good afternoon. i'm sean mcdonald. the 3-story wooden home was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived last night. the drought conditions making their battle even tougher. wmur's ray brewer is live at the barnstead fire department. ray, any update on the victim's condition? ray: none at this time, sean, and the man's name has not been released. however, he was apparently one of the people calling 911 reporting the fire. this video shows what barnstead firefighters fouhe about 50 to 60 feet out of the roof. ray: the fire was reported around 11:00 monday night and quickly went to three alarms. >> the building was totally involved upon arrival. there was fire coming out everywhere. ray: according to a neighbor a man and a woman lived at the house. firefighters say they found a man outside on arrival. he was taken to the hospital. the neighbor says the woman went to stay with a relative. as firefighters continued to

the fire. >> we mounted a defensive attack on all 4 sides of the building. ray: compounding the problem limited access to the fire. ,>> we got blocked in here cause the power lines that come across to the house dropped in the road and they were still live so it blocked us in so trucks were lined up to route 28 which is about a mile and a half. ray: and the drought meant that they were having to shuttle water in from 5 or six miles away. it took about an hour and a half to get the fire under control. in the daylight you could see that firefighters managed to keep the fire from spreading to the surrounding woods. bue shell. investigators with the state fire marshal's office are leading the investigation into the cause. behind me, one of the fire trucks has just returned from the scene at barnstead. no firefighters were injured thanks in part, the fire captain says, to rotating the crews so they didn't exhaust themselves. reporting live in barnstead, ray

for today on the man who died in a seabrook apartment fire. investigators have not released the victim's name and the state fire marshal's office is still trying to figure out how the flames started. the fire was contained to a first floor apartment and other residents in the building should be allowed back in soon. new details now on hurricane matthew. a hurricane watch has just gone into effect for parts of florida. a tropical storm watch also issued after delivering a devastating blow to haiti. the catastrophic storm is the strongto abc's elizabeth hur is in new york with the latest. elizabeth: hurricane matthew making landfall this morning in haiti. the monster storm now the strongest hurricane for this region since 1963, is already being blamed for taking at least four lives across the caribbean. >> we've already seen deaths. people who were out at sea. there are people who are missing. there are people who did not respect the alerts.

elizabeth: with winds reaching 145 miles per hour, powerful enough to wipe out parts of haiti, jamaica spared a devasting blow, but the storm still dumped more than a foot of rain in some areas. abc's gio benitez is there. >> we are not completely out of the woods, the clouds you're seeing are from the edges of hurricane matthew but jamaicans are looking at this with guarded optimism. elizabeth: meanwhile in cuba, the forecast is calling for up to 40 inches of rain possible in parts of the island, enough to cubans are keeping busy boarding up buildings and filling sandbags t. preparations also underway here in the us, with the category 4 hurricane on the move, now tracking west threatening the , east coast by the end of the >> the destruction could be catastrophic and deadly. we are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

effect across parts of florida with the states of emergency in north carolina. sean: there's still some uncertainty over how much of an impact matthew will have on the u.s. and where the storm will head next. let's bring in kevin skarupa. this is a tough one to call. kevin: while the general forecast is pretty straightforward, it is the details and exactly the switch of just 20 or 30 miles one way or another is going to make a huge difference. you can see over the next on a position off the east coast of florida as we work our way into thursday afternoon and evening. from there, turning north and northeast, making its way across eastern portions of the carolinas and moving northeast from their. exact how close that will be to new england is the million-dollar question. category one or category two strength hurricane by the time he gets here. a lot of time to keep an eye on

police across the country are seeing an increase in the number of creepy clown sightings and now there are reports of clowns lurking around new hampshire. durham police say there were reports last night that a person was walking around the unh campus dressed as a clown and using a megaphone. officers checked things out, but did not find anything suspicious. berlin police say they've also looked into reported clown sightings, as well as keene police. meantime, in massachusetts, a shelter in place order was issued at merrimack college last tweet about an armed person, dressed as a clown, roaming around campus. one building was evacuated but police say they did not find any gun-toting clowns and a college spokesperson now says it was a false report. if you have shellfish from maine, you might want to listen up. officials are recalling some seafood after mussels and clams from certain areas tested positive for a potentially deadly neurotoxin. the toxin appears to remain hazardous even after the food has been frozen or cooked. the affected clams and mussels were harvested or wet-stored

northern and western areas. even the art we see a thinning of the cloud cover through the remainder of the afternoon i suspect the biggest of cover will be in the north country at this point. good deal of sunshine tomorrow as we continue the fair skies at the end of the week. the front back to our west along with a moisture riding north will be the players we are watching as far as the maps are concerned in time for holiday weekend. in the upper 50's to 60's. the blend of sunshine and clouds heard low to mid 40's overnight tonight. a bit of patchy fog in some areas. giving way to sunshine tomorrow afternoon. upper 60's to mid 70's going forward, getaway day on friday. from there, the front approaches

northward up the east coast. category 4 hurricane, matthew moved across western areas of haiti. tracking across eastern parts of cuba in the afternoon and evening. from there, the hurricane center forecast pretty straightforward for the next two days. it goes up through the bahamas and stations itself just off the east coast of florida. most of the maps agree on that. how close to the east coast or southern new england, and what the strength of it will be, how long it will go overland, will dictate a lot of what the strength of the system will be. as it continues to weekend, the fairly concentrated win and rain starts to unravel a little bit.

of a quick 12-18 hours of rainfall. notice in the tracks, there is a general consensus of what you saw on the insurgency and this gives us the potential for some rain and a lot of that, the timing of which is concentrated on very late saturday night and into sunday before pulling away sunday evening. that would be the question mark on the forecast, when matthew does or doesn't do across new england. temperatures built through friday and a nice start to the holiday weekend with a chance of rain and wind on sunday. advises come in about every three hours and the latest track every six hours. let's go to "grow it green." ray: welcome to "grow it green." i'm joined by margaret hagen from unh cooperative extension. this has been kind of a rough

shrubs and towns have issued water bans. ray: 40 we need to do in terms of the drought situation? we are down 50% for the year. margaret: it is moving into october and your leaves are going to be falling but the root system keeps on going for quite a while. if at all possible, you want to water your trees for a month after the leaves fall. ray: stress. margaret: the drought has short and long-term effects. this is a very obvious short-term effect on the japanese maple. in addition you get the wilting and you also get shorter growth for the year and believes tend to drop earlier. if you are worried about your trees and shrubs, i am going to put this up against your shirt.
