>> what could be the most powerful atlantic storm in a decade is churning up waves along the florida coast right now. hurricane matthew has grown back into a category 4 hurricane. good evening, i'm jean mackin. shelley: i'm shelley walcott. the back end of this storm is still lashing the bahamas, but the first rounds of rain and wind have also arrived in the u.s. with some gusts reaching 140 miles per hour. jeth could be deadly, morning 2 million people have been ordered to evacuate. we begin in new smyrna beach, florida. reporter: the wind and rain are beginning to pick up as the outer bands of the storm begin to reach the florida coast. with its powerful winds, threat of severe flooding, hurricane matthew is moving towards florida. now a category 4 storm it's on track the be the most powerful

than a decade. >> evacuate, evacuate, evacuate. unfortunately this is going to kill people. reporter: possibly the largest evacuation ever in the sunshine state, with orders in place for two and a half million people from here to the carolinas. >> seems like it's going to be pretty bad. so it's best to get off the island. >> taking the warning seriously after seeing the destruction matthew left behind in the caribbean. battering the bahamas and kill more in what officials there call the worst humanitarian crisis since the 2010 earthquake. in florida theme parks closing, store shelves left empty and businesses boarded up. from miami all the way up the coast and inland, millions are now bracing for matthew and what the national hurricane center says could be potentially disastrous impacts. and president obama has declared a state of emergency here in

5:03 pm
like that. but the good thing is, if it does come back toward the bahamas or florida, it would be much weakened by that point. but what will happen is it will move up to the jacksonville area in south carolina and weaken to a category 2, then 1 by the time we get to later this weekend. then it will be tuesday by the time it returns back to the bahamas, basically then fizzles out. but this is the main problem with this storm, it's going to be from jacksonville to west b areas. devastating coastal flooding and storm surge, winds over 100 miles per hour. and then flooding rainfall on top of all of that. so i'll talk about the storm more in the full weather. jean: florida airports began shutting down this morning, causing a ripple effect across the country. those travel troubles are also being felt here in new hampshire. kristen carosa is live at the

reporter: jean, people here in new hampshire are being affected, so far today here at the airport there have been a few delays and at least two cancellations for flights going to and from orlando. manchester airport is monitoring information about the storm from local, state and federal emergency preparedness offices and will issue traffic advisories as necessary. the airport tells us so far things are going pretty smoothly, but that could change. one man who works at the airport has plans to fly to orlando this coming tuesday. he has he says his flight will most likely be canceled, but his main concern are his neighbors that are there right now. >> been waiting all summer to go, we may have to stay. reporter: staff at the airport say they will continue to watch this storm very closely. they are urging passengers traveling to and from florida to check with their airlines before

5:06 pm
850 people. we have reached out the the campaign to find out how people were invited to be part of tonight's event. we have not heard back as of news time. supporters who didn't get an invite still turned out and so did protesters hoping to change minds. >> i like everything he stands for. he's a businessman, our country is in such trouble financially that it needs a business pan to get it back in shape. >> he has said some truly sexist his policy ideas are just wrong for the united states. reporter: tonight's event will be a lot like this weekend's debate in st. louis. it starts here tonight at 7:00. we'll of course have continuing coverage on wmur at 11:00. cherise leclerc, wmur news 9. jean: former presidential candidate governor o'malley is campaigning in new hampshire today for hillary clinton. he stopped in conway earlier and is speaking at white mountains community college in berlin

chris sununu and colin van ostern participated in a forum sponsored by the group no labels. huntsman and lieberman moderated that event. both candidates answered questions about taxes, the economy and the opioid crisis. >> i know we can overcome this crisis, but it's going to mean tapping into people from every age and stage in life to strengthen our work force, to have more people prevention and education in our schools, less people getting hooked on prescription pain killers in the first place. >> businesses that will invest in job training on the back end of recovery. right now after 28 days of at the recovery center we say good-bye and good luck, that's nod good enough. jean: a bow man faces several charges tonight that include wreckless conduct after

defendant to stop. the defendant ultimately stops four feet from the cruiser, while sergeant is still in the cruiser. reporter: his bail was set at $170,000. andy hershberger, wmur news 9. shelley: switching gear news to talk about baseball, it is a big night for red sox fans. the american league division series begins tonight with the red sox facing off against the cleveland indians in cleveland. jamie staton is here now with jamie: it's the best of five series with games tonight and tomorrow afternoon in cleveland at progressive field. let's take a look at one of the starts for rick porcello against the indians, porcello pitches tonight and he beat the indians in this game, the only time he faced them, may 22 in boston, he had big papi to thank. david ortiz had a big day, a pair of r.b.i. doubles and then this home run as boston won 5-2. with big papi retiring, you know he wants to have a big post season and his teammates want to
5:11 pm
>> our guys are very well aware of where we are, and we have stated all year long that sending david out as a winner would be i think the greatest gift he could receive, even though he's received some great ones. jamie: these teams know each other really well, starting with the managers. three indians players are former red sox, mike naply, cocoa crisp and andrew mil jean: all right. new trouble be the for samsung's smart phone. shelley: up next what we're learning about the device that forced this plane to make an emergency landing. hayley: tracking the latest on hurricane matthew and what our weekend weather looks like, that's coming up. mike: it's our first haunted thursday of the season, we're going to take you inside spooky world's brigham manor, straight ahead.

