december actually meant good fortune for a local skating park. brenton skating plaza in downtown des moines has had more days open this year than last year. they have only had to close once so far, compared to 12 times last year for bad weather. plaza workers say the milder weather is only really an issue if it's really sunny. guests say they don't mind either. tracy barnes, tingley, iowa, resident: "it's nice, it's cold outside, but as you skate it's warm. it's good weather, it's not snowing or raining. a monster storm system stretching from new mexico to michigan and georgia continues to march eastward this morning. since wednesday at least 43 people have been killed in 7 states

elias: the most recent in san bernardino, california, where a couple opened fire at a health center killing 14-people. authorities believe the islamic couple had become radicalized, leading to growing concerns over the influx of refugees and immigrants into the u-s. in june, a man opened fire inside of a south carolina church killing nine. the incident re- opened the debate over the confederate flag, which has been taken down in the state. elias: the use of deadly force by police sparks protests... elias: deaths of unarmed black men, such as freddie gray, jamar clark, and walter scott sparked protests by black lives matter. the city of chicago released dashcam showing the death of laquan macdonald...who was shot more than a dozen times by a white police officer. the city's police force is now being investigated by the justice departmet. elias: next up, a big moment for same sex couples in the u-s. elias: the end of june was marked by celebrations, as the supreme court ruled that states could no longer ban same-sex marriage in the
