right now on wncn news at 11, likely tornadoes a damaging homes and farmlands. heavy rain and strong winds covering every angle from the storms as we get a first look at the damage. good evening, i am sharon tazewell. >> and i am sean maroney. thank you for joining us. thousands are still without power in our stay. here are the latest numbers from duke energy from some of the hardest hit areas. 2300 and wake county, 1500 in orange and a thousand and grandville. duke hoping to have things back to normal overnight. >> this is the biggest severe weather operate we have seen in years, we have team coverage right now with michael hyland and amy cutler both getting a firsthand look of the extensive damage in vincennes granville county spread we start with a chief meteorologist, bill reh with the -- wes hohenstein with the latest on the

the good news is the severe weather threat is over, but yes this is the biggest severe weather outbreak we have had since april 2011. a year ago we had snow on the ground, we can half a half ago we had snow and sleet. but tonight the radar is dry. remember this started as heavy rain before the sun came up, and then things really got cooking this afternoon. the national weather service here in raleigh, issued 21 tornado warnings today for central north carolina. all of last year, they issued five. an incredible outbreak today. that is tonight, it has cleared out, but more changes are on the way tomorrow. as for tonight, in the overnight hours, look at our current wind gusts it is still a windy evening, and these winds will not be a strong as we headed to the overnight hours but it is to want to be breezy, including when you head out the door tomorrow morning. the warm front that moved

way up there to the north. now we wait on a cold front that will move through and drop our temperatures tomorrow. yes, you see snow back to the west but that is not our snow, we have dry weather tomorrow but it will be chilly, the sun is up at 6:51, mid 40s by six and 7 a.m., but with the breeze that will feel like 37, at 6 a.m. it will feel like 36 at 7 a.m., we go from severe storms today to wind chills tomorrow morning, guess what? this is not even the coldest morning we still have a ways to go. we will talk about how cold and some of the amazing pictures from after the storm coming up in just a few minutes. our team coverage starts in granville county where the sheriff believes a possible tornado moved west from granville east into vance county. a home there, up for more than 100 years suffered significant damage. wncn's michael hyland talk with people who say this is one of

bricks they have ever witnessed. >>reporter:the power has been out here for several hours and it's easy to see why. take a look here, trees snapped all along the streets. some landing on power lines. neighbors took pictures as the storm came through and say they are thankful they were not her. it was around 4:45 and crystal west new she had to get her kids to safety. >> when i got them into the bathroom, under the mattress i could see a touchdown. it was crazy, smoke just came up and you could see the 10 flying in circles and siding from other houses, insulation from other homes, it was circling all the way around us. >>reporter: they emerged from their home in vance county to find us across the street. another home that had been in their family for over 100 years, torn apart >> it is the place where my grandma grew up in, we always -- it's destroyed now. >>reporter:they brought us over for a closer look. pieces of the 10 roof here scattered in neighboring yards >> it was one of the scariest things i think i've ever been there in my life >>reporter:they have been

not like this >> nothing has ever hit this close to home. that's ever destroyed anything that meant something to us >>reporter: the west say the piece of the family history may be gone but they are relieved nobody got hurt. >> we are thankful that us and our kids and our families are okay >>reporter:in vance county, michael hyland, trying to this was a scene in oxford, where that tornado is believed to have started a man there tells wncn's amy color he could have been dead, as he went to the grocery store as a tornado moved through. >> you can see the significant damage there, all of his belongings thrown into the yard, the heavy branches down on the ground. police tape up to protect us from the debris. amy cutler is gathering more information from there now from the north to the south of damage visible in moore county, but not as extensive party can see this big tree

onto a truck -- truck and trailer and snapped a power line. thankfully no one was hurt, but cruz did work for several hours to repay it. repair it. -- repair it. you can see a huge metal canopy there it blew away in hit power lines. no injuries and no power outages from this. crews have things back to normal within an hour. early this afternoon storms force people to hunker down in durham county. >> this is what they walked out to, downed trees and down power lines. our team coverage continues with wncn's mario been tracking the damage as well as the recovery. >>reporter:it's been a wildlife or wild life for residents of tanglewood subdivision here in northern durham county. the folks here have spent much of the night without power, and let me show you why. the strong storms that barreled through here, knockdown trees, of course that brought down power lines, and you can see some of the trees came crashing into some of the homes here along trevor circle.

