erin: now on "daybreak" -- it is time to vote. here are live pictures from manchester, where the polls are opening right now and people are starting to line up. and we could see record turnout today. sean: the first votes have already been cast. we will break down the results from midnight voting in three new hampshire communities. elizabeth: it is election day in america. i am in washington with a look at the wild -- to the . kevin: and mild temperatures for election day, with sunshine. when the readings will tumble, in your forecast ahead. hampshire. it is here, election day. thanks for joining us. i'm erin fehlau. sean: good morning. i'm sean mcdonald. the. open across new hampshire. we will keep an i on that and have results from the midnight votes in just a minute. it seems like weather will not be a factor today. kevin: not much of a wind. temperatures are chilly if you are headed out early. we should be in the upper 50's to lower 60's this afternoon, hardly a cloud in the sky. there is a little ground fog in some of the lower lying valleys. some of the temperatures which start in the 20's to lower 30's eventually get to between 57 and 63 this afternoon. sunshine with light winds is going to feel good through the afternoon. all the changes coming up in just a bit, but let's took a look -- let's take a look at your morning drive here in the granite state. we're joined live by 95.7 wzid's deb davidson. good morning, deb.

and 93 are moving well to get you to your destination as you start your morning commute. we're not seeing any delays as you make your way onto the everett turnpike or spaulding turnpike. if you are commode -- communing along the seacoast, interstate 95 is looking great in both directions. many places in new hampshire will have new traffic patterns, so be aware of them as you head out to vote. from the wzid traffic network, i am deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. erin: after a year and a half of campaign e finally arrived, and the first votes have already been counted. here in the granite state -- sean: a total of three communities in new hampshire cast ballots at midnight. in hart's location, hillary clinton edged out donald trump, leading a democratic sweep in town -- though nearly every race was fairly close. millsfield also voted at midnight, and the polls were open for less than 15 minutes. republicans easily carried each

erin: but the first votes announced were in dixville notch. wmur's siobhan lopez takes a look at those results. siobhan: history is made in more ways than one here in dixville notch as the first ballots are cast in the 2016 general election. >> midnight. siobhan: at the stroke of midnight, eight ballots are dropped into the box. four years comes around real -- >> four years, around really fast. siobhan: and their results come in even faster. notch voters choose hillary clinton over donald trump 4-2. one vote for gary johnson, and a write-in for former massachusetts governor and 2012 republican nominee mitt romney. the town moderator says this is the first time he's known there to be a write-in candidate so high on the ticket. >> i'm really excited. it was a thrill to be a part of this historic event. it really is amazing. siobhan: nancy depalma helped make the night even more historic by becoming the first voter in dixville notch to

vermont, depalma is one of two registered democrats in town casting her vote for hillary clinton. nancy: she's strong, she's got the experience. siobhan: not everyone is open to sharing who they vote for, but longtime dixville voter peter johnson calls himself a conservative thinker. peter: i really believe we have to get rid of the influence of big money in washington. siobhan: down the ballot, it's neck and neck for the senate and the second congressional district races. and in the race for the corner office, republican chris sununu, the only candidate in dixville notch for the vote, edges out colin van ostern by four votes. mr. sununu: we're going to have back-to-back great nights, and it all starts in dixville. siobhan: it all ends once the polls close tuesday evening. dixville notch voters want the rest of the state to follow their lead of 100% voter turnout. >> it's a little town. we all got up in the middle of the night to vote. the rest of you guys can at least spend a little bit of time during your day and get out and vote. siobhan: the town moderator says whether or not their results are

state or the country will vote -- he says it really comes down to the toss of a coin. reporting in dixville notch, siobhan lopez, wmur news 9. sean: thanks. while the voting is done in those three communities, in most places the polls don't open until 6:00 or 7:00 this morning. erin: wmur's ray brewer is live this morning from manchester's ward one. and, ray, things are likely -- are already starting to get busy there. ray: they are, and i in here at 6:00. you can see we already have long lines here. election officials expecting very high voter turnout. the secretary of state is predicting nearly 740,000 ballots will be cast in new hampshire, which could make it a record. if you are headed out to the polls, make sure to bring photo i.d. and also remember there is a new law. you cannot wear campaign paraphernalia inside the voting places. some communities have added