cutting taxes for small businesses. targeting millions to fight the opioid crisis. all with no income or sales tax. working across party lines is how maggie hassan makes new hampshire work for us. i'm maggie hassan and i approved this message. shelley: time now to see how traffic is flowing around the state. this is 293 in manchester. jean: with a live look at the evening commute. >> we've got beautiful pleasant conditions for the drive home today and the traffic is doing pretty well as well. coming over the massachusetts line you'll have a little slowdown getting through the work zone in wind ham and there's a lot of traffic on 111. moving well up to about londonderry, then another slowdown approaching manchester. 293 is doing well, but keep in mind that there is a blake
5:16 pm
traffic at the granite state exits later on. it's busy but moving well through the hooksett tolls and up to concord. 101 west is crowding up as you approach 114 and heading to bedford. an earlier truck fire at the everett turnpike southbound doesn't seem to be holding up traffic much, and northbound on the everett is very heavy through merrimack. looking good to the seacoast but we do have the usually stop and go traffic on the spaulding turnpike as you make your way north through jean: thanks. tonight a new investigation into samsung is under way after a phone caught fire on a plane. shelley: just minutes before takeoff in louisville, a southwest plane was evacuated because of a burning smart phone. the owner of the phone says he replaced his phone after samsung recalled nearly one million of its galaxy note 7's. >> i noticed smoke just pouring
5:17 pm
continued to smoke. shelley: safety experts say the problem is most likely with the battery. samsung is investigating and if confirmed that this phone was definitely a replacement, there could be a second recall. hayley: good evening, everyone. the big weather story today is this month -- monster storm. it had intensified again to a category 4 around noontime and that here. we were hoping it would maybe stay weakened, but as it moved over the open waters it continued to strengthen and this is the latest satellite and radar from it. you can really see the eye of it. and sometimes the eye wall itself, where you have the strongest winds, can go through a regeneration and that has happened over the past couple of hours or so. and so now it's got its eye on the central part of the east coast of florida, as we get into
5:18 pm
hour sustained. that's enough to cause catastrophic damage where that eye wall comes in. and looks like it's really going to hug the coastline of florida. so it's only going to be a small area that gets those really strong winds. but in that small area, as it hugs the coast, it is going to be devastation across that area with wind that strong. then you also get the storm surge on top of it. this is the latest track, and you see it does go up toward georgia here, so the savannah area and up into south carolina by the time we get to the weekend. then it does something that is truly bizarre. we don't see this very often with storms. it actually goes back down to the south and yes it could again make another landfall in florida by next week. the good thing is it really starts to fizzle out. so this is going to be the main story as we go through the next 24 hours.
5:19 pm
zoomed you right down, this is melbourne and right at cape canaveral where you see this red color, that's the 140-mile per hour winds, that's a problem. as it moves up toward daytona beach and then you see that starts to weaken as it gets up into georgia and south carolina, so this is going to make news over the next couple days. closer to home, nothing going on. we're enjoying the sunshine. we could use the rain, but we're not getting any. temperatures are in thes, now, 75 concord, 74 manchester, 71 nashua. as we go through time during the overnight hours tonight again with the clear skies and light winds the temperatures are going to drop. no threat for any frost tonight, but we'll all fall into the 40's, so a cool start tomorrow morning. but look at this, another fall beauty tomorrow with sunshine and that continues as we get into the start of the weekend, though saturday late in the day clouds are going to start to move in and some showers, any
5:20 pm
showers moving through. tonight patchy fog, clear sky and it's going to be cool. here are the temperatures tomorrow, maybe a couple of degrees warmer than where we were today. this is some very warm stuff for this time in october. if you're heading out to do some leaf peeping, near peak almost everywhere for the lakes region northward. one chance for a shower saturday. sunday we have some clouds moving through, but then monday still enjoying the sunshine for and then tuesday, wednesday, thursday we continue in this dry stretch of weather. we desperately need rain. not going to be coming any time soon. now we're going to head out to chief meteorologist mike haddad who is starting up our haunted thursdays, and looks a little creepy where you are, mike. mike: yes, it does, i'm here with a few of my friends at spooky world, presents nightmare new england.
