exhibitions will be lifted. officials instituted the ban to prevent the disease from spreading, halting live poultry shows at fairs and auctions. some resorted to using photographs to still show birds. elias: the third thing you need to know before you walk out the door... elias: family and friends are mourning the loss of a college student from des moines. this after the charter bus she was riding in monday crashed just fifteen minutes away from its chicago destination. now they plan to keep nicole underwoods memory alive by setting up a scholarship at the university of iowa in her honor. elias: number four... elias: another drops out of the republican presidential nomination race. george pataki has decided to end his presidential campaign. the former new york governor failed to gain traction in the polls, averaging one percent, which also kept him off the primetime debate stage. that leaves a primetime debate stage. that leaves a dozen major candidates still vying for the party's nomination.

and finally in the top five... elias: a major upset on the hardwoods last night. the iowa hawkeyes men's basketball team defeated number one ranked michigan state in iowa city. this is the first time since 1999 that the hawks knocked off a #1 ranked opponent. at no point did the hawkeyes trail behind michigan state in their big ten opener, taking the win 83 to 70. elias: we are getting more details about an illegal cow butchering in guthries county... the sheriff says he believes several people were involved in the killing and butchering of a cow just north of menlo. the remains of the animal were found on christmas day...and the images are graphic... we've blurred out a lot of this. authorities found two sets of tire tracks -- one from a car, the other from a pick up truck. they say the attempted robbery they were

morning... hawkeye fans packed the eastern iowa airport tuesday with their luggage in hand as they head to sunny california.. those heading to watch the rose bowl, added around three thousand more passengers to the normal traffic goinf through the airport... dave franzman shows us that the airport was ready for the big departure. elias: as we wind down 20-15, we want to take a look back at the top five big stories from the past twelve months... today, we look at the top metro stories that made headlines during the year. elias: we start with the battle over speed cameras on i-235... elias: in march the iowa department of transportation ordered des moines and three other iowa cities to take down speed cameras placed on interstates... in the metro, that's those on i-235. the d-o-t said the cameras were no longer needed, but the city refused saying it was a matter of safety. their refusal has now sent the issue to the courtroom. along with the fight against the d-o-t, des moines has also been sued by two individuals over the speed cameras. d-o-t, des moines has also been sued by two individuals over the speed cameras. so far the speed cameras remain in operation. elias: next, the case of a man who went on a shooting spree in pleasant hill last year. elias: in october the

polson came to a verdict, finding him guilty and later sentencing him to 55 years in jail. polson was convicted on several charges, including attempted murder, stemming from a 20-14 shooting spree in pleasant hill. during his testimony, polson claimed he didn't remember what happened due to being heavily intoxicated. however, the victims also had their chance to speak, holding nothing back as they addressed polson. an appeal is expected in the case. elias: 20-15 began with a major announcemed from the a-i-b college of business... elias: after almost a hundred years of educating students, the college said the 20-15, 20-16 academic year would be its last. this fall, they did not accept any new freshman, with enrollment at 348 students. the campus will now become an extension of the university of iowa. a-i-b will officially close on june 30 of 20- 16. elias: water quality became a major issue in the metro, after a lawsuit over nitrates.

in january, des moines water works filed a lawsuit against sac, calhoun, and buena vista counties over nitrates in the raccoon river. the lawsuit came after water works had to run its nitrate filtration system more than usual. water works says farm run off is to blame....but farmers feels its an attack on them and the small drainage farmers feels its an attack on them and the small drainage districts. this month, a motion was filed to drop eight of the ten charges in the lawsuit, saying the drainage districts dont have authority over private land owners. elias: we wrap up our top five metro stories with justice for jayda.... elias: in october 2014, five year-old jayda canada died after eating morphine in her mother's apartment... the case lead to the mother's arrest, and a search for her boyfriend. local five followed this story, as authorities sought justice for the little girl. her mother, tionne bloodsaw, was taken into custody, and pleaded guilty to one county of child endangerment causing serious injury, two counts of neglect and one drug related charge.