get inside, in an effort to move the process along. and while there are no specific threats here in new hampshire, the state emergency operations center will be active all day, just in case something happens. >> no we're not anticipating any problems. been working very closely with our police department. they are very good. they're on top of things. expecting very large turnout, and they're prepared for that, as well as our public works department. ray: if you have questions or cola general's election hotline at 866-868-3703. that's 866-868-3703. it will be staffed from 7:00 this morning until 8:00 tonight. and as you can see behind me, election officials are expecting today to be very busy. they are asking for a little patience as well. reporting live from ward one in manchester ray brewer, wmur news , 9.

obviously the biggest race today. and the candidates used every minute to campaign and reach voters in battleground states like new hampshire. abc's elizabeth hur takes a look at the frantic finish. elizabeth: good morning to you. it all comes down to this. for both trump and clinton, it is all about voter turnout, and that is why they are leaving nothing to chance and campaigning to the very last minute. dueling rallies kicking off decision day in america. mr. trump: so it's now officially tuesday, november 8. mrs. clinton: well, i got to tell you, this is sure worth staying up for. elizabeth: just after midnight, more famous friends joining hillary clinton at her final rally in north carolina -- >> ? living on a prayer ? elizabeth: while donald trump made his closing arguments in michigan with running mate mike pence, arguing he doesn't need any big names to win, pointing to his standing-room-only

leaving everything to voters. mr. trump: we will make america safe again. and we will make america great again. mrs. clinton: there is no reason, my friends, why america's best days are not ahead of us, if we reach for them together. elizabeth: and so millions may be headed to the polls t campaigns are focused on is 270. that is how many electoral college votes you need to win the white house. sean: the u.s. senate race between republican kelly ayotte and democrat maggie hassan is one of the most-watched and most expensive in the country, and both candidates were busy on the final day of campaigning. erin: hassan actually introduced president obama during his rally at unh yesterday afternoon, and urged support for democrats up and down the ticket. ayotte toured the state in a

dozen communities. sen. ayotte just because i want : to get out and meet and earn -- and answer their questions, here what is on their mind and , earn their support heading into this election tomorrow. gov. hassan: are you ready to knock on more doors? are you ready to keep working to ensure a brighter future for all americans? yes. erin: wide open, and a lot of voters say they spent the last few days making up their minds when it -- trying to make up their minds. both democrat colin van ostern and republican chris sununu currently serve as executive councilors, and they both say that they are confident about the results. sean: the race for new hampshire's first congressional district features two familiar faces and an independent challenger. shawn o'connor is running for elected office for the first time, while this is the fourth time that republican frank guinta and democrat carol shea

kevin: tuesday morning, november 8. beautiful sunshine and after a chilly start, and mild afternoon. temperatures in the low 60's a couple of shower chances as well. the details coming up. sean: a cold start to the day. new hampshire is a key battleground state in the presidential race, and both campaigns have focused a lot of attention on the granite state in recent days, as you know. but new hampshire could swing on one city. erin: claremont is traditionally a democratic stronghold, but donald trump has worked hard to try and swing voters, and it appears to be working. earlier this year, he held one of the biggest political rallies in the history of the city, and analysts say signs point to a

what should be a mild day. temperatures upper 50's to lower 60's. mount washington is not going to quite get to that level today. they will probably be in the upper 40's later this afternoon. but it will be a banner day for your election day. almost nothing but sunshine into the afternoon. it comes with the milder temperatures out there, a passing shower or two a possibility tomorrow morning. that will be the leading edge of cooler air that will gradually continue to take steps backward. t thursday. the coldest air likely peeking over the weekend. for the time being, sunshine out there. a little bit of ground fault in some of the lower lying valleys. some high clouds drifting in after midnight and a thin line of showers moving through, mainly tomorrow morning. temperatures in the 20's to lower 30's. as i mentioned, we are in the low and mid 40's atop mount washington early this morning. by far, the warm spot across the

