difference we have had. we got a lot warmer today and we're still heading upward over the next couple of days as we head into what will feel more like september weather. still hanging on to 60 degrees or higher in some parts of the state right now and we will not drop a whole lot more. tomorrow morning we will all be in the 50's as we start out our monday. a couple of showe downpours in areas just north of the lakes region and much more scattered showers and areas of central and southern new hampshire. the warm air begins to push on in and a big change on the way for tomorrow. look at the projected highs for tomorrow and it goes even higher in the days to come. i will have more in a couple of minutes. cherise: fish and game are warning you to be prepared if you're heading out to see fall foilage.

number of hiker rescues spikes. wmur's kristen pope live in the studio with how to stay safe. kristen: cherise, fish and game says this is one of the most popular times to explore new hampshire, but they say people need to plan ahead. families like this one travel from all over to see new hampshire's fall foliage. >> yesterday we went to kenar mountain. we took a tram and we looked nearly, i believe it is like 4,000 foot high. kristen: day trips like these sound harmless, but fish and game officials say it's more serious than you think. >> a lot of the issues that we're having is people are just unprepared. they're not packing things that they should have in their gear. they're not bringing any gear in some cases. kristen: like the couple we spoke to. people come from all over just to get a look at this, but fish

quickly. fish and game officers say hiker rescues are increasing this time of year. >> currently right now, we have two going on and we've done multiple other ones this weekend and it's been a really busy weekend. kristen: a local inn owner said she's had residents that went exploring and needed help. >> they called us instead of calling 911, and luckily my daughter answered the phone. she's an emt. she asked the couple where they didn't know. >> saturday was really cold and we tried to prepare everything. the jackets and the kids got their warm jackets, too. kristen: fish and game warns not to take any chances. plan ahead so you can enjoy your trip with no issues. fish and game officials say some of the most important things to bring with you on a hike are a map, compass, warm clothes, extra food, and water.

our website, wmur.com. live in the studio, kristen pope, wmur news 9. cherise: authorities are looking for a missing elderly woman last seen near the town line of tilton and sanborton. police say linda tate took her australian cattle dog for a walk around 2:30 this afternoon and has not returned. officers believe she is wearing the clothing seen in this photo. the dog, masie, has a silver training collar and is black. call sanborton police. tonight, a rhode island man is facing charges in connection to an early-morning stabbing in plymouth. it happened just after 4:00 a.m. on winter street, which is off-campus housing for plymouth state. three people were attacked, one is still the hospital. all are expected to be ok. officers arrested 19-year-old terrence simmons junior around 3:00 p.m. police say they found illegal drugs on him during the arrest. he will be arraigned tomorrow

inside their car. it happened in salem on east broadway at about 7:00 tonight. the car landed on its roof, damaging the car so badly the driver side door wouldn't open. firefighters had to cut a hole in the passenger side door to rescue the only person inside the car. the crash is under investigation. in manchester, a crash on valley street closed the road around 6:30 this evening. a car hit a utility pole between wilson and belmont streets. police say nobody was taken to the hospital. tonight, a brand-new abc news-?washington post? poll has hillary clinton with a four point advantage over donald trump, but still within the margin of error. with election day now just a little over three weeks away, the stakes could not be higher. abc's richard cantu has the latest from the campaign trail. richard: both hillary clinton and donald trump were off the campaign trail, clinton in seclusion prepping for

news, critics say they show that clinton's tough talk about wall street in public got a lot less tough in private. another has aides expressing frustration with clinton's unwillingness to be forthcoming about her private email server. two weeks later, she sat down with abc's david muir and said this. ms. clinton: that was a mistake. i'm sorry about that. richard: and with campaign rhetoric likely to intensify, a firebombing at a republican headquarters in north carolina this weekend shocked the candidates. clinton tweeting, ?the attack on the oran c horrific and unacceptable.? and though there's been no arrest, trump tweeting, ?animals representing hillary clinton and dems in north carolina just firebombed our office in orange county because we are winning.? richard cantu, abc news, new york. cherise: tomorrow, president bill clinton will campaign for hillary clinton in new hampshire. he'll stop at dartmouth college in hanover for a democratic party organizing event at 11:30 a.m. then, president clinton will visit keene state college at 2:15.

