those big new details overnight in the investigation into that attack. the first picture of syed farook returning to the u.s. with his new wife. new details of what happened ininside theonference room during the deadly attack. we have full team coverage. abc's brian ross starts us off with the very latest. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, robin. a collective sigh of relief for counterterrorism officials in los angeles who had braced for a terror attack all day sunday baseddn an intelligence report from iraq that is had plannean unspecified attack there. today, u.s. agents around the world are urgently trying to track the backgrounds and contacts of the killers. this photo, obtained by abc news, was taken in c chicago wn the newly married couple arrived in the u.s. for the first time in july 2014. as the fbi discovered in a raid of the couple's home, they tried to hide their tracks by

although syed farook did leave behind his voice on a pne answering g system. >> syed farook. >> is not available. >> reporter: the voice of a killer. >> syed farook. >> reporter: but authorities believe he was radicalized by his 29-year-old wife tashfeen malik. who he met on a matrimonial website. she was born in pakistan. moved to saudi arabia. and then returned to pakistan for college to become a a armacist. >> she was among the talented ststudents oher class. hard working. >> reporter: the mystery of her evolution from brilliant student and mother of a baby girl to cold-blooded terrorist firing at police from the back of this suv, declaring allegiance to isis, remains a key toto this investigation. >> maybe she sought out a spouse that shared some of the same ideology that she knew she could possibly groom into doing what she was interested in doing. >> reporter: now the race is on

it was 2:00 in the morning when an fbi s.w.a.t. team broke down the doors s of the he of the man who provided the high-powered rifles used in the attack. he's been identified as enrique marquez. a one-time licensed security guard who lived next door to farook as they grew up. >> they were very close friends. very close. of anybody i in the nehborhood, enque was the closest to syed. >> reporter: marquez bought the two assault weapons that somehow ended up in the handsf farook in november 2011 and february 2012. farook bought the two pistols at about the same time in san diego, november 2011 and january 2012. farook also bought more than 6,000 bullets online, a purchase not routinely passed on to the fbi. there is no indication this morning that the friend was involved in the attack, but agents are pursuing anyone with any connection to farook, including his father, syed sr. authorities tell abc news now has been put on the terror watch

him from leaving the country. >> on the list. we're going to turn to president obama. only the third oval office address of his presidency, he called the massacre a terrorist attack for the first time and warned against turning that conflict into a war against muslims here at home and around the world. abc's jon karl is at the white house with more on the president's strategy. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. the president said the terrorist threat has, quote, evolved into a new phase, and for the first time, he called the san bernardino massacre a terrorist act that was likely inspired by isis. >> we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home. but it is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization. so this was an act of terrorism, designed to kill innocent people. >> reporter: addressing the nation from the oval office, the president dended his administration's efforts to o

irs strategto combat isis abroad. >> here's what i want you to know. the threat from terrorism is real. but we w will overme it. we will destroy isil and any other organization that tries to harm us. eporter: the president called for a review of the visa program that one of the san bernardino attackers used to come to the u.s. and he once again called for tighter gun laws. >> our intelligence and law enforcement agencies, no matter how effective they are, cannot identify every would-be mass shooter. whether that individual is motivated by isil or some other hateful ideology. what we can do and must do is make it harder for them to kill. >> reporter: the president also answswered hisritics who called for a war against radical islam. he itead labeled isis a cult of death that does not represent muslims. >> we cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be

and islam. that does not mean denying that an extremist ideology has spread within some muslim communities. it's a real problem. muslims must confront it without excuse. >> reporter: the president urged americans not to demonize muslims in the united states. they're our friends, neighbors, and our co-workers. as for the president's republican critics, robin, they said the president offered no new strategy on how to defeat isis. >> we're going to talk about that, jon. thank you. terrorism is now the top issue in the race for the white house. the candidates were quick to react to the president's speech. donald tru even live-tweeting throughout it. abc's tom llamas has that story fofor us. >> reporter: this morning democratic presidential front-runner hillary clinton echoing republicans, saying the u. needs to do more in taking on isi >> well, we're not winning. but it's too soon to say that we are doing everything we need to do. >> reporter: the former secretary of state calling on facebook, youtube, and twitter,

isis by limiting the terror network's outreach online. and clinton explaining to george why she's refusing to use the phrase radical islam when discussing the topic. >> well, t the probl is that that sounds like we are declaring waagainst a religion. >> reporter: donald trump not minneapolising his words saying we need to profile and monitor some mosques. >> people are dead. a lot of people are dead. everybody wants to be politically correct. that's part of the problem we have with our country. >> reporter: trump saying the recent terror attacks shows we need to arm more americans. and he knows what he would have done if he was in that room in san bernardi. >> i can tell you one thing. if i'm in there and i have a gun, we're going down shooting. we're going to knock 'em out. okay? one way or the other. >> reporter: senator ted cruz, surging in iowa, may be trying to outtrump trump. he's out with this ad full of tough talk. >> and every iamic militant will know, if you wage jihad against us, you're signing your death warrant.