we are getting reports of very heavy traffic volume in and around polling places. patterns are in place in many of the locations, and they are asking for your patience and to not let that deter you from voting today. this report is being brought to you by minuteman health. i'm deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. erin: now back to our election day coverage. some granite staters had the honor of being the first in the nation to cast their ballots. sean: that is right. midnight voting was held in dixville notch, millsfield, and hart's location. wmur's siobhan lopez was in dixville notch as the ballots were counted. siobhan: a night of firsts here in dixville notch as new hampshire continues to be the focus of the start of election day. eight ballots are cast -- seven in person, and one absentee voter. hillary clinton edged out donald trump 4-2, with one vote for gary johnson and a write-on for former massachusetts governor and 2012 republican nomimee mitt romney. the town moderator says this is

ticket. another first -- nancy depalma became the first dixville notch voter to participate in same-day registration. nancy: i really didn't think it was going to be that big of a deal for me to do this last minute, but i'm really excited. it was a thrill to be a part of this historic event. it really is amazing. siobhan: dixville notch keeping the tradition of 100% voter turnout. they hope that number grows as the construction at the ball some resort. reporting in dixville notch, siobhan lopez, wmur news 9. as we mentioned, voters in millsfield and hart's location also cast their ballots at midnight. here's a look at those results. in hart's location, hillary clinton got 17 votes, donald trump got 14, and gary johnson got three. in the governor's race, colin van ostern got 21 votes, and chris sununu got 15. in the u.s. senate race, maggie hassan got 21 votes, and kelly ayotte 17. and in the first congressional

got 21 votes, frank guinta 10, and shawn o'connor eight. now for the millsfield results. in the presidential race, donald trump got 16 votes and hillary clinton got four. 18 people voted for chris sununu in the governor's race, and three voted for colin van ostern. in the u.s. senate race, kelly ayotte got 16 votes and maggie hassan got three. and in the second congressional district, jim lawrence got 16 votes and annie kuster got four. erin: as people prepare to head to the polls today, state officials say the voter turnout could set a state record. and ray brewer joins us live now at ward one in manchester to -- you have already seen some pretty long lines there, right, right? ray: you can see the line behind me, stretching out the door here at ward one, webster school in manchester. the secretary of state

8000 people will cast ballots in new hampshire today. during the 2012 presidential election, about 718,000 granite staters turned out. new hampshire's emergency operations center will be active as long as the polls are open, ready to respond to any potential physical or virtual threats. when you arrive at the polls, you will need a photo i.d. to vote. a reminder you cannot wear any campaign paraphernalia. and you can still register if you haven't done so already. across the state are expected to be very busy today. >> you're going to have larger than suspected crowds, or larger than normal crowds, so that's going to add to the confusion. there is a little bit of chaos, maybe. but for the most part there's no , specific threat to new hampshire, but obviously this is an important time for our country, so we have to be aware of any threat that might happen. ray: if you run into any trouble at the polls, special hotlines have been set up. you can call 1-866-voter-03 or

someone who is going to look you in the eye and give you the straight story, bring all ideas to the table each time regardless of background? mr. van ostern: i am working hard, and i will always put people ahead of political interests. that is where he usually work in new hampshire even when national politics are sometimes a mess. that is what i will commit to doing as governor. sean: new hampshire's u.s. senate race has been one of the most expensive and closely watched races in the nation. the outcome of this race could help determine the balance of power in the u.s. senate. incumbent republican senator kelly ayotte and her democratic challenger maggie hassan were both out late last night campaigning for votes in new -- campaigning for votes. erin: in new hampshire's first congressional district, three candidates are vying for a seat in the u.s. house. republican incumbent frank guinta hopes voters will recognize his experience. democrat carol shea porter is looking to retake the seat that she's held before. and independent shawn o'connor is running for elected office for the first time. rep. guinta: i've gotten six pieces of legislation signed into law by this president just

kevin: it is tuesday morning, november 8, your election day, starting with sunshine, but it is chilly. temperatures in the 20's to lower 30's early, but climbing into the 80's to 60's with a light wind and sunshine for your afternoon. cooler days are ahead, alongwi coming up. sean: today is election day, of course, and people all across the country will be casting their ballots in the presidential race. nikole killion is live in washington. millions of people have already cast their vote. what is the latest tally from the early voting? nikole: nearly 45 million people have cast their ballots in early voting, and we have seen pretty strong turnout in critical battleground states.