today marks a somber anniversary for the city of manchester, the state and the entire law enforcement community far and wide. 10 years ago, manchester police officer michael briggs was shot in the head while responding to a call. he died the next day. michael addison was convicted of capital murder and is now appealing his death sentence. the manchester police department planned a private memorial to honor their fallen officer and as wmur's jean mackin shows us, they honor him each and every day. jean: deep inside the manchester police department, deion to the front doors and into the locker room reserved only for sworn officers, there is a single blue locker, badge number 83 on the door, along with the marine corps emblem. it was, and always will be,

day as they start a new shift it was sealed 10 years ago when briggs was laid to rest. carried from the old police station to the new police station bearing his name. >> we wrote letters and sentiments and we put them inside his locker and then we fielded, and we now -- sealed it and we now have a padlock on it jean: there are reminders of officer brigg's sacrifice here. the memorial carved in granite out front. the plaque in the lobby. a somber row of officers killed in the line of duty. the date no one here will ever forget, shot on october 16, 2006 responding to a domestic disturbance. he died the next day. >> mike left his wife, his

cherise: commitment 2016 now, and tonight we take a closer look at an issue that is weighing on many people's minds, while emptying out their bank accounts. granite staters have some of the highest student debt in america, and experts say in general, it is a major drag on the economy. wmur political reporter adam sexton takes a closer look tonight. adam: the pressure and expectations that come with attending college are well known to anyone seeking higher education. but for almost two decades now, there's been an added burden on those working toward a degree, out of control student debt. >> my sister is paying almost $500 and she just reggie waited. -- just graduated. >> per month. adam: like so many, nicholas is worried.

really good career. adam: the project on student debt ranks new hampshire 2nd in the country for average student loan debt with over $33,000 per student. 76% of college students in new hampshire leave school in debt, the highest percentage of the nation. >> student debt clearly has an impact, and it's had a bigger impact since the great recession. adam: market analyst brian gottlob has studied the issue generation. >> it's delayed young individuals, college graduates, from entering the housing market, from starting their own households and their own families. it's also had an impact on things like entrepreneurship, taking risks, even buying new cars. adam: gottlob says the indebtedness extends to student families as well, with those in the middle class taking the biggest hit. >> for a lot of middle income

and financial aid, different financial aid packages, so they wind up bearing a larger portion of the cost of their education. adam: it certainly doesn't get any easier farther down the socioeconomic ladder. here at the new hampshire higher education assistance foundation , they say the state has yet another dubious distinction when it comes to help or lack thereof for new hampshire's neediest students. >> new hampshire, as a state, is one of two states that doesn't provide any need-based aid to students in the state of new georgia being the other state. adam: v.p. of college planning tori berube says many in-state students are now adjusting their education options based on cost. >> community colleges. we see a lot of students looking to start at a community college, as well as looking at schools perhaps like the southern new hampshire university advantage program, where they attend a campus for the day and go home at night.

remains that college degree, even if getting it means digging into a life-altering financial hole. >> it's almost like you're not even graduating because you have to continue to pay for it until you are fully out of debt. adam: for unh seniors like valerie diaz and yvonne cristy, graduation is right around the corner and with it, monthly payments into the forseeable future. >> education is very important, and i understand having to pay for it, but it's not fair right now. adam: >> now, your storm watch forecast. josh: today a little bit warmer as remitted to the upper 60's and even several spots reaching 70 or higher. 71 in fort smith. -- fort smith -- portsmith.

speaking of which, we have a little bit in the air right now. there are some rainfall just north of lakes region and some scattered singles in a few spots. that is likely what you will see for the rest of the evening in southern new hampshire. southern new hampshire, the threat remains on and off for spreckels or light showers overnight. you might still see some spreckels or clouds for the commute. we will widen the view and show you a preview of the week ahead. these temperatures here in the 70's at this late hour and they bring the 70's to us for the next three days. all at least in the 70's with an outside chance on tuesday or