tweets, trump was live-tweeting during the president's address. these tweets caught our eye. here's one, well, obama refused to say, he just can't say it, that we're at war with radical islamic terrorists. and also this one, obama said in his speech that muslims are our sports heroes. what sport is he talking about and who is he profiling? he seems to have forgotten about kareem abdul-jabbar and muhammad ali. george. >> thank you, tom. we're joined now by republican presidential candidate dr. ben carson. thank you for joining us again. in your statement after the president's speech, you said we need real solutions, not empty rhetoric. so, how specifically wouldld your war strategye different from president obama's? >> first of all, i would not be spending a lot of time talking about what we're not going to do, and i would not be talking about how the american people are afraid. i think what's going on is that

they're frustrated is because, you know, we won't even use the words islamic terrorists. >> but what would you do that president obama is not doing? >> so, that's what i'm getting to. so, my point is that the attitude has to be different. we have to have a commander in chief who is willing to come out forcefully against this so that the american people have confidence that something is being done. that means i would be talking about using the banking systemems and all the monetary mechanisms available. >> but isn't that what president obama is doing? >> well, hold on. one of the ways that they're able to take care of those people is through monetary mechanisms. if we frustrate them so they can't get money to people -- >> your rival, senator ted cruz, sa we should go further,

>> dr. carson, thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you so much, george. >> waiting for more answers from dr. carson. >> we are. we're going to turn now, thou, to the victims of the terror attacks. they were remembered at special sunday services all around san bernardino and around the country. and this morning, we're learning new details about the attack. what happened inside that conference room as more stories for the tragedy emerge. abc's cecilia vega has been in san bernardino all weekend. and she joins us now with the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. even now it's still a crime scene here. we now know what happened in this building behind me was a work training and an annual holiday party that turned into four minutes of sheer terror. >> we have several down in a conference room. several down. >> reporter: this morning, new details from inside that conference room. one witness telling abc news, the room was a lararge space packed with tables, a movie screen, a podium on one side for

a christmas tree on the other. syed farook and tashfeen malik wearing tactical gear and carrying extra ammo burst in through this door at the center of the conference room opening fire, blowing out windows and striking many of the people at this table, the very table farook had been sitting at earlieier playing trivia games with his co-workers. he left his jacket behind, saying he would be right back. the only other escape, a door at the opposite e of the room. the couple unloading at least 65 rounds. people taking cover anywhere they could. at least one survivor jumping through the shattered windows. amanda gaspard hid under a table, closed her eyes, and didn't move. her family revealing one of the shooters fired right at her, but hit her only in the arm and the leg. her injuries not life-threatening. shannon johnson was there sitting next to his friend dedenise perza, denise survived.

shannon didn't make it out alive. 1 of 14 killed. denise saying, i will always remember his left arm wrapped around me holding me as close as possible next to him behind that chair and amidst t chaos i'll always remember him saying these three words, i got you. those who knew farook said they noticed chananges a ye ago. >> i think after he got married he kind of kept to himself a little bit more. >> reporter: but they say there were never any warning signs. do you feel like you didn't know your brother? >> no, at this time, i feel like he had a double fe. i feel like he was very good at concealing everything from all of us. >> reporter: a double life. at's what they say. and we now know there are still five pple recovering in the hospital this morning. their stories just now beginning to emerge. amanda gaspard, who we told you about, her f family sa, as she laid there, she somehow mustered the strength to pray for her

with her. so many of them did not make it out alive. >> thank you, cecilia. to hear r those wos. i got you. >> people looking out for each other. >> it says a lot. to terror scare in london. a man who attacked people with a knife at subway station has been charged with attempted murder. police are calling inging it an act of terrorism. abc's terry moran has the latest. >> taser him, taser him. >> reporter: it's been dreaded here and in so many cities around the world. >> he stabbed someone. >> reporter: cell phone cd captures a terrifying scene at a lonn subway station on saturday. a man armed with a knifefe, peatedly lunging at police, after allegedly stabbing two people. eyewitnesses say he was sshing and hacking at the neck of one victim and slashed the neck of another. >> drop it! >> reporter: police tasehim. and then again, another 50,000 volts. and he finally dropsps his kni and they overpower him. both victims survive. but scotland yard is calling the attack a terrorist incident.

shouted "this is for syria" before launching his frenzie attack. but see here how muslims on the scene angrily rebuke him. >> you're no muslim, bruv. you ain't no muslim. >> reporter: the suspect, 29 years old. he's been charged with attempted murder. police searched the home in london. this incident coming after those multiple highly planned and coordinated attacks in paris marks a different kind of terror. smaller scale. hardero stop. meyer was in court today to face the charges. eyewitnesses said he was tearful at that appearance and there is no evidence so far that he was involved in n any wideterror network. but the attack that happened here just like the far worse attack in san bernardino, it's the nightmare scenario, homegrown, secretive, self-starting terror. george. >> terry, thanks very much. >> that hashtag, you ain't no muslim, bro, gone viral. the justice department is