reports of injuries, but tonight some of the residents here are making plans to stay elsewhere until this mess is cleaned up. back here on the ground in tanglewood subdivision, those workers you see up there trying to clear the rest of those branches he for any more power lines come down. i can tell you it has been several hours since we have had those storms roll through this area, and even now there is still a very strong smell of pine, in the air, from those downed trees. we will be here all night monitoring any developments here in this neighborhood wewe will have more beginning on the news in the morning at 4:30 a.m. reporting from northern durham county, marty boone, trying to this was a scene in north raleigh where a large tree came down on top of a community center. people connected with the center tell us no one was there when the tree hit the building

artwork inside that artist were trying to sell that was destroyed per they will bring out contractors to see how extensive the repairs will need to be this all happen in wake county during the evening rush, check out lewisburg road near 540, the traffic lights were out for a well, we saw several close calls but unfortunately no accidents. crews have the lights back on and just a couple of hours. in wayne county, surveillance cameras capture the star moving through particular get this with us, you can see it here, the storm eventually ripping off the roof of this home coming there on that surveillance video. that mobile home with a family inside >> imagine this, they are all okay after all of that. but as wncn's david hurst reports it's about much more than you see here are james coley was watching from his window as a surveillance camera picked up *-asterisk winds ripping a roof off a nearby mobile home. >> at that point i took cover >>reporter:four people were home when the roof came home -- off, a mother and her four daughters, nobody was injured. >> and then he saw the black

elementary this morning, schools dismiss three hours early, parents we talked to said it was a smart plan. >> i was concerned for their safety, because we have had tornadoes come through here before, and i am glad i am having the opportunity to get out early. >> more photos and images from today, the duke basketball team tweeted out this photo when the storm moved over durham. >> them, as well as duke employees took cover. this picture is from a tunnel underneath cameron indoor stadium. more images from durham, you are looking at duke's campus, dave harding with the blue devil network tweeted this justice to just -- just as soon as the storm passed around 5 o'clock. fortunately, no reports of injuries and those students coming out for the unc game they were able to take cover a bit more substantial than those tent. in chapel hill, students cover the sirens with a tornado warning there taking cover in the basement of the undergraduate library. they sent us these photos, if severe weather strikes your

your photos or videos whenever it is safe to do so. either through social media or you can e-mail us. while there has been no reported deaths here in north carolina, sadly that is not the case of virginia. >> three people are dead after a tornado touched down in the town of waverley. this is about 45 miles south east of richmond. authorities say the tornado destroyed a mobile home killing a child, and two men. several other homes also suffered significant damage for per destruction of site that is difficult to put in words. [inaudible] >> it got real dark, real quick. so much debris. all you could do was look away and keep the glass from getting in your eye. >> i see nothing like that. >> state police say several roads in southeast virginia are impassable, due to the storm damage.

remember, today's storms are bringing back scary moments for those of us who were around here in 2011, it was a very busy day for a lot of us. it was in april when several tornadoes touched down in our area. >> this is video of some of the damage left behind from the storms you see how significant it was. tran ones are jonathan rodriguez talk to one man whose business was like to buy those tornadoes. >>reporter:it is a cool spot to get your catch of the day. for 46 years, raleigh has been serving it up fresh, except for one year. some of it was a scary day. >>reporter:it was 2011 and wake county was expecting tornadoes, dan stewart remembers wind and rain pounding his store, outside was a man and his daughter. >> we got the door open, we told the little kid and the father come on inside were they came inside we got the door shut, we closed a just-in- time. it was shaking really bad. we told everybody go in the back, everybody was scared. >>reporter:stewart says the tornado slammed right through his roof. >> i will tell you it sounds just like a train coming through here.

