at noon, the manchester fire department is mourning the loss of a former chief. former chief joseph kane was a second generation firefighter and served with the department

this morning, the department released a statement saying their thoughts and prayers are with his family. just into the newsroom, a member of the u.s. coast guard who was hit by a van friday morning has died. durham police say 22-year-old richard davies was hit early friday morning on route 4 near arthur grant circle. davies was stationed at the portsmouth naval shipyard. police say they don't think any charges will be filed. a monster storm is churning in the caribbean. hurricane matthew is still a massive category four, with enough power to trigger life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides. already, haiti is feeling the power and the u.s. military is taking no chances, already evacuating hundreds of military families. abc's elizabeth hur has the latest. elizabeth: with hurricane matthew on the move, jamaica is boarding up windows and