was four years ago. that could potentially bode well for hillary clinton, who has been seeking big numbers from the constituency. however, donald trump's campaign is downplaying the impact. they are suggesting it still expects to get a good share of those votes. sean: lots of key races in play that could change the balance of power. what should we watch out for? nikole: obviously, we are looking closely at what happens with congress. you know, the fat happens with the presidential contest. for instance, democrats really hoping that if hillary clinton wins big, that they have a shot at flipping the senate. i only need a couple of seats. we are going to be watching some of those critical races, including in the granite state, and pennsylvania, wisconsin, florida, where marco rubio is running for reelection. in terms of the house, it is going to be a much tougher fight

especially given the republicans have such a large majority there. we do expect that to hold. sean: in some cases it is not just about casting a vote, it is about making a fashion statement, right? nikole: that is right. there are some big movements online with supporters of both hillary clinton and donald trump. for instance, clinton supporters are actually promoting pantsuits to the polls, encouraging people to wear hillary clinton's signature outfit today when they cast their ballots if they are supporting her. movement called operation red, encouraging supporters to wear red to the polls. sean: nikole killion and washington. thank you. erin: 21 dogs are recovering this morning after being rescued from a home in croyden. the chihuahuas and chihuahua mixes are now at the animal rescue league of new hampshire in bedford. the dogs range in age from three weeks old to seniors. many of them are in rough shape, and the rescue league says it could take weeks before they are available for adoption. >> these guys look much better. >> quite a few of them would be

special home that's willing to take a dog that is wobbly, that is blind, that maybe has an amputation. erin: not only do some of the dogs need medical attention, the rescue league says all of them need dental work. sean: an entire mall in cambridge, massachusetts was evacuated last night after a large crowd gathered for an event featuring a rapper and pro basketball player. rapper designer and boston celtics forward jaylen brown were scheduled to meet fanat galleria mall. police say more than a thousand people showed up. and when the event didn't start as scheduled, the situation took a chaotic turn. they say the crowd became hostile and started throwing things at them as officers tried to clear the scene. the officers used pepper spray to disperse the crowd. >> i was there the whole time. and it just -- it just went wrong, all in five minutes time

there is a better way to disperse the crowd then to use mace on these young kids. they had to be between the ages of 13 and 16. as a result, everyone had to suffer from it. sean: police say six juveniles were arrested for disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and trespassing. erin: turning now to sports -- the boston bruins hosted the buffalo sabres at the td garden last night. there was no scoring through the first period. but in the second, brad marchand finally scored a goal for boston on a power play, and the bruins finally scored a goal for boston on a power play, and the bruins david krejci scored another power play goal, and the bruins went on to win it 4-0. tuuka rask got the shutout with 32 saves. the bruins are right back on the ice tonight. and they are going to play the canadiens at 7:30. sean: major league baseball announced the three finalists for each of their major postseason awards. mookie betts, after his tremendous second season is an , mvp finalist in the american league, along with mike trout of the angels, and houston's jose altuve. rick porcello led the american league in wins this year.

but today you cannot beat it. erin: seriously the greater , 60's. nashua habitat for humanity has announced how much money was raised at its third annual dream builders gala. the event, held last month, brought in nearly $68,000. the money will be used for building, renovating, and repairing homes for local families in need. sean: very nice. police in australia made an unusual find while searching a woman's bag. they found a baby koala inside. yeah, that thing. officers say when they asked the woman if she had anything to declare, she handed over a canvas bag with the koala. koala the night before. the animal, believed to be about six months old, was taken to a wildlife hospital in good health. he has been named alfred. i just -- we cannot follow the logic that this woman would find the baby koala and stuff it into the back. erin: it is so cute. how could you leave it there? it is an adorable animal. it is now 6:51.