water was coming down. the side of the building with a bricks and everything. >>reporter:the damage left his shop gutted like a fish. >> there was a big old hole in the top of the building. on the one side it was tore off. >>reporter:it took them a year to rebuild but they did, now every tornado warning make stewart uneasy. >> kind of like when it shakes a little bit, it scares me a little bit. >>reporter:for now, he's keeping his eyes to the sky. >> one day i will never forget. i will never forget that day. i just thank god i did not get hurt. >>reporter:jonathan rodriguez, trying to a lot of comparisons back to april of 2011, there were 30 tornadoes that touched down across the whole state that they, 30 and one day but that was in april. today, is still february, very unusual to have the type of severe weather we had today, when as i mentioned earlier, we

the ground. a year ago we had snow on the ground, today the national weather service in raleigh issued 21 tornadoes, and all of last year there was only five tornado warnings. 21 warnings issued just today only five all of last year. incredible information to absorb as we get ready to start march sleep. tonight, we can sound the all clear, the radar is dry, but now we turn our attention to a return to february like temperatures. it is really warm out there right now, 60 roanoke rapids, but you see this cold air up in the mountains that will filter in here, and you will feel that tomorrow morning and throughout the day. we will have sunshine the -- tomorrow, the radar we can shut it off as we have dry weather. 45degrees when you head out the door tomorrow morning for that will feel like 37. 47 at 9 a.m. feel like 40, that we jump into the 50s. remember, our high today was 73 degrees. and tomorrow 54 will be our high and it gets even colder tomorrow night into friday morning.

com. last night was a warm front that push through that warmed us up today. there is that warm front way up there to the north. there is a cold front that will push through that takes us to the 70's today to highs in the 40s and 50s over the next couple of days. really, the next week is all about temperature forecasting, because we do not have any right to talk about. let's talk temperatures for tomorrow we will pick it up with highs in the 50s. in some of us might not get out of the 40s by the time we get into friday. look where we wind up saturday morning. from 70s today to 20s on saturday. from there we start into a warm up a warm-up that would take us into the 60s by the time we get into monday. that is not going to last either because we have another shot of cold air and we have to wait for it, it will be here as we head into the end of next week. of course, march starts next week. by the end of next week we might have a day where highs are only in the 40s. a lot of temperature swings

next seven days. tomorrow is one of those temperature swings. with sunny skies and no rain in the forecast look for a high of 50 for degrees, 53 in durham, and a high of 58 in fayetteville, and your seven day forecast will take us -- let's go back to days, remember two days ago was in the 40s, we jumped into the 70s today, and now we go back down to 54 tomorrow. a high of 50 on friday with sunny skies, 49 on saturday. and i mentioned tomorrow morning's temperatures in the 40s, with wind chills in the 30s, but friday morning we started 32, saturday morning 28 degrees. not much warmer sunday morning, 33, but we will warm-up on sunday with a high of 60, then we get into next week with mid 60s monday, and we hang right around the 60- degree mark tuesday, and wednesday. very thankful we did not have some of the disasters the gulf coast had and our friends up in virginia had.

i think we got lucky. t but fortunately nobody is seriously injured in our area you get we are very lucky for that. >> the sun is out tomorrow. >> thank you. a big weather day, a big news day today, an autopsy providing details tonight about a death of a mother and her son in a roseville home. back in december kristy byron initially started the fire at a home on role saddle diapered with her from the autopsy report that her 3-year-old son tyler was founded two plastic zip ties around his neck and burns on his body. authorities say kristi byron was found with metal -- melted plastic pieces around her neck, they ruled her death a suicide. the autopsy report also confirms that a gas cam was also found outside the master bedroom. the second child survived the fire and was taken to unc hospitals. state lawmakers are working on a bill that could make it easier for patients to have

a legislative committee looks at a bill that would put some regulations on what's called step therapy. it requires patience to try cheaper medications to see if they were, even if their doctor prescribed the much expensive drive. the bill would provide exceptions in certain circumstances. >> i have children, have grandchildren, people in all parts of my family are affected by this disease. i hope that the drugs that are being developed today will help them have a better quality of life. >> some of those exceptions include if the patient has tried the drug before and it hasn't worked. lawmakers could take the belt later this year. it is an exciting time for us here at wncn are you on monday, it's right around the corner, will officially be our new home for cbs news and programming >> we will because cbs north carolina, one of the new shows you will see in prime time. also in prime time the hit show elementary starring johnny lee miller as detective sherlock holmes.