investigation looking into whether the practices of the chicago polilice deparent violate federal law. it's the latest fallout from the shooting of laquan mcdonald. e head of the police review board has also resigned. well, thousands of people forced from their homes during record floods in northern england. the army is rescuing people after a foot of rain fell in just one day. and for the first time beijing has declared a red alert because of pollulution. the smog there is so thick, schools are closed. side-by-side images show clear skies just last week compared to the city today. in southern california, a deadly plane crash at a desert airport. two people, including stunt pilot mike mangold were killed when that plane erupted in flames during takeoff. and a powerful message from bono, as u2 performed in paris. the concert was rescheduled of alas month's attacks. bono shouted "vive la france"

this morning, authorities in utah searching for michael cavallari, the 30-ar-old brother of reality tv star kristin cavallari. this is where police say they found his car the dayfter thanksgiving after a passerby spotted it about 100 feet from the road in a remote area of grd county, utah. his laptop and cell phone abandoned inside. the car was still running and the driver's side air bag was deployed. >> the temperatures on the night of the incident were mid to low 20s. very, very hostile conditions for somebody not properly equipp to be here. could be fatal. >> reporter: credit card receipts led authorities to this convenience store in monticello, about 100 miles from where his car was found. cavallar last seen on the security cameras wearing a green sweatshirtnd blue baseball cap as he pumped gas. >> there's been a ground team on the ground. they're covering a 15-square-mile area. >> reporter: cavallari's

[ gunshots ] watch here as 51-year-old david wineset who is shirtless raises his hand, holding the weapon. pointing it at police, who take aim and fire their weapons. as another camera angle captures the filament from an officer's stun gun flying toward the suspect. >> he was challenged by the officers in the street. at some point during that confrontation, he did raise his hand with a straight-edge razor in it. and he was shot. >> reporter: investigators say saturday's bizarre spree began when wineset, who has a long criminal history,

president jimmy carter. his cancer, undetected by brain scans. >> so, a lot of people prayed for me, and i appreciate that. >> reporter: just four months o, the outlook somber for 912-year-old when announcing he had stage four skin cancer that spread to his liver and brain. >> they did an mri and found there were four spots of melanoma on my brain. >> reporter: while doctors removed about 1010% of hisiver, carter received radiation to treat the lesions on his brain and keytruda, a drug that targets cancer cells. the 39th president has remained active during treatment. attending church and voluntring last month with his wife, rosalynn, for habitat for humanity. while it's far too soon to say if carter is cured he remains optimistic about his diagnosis

receive regular three-week immunotherapy treatments." >> and dr. besser is here. we're very happy for jimmy carter. what is his prognonosis now? >> this is just terrif news. but it is too early to say anything about prognosis. most doctors would want to wait three to five years because you can have somewhere in the body. so he's going to remain on the drug as long as he can tolerate it. >> people tuning in, especially nose who are facing cancer and their families, they're saying okay, especially when it comes to invasive melanoma, what does this mean possibly? >> well, i mean it can give some hope but it's important to put memeeality in that. in t trial that was done to approve that drug, on 1 in 14 patients responded to the drug at all. those who responded didn't respond as dramatically as he did. there's hope there's some aren't seeing the dramatic turnaround that >> wt about this drug for other cancers? >> this drug was approved as well for lung cancer but it gives us the sense of -- we

cure for cancer and now we're talking about specific cures for r a specif type of tumor. this is an example of a drug that turned on his immune system to fight the cancer. what makes the cell become cancerous. and designing a designgner drug there. the drugs are all very expensive but it gives us hope that the more we understand about how our bodies fight disease and what makes those cells turn bad, it gives us hope for additional cures and longer life for a lot of people. >> amy and i have often said, >> that's right. everybody. and the treatments should be more tailored to what you're facing. patients have experienced just what you're saying. its not one size fits all.. biologists are trying to understand, what does that mean individual people? here's one example. it seems to be quite effective. >> we're glad. we're very glad. very happy for him. >> very exciting.

i was watching it last night, and i, you know, pretty familiar with the story of "moby dick" and all that. you brought this to ron howard. you're working with him again. you brought him the screreenplay. you said this was the kind of role that you have alwayays wanted to play. that you could be the actor you wanted to be. what did you mean by that? >> i love the script. in many ways. it's the true events that inspired herman melville to write "moby dick." i love the detail this shows. the character is full of life and adventure. it's a drama in amongst the action sequences. >> what do you thi the public has such a fascination with this story line? why do you think that is? >> it's a timeless thing. i think we love to be swept up in epic adventures. ones that are full of heart and soul and what these men endured for 90 days in the ocean and

the horrific circumstances. the strength of the human spirit. what allows you to continue to fight, not give up. a number of themes i think is something anyone can relate to. >> and it's a wonderful cast that you're working with. and really, very difficult conditions. i saw that you posted this photograph of yourself. now, we know in "thor," you had to gain 30 pounds of muscle. this one you had to lose more than 30 pounds. look at this. in four weeks. is it more -- i know, angela is ing, wow. >> that was this morning before i showered. >> it's amazing what a god shower will do for you. >> that's right. >> is it more challenging to gain or to lose? >> definitely the losing. the gaining is fine. you just e a lot and lift weights. that was underfed. it l to a pretty moody existence. in order to do the story justice, we had to suffer in some way. there wasn't a lot of acting required. >> you had a celery stick.
